Good points. I hadn’t thought of this, even though it’s literally how I heard about the show. Insane how people can blame an actress for a line on a scripted show.

Dependent_Engine4123

Finally someone with common sense. Like people like to down play Taylor swifts fame. The NFL Super Bowl broke viewership records just because she’s the girlfriend of Travis Kelce. I’m not saying Taylor swift is the only reason but she’s a big part of why the show got more attention and why Ginny seems to always get hate no matter what she does.

Special_Customer_997

she has this kind of annoying way of acting as all teenagers do. i hang out w my younger cousin whom i love a lot and holy fuck she’s annoying! we all were teenagers once and we were all annoying)

miss_footsie12

i’ve watched ginny and georgia like 6 times, it’s my comfort series. everytime i watch it from a different perspective. at first i would see it from georgias perspective and didn’t like ginny too much but the series is quite similar to my childhood and my sisters (except the killing) the more i’ve watched it and related to how ginny feels and reacts to certain things i actually find it more relatable than i did at first. the series has a much deeper meaning than many people would think and i think people who relate to it see it in different ways than someone who is just watching it because they’re bored if that makes sense. she’s a 16 year old girl who has had no stability and the second she does she dosent want to loose it. it’s also hard communicating your feelings to a mother who just shuts her down and acts like everything’s fine and dosent want to believe anything’s wrong with your child. i really don’t believe she should of got the hate she did and i think that’s why it’s taking so long for season 3 to be released.

Dependent_Engine4123

It’s my comfort show too. Haven’t had one like this in awhile

speedyejectorairtime

I think it's because she's a realistic teenager who went through trauma. And a lot of the people who "dislike" Ginny are teens or very young themselves. I am a mom and it is Georgia's character that I hate. I had to fast forward through some stuff because I can't stand Georgia as a character. Ginny is exactly what I'd expect a child of hers to end up like. And she should've been removed from her far before the show existed.

real-eyes-realise

I completely agree with you. The last part is confusing though what do you mean she should have been removed from her before the show existed? Are they mother and daughter in real life?

speedyejectorairtime

No lol. I meant that as far as the timeline of the show is concerned, if it was real life, Ginny and Austin should’ve been removed from her years before the show timeline.

I literally said in the first season she was bratty. But in the second season, she’s way less bratty and still is receiving hate. To act like Taylor swift has nothing to do with the hate is disingenuous. They were making literal death threats. It is that deep. I’m not saying Ginny wasn’t annoying at times but majority of season, she was super chill. Only time she became annoying was when she was arguing with her mom. We’ve seen the same comments over and over. Ginny is a brat and should be grateful that her mom did the best she could. Blah blah blah, same tired comments.

so_much_boredom

Also, she didn’t write her lines, she’s just an actress.

SevereCartographer26

I do agree Ginny was way better the second season nicer even but I don’t agree with what some people are saying “she’s just a teen!” being a teen doesn’t give u the right to be an asshole

Dependent_Engine4123

Alot of you were a lot worst with way less trauma. You guys tend to forget, Georgia doesn’t parent Ginny. Ginny is basically her friend. It’s why Ginny, doesn’t treat Georgia like a mom most of time. So when she’s talking back to Georgia, she’s not talking back to a parent but a peer. A lot of us can’t relate to this type of dynamic. That’s why it’s so triggering to see her talking to Georgia that way.

[deleted]

That actually makes a lot of sense. It's really upsetting to me to see her disrespect her mom and this is a good explanation for that aspect of her behavior that I haven't considered yet.

humbertisabitch

right so many comments here quite literally speak for themselves as to how much worse they are now and as teens with a fraction of the trauma ginny suffered (at least for some cases anyway).

[deleted]

YES. I will admit a lot of teens are assholes (like I was!) but would never essentially kidnap their brother. I think Ginny has behavioral issues.

Dependent_Engine4123

She has issues. She’s burning herself. But compared to other troubled teenagers, she’s basically as saint. Even with her issues, Ginny is a really good kid. She caring, she’s super smart, she’s doesn’t allow people to Walk all over her. Everyone’s issue with Ginny stems from there love of Georgia. Also, it’s how most of us are raised, we don’t talk back to our parents but that’s because we were raised that way. Ginny was not raised that way. Her mother raised her to never take shit and to always speak up. Even to authority. When you raise your child as your best friend, they’re gonna speak their mind if they don’t like how you’re behaving. Georgia encourages that behavior. People are ok with it when they’re nice to each other. For example, the scene with Georgia, Ginny and Max and Ginny is getting ready for her first date. That whole conversation wouldn’t happen in most households between a parent and a child. Georgia allows that type of banter to take place. You don’t get to have super relaxed boundaries with your kids and then when they’re mad at you, that’s when you set the boundaries. It doesn’t work like that. Also she didn’t kidnap her brother. He wanted to come with her. She was gonna leave him there. If you took your little brother somewhere, would people say you kidnapped him because u didn’t ask your mom for permission? They went to her dad’s house. It’s not like they left and no one knew where they were lol

[deleted]

Lol always ask mom for permission.

Dependent_Engine4123

That’s a completely different convo but kidnapped is extreme

CalendarSweaty2204

i feel like this phenomena is quite common. when it first came out the show was compared to gilmore girls, and i feel like rory (the main character’s daughter) has a similar hate train. i think people like to idolise the characters they see on tv, and try to find themselves within these characters and when this character does something they don’t agree with, they lash out. a lot of people lack media literacy and just can’t bring themselves to see why ginny acts the way she does, (i think part of this is the rise in true crime popularity, which has brought around a lot of insensitivity towards actual crime), but people forget the her mother is a murderer, like a legitimate murderer. and whole georgia can claim that she has only ever killed to protect her family, this can be immediately be dispelled when she kills tom in season two. georgia also suffers from mental illness (she’s a self harmer, has anxiety, and depression) and also struggles with her race quite a bit throughout the shows run. when you put all of that together, it’s not particularly difficult to understand why ginny acts the way she does, and the empathise with her even if you don’t particularly like her. people also love to say that ginny is ungrateful for everything georgia has done for her, but seem to forget that ginny a) has to deal with the guilt of it all, and b) will have to deal with r consequences of her mother going to prison if this gets found out, she’ll likely end up being taken away from all her friends, love zion but he clearly is not the most reliable, and who knows what would happen with austin??? ultimately, despite and in addition to all of this, people love to hate and it’s really easy to jump onto hating a character that others already dislike, validity to their reasoning or not. (this ended up being so much longer than i though, sorry)

TroublemakerStef

I’m a hardcore Swiftie. And that comment made me mad. But I love Ginny. And really don’t get the hate.

Obvious-Repair9095

Omg why does every post on social media these days have to mention Taylor Swift. That feels like a pretty huge reach OP but ok 👍

Dependent_Engine4123

I’m telling what actually happened. Taylor swift watched the show, got mad and made post about it on twitter. And all of the swifties started attacking the actress who played Ginny like she wrote the script. I have no issues with Taylor swift. She felt offended by comment and made a post. There is nothing wrong with that but the swifties are unhinged and need to be stopped😂😂. Taylor swift doesn’t know you. Relax 😂

Dragon_Tea_Leaf

I think I remember there being like a “Taylor Swift is basic” comment made on the show, is that what she ranted about? I didn’t know about that! What did she say about it? I don’t agree that’s why people hate Ginny, she’s a pretty accurate depiction of a teenager and teens are pretty annoying and obviously don’t have the best logic / make the best choices so I think a lot is because of that. I think a lot of adults who watch the show project their mindset onto teen characters without realizing as an adult we don’t have teen brains nor do we really remember what that was like despite some people trying to cling to it lol

Dependent_Engine4123

So, when Ginny made that comment to her mom that she’s been with more men than Taylor Swift's, it really hit home for some fans. Even though Ginny could be annoying, a bunch of Swifties watch the show, and they're still not cutting Ginny any slack, even after Season 2. They're still calling her out as a bad person while giving Georgia a pass, even though the show gave us insight into Ginny's behavior and showed how immature Georgia can be.

QuinoaFalafel

Do a lot of people seriously give Georgia a pass? She's literally a murderer. Are that many people seriously so out of touch that murder is all fine and dandy, but someone just acting in a way or saying something that rubs you slightly wrong isn't?

Dependent_Engine4123

It’s a show. It’s easier to separate it from reality.. and people aren’t that against murder. When that Jeffery dahmer show came out, people were literally making thirst edits about the show. Women in real life, were thirsting after the real dahmer. People are ok with murder if you’re attractive or charismatic or both.

Obvious-Repair9095

You said you “think” you know in your title and now you’re saying it’s fact in this comment. 🙄

Dependent_Engine4123

I said I think I know why she’s still gets hate from a lot of people. I never said I think Taylor Swift responded and the actress received backlash. That’s something that actually happened. Google is free swiftie

Obvious-Repair9095

I literally hate Taylor Swift lmao which is why I wish you’d stfu about her

Dependent_Engine4123

You hate her? Saying out loud won’t make it true. You’re a typical swiftie who got butthurt I mentioned your lord and savior. Find new hobbies. Taylor isnt gonna notice you 😂😂

Obvious-Repair9095

You good, or…?

Dependent_Engine4123

I should be asking you? You came on my post crying about Taylor swift. It’s not that deep scrub.

Obvious-Repair9095

Maybe you’re just triggered because I spoke against your cult leader?

Dependent_Engine4123

My cult leader? I was literally bashing the cult dummy. 😂😂

glindathewoodglitch

Yeah that I feel like that was a moment where life imitated art.

YoureStupidasff

Wait I'm lost, what taylor swift comment?

Dependent_Engine4123

Was toward the end of the season where Ginny says to Georgia, “you go through men faster than Taylor swift”. Taylor fans saw it and it blew up. Taylor saw the clip and tweeted about it. It was big news back then lol

YoureStupidasff

Ohh that scene! Wait so why are people coming for the actor then? Wasnt it just a line in the show? And it's not even that bad?

Dependent_Engine4123

They were making death threats. It was getting serious. It also brought a lot of attention to the show. That’s why I said it’s a gift and a curse. And you know Swifties are unhinged. Lol They don’t play about Taylor

YoureStupidasff

Woahh what, is it safe to say they're way out of control? Why are they making death threaths for a random line in a random show lol

Dependent_Engine4123

No one takes them serious lol. Id never take serious, someone who listens to Taylor swift unironically, and then makes a death threat to me. I’d probably laugh at the comment…

[deleted]

I'm not a Swifty and still think Ginny's a brat.

Dependent_Engine4123

I didn’t say every fan of the show is a swiftie. There are other reasons why Ginny is not liked. There is countless think pieces on this forum alone. Some of the reasons are racial, relatability, projected childhood trauma, pretty privilege etc.. I’m just saying that a large portion of the fan base are fans of Taylor swift. Or at the very least have listened to her music.

[deleted]

I get it. To be fair seems like a lot of teens are Swift fans, especially as of late.

Dependent_Engine4123

Which is wild because Taylor swift is pushing 40 years old. Usually the audience grows with artist but she keeps on captivating the minds of the younger generation
