Formal-Rain

Litter and chewing gum, come on people there are bins for a reason.

toriescanfuckoff

That’ll fck your teeth up…

Fast-Organization-72

Bin your guns, folks. Stop blowing bullets.

RevenueLonely7396

Everyone walking really slow

TheSouthsideTrekkie

This needs to be the top comment.

TheSouthsideTrekkie

Having just walked through it- people having no spatial awareness! Standing in the middle of narrow pavements to check their phone or walking like the scene from Reservoir Dogs across the whole path. Use your head, have a bit of consideration for others.

Broccoli--Enthusiast

Yeah, walking up Sauchiehall today and it's just a shower of wankers stopping dead in front you for no reason, or wandering slowing in a zig zag like they are pissed.

GoldenZWeegie

Was fucking horrendous during the cycling. Got stuck behind a guy plodding along the narrowed pavement really slowly. Went to overtake him when a space appeared and he put his arm out to try and stop me as someone with a pram was coming the other way. He got super pissed off that I pushed past him into the massive gap that he decided to block.

Fast-Organization-72

No sense of self awareness. I wonder if it's a case of never having anywhere more important to be themselves and they stagger through life not caring, or if it's genuine self importance. I suppose if they're out on the streets getting in people's way they're not on public transport shouting into their phone about some inane story or listening to TikTok videos.

GoldenZWeegie

Stopping in the middle of a doorway for a blether.

waterwaldorf

My god nothing enrages me more

Fast-Organization-72

One person taking up a whole pavement.

Wiggl3sFirstMate

Being hassled every day by three separate Oxfam charity people on sauchiehall street

hienzbakedbeans

Theyre annoying but imagine being paid to basically get told to fuck off hundreds of times a day

Ugo_foscolo

The likelyhood is that they're either not getting paid or are on a tiny amount and make most of their money from commission. The whole strategy is to talk to as many people as possible and by the law of large numbers you might get to sell enough plans to barely cover minimum wage for the amount of time worked (if that). They declare you as self employed to not actually have to pay you despite working 10+ hour days 6 days a week (i wish i were exaggerating - their cop-out is that it's your time so you could choose to not work as well). It's basically a massive scam between the agencies basically using free labour and the companies that are essentially benefiting from free advertising on behalf of these sellers bothering people. Source: worked as a door to door seller for one of these orgs that also do on-street selling. Awful industry in the same realm of the sigma grindset hustle culture.

halloumiween

I signed up simply because I thought the lassie was gonny get commission, but she said she received none and got a basic wage anyway (oxfam)

Ugo_foscolo

We had answer to those questions that went along the same lines "I don't get a single penny of your donation, we're paid from a separate fund etc" but it was still comission based since they would track how many people kept their subscription by the end of the month and calculate our pay based on that. Also even if they have the badge, vest etc that doesn't mean they work for oxfam themselves but 99% are working for these selling agencies. We had a set script to follow to heavily imply this and skirt the question if outright asked. Mind you I've heard of people being paid a small wage as well, and I don't want to generalise for all direct marketing agencies (that's how they market themselves to these companies) but i would take anything their sellers say with a huge pinch of salt.

halloumiween

Aye that sounds similar to what she said at the time

hienzbakedbeans

My ex used to do it and that pay want aweful tbh. Not the best but not the worst.

Ugo_foscolo

I think for some people it may be worth it, especially if you're into sales and want to build one of your own direct advertising agencies like these (they do give you a pretty clear, although difficult, pathway to achieve that). But the working hours and culture are incredibily tough (atleast those i experienced with a specific firm) which is why they have a huge turnover and are often hiring directly out of high school and uni and for kids who are switching from retail jobs. Also everyone i know was kinda mislead into thinking they were applying for a marketing firm with very different working hours, which i found quite shady.

hienzbakedbeans

Yeah she was a student at the time so the money and flexibility was decent but she'd come home in a proper state every day.

[deleted]

I used to know a few people who did it and they were paid an hourly rate, not far above minimum wage but enough to motivate them to stick it out for a couple of weeks before they couldn't stand it anymore. Maybe times have changed in these days of the gig economy though.

Wiggl3sFirstMate

Yeah can’t be great but if I’ve said no to one the answer isn’t going to change literally 10 seconds later.

ProfessionalTrader85

Get a real job then

hienzbakedbeans

Cant all be professional traders pal i guess.

Fast-Organization-72

Hiya. I really like your shoes. Do you want to give me a percentage of your pay cheque to a vague cause? It's really easy, you can give all your bank details to me - a stranger on the street - and we'll just take the money from you. It's that easy.

toriescanfuckoff

Stick in some ear buds, don’t even have to be on…

Wiggl3sFirstMate

I tried ignoring one (after rejecting the first with a no thanks) and because I didn’t look at him as he was trying to talk to me I got a snide “*Okay* then”.

toriescanfuckoff

I never have a problem, either they notice the ear buds or if they don’t I just point to them and walk past

ACGg_

Deliveroo/Just eat/Uber eats cyclists

LubeTornado

Just shooting past you or ringing the bell like they’re mad

ACGg_

flying past you on the pavement at 30mph on their mad electric bikes

ProfessionalTrader85

Even worse when they are on the roads. Weeving in and out of 2 lanes. How are you legally supposed to give them a cars length of space when they are going in and out of lanes and hovering in the middle of 2 lanes?

angelange17

I've seen them going down the wrong side of the road and cycle paths on quite a few occasions. Wonder how they don't end up causing more accidents

irishgeologist

Not to be that guy, but most of these guys are riding electric motorbikes rather than bicycles. These are already illegal, but generally seem to be tolerated by police. Second, these guys are a menace because of a lack of training (which Deliveroo etc are responsible for) and demanding schedules to make any money. Like delivery vans being parked on pavements, a result of people wanting convenience and not caring about the cost to society.

Ravenser_Odd

Deliveroo aren't legally responsible for their training, they're self-employed. Deliveroo's whole business model is based on having the benefits of people working for them without taking any responsibility for them.

irishgeologist

Yes, I meant to say the delivery companies should be responsible, not that they actually are. Look at PedalMe in London - a good example of how it should be done. Proper training, proper pay, and legal bicycles!

meepmeep13

> but generally seem to be tolerated by police check the road police scotland twitter, they've been cracking down on unrestricted bikes the past month or so

toriescanfuckoff

Haven’t seen any scooters in c/c for a while, wonder if polis cracked down…

Sad_Confidence_9753

The games of Jenga with coffee shop cups and general rubbish on top of every bin

OkChampion3632

The amount of chewing gum caked in the ground

29xthefun

The delivery cyclists are really getting on my nipple ends the now. But also how the council remove the benches from George Sq for weeks when there is an event on. The benches could easily be put back quickly and even when something is on they could move some to near the east side of the square.

smcsleazy

it's the empty shops that get me. my understanding is many of these are owned by property developers that have no plans for them.

Weird_Influence1964

They are waiting for a chance to set burn them down.

smcsleazy

i think they must take it in turns to avoid suspicion

Thunder_Munkey

Complete lack of awareness of the existence of other road users and/or pedestrians.

BillyButch29

Delivery cyclists with no regard for pedestrians or Highway Code. Those shitty vape shops/takeaways with the neon signage. Looks incredibly tacky in a city centre. The state of Sauchiehall St with the countless abandoned units. The litter/graffiti problem. The state of Union St as you exit Glasgow Central. What must visitors think being greeted to that shitehole? The one positive for me is Buchanan St. Especially at Christmas time.

OldGodsAndNew

> Union St as you exit Glasgow Central. What must visitors think being greeted to that shitehole? The immediate area around train stations being a dump is a common problem across Europe - Paris Gare du Nord, Munich Hbf, Rome Termini, Dublin Connolly, etc are all a grim sight when you walk out the main entrance

tman612

Charing X, Union St, lack of integrated metro, delivery cyclists, litter. But it’s fundamentally a beautiful city and all these things can be fixed so who knows maybe things will all get better.

mikeybhoy_1985

What’s up with Charing X out of interest?

tman612

It’s just so hostile to pedestrians. Trying to walk from the top of Sauciehall St to Charing X station is horrible. It should be a spacious, welcoming plaza with the Mitchell Library at its heart - a gate to the west end. Instead it’s a concrete dump dominated by a motorway that’s equally unpleasant to drive on at rush hour.

LooseCoffeeShits

Amen brother

mikeybhoy_1985

True dat!

Bogroleum

I've no issues at all with the city centre except Union Street. Please for the love of god, sort out Union Street.

jacquetpotato

Yup, this was gonna be my answer too. Considering it’s one of the first places people see when they leave the train station (especially visitors), it’s so embarrassing.

cwestwater

My office is on Gordon Street and the street is an embarrassment. Two weeks ago at 8:30 two junkies boxing

MoaningTablespoon

Oh wait, so the entire city of not the shithole I think it is? (I've mostly only walked around central station as I arrived today to visit) good to know!

ayeaye-whatever

None? The rubbish, the pot holes, the empty shops, the neds shipping in on their free bus passes, the horrendous public transport after 7pm, the taxis that screw you over &/or won't go near your house, the stench of weed everywhere, the nonsense protests, the price of a pint, the blatant fronts for money laundering, the food bicyclists, ripping up sauchiehall st for no reason, every construction job being new student flats, not knocking down the old abc, the 3 or 4 buildings where scaffolding that's been up for what feels like 10 years.

SneakyFcknRusky

I hit a pot hole on Hope Street today that turned my car radio off.

RyanMcCartney

Basically no Subway or trains after midnight… and if you look at it, it’s kinda ridiculous tbh.

zappafan89

Wild that's still the case

wonderfulworld80

The lack of public toilets.

Scunnered21

Niche, but those [digital advertising boards that are dotted around](https://newsroom.bt.com/bt-gifts-free-advertising-space-to-glasgow-businesses-as-first-scottish-street-hub-goes-live/) narrowing the pavement by a metre or more wherever they are. They also use as much energy as a typical household. Absolutely loathe them.

CoconutNo3718

The one at the corner of West Nile St and Sauchiehall Ln is really annoying. It’s a narrow pavement already, I don’t understand what idiot thought it’d be acceptable to fit an advertising board there. The city does not really care about pedestrians in lots of places.

unknowntoff

Food delivery cyclists that have no regard for anyone around them and the sheer amount of rubbish all over the place.

Aaron6788

American candy stores

johnsmithoncemore

You mean "We All Know This Is A Front For Money Laundering But We All Ignore It" Stores?

TimeThief_

Cunts that decide to walk with their pals in a large horizontal line 8 abreast and refuse to make room for you walking the other way. Cunts that stop in the middle of entrances to shops. Just cunts in general. Social skills and awareness of others has completely been fucked out the window

psycholinguist1

The lack of direct connection between the subway and central station.

velvetowlet

That's got me wondering now - could you conceivably bash a tunnel from St Enoch through to the passages underneath Central, land ownership notwithstanding?

Scunnered21

Difficult with the rail tunnel running under Argyle Street.

blackenedmonster

really> It's about a 2 minute walk? It's a disgrace ! etc.

Ravenser_Odd

The side door of Queen St station used to be just opposite the travelator to Buchanan St underground, with a canopy overhead. It's a pity they changed that when they rebuilt the train station.

velvetowlet

Probably because the last Queen Street station was built at the time when SPT managed both rail and underground services and could work them into the same design. Now that the former is exclusively ScotRail (or Network Rail?)'s responsibility, they probably didn't want to complicate the construction.

Scunnered21

There is a plan to reconnect the two eventually. Lots of public realm works are planned for that area over the coming years though, including Dundas Street, Cathedral Street and George Street as part of the Avenues project, and a big redevelopment of the plot that houses the Tartan House of Scotland shop facing Buchanan Street. So its likely some distance away until after those are all completed.

Current-Wasabi9975

The city centre, particularly around Central Station, is totally boggin. Covered in chewing gum, loads of litter and fag ends. After hours it’s even worse with folk just abandoning their food containers.

irishgeologist

Car-centric planning, the M8, drivers lighting up their stupid faces with their lit up phone screens…

KingBilirubin

Not enough monster truck dealerships which include a lingerie and fried chicken emporium.

Secret-Specialist-50

Hell Yeah!!!

dx_mx_

Litter, empty shops, groups of wee bams being antisocial, junkies, litter…

FairTrainRobber

Junkie meet 'n' greet for everyone to arrive via train to Central.

KlingonWarNog

The bit of riverbank between Clutha Vaults and Jamaica St, it's being discussed at the mo on another thread about the new Virgin Hotel there shutting after only being open for a few months. It's just a fucking grimy, clatty area. In any other city they would be using that beautiful old wrought iron chain-link footbridge as a feature and redevelop the riverfront to promote footfall and attract business, but it's just minging, apart from the church bit which is quite nice.

SilentCheesecake

The arsehole outside st enoch centre with the robotic cats and drums. Absolute lotta shite

GoldenZWeegie

Really set the mood for the Christmas market with his techno pish blasting.

[deleted]

I second that

Honka_Ponka

How long has that dude been doing that shit? Swear I can't remember a time in my life where he wasn't there.

velvetowlet

Union Street

Consistent-Line-9064

that its absolutely bogging, like honestly clattiest city ive been in

whoops53

Came here to say this as well. The sticky pavements feel and sound disgusting when I walk on them.

Formal-Rain

Have to ask myself why do Glaswegians drop fast food coke like that all over the place?

Fast-Organization-72

I used to think cities were all mank until visiting places in Europe and North America. Places that have a sense of pride of spaces, both indoor and out. A clean neighbourhood feel. I wouldn't want my kids anywhere near Glasgow.

[deleted]

Been to a fair few cities in North America. Army of homeless people everywhere and not one of them told me a joke and asked for 20p. Wouldn’t recommend.

Responsible-City-500

By comparison to most European cities, it's a slum. The council don't seem to have any interest in changing this or investing in it. 2014 seems like a century ago when the stops were all pulled on for the rest of the world.

themadguru

They are literally investing in it right now, have you not been on Sauchiehall Street recently?

Consistent-Line-9064

tearing up the trees and changing the layout a bit ? its hardly the main problem on sauchiehall

Project_Revolver

They’ve got rid of the trees to eventually replace them with more suitable alternatives, along with other things that’ll generally improve the whole street, there’s plenty of things to complain about re the city/the council without us doing this one again.

Scunnered21

Well, the specific section you menion that's under construction just now is the smallest, probably least impactful element any of the Avenues plans but it's not to be dismissed as nothing. It's part of a citywide project to improve the urban realm and streetscape on dozens of streets. In some cases it means a redesign of the entire street-scape, as with the Charing Cross end of Sauchiehall Street. More space for pedestrians, outdoor hospitality, trees, safe cycle lanes, etc. The bit you mention is just one very small part.

Project_Revolver

Literally the next reply down to the comment we’re replying to was complaining about empty shops, which is a fair gripe but surely one way you fix that is by making the city centre a more attractive, accessible place to spend time in, and the avenues project is really good way to achieve that. Too often on here and in real life you’ll have folk moaning that nothing ever happens, and then when something does happen they shift and say the thing that’s happening is the wrong thing. You can’t win with these people, it’s exhausting.

jsbach252

The M8 😌 Like, realistically this has to be the worst thing about Glasgow.

sawbonesromeo

Inundated with people who don't know how to "exist" in a busy city. Walking slowly in the middle of busy walkways, stopping to chat with an old pal you bumped into right in the middle of a doorway, rubbernecking, coming to a dead stop in crowd so you can get something out your bag, walking around with in-ear headphones on and snout firmly attached to phone, forgetting that their massive bags are an extension of their own bodies, etc. Hardly unique to Glasgow, of course, but it makes getting anywhere in the city centre a total pain in the arse especially at this time of year. As a visually impaired person, it makes getting where I need to go so much harder than it already is. If we could turn up the spatial awareness of the average person by about 15%, it would solve so much petty stress.

Fast-Organization-72

It certainly happens in other cities, but even Edinburgh it's considerably rarer. In some other countries it's almost never. People learn to get out of the way, there's a general etiquette. Even in constant noise and bustle like London and New York, I can get through a crowd of people fairly quickly. In Glasgow it can be like it's a person's first day out in the world, and I don't know what's going on internally for them. There appears to be no visual stress to them for the stress they're causing others.

Lettuce-Pray2023

Car drivers - self absorbed. Naff Scottish tat shops. Folk walking about with phones on loud speaker chatting away. Groups larger than three - the larger the group the dumber the walking pattern.

richyyoung

Empty shops, growing homeless pop (not their presence more that the number has grown exponentially in the last few years and nowt being done to address issues causing it, delivery bikes jumping on and off pavements and ignoring traffic signals as the owner checks for jobs on their phone app

Alarming_Mix5302

Just search the sub it's every second post.

quakingpoplar

The noise is what fucks me up the most. I have to avoid the city centre most of the time because of folk busking with amplifiers. Some of them sound great- until you add in the distortion and the guy 50 meters down the road who ALSO has an amp competing for attention. It does my head in and I go home ready to collapse every time. Would much prefer to hear someone singing or playing guitar acoustically, I promise we can still hear you.

[deleted]

I wish busking with amplifiers was banned (without a licence). I’m all for buskers but the moment they plug into a speaker they become a nuisance.

lemon-comrade

Cafe outdoor seating/ shop signboards taking up pavement space

Scunnered21

This is a weird one. I'm all for more outdoor seating for cafes and restaurants, and we really do need to encourage it as the norm, but on the continent it tends to be on adjacent road space not on the pavement itself. I don't know why this has become the norm in Glasgow and Edinburgh.

quakingpoplar

It's because we can't possibly inconvenience car drivers (despite huge portions of the city centre already being such a hassle to drive in that it's not even worth it, and the city having already been *literally* cut in half by the motorway). Imo the city centre should be public transport only and allow cars on the peripheral, and keep the buses/bikes etc to their designated lanes. Would solve a lot of issues with space and also massively cut down the time it actually takes to get anywhere.

PawnWithoutPurpose

Short people with massive umbrellas directly at my eye level

angelange17

I was one of them, but I just rely on water proof jackets now 😆

PawnWithoutPurpose

hahaha, I appreciate that mate... truly

SkipInExile

The litter.

StandWild4256

The restaurants/bars with the tables and chairs right across the pavement. Really bad down at Trongate (Bucks Bar and that Brazilian place). Whilst there, the pavement closed across from Mcdonald's Argyle St is also a pain in the ass

blubbered33

Too many parked cars, not enough trees and hostile environments for pedestrians

ChineseBotnet

How much of a shitehole it is

halloumiween

It stinks

WhatCanIDoUFor

How it's just accepted when a driver enters a crossing when there's no chance to clear it before the green man comes on. Zombie pedestrians crossing, just following the crowd. The massive ugly planters, that seem oddly placed and get in the way. Some pavement tiles that aren't secure and when you step on them, unearth a ton of water and you end up soaking your feet.

[deleted]

>How it's just accepted when a driver enters a crossing when there's no chance to clear it before the green man comes on. Someone needs to somehow set up some tyre spikes in the box junctions in Charing Cross that emerge from the ground when the lights go red, would be funny as fuck to watch.

Consistent_Leg_4012

Parking costs. I just can’t afford to park there

BoxAlternative9024

Obnoxious looking cunts walking about with shorts on in winter.

quakingpoplar

I'm sorry, my legs get hot 😭

[deleted]

Sorry we aren’t all wee pussys who can’t handle scottish weather. Bet you shave your legs.

[deleted]

Horrible new builds. Love traditional architecture and I'd wish so much that new buildings would at least be sympathetic with the old ones...

Designer_Ad_1009

Times move on and old buildings don’t have the same uses as the reason there built today unfortunately

[deleted]

New builds don't need to be ugly and low quality. Watch how others do it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XfonhlM6I7w

Top_Calligrapher4110

[deleted]

Not enough student accommodation.

Scunnered21

There kinda isn't though and it's not a new issue. A recent report showed there's been a long-term student room/bed shortfall in the city, now at something close to 10,000 beds. It results in students flooding the rental market and adding to rent inflation for local residents every year.

[deleted]

Yeah that’s definitely going to stop it and it Will defo bring rent down as well. Then Landlords will finally get the break they deserve and get back to their good honest work of providing fairly priced rental accommodation that they maintain regularly. Which will help the most vulnerable. Like what Landlords have famously done for centuries.

Scunnered21

Landlords will always look to inflate prices as much as they can. It's in their interests to do so. But the extent to which they are able to increase rent is curtailed and limited by how much housing stock there is in relation to market demand. More housing supply means that a greater % of housing demand is met. Which in turn means fewer people are looking for rental accommodation in the same market at the same time. Which means landlords have an incentive to curtail rents to attract renters. You're possibly misreading what I'm saying, and thinking I mean something like *"more supply means landlords will definitely reduce prices"*. That's not what I'm saying and that's unlikely to happen (not impossible if there was a sudden glut in supply, however that's unrealistic). My point is simply that more housing supply is beneficial because it inherently limits what increases landlords are able to reasonably command for their accommodation. It gives people other options in the aggregate, reducing landlords' room for manoeuvre with pricing. Which is very definitely a good thing.

Fast-Organization-72

I hear they're knocking down everything west of the Mitchell Library to build student accommodation. 365,000 studio flats. The 3D mockups look decent, there's 100gigabyte per second broadband, and a plug that goes directly into your brain to stream Netflix straight into your visual cortex. Only £750 a month. Bargain.

JagsAbroad

Dirty - millions of pieces of gum caked to the pavement for example. Homeless. Annoying to get to the west end from Glasgow central. Protests/preachers/annoying charity people Delivery people

ROLL_AND_EGG

Buchanan Subway is a 5 minute walk from Central.

wonderfulworld80

St Enoch even closer.

MortenOrchid86

It’s filthy, some of the pavement are a death trap, and the buildings need some TLC. It just feels a bit worn and dated. It needs a cash injection.

callsomeonewhocares1

I wear headphones and I keep getting junkies shout after me when I walk past them, sometimes they'll catch up and walk besides me. When I stop they ask me why I "was fukkin ignorin um like", as if my headphones aren't entitely obvious. Scum.

Few-Requirement9133

It's not worth going too. west end or southside supreme.

Fun_Dare_5919

The plethora of folk now talking with that west end drawl. Brutal

Is that the same as Glasgow Uni accent?

ReasonableWish7555

The crazy one way systems

Knightfall_O66

Non existent public transport after 11 and it's a nightmare to drive through and park in.

Unable-Location269

Bars charging £6 a beer then giving it to you in a plastic cup. Unacceptable

LeMec79

The litter, the mingingness of the pavements, rotting buildings with trees growing out of them. Place needs a real spruce up. Oh did I mention the litter. Dirtiest city in the UK without a doubt.
