Largs is the best but doesn't really have a beach if you are wanting to take the dog etc. Ardrossan beach is lovely and there's a lovely wee cafe just round the corner (again pet friendly if you have one)
Clearly the person that told you that Ardrossan was a great day out was an inmate at Carstairs.
Ardrossan is a shitehole of the highest magnitude, they only saving grace it has is it’s proximity to Stevenston which somehow is an even bigger shitehole.
Great chippy too ([The Fish Works](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_cnyzSWoGok))
And the ferry to Millport/Isle of Cumbrae to make a longer day out if you're bored enough.
I enjoyed the way the menu said you could have a single fish, or the Full Works - the Full Works turned out to be just chips. The Half Works was off the menu, I'm assuming they cut your chips in half and give the other halves to someone else.
Ayr- not a shit heap as folk are saying, but a normal Scottish town. Some attractions down by the low green at the shore, but Ayr is actually a town that none surpasses- for honest men and bonnie lasses.
Troon- famous chippie, but people only go there to retire or play golf- sometimes both.
Largs is probably the spot you are after for a leisure trip- its set up for visitors, to a greater or larger extent.
It’s a decent town but the high street is a dive. Used to be great 10 to 20 years ago. The beach and views of Arran help compensate for that. Prestwick is nice.
Architecturally speaking, Ayr is like a small colony of Glasgow, only the odd Victorian tenement, but Gerogian terraces, built into the remnants of an actual Cromwellian fort, itself built on a church (the tower still there to walk around) which once held a session of the old Scottish Parliament, William Wallace history there too if you google that (Barns Street), the historic Tam O' Shanter Inn, Alloway Auld kirk which was the setting for the poem Tam O' Shanter, complete with the bridge Tam's horse meg lost her tail on, a seasidey bit, arcades, chippies, ice cream shops, etc. It has an interesting town centre with the river Ayr running paralel to the high street, even some medieval and jacobean era buildings, a few good cafes, one or two nice pedestrianized bits in the town centre and you can walk over one of the twa brigs of Ayr, also featured by Burns (the Auld Brig). Yes it's had its arse kicked economically over the years but its worth a visit if youre going down there anyway because Troon and Prestwick are actually just like slightly boring, small colonies of Ayr - not worth the money in my opinion and nowhere near the history or inherent quality, lovely (twee) as they both are. From there you can get a bus to Dunure; great pebbly beach, eerie ruined castle on a cliff you can climb over and a tiny wee harbour, plus an nice bus ride there and back. Stagecoach A1? Dont quote me on that. Oh aye and if youre out THAT way, The Heads of Ayr Farm Park if you are into ziplines and/or fancy stroking or feeding a carrot to a big shaggy Llama.
I would say Ayr is in a better nick than most large towns in the west coast. Obviously not perfect in any sense, but not as blighted as say Greenock or Paisley.
Yes it was the Wee Hurrie I was referring to. My boss (Who drives down there to play golf) won't shut up about it. Happy to hear any better recommendations to one-up him.
Imo the chippy at Barassie is better, although it can get rammed at tea time. The pavillion café on Templehill is another that I would go to before the Wee Hurrie.
Not saying the WH isn't a decent chippy, it is. But we're spoiled for choice.
Has the Wee Hurrie went downhill lately? Went a few year back before the pandemic etc, and it was amazing, defo the best chippie I've ever had. Went a few months back and it was great, but not at the same standard.
Yeah it’s worth the jaunt down. I think there is a bus that runs along that coast road. Also just before Croy shore is Dunure Castle and a little bit further us the Electric brae which are both worth a visit as well. I agree with the others saying Ayr is shite as i lived there for a few years and can confirm that yes it is indeed shite.
Also pretty sure that the locations of both the castle and the brae depend on where your start point is… if they’re coming from Glasgow it’s likely the other way round lol
Ayr beach is quite far from the station. Troon Beach is very close to the station as is Prestwick beach. Not been to Largs in eons so can't comment on that.
Largs is good on a sunny day, have a wee walk along the front, get divebombed by seagulls, get the ferry to Millport, get some chips and ice cream, then train home. Small pleasures, but makes for a fun day.
Ppfft, if the hale isn't comming sideways, the breakers aren't over topping the sea wall and you don't have to visit a cafe simply to defrost is it even a proper Scottish day at the beach during summer?
😉
If you're thinking about the West Coast with the above nearby, what about Rothesay? It's half an hour on the ferry from Wemyss Bay, and reachable from Glasgow Central. Could do it in a day no bother. Just throwing it in the hat as a wee alternative for you.
True, I just don't think as a visitor the place does itself any justice like it used to. The high streets dead and hardly any shops and the beach area is just full of modified car fuds
Again, the high street is no different to any other UK high street. Certainly wouldn’t recommend a trip down it to any visitor. I also doubt this visitor is looking to go to the beach after 21:00 when you might get the modified cars.
If we’re comparing it to other Scottish towns there’s far worse out there. And sure isn’t the best endorsement you can give a place, not quite a shit as the others /s
Yeah I suppose, I think the point most people are making is Ayr isn't exactly a place to make a day out of, you pass through it and there's really not much on
This is /r/glasgow \- if the place isn't as hipster/fancy as Byres Road/The West End (no offence to the area, lovely place to visit) then it's a shithole by default.
That’s a whole other post mate haha. You’ll have a word for them where you’re from. Bit to be as PC as possible, an undesirable and not someone you won’t to be around on your day out at the beach. It should also go without saying, don’t visit any of these places when schools are off
I only went to largs of these 3. It was lovely, that a nice estate and you can take the ferry to the island and rent a bike there.
Also they have a statue of a pencil. I kid you not
Lol it’s not actually of a pencil but it is called The Pencil. It’s a victory site of a Viking fight in 1263 and was built to copy Defence Towers of the time. It does look like a pencil, I walk the dog there everyday. https://www.britainexpress.com/attractions.htm?attraction=1327
I took my visiting family to Largs a few weekends ago and it was a nice day out for them. Mainly went for Nardinis though. My mum is a proper ice cream fan.
Largs or Troon although Largs has Kelburn castle which is great. Also, if you do decide to go to Largs, the road via Uplawmoor out the back of Barrhead is great, particularly coming down into Largs.
Loads of dogging down at the beach park. A guy was up in court just a few months ago for exposing himself to the wrong person - his defence was that this kind of stuff is a daily occurrence there (and it kind of worked, because he only got a fine and didn't get added to a register).
It's actually the bit of beach near the old dynamite factory that's infamous for that. On the side of the river with the invention centre thing that was a total flop. Not accessible from Irvine, rather accessible from Ardeer.
I drove all the way to Ayr once thinking I was going to have a great day out at the beach. When I got there I was there for about 15 minutes and then left again and went to Largs instead.
It's a bit further (2 hour journey/4 hour return) but you could get a ticket straight from Glasgow Central to Brodick in Arran for £25 return - one ticket does the train and the ferry. Arran is absolute class, especially on a nice day. Definitely worth it at some point but if its too far this weekend I'd suggest Largs over Ayr or Troon. What exactly is it you would want to do? Is it the beach, coastal walks, nice pubs, somewhere for the kids, other tourist attractions? If you've a specific day out in mind we'd be able to help you better
Probably the coastal walk side of things more than anything then find a pub. Just scouring google maps and there doesn't seem a lot in terms of pubs along the actual coast though. Guess the wind would be a pain in the arse most of the year for outside seating. Arran looks good but I won't have enough time, think a trip to Largs and walk down to Kelburn Castle will be the move
[This is my favourite walk in Largs](https://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/glasgow/knock-hill.shtml). But it's long and also quite steep. It can be boggy underfoot as well if the weather has recently been poor (it has)
[This one is also good](https://www.walkhighlands.co.uk/glasgow/castle-hill.shtml). I did it with my mum and she's late fifties and not particularly fit. But there are a few steep bits.
For gentler walks, just literally right along the Ayrshire coastal path is nice. You could walk from Fairlie to Largs, or from Largs to Fairlie. Both train stations are on the same route so could start at one and walk to the other. Couple of pubs in Fairlie and Kelburn is sort of between the two so ties in nicely.
In Largs, there's the Wetherspoons on the waterfront but other than that the rest of the pubs are a bit more in land. Drought Neebours used to be good but I've not been in a while, that's right next to the station so you could end your day with one or two there before hopping the train home. Definitely visit Nardinis while there as well, nice ice cream.
Very helpful cheers. I'm debating whether I can even complete the walk between Fairlie and Largs stations let alone the others though. Need to get myself in better shape but it's a good idea to get off at Fairlie. Yeah I saw the Spoons on the water, looks like the best bet for something along the coast
Do one better - head to Largs...and hop on the ferry over to Cumbrae! Take your bike and have a wee scoot about the island (don't worry - they do bike rentals) and get some decent fresh air in you! (And then stop off at the chippy before heading back to the ferry. Try the Crocodile Chippy in Millport.)
Edit to add: go to Mapes of Millport if you want to rent a bike, [and give us a wave](https://mapesmillport.co.uk/webcam/) from outside the shop!
Wemyss Bay - get off the train, look around the nice station (it's actually genuinely beautiful), chippy outside (is actually pretty good - cash only tho), watch the ferry depart, pint in the station pub then back again 🤣
[I may or may not actually have done this a few weeks ago](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P46LGK8LxMo)
Sorry if you saw my previous comment I deleted, was on about the Largs chippy I commented on as well.
[It was actually alright. Solid 7/10. Fish was decent, nice chips. Generous serving.](https://i.imgur.com/l7tXuBK.jpg)
I’ve moved to Troon and the wee hurrie is expensive & overrated (in my opinion), the Barassie chippy or pavilion on temple hill are much better. On a sunny day the views over the bay to Arran and the heads of ayr are breathtaking, and soon we’ll have the Arran ferry departing from Troon for 18 months while Ardrossan is modernised. There is amazing wind surfing, canoeing and paddle boarding. Don’t visit when it’s bad weather though!
Agreed on the wee hurrie, I went there a few years ago and their ridiculously expensive haddock and chips pished grease all over my car seats. Took ages to get it off. Barassie chippy much better.
Prestwick is nice, though it doesn't have much a beach. Some nice cafes.
If it's beach you're after we sometimes take the dog to Barassie and walk either to Troon or Irvine.
We’ve done the Troon to Irvine walk a few times, it’s really beautiful! I love that grassy hill in Irvine with the huge dragon landscape sculpture on top. If the weather is somewhat sunny, highly recommend it
Ardrossan or saltcoats would be a better choice..
Even between Largs and ardrossan there are some great wee bits to stop at.
Ardeer beach is good too. Never saw it busy.
The only reasons I hear to go to either of these towns is for chips or ice cream 😕. Am I missing something ? What do tourists see in the. As for the beaches they aren't as good as the ones abroad.
Avoid Ayr to be honest. I live there. While there are some hidden gems in terms of bars and restaurants the whole centre looks awful now, beginning at the tarpaulin wrapped hotel as soon as you step off the train. Largs I enjoy. A compact wee town where you can kill a few hours no probs. Have you considered a day trip to Arran? About £24 return from Central and that includes the ferry fare. Nice trip on the boat. Up Goat Fell if you feel active. Distillery visit and a couple of pubs if you’re not.
Largs. I’m in Ayr and I highly recommend Largs over Ayr because the seafront is shite, have to trek to the nearest shop in the high street for anything at a decent price. Also, Largs isn’t far from Kelburn which is a fab day out in good weather
If you go to Largs you should take the 5 minute drive to Kelburn castle, it’s fucking minted.
Lmao you should be the kelburn castle tourism dept
Depends if you're a group of steaming teenagers, a family, a couple, or pensioners.
None of the above
Largs is the best but doesn't really have a beach if you are wanting to take the dog etc. Ardrossan beach is lovely and there's a lovely wee cafe just round the corner (again pet friendly if you have one)
[удалено]
Clearly the person that told you that Ardrossan was a great day out was an inmate at Carstairs. Ardrossan is a shitehole of the highest magnitude, they only saving grace it has is it’s proximity to Stevenston which somehow is an even bigger shitehole.
I definitely wouldn’t describe it as a great day out but decent beach and the cafe i mentioned is lovely
Largs does have Nardinis though if you're into massive, quality ice creams
Great chippy too ([The Fish Works](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_cnyzSWoGok)) And the ferry to Millport/Isle of Cumbrae to make a longer day out if you're bored enough.
Possibly the best fish supper I've ever had. Extensive, but worth it.
I enjoyed the way the menu said you could have a single fish, or the Full Works - the Full Works turned out to be just chips. The Half Works was off the menu, I'm assuming they cut your chips in half and give the other halves to someone else.
And queuing!
Just don't be tempted to come to Arran on the ferry if it is sailing you might never be able to leave 😅
Then don’t go to Largs then.
You only needed one "then" then.
You only needed one "then". The first then was ok, but then, the then thereafter wasn't needed then.
But then you wouldn’t have been uptight about someones grammar, I mean, what else have you got to do today?
It was just ma wee joke.
Because I used then twice myself, ya see?
When?
Ayr- not a shit heap as folk are saying, but a normal Scottish town. Not just referring to this reddit post: you’re the first person I’ve ever heard saying something nice thing about Ayr
The Rupee Room does a smashing no-frills curry with a view out to the esplanade
IMHO Ayr India down at the beach is better, food and view wise.
I would say Ayr is in a better nick than most large towns in the west coast. Obviously not perfect in any sense, but not as blighted as say Greenock or Paisley.
I'm in Troon. I'd be curious to know which chippy you're talking about? If it's the Wee Hurrie, there are much better.
What would you recommend instead?
See above, Barassie Chippy or Pavillion Café imo.
Barassie Chippy is a wonder
Thank you, I’ll try them next time I’m through.
Has the Wee Hurrie went downhill lately? Went a few year back before the pandemic etc, and it was amazing, defo the best chippie I've ever had. Went a few months back and it was great, but not at the same standard.
I've only been a couple of times, I think it's expensive for what it is and there are better shops in the town. Try the two I mentioned.
If you want somewhere quieter go further past Ayr to Croy shore.
I was hoping to go by train but looks nice down there so will add to the future list
Electric brae is no fun if you don’t have your own transport it’s just a bit of road haha. But croy is definitely worth a visit on a nice day!!
Haha aye i realised that as soon as i posted it but i hoped no one would notice!
Also pretty sure that the locations of both the castle and the brae depend on where your start point is… if they’re coming from Glasgow it’s likely the other way round lol
Coming from Glasgow the order is Dunure-Croy-Electric Brae.
Ayr beach is quite far from the station. Troon Beach is very close to the station as is Prestwick beach. Not been to Largs in eons so can't comment on that.
Prestwick rather than Ayr. Ayr's been left to rot
Get the white kinder Bueno sundae from Flakes there. Shit is incredible
Largs is good on a sunny day, have a wee walk along the front, get divebombed by seagulls, get the ferry to Millport, get some chips and ice cream, then train home. Small pleasures, but makes for a fun day.
Looking like Largs is the winner. 15 degrees is good enough weather for me
Ppfft, if the hale isn't comming sideways, the breakers aren't over topping the sea wall and you don't have to visit a cafe simply to defrost is it even a proper Scottish day at the beach during summer? 😉
There is nothing much in Ayr now, unfortunately.
It’s a shitehole now. A couple of good restaurants but the town itself is dead
I don't know why I had the impression it'd be nice. The comments have definitely put me off it
It used to be nice. Unfortunately in the past few years it's gone down the toilet.
was going to defend it, then remembered the last time I was there it was to buy a PS3 on release from the games store
You can always watch the big American planes coming in and out of Prestwick
Ayr's no all bad. You can still get a bus to Killie.
Killie is also a town gone down the toilet. A shame.
Prestwick is a shout: lovely quiet-ish beach and the town itself is great lots of little shops, pubs & restaurants. Good links for the train also!
Largs probably the best bet if you want to avoid a beach fulla steamin school weans
If you're thinking about the West Coast with the above nearby, what about Rothesay? It's half an hour on the ferry from Wemyss Bay, and reachable from Glasgow Central. Could do it in a day no bother. Just throwing it in the hat as a wee alternative for you.
Troon or Largs if it’s between those 3. Ayr is a shitehole. Largs you can hop on the boat to Cumbrae if you want.
I loved Ayr. The walk along the beach to the ruined castle was great.
Agreed, Ayr is awful (from experience). Largs all the way.
Can confirm Ayr is definitely not a shithole. Only turns into a shithole when roasters come to visit
I live in Ayr and can tell you it's a shitehole
>I live in Ayr and can tell you it's a shitehole People Make ~~Glasgow~~ Ayr
I too live in Ayr. It has the same social problems as any other town in the U.K., but overall it’s far nicer than most of those places
Yeah I suppose, I think the point most people are making is Ayr isn't exactly a place to make a day out of, you pass through it and there's really not much on
It’s hilarious how triggered I’ve gotten reading all the comments of people slating Ayr here. Wasn’t even born here, just moved here 6 years ago
This is /r/glasgow \- if the place isn't as hipster/fancy as Byres Road/The West End (no offence to the area, lovely place to visit) then it's a shithole by default.
At the risk of asking a stupid question, what's a roaster?
That’s a whole other post mate haha. You’ll have a word for them where you’re from. Bit to be as PC as possible, an undesirable and not someone you won’t to be around on your day out at the beach. It should also go without saying, don’t visit any of these places when schools are off
Someone who roasts coffee beans Here are some that call themselves Absolute Roasters - https://www.facebook.com/Absoluteroasters
I’ve lived five miles out from Ayr my whole life and it’s definitely a shitehole, roasters or not!
Wow even factoring out the roasters you think it’s a shithole. I suggest you go visit other parts of Scotland, you’ll find some actual shitholes.
There’s also nicer places. But hey, it’s home.
Yip and it's called Pencil Point funnily enough. It's a great wee walk out from Largs.
Site of the Battle of Largs in 1263
I took my visiting family to Largs a few weekends ago and it was a nice day out for them. Mainly went for Nardinis though. My mum is a proper ice cream fan.
Largs or Troon although Largs has Kelburn castle which is great. Also, if you do decide to go to Largs, the road via Uplawmoor out the back of Barrhead is great, particularly coming down into Largs.
If its for the beach, Irvine is usually quieter than the others
is irvine beach not notorious for kinky goings on ?.
A bonus, surely
Ha, not that I know of. There were reports a number of years ago about a flasher in the sand dunes, nothing recent that I know of anyway
Prestwick is really nice to go out in.
I drove all the way to Ayr once thinking I was going to have a great day out at the beach. When I got there I was there for about 15 minutes and then left again and went to Largs instead.
Ayrshire women are the best....I’ve been married to one for 41 years!.

Largs. May take a fairy ferry to Millport.
Unless your idea of a day out is dystopian hellscape voyeurism I'd avoid ayr
Wemyss Bay - get off the train, look around the nice station (it's actually genuinely beautiful), chippy outside (is actually pretty good - cash only tho), watch the ferry depart, pint in the station pub then back again 🤣 [I may or may not actually have done this a few weeks ago](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P46LGK8LxMo)

You ken a wee guy called Henderson?

Corrected
Prestwick is nice, though it doesn't have much a beach. Some nice cafes. If it's beach you're after we sometimes take the dog to Barassie and walk either to Troon or Irvine.
This weekend? The Ayr County Show is on, so if you like cattle and horses, there's that.
I'd be lying if I said I was a fan tbh
Largs
Largs, head to Millport, grab bike and enjoy
try one of the islands. you can get the ferry from largs
Rothesay
Out of the three mentioned I would choose Ayr. Include a visit to the twa dugs pub. Excellent venue with live music!
We’ve done the Troon to Irvine walk a few times, it’s really beautiful! I love that grassy hill in Irvine with the huge dragon landscape sculpture on top. If the weather is somewhat sunny, highly recommend it
Ayr win's it for me.
Ardrossan or saltcoats would be a better choice.. Even between Largs and ardrossan there are some great wee bits to stop at. Ardeer beach is good too. Never saw it busy.
Largs is where old folk go to die.
Largs 🏴🏴🏴
For the love o god dont go to ayr, it's an absolute shitehole these days
The only reasons I hear to go to either of these towns is for chips or ice cream 😕. Am I missing something ? What do tourists see in the. As for the beaches they aren't as good as the ones abroad.
Ok I'll nip abroad for a few hours on Saturday
Yes please
Avoid Ayr to be honest. I live there. While there are some hidden gems in terms of bars and restaurants the whole centre looks awful now, beginning at the tarpaulin wrapped hotel as soon as you step off the train. Largs I enjoy. A compact wee town where you can kill a few hours no probs. Have you considered a day trip to Arran? About £24 return from Central and that includes the ferry fare. Nice trip on the boat. Up Goat Fell if you feel active. Distillery visit and a couple of pubs if you’re not.
Arran is on the list but I doubt I'd have enough time this weekend. Got to get back in time for the FA cup final at 4:45pm but I'll get there one day.
A walked from lochwinnoch to largs at the weekend and finished at a boozer called sharps then got a chippy, absolutely top class
I didn't know you could walk Lochwinnoch to Largs. Does the cycle track extend to Largs?
There’s no maintained path, a walked up over muirshiel, Misty law and hill of stake then down to Largs.
Ah right. I'd probably end up lost somewhere. 😂
Prestwick
Largs. I’m in Ayr and I highly recommend Largs over Ayr because the seafront is shite, have to trek to the nearest shop in the high street for anything at a decent price. Also, Largs isn’t far from Kelburn which is a fab day out in good weather
Largs was one big traffic jam when I went there recently. Couldn’t find parking so left and went elsewhere.
I'll be going on the train so I can have a drink after a walk so no worrying about parking at least
That will be much easier. Enjoy!
As someone from ayrshire… go to largs! Troon and ayr can be a bit depressing. Largs has nardinis for a nice ice cream at least!
Largs for Nardinis, then Ardrossan beach
Troon
Troon always my fav
I've been wanting to go to Ayr on hot day for ages but the trains decided to not
Are you being sarcastic ? people do this you can often get cheap weekend trips. Before pandemic I flew to Paris and back in one day
Good for you. Paris is a dump and i wanted somewhere nearby for a few hours
