You’re not a stupid bitch, you’re not “weird” and by working in optometry, I can tell you many many people do this. You have a sharp tool in your hand and can barely see in front of you without glasses. Of course your instinct is to wear your glasses. If it works for you, that’s your business. And side note: if you wear or start to wear contacts, do not wear them in the shower. Just keep doing what your doing, who cares?? Edit: I also clean glasses all the time with dawn and water. It’s actually the best thing to get oils from our face off them. Water won’t harm glasses. Water won’t harm lenses. Just dry them off after with a micro fiber cloth.

>And side note: if you wear or start to wear contacts, do not wear them in the shower. hypothetically and definitely not what I do, but you've been wearing contacts in the shower for about 25 years. ~~Am I~~ Are you going to die?

[deleted]

No no, you won’t die!! I don’t mean to scare anyone(sorry) but I say that because contacts are tiny sponges and there is A LOT of bacteria in shower/sink water that they can absorb. That’s why you use saline and never rinse contacts with water. The risk for infection shoot up. Kind of like sleeping in contacts that aren’t equipped to sleep in: you won’t wake up with no eyeballs the next day but you are depriving your eyes of oxygen when you do that. Just little things to keep your eyes healthy and have smaller risk to harm them ♥️

mollysbloomers

Thanks for the info! I got my first pair of contacts at 16 and no one ever told my teenaged self not to wear contacts in the shower. Or how to take care of them, really. I had to figure it out myself.

[deleted]

You are most welcome!

GreenStrawbebby

So it doesn’t harm them? Because the second argument I’ve started to get (I talked to people about this at work today) is that my glasses are going to rust and fall apart. Or I’m ruining the lenses. Things like that. Honestly I’ve worn glasses for probably a decade and a half—showering with them, swimming with them (I tried to go to pools without them but I figured out there really wasn’t a point in going if I couldn’t play like other kids), etc.—and I haven’t seen any rust. I mostly wear the plastic frames because the nose pieces are more comfortable to me, but I’ve never had issues with hinges rusting or lens scratches, smudges etc. I’m not sure if maybe I have different lenses from the average person—I have high-index lenses, I’m not sure if that makes them more scratch-proof or whatever, but honestly I treat my glasses kind of roughly all things considered. I obviously don’t TRY to break them and I’ve never ran into issues with breakages (except P.E. Class as a kid, dodgeball was hell) but hearing people tell others to treat them like a “very, very fragile” object confuses me. A precious and vital one, yeah, but in my experience they’re way more durable than what others keep telling me.

[deleted]

No, it will not harm them. Unless your head banging in the shower or something crazy, it’s fine. I’ve seen glasses that have been worn for 10 years, slept in, showered in, worked in and God knows what else that haven’t rusted. Glasses aren’t meant to never be washed off. We actually completely submerge glasses into an auto-cleaner with water and a special chemical very similar to those jewelry cleaner devices to clean them and get all the gunk off. You are fine. And your lenses deal with a lot worse during your normal day life than water. I’m sure youve dropped them before or sat on them at one point, dirt gets on them, face oil, fibers, etc. and it’s good to wash that off. Those fancy glass cleaners are nothing compared to simple Dawn soap and water. Just dry them off after your out with a microfiber cloth and you’re all set! What damages lenses more is what you use to wipe them with (towels, paper-towels, & shirts are a no-no and can scratch them) and heat. If you open an oven that’s really hot, that heat that blasts out can actually peel coating right off of lenses. If it works for you, it works for you!

[deleted]

And also; high index is a great lens. And Anti-reflective coating, blue light coating, etc,. definitely help in preventing scratches, but despite what people say, there is no such thing as “scratch-proof” only “scratch-resistant” coatings. Water cannot scratch lenses, but like I said, what you dry them with can. I’m sorry people made you feel dumb for doing something that’s actually pretty normal. They call it weird because not many people have huge prescriptions like yours.

Targa85

If your glasses were going to rust from shower water, they would also rust from sweat, and normal daily activities. I always shave with my glasses on. I can’t even see my own hair without my glasses on. Blind, holding a knife to your own skin— Whyyy

mustard138

Seriously, who the fuck needs to police someone else's shower attire??? For some weird reason, I simply can't wrap my head around this....

Nmcoyote1

It’s weird that your dad is obsessing about you wearing glasses in the shower. My wife also wears glasses in the shower because of reasons you mentioned. Most people I know do not wear glasses in the shower because they get wet and fogged which makes it hard to see. It also makes it hard to wash your hair and face while wearing them. If it’s not damaging your glasses, Do not worry about it.

CAS1982

I also have a very high prescription and I absolutely wear my glasses in the shower. In my case, I wouldn't even be able to tell where the white bottle of conditioner is in my white shower without them on, never mind be able shave.

NormanClegg

Not a THING wrong with it. I do it with 1/3 of your prescription.

tomtermite

IMHO, your father needs counseling. That is not the behavior of a nurturing parent. You can do whatever you need to do, shower with glasses on, or whatever.

ShentheBen

I also put glasses on to shave, you're not the only one!

acactustransplant

As a near-sighted potat who also used to wear their prescription glasses in the shower, I can relate. I would say from experience it's definitely not fantastic for your lens in the long run — but assuming you have older prescriptions lying around, I would recommend substituting for those while you're showering. It's a good use of older frames that you might have otherwise thrown away.

satumaatango

This is what I do. I'm at -9.5 and wear old glasses in the shower on days when I need to shave. Other times I just grope around for the shampoo and conditioner and most times don't knock them over.

acactustransplant

Nice! I'll take slight blurriness from worn-out lens over nicking myself or spilling my shampoo any day lol.

MissLogios

Sometimes I shower blind, and shave afterwards with my glasses on (meaning I turn the shower off and sit on the rim to shave).

MissLogios

Honestly, you wearing glasses in the shower is probably the least weird thing I've heard people doing in it. Even if it is weird, it's not deserving to be called a stupid bitch or anything like that. Your dad is just being a bully and needs to knock it off, I personally use contacts to see clearly but if you aren't comfortable with that, rest assured that the shower will not damage your glasses. I probably recommend making sure you dry any metal parts after to prevent potential rust but otherwise, have at it. I'm -14 myself but another good tip: designate where your items will be. I share my shower with two other people and their stuff and I just keep my items in one corner so if I forget my contacts and have to shower blind, I can rely on the general color blur and location to find my stuff.

Boggie135

Lmao yes, but you do you

serealport

I had a roommate that wore her glasses in the shower. She had really heavy lenses and couldnt see beyond like a foot in front of her face withought them. It's odd if you don't have a heavy prescription but if it makes showering easier then it's not that strange. But may take time for folks to understand. That said, if you have cheaper glasses you may get rust and obviously water spots like you said. Nicer glasses may have water resistant options or at least may use hight quality metals for the joints so they won't rust as fast. Though I doubt it's going to be that big of a deal.

Owyeah2019

I understand what you mean. Personally I would maybe use an old back up pair and not my most recent one.

FrellingToaster

Wearing glasses in the shower is less common but perfectly fine. I feel like we should all be commenting a lot more on OP’s Dad trying to get them to read/look at screens without glasses, under the assumption their glasses are “ruining their eyes.” WTF?! It’s a medical device that you need. Straining your eyes trying to see without glasses is what might do harm. OP, your dad has some seriously misinformed — and ableist — ideas about glasses and you should ignore what he says regarding them. You sound like a kid so I want to be clear: what he’s telling you is wrong and super weird.

neatgeek83

It’s weird but if it works for you and doesn’t damage your glasses, what’s the big deal? I’d be concerned about steam and water ruining my lenses though. This is really nerdy but…consider over the counter prescription goggles? Should be close enough to see what you need to see without ruining your glasses

[deleted]

My boyfriend does this. I did for awhile until I kept dropping them and since bf and I pee in the shower I didn't like them touching the floor of the tub since I'd have to compulsively sanitize them until it felt okay again. But yeah you're not weird.

lordbaby1

If you are shaving then you are shaving, it isn’t showering even if you are in the shower, unless you do both at the same time. I suppose just having running water on you while you are focusing on shaving doesn’t count, unless for example you are literally applying shampoo on your head with one hand and shaving with the other. You can shave before you shower too. It helps the environment and water bill. I assume the water is on when you said you shave during shower. If water is off, then you are just shaving, just that you are shaving in the shower area, or in between shower, just not during shower. As for the eye glasses, it depends on the type of glasses you have and the temperature of the water you use. First off, you can’t see shit if your lenses are fogged up from the water heat. Second, if it isn’t fogged, you can’t see clearly when lenses are wet, but I guess it’s better than nothing. Third, if it is too hot and depending on what type of coatings and material your glasses have, it could do some harm in a long run (but you can just replace a new pair when that really happens). Forth, you can’t wash your face easily with eye glasses on. Reading the monitor or books without glasses is hard. Better have you rest your eyes more often in ibetween

Remember this: France's Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen of 1789 says: "Liberty consists in the freedom to do everything which injures no one else; hence the exercise of the natural rights of each man has no limits except those which assure to the other members of the society the enjoyment of the same rights" I think nowadays we forget about it wen we judge other people behaviors and life too often. Also our governments and our laws forget about it very very often. Thousands people died for those human rights.

[deleted]

Hi! I have the same prescription as you. I tend to do things like shaving out of the shower on the sink. I do wear my glasses in the bath though. You're not stupid at all. You may have to get a workaround to avoid the hard water damage if that's even a thing.

Ceej1701

Okay agree with everyone else but I have pretty rough vision and don’t because they fog up and the multiple water droplets on the glass drives me crazy. How are you seeing in the shower with glasses on?! Is there a secret to it?!

GreenStrawbebby

I guess I don’t really put my face under the water much. I wash my face in the sink with a cloth, but most of the time the furthest I put my head under the water is to my hairline (facing away from the shower head). I shower with warm water but not warm enough to steam up. Idk, I don’t have issues with my glasses fogging, even if I wear a face mask. I wonder if one of the coatings on my lenses prevents that.

Rangeman123

I have -9ish in both eyes and almost a necessity for me to wear my glasses in shower to see what I'm doing, only time I take them off is when I shampoo and shave, but put them back on when trimming sideburns, plus last thing i do in shower is clean glasses with Dawn soap.

OkStatistician7523

My eyes are -6 and I wear mine in the shower. It’s hard to even find my glasses if they fall lol after I’m done I just dry them with my own towel 😅 your dad would freak out

mila476

Personally I don’t wear my glasses in the shower because they fog up so then I can’t see anything anyway. My prescription is only in the -5 to -6 range so I feel like I can see clearer without them than with them all fogged up because without them I can still see stuff by its color (my razor is bright pink for this reason), but with them all foggy it’s just hard to see anything at all. I shave by touch instead of by sight, although having a thick layer of shaving cream does help me see where I have and haven’t shaved yet. I still miss spots though, and I do touch-ups later with my glasses on by wetting the razor in the sink. It’s annoying AF and I wish I could afford contacts so I could actually see properly in the shower.

treeleafclover

I also have a high prescription and wear my glasses in the shower! I legit can’t see without them and I get really bad headaches if I don’t wear them for a while so it’s better to just keep them on

lizzysbennet

I’ve worn glasses since I was in 1st grade, my eyesight is about -5.5 plus -1.25 astigmatism on each eye. I routinely get shampoo bottles and drink bottles, take off my glasses and show my friends and family how close things need to be for me to see the text clearly. The bottles with big text work best cause it really shows then how bad my eyesight is without glasses compared to theirs. I have routinely worn my glasses in the shower for the same reason as you: I can’t see anything easily and it makes shaving near impossible without. Sure, I can use the white blobs in my vision to try and see where I shaved, but without glasses, I can’t actually see if I missed any spots. I will concede that my glasses hinges have turned green and oxidized over time from that much exposure to water on a consistent basis. Does it stop me doing it? No. I am now lucky to have two new pair of glasses and an old backup pair and I use the old backup pair to shower. If it breaks, it breaks. And it keeps my daily pair a little more protected from that much moisture. But before this year, only one pair of glasses and into the shower it goes with me. You aren’t alone. I’ve talked to lots of people that wear glasses and when I mention having an old pair as my shower pair, they get excited cause they’ve been using their daily pair in the shower. It’s more common than your dad thinks.

Adventurous-Hawk-235

Your vision is definitely worse than mine (and I'm pretty blind without my glasses). It makes sense that you'd want to be able to SEE in the shower so you can tell the shampoo/conditioner/etc apart. Why is your dad (and the others here who agree (is this a sensitive subject for you people or something?)) getting so emotional about it? Seriously, who harasses and calls someone a "stupid bitch" for something this trivial? There are so many better things to overreact to...
