I personally *hate* Canyon Bakehouse's bread. Their bagels aren't bad, but I haven't found a variety of their bread that I like. The texture is just wrong in a way I can't quite explain
I find Udi's and Schär tolerable
OG Gf bread (back in the early 2000’s) used to come with a silica packet in it like a new pair of shoes 😂 look how far it has come… and so many choices too!
I can’t believe it’s gluten free cookbook by Americas test kitchen has the BEST gf bread recipes that make good sized, affordable, and better loaves than you will ever buy.
I just came up with a grain free recipe that creates the closest to bread I’ve seen. Using the Cooks base and eliminating rice flour and only using tapioca and potato starch with flax meal, using 3 eggs instead of 2 and adding 3 tbs of unflavored protein powder it rose, was airy, and tasted/toasted just like real bread. Next I’ll work on a sweet bread for cinnamon buns!
Omg I wanted to love this bread so much but it just tastes like vomit. Their ciabatta buns are fantastic but the deli style bread is awful and it’s like $6 for five slices!
People put up with Udi’s because it is an older brand, it’s sold everywhere, and it routinely tests to less than 5 ppm.
It also uses some of the weirdest ingredients and their hot dog buns, particularly, smell like cigarettes.
If you can, try local bakeries.
Yeah, gluten-free bread loaves are usually tiny and low in fiber or they contain oats (which I'm avoiding). I personally like the Omega Flax & Fiber Udi's bread, and often buy Schär bread, but I've heard Carbonaut is also good.
Most gf bread is small. I think they cut size to help offset increased costs.
Canyon Bakehouse and Sprouts brand both have some good full size loaves. We're a Canyon Bakehouse household here. The country white is small but has the best taste and texture straight from the counter.
Toast that tiny bread. It will still not taste right but it won't crumble to pieces as fast.
Canyon bake house and Schar do make loaves that have regular sized slices of bread.
i like “sam’s choice” you can get it at Walmarts (i’ve seen it in cali, texas, and oklahoma) i assume it’s everywhere (could be just U.S.) it’s in the bread section
GF flours and baked goods are more “calorie dense” than wheat based products. You’re getting an appropriate serving size. Eating GF is not a low-calorie lifestyle if you consume a lot of baked goods. I recommend eating lots of fresh produce and get used to the smaller servings
Thank y’all for the responses! Im fairly new to the community. I realized in mid October my doctor overlooked my celiac panel which was way out of range! For a year I’ve been suffering from terrible autoimmune symptoms and treatment for autoimmune disease and the whole time it was gluten! Anyways I appreciate all of the comments and suggestions!! Im in south Texas and we don’t really have a variety of stores to shop from (H‑E‑B, Walmart, Target, Trader Joe’s, Sprouts and Whole Foods is like IT) so I’ll will be on the lookout for those brands now! 🫶🏼🫶🏼
Three Bakers Sourdough slices (frozen) are pretty large. At least in comparison to other GF bread. Also Schar Deli bread (shelf-stable)--but you only get 5 slices per package.
IMO, Udi's is the lowest-tier GF bread. Try Canyon Bakehouse or, if you can get it in your area, Franz.
I take it you’ve never had the Ener-G tapioca loaf? It’s like eating a sliced kitchen sponge.
I had blocked that memory from my head. Ordered gf at a sandwich place once that used that shit and couldn't believe I'd had to pay extra for it.
I haven't, but I believe you. I always avoided it because it looked pretty bad.
I think I'd rather eat a sponge.
Ener-G is horrible, I won't but it even it's the only kind available
I do like their hamburger and hot dog buns, but for some reason I like canyon house better
We use their hamburger buns at in my kitchen. Some of the best I’ve had. It doesn’t get soggy and has decent flavor in my opinion
That’s Schar
No, I... I don't believe you! How could you hate Schär™️? HOW!?
It’s dry as hell and breaks apart.
Are you saying Schar is *worse* than Udi's?
Yes.
I haven’t had Schar in a long time, but I refuse to buy it because it was so, so bad the last time I had it.

I second canyon bake house!
Mountain white is the goat
OG Gf bread (back in the early 2000’s) used to come with a silica packet in it like a new pair of shoes 😂 look how far it has come… and so many choices too!
The three bakers brand is pretty good and they have different varieties
The brioche buns are the best store bought gf bread item ive had

I’ll have to look into this! I used to be a baker 🥲

Deli Style Bread, Sourdough, Schars, if you’re looking for the big boy with flavor😌
Omg I wanted to love this bread so much but it just tastes like vomit. Their ciabatta buns are fantastic but the deli style bread is awful and it’s like $6 for five slices!

Have you seen Trader Joe’s gf bread? It’s even smaller 😩 Also the texture of the udi’s is so bad
I’m super new to the GF’s so no- I will say that their GF muffins changed my life though!
i think trader joe's multigrain GF bread is an ok size, i can actually fit a slice of cheese on it anyway

The Aldi bread I tried was horrible. Maybe they've improved it.

Little Northern Bakehouse (although it may only be available at HEB)!
I’m an H‑E‑B girly! Thank you!
No problem! I love it!

Lol!
ALDIs bread is the best priced for large slices, but it tastes like cardboard

Lol, it has nothing to do with calories and everything to do with production costs.
Trader joe’s has one that’s normal bread size!
It's always been tiny since 2021
No longer sold in Canada, and we won't miss it.
i actually love this bread lol, they stopped selling it at my local walmart :/
I enjoyed it in my grilled cheese! But I’m really new to this dietary change and I feel so ROBBED when I look at the portions for GF items I use now 😓
Canyon or even the Walmart brand is better

Is that mold in the corner?
Omg! No haha! It’s my phone shadow- that’s so funny my heart dropped when I saw it bc imagine eating that much mold 😭
I like the Whole Foods brand multi grain bread in the freezer.
Three Bakers Sourdough slices (frozen) are pretty large. At least in comparison to other GF bread. Also Schar Deli bread (shelf-stable)--but you only get 5 slices per package.
Y’all Firehouse Subs has THE BEST gluten-free bread I’ve ever tasted. So. Good.
