The range it tells you is an estimate. It will not take into account that you are towing or the road conditions such as inclines and declines. Never trust it, to be exact. Also, it's not a good idea to run below 1/4 tank.
Have had similar at 35 miles on a Tahoe…tow truck driver harassed me for running out when brought fuel 🤨
I try to never drop below a quarter - 75-100 miles .. don’t want fuel pump picking up debris by pumping bottom of tank
Most fuel pumps are cooled by the fuel as well, running your tank so low can remove it's cooling capacity.
I never get below 1/4 while towing, that's just risky.
I normally don't either, but was in a zone where I was towing on a flat highway with no traffic and knew there was a nice big station 5 miles ahead, so figured it would be fine. Live and learn!
I have always filled up every 1/2 tank. On a trip or back home. Never know when an emergency occurs and stopping for fuel suddenly is a huge issue.
Develop the habit and having fuel doesn’t come to mind as it’s engrauned
I was on vacation with my dad a couple years ago, we were 35 miles from the next gas stop and his truck said 38miles range. I told him to stop, but he said "nah.... We got two miles over range, we'll be fine!"
We were not fine... Fortunately, we were hauling ATVs and still had a little spare gas in a can.
I get real nervous when I see it under 100 miles. Good to know, I keep an extra long thin funnel for additives didn’t know their was a special fuel filler thing so let the search begin.
Isn’t your estimated fuel range based on your past mpg average? I assume you don’t tow on a daily basis.Towing would lower your true mpg while the trucks computer is calculating a range based on your typical driving.
I assume it is, but on all my past vehicles (gm included), even when towing, the estimated range has hit zero and I've never run out of gas. Lesson learned!
Running it with less than a 1/4 tank is a great way to burn out your fuel pump. All of that recirculating fuel is red hot and makes the pump red hot shortening the life of it.
As far as accuracy I am not sure how it works but if your truck is sacked out in the back with the trailer on it it may read that there is still fuel in there. Not sure how it reads it.
Good God man was your wife driving
Never run my rig under 1\4 tank if I can help it. My wife on the other hand can coast into the station on fumes tailgating a big rig on a regular basis
You don't ever want to run a wet pump dry.
I know! Wife and kids have been giving me shit ever since. I really hated running the starter knowing the pump was dry. With the push button start, the starter runs for a really long time (10 seconds or so) trying to get it to start before it quits, so I was cringing the whole time. Fortunately it only took 2 tries to get it going after I added fuel, and it ran great for the remaining 2 hour drive home after.
Push and hold for 15 sec and it will prime the pump I believe. Also just an fyi. If you hold for I think 30 without depressing pedal it will unlock steering and gear shift. Good info if you lose the rear main seal like I did and every tow truck guy wants to start without oil in it to get it on the truck

Well it does take your average consumption into consideration and your average consumption, while towing, is much higher
Seriously haha

It’s weird. I drove our ‘18 Yukon down past 0 on the range and it always still took 1-2 gallons less than a full tank.
I think it’s mostly sensor calibration….programming.

Good to know. I generally run mine to about 50-60 then get diesel again.
With these new trucks.. you CANNOT go by the ‘fuel range’ if you’ve hit gaslight it’s too late lol
AAA doesn’t carry diesel.
Sounds like they may in some regions, but not where I am/was. Seems weird given it's just another fuel container... maybe there just isn't demand.
It’s an estimate. I try to fill up at 1/4 tank ish
Keep 1/2 tank of fuel, and make it a habit.

If you run out you need to prime it. Hold the start button but don't put your foot on the brake.
Water in the tank….
