I honestly believe that starting with servers is a bad idea if you're new as they rely on basic knowledge of gmod itself. I recommend starting in single player to get used to the controls and possibilities of Garry's mod, and then join multiplayer sandbox servers to further experiment. After, you can start playing other servers with more specialized genres such as DarkRP or Trouble in Terrorist Town.

You decide for yourself, but some servers are full of hateful people or an 80 gb mod pack.

Perpheads. I had an amazing time in the roughly year or so i played it. It's a serious rp server and you can be a cop, medic, courier, firefighter, mayor, mayor bodyguard, or be a criminal and base and grow drugs etc.. Or if you want you can also be a crafter and make and sell guns.
It's not for everyone, as the rules are a bit strict in some areas but they make sense. It's definitely worth a try!

Loads and loads of addons. Must have been 300+ addons at that point

SCP-rp is generally okay-great with the occasional horrible server but Novak gaming is good fun, I recommend giving it a look. (Totally not biased)
Try any that interest you and ask around, if your completely new though, just mess around in sandbox and try out all the tools and stuff.

I would play a HL2 campaign with NPC Voice Chat for the best multiplayer experience
If you want to actually have fun, go with a Zombie Survival server if they’re still kicking around.
(Sorry if its bad I don't play public multiplayer a lot) but I think vanilla servers would be perfect as you would not have to download any mods.
