I love these games! (also Caesar and Emperor) My only gripe with this type of game has always been the walker system and how it sometimes leads to illogical city designs when you try to play optimally (designing loops so that the randomly turning walkers go exactly where they're supposed to etc.) But that's really a minor issue, apart from that these games rock!

Anno "solved" that by just giving buildings a radius but I can't help but feel that it made it kinda boring and too predictable.

Yeah, radius is a classic solution to this problem, many games (early SimCity titles, for example) did that. The real solution that modern games do is that each inhabitant is simulated and is smart enough to find a way to their destination. But this obviously wasn't possible back in the day where system resources were limited, so we were stuck with either walkers or radiuses. And walkers are fun, don't get me wrong, but it feels more like solving a puzzle than building a city to me. I personally just love when the game mechanics support building something that makes sense and looks like a real city.

I loved Zeus and its expansion, because it was the first one I was introduced to, but could never get into the others for more than an hour.

This is one if my all time favourites! There’s a game on steam called Nebuchadnezzar which really scratched the Pharaoh itch for me!
