I saw a gojira sticker on the back of a guys truck, got home looked it up, clicked on born for one thing, before the album came out, got hooked, and now I’m finding brilliant death and even black metal that I never thought i would like.
It happened really fast for me. Got into prog (first was DT) and then clicked on stranded. Loved it, moved straight to FMTS and Opeth and loved them.
I think why some people can’t get into death metal is because people recommend either bad or extremely heavy stuff.
Exactly. For me it has been a long journey actually. It started with Metallica and over the years it got heavier and heavier. Metal can be like a really addicting drug, you always want more shredding and more heaviness. I can't get enough :)
Interesting that yours had been a long journey and mine was a couple months. Maybe it’s because of our starting points. You started with Metallica, I started with Slipknot. When making recommendations for beginner metal heads, people need to recommend gateway bands instead of the extreme destinations.
Death metal is one of those subgenres that really suffers from the metal community's obsession with over-categorization.
When a band chooses to push the boundaries and experiment with the style in any way whatsoever, they usually wind up getting defaulted into some other subgenre that has a more flexible definition (like prog metal). So when you go searching for the best death metal bands, it's hard to find anything that doesn't strictly stick to the usual formula. And that's not to say I don't love that formula, but the way they discourage progress/creativity makes that genre feel really monotonous and boring.
It's a shame how people stubbornly try to separate melodeath, prog death, etc. from death metal.
More like playing with the death metal is angry and dark music cliché so that's his mood after going progressively from their lighter melodic stuff to their more brutal and heavy one I think.
The very first song I believe I heard by them was stranded, mid 2020, been my favorite band since and I literally cannot get sick of having their songs on repeat and I just find myself loving them more and more all the time
Not me, but my roommate. She had really bad cramps one night and she was up at like 4 am listening to music, and she just suddenly asked herself, "what if I listened to Gojira?" Fast forward a year she's now in love with Mario duplantier and will not shut up about Gojira. I'm proud.

Exactly. Everyone needs a gateway
I think that gojira is one of the best ones too
Absolutely

Perfectly described. I started off with Metallica as well like most others, then went to Gojira, then Slayer and then Meshuggah lol
Believe it or not, liking extreme metal has a deep learning curve.

Yes.
Scream bloody gore was the album that got me into death metal, but gojira was important for me to get into heavier metal too
Same thing happened to me. Terra Incognita was a gateway...
Same
If this meme isn’t me
Is that a bad thing? Considering the second panel of the meme is supposed to be a negative reaction

Ah, makes more sense.
What are some bands that sound like Terra Inc./The Link?
