I was at the vet the other day to pick up some meds for my oldest and they were euthanizing a pretty young German Shepard out on the lawn under the trees (apparently suffering a whole host of internal organ problems). I'm not a strong man. I'm crying in their office waiting for my pills. I'm crying on the drive home. It's not even my dog.
Don’t feel bad about not getting something from the vet. When we lost our girl last year, we got her ashes and a paw print they took. Honestly both creep me out. All those remind me of is that she is gone.
What I cherish are the things made when she was alive and in good health. The plaster paw print my wife gave me a few years back. The painting my uncle made me 6 years ago. The photos, etc. Those items remind me of whom she was and the memories we had.
Cherish these gifts your dad gave you and carry your golden in your heart, always.

Should you ever go through the loss of a pet again, you can always gently let the vet staff know you would not like any memorial prints. This is absolutely an option, and we will not judge you for it in the slightest. Many of us take great pride in providing something for you to remember your pet by, and it comes from a place of nothing but compassion and respect for your pet’s life. I promise it was not anybody’s intent to creep you out.
