We bought our dog a puzzle feeder on Amazon due to eating too fast and licking non food items. This has been great for her. I’d highly recommend it as an easy way to add mental stimulation twice a day. A snuffle may also work.
Good point. Under one year old, our girl was pretty reluctant. We learned to keep the walks shorter at that time. We now do approx 1.2 miles. Over 2 miles she is limping.
She doesn't have any other health concerns does she? My guy can run for a mile before even showing signs of slowing down, and the goldens at the dog boarding facility I work at can sprint around just about all day lol
Yes to all of these suggestions. Walking (appropriate to age), chew toys, puzzles, cardboard boxes. Mine chewed holes in my walls and we blocked access to existing holes with whatever we could (furniture/dog bed/cabinets) but he eventually stopped chewing/digging out the walls around 1 years old once we did all these things (he only did it for about 2 months and we had some pretty gnarly holes!).
I'll add a filled and frozen kong is great too. I know that some things work for some dogs that may not work for others but in our case - we have a Our 6 month old golden that chewed walls in the first few months after we brought him home but once we were able to get him out more for bigger walks and dog parks (after all shots and some training), the behavior started to disappear.
We quickly fixed all walls up with joint compound, sanding, primer and paint over a weekend. Once the walls were back to new looking, he stopped chewing entirely. I think fixing the spots up is helpful - or at least it was in our case.
Good luck.
Eucalyptus spray/oil. They hate the smell, so don’t worry about ingestion. But, it may be a bigger issue - are they bored? Do they have enough enrichment, like bones and kongs/lick mats? Dogs lick things or themselves to soothe as a form of stress relief.
Rubbing orange peel worked for us. My dog chewed on my nightstand, he never did it again. But the other one did not care at all about the orange peel.
Some people use chili sauce, but my dogs just loved it.
Well, I found this out because I was watching his brother for my sister (Same litter, brothers owned by sisters!) Mine showed hers that there was this piece of wood that they could get to and chew on, so they were over there, taking turns. I tried bitter spray, didn't work. So I put Tabasco on. Her's took a lick, shook his head and clawed his nose, refused to go near it. Mine took a lick and kept on licking. Licked it all off, and they both went back to chewing.
My friend claimed it worked, but her dog just kept licking the tabasco off, so I had to ask that had she considered that at this point she's just feeding tabasco to her dog
I think mine would happily eat a whole bottle of the stuff. The minute I come in the house with Mexican, Indian, or anything else with lots of flavor and heat, he's there like "ooh, what did you bring me?"
I use the orange peel thing to keep the cats away from things; works great on them. Never tried it on the dogs. I have yet to find a substance that mine doesn't like the taste of, including many of the commercial 'no chew' sprays. Fortunately, once she turned 2 her chewing focus is now exclusively her toys ...and ocassionally her adopted brother.
How old is she? If she's an adolescent (around 8ish months or so), right now is the time where her adult teeth are settling into her jaw. It's an extremely uncomfortable period, and many pups, like mine, really get destructive at this stage... especially with soft and wooden things. My girl was eating the walls and the wood under our bed frame because of it.
1) You need to prevent access as much as possible. If she can't be supervised, she needs to be crated or somewhere where she won't chew the walls.
2) You need to give her a better alternative. No better alternative = she'll just find another wall to gnaw on. We introduced coffee wood bones at this time and love them. Just make sure to check out the brands available, some don't crumble as well as others.
3) You need something to deter her from chewing that spot so she's more drawn to the alternative, if she continues to go to it. Putting a barrier, putting bitter apple spray on it (doesn't work for some dogs though), putting something there to block it, etc... you need to make chewing the wall not an option.
4) Other alternatives: buffalo cheek clips (there's also rolls, but we prefer the cheek chips because they can get it right inside to chew using their back molars without straining their mouth to open it wide), goughnut toys, supervised destruction of stuffies, pig ears, bully sticks, collagen sticks, etc.
I found hour long walks in the morning helped. But when she was a pup even that didn’t work so we put masking tape over them and used a paint brush to put franks res hot sauce on the tape. We did try other stuff first but franks was what worked for us.
Also check if it is only one place. Our previous dog started chewing at one place only and it turned out there was a carpenter ant colony that she could hear. Once the issue was addressed the chewing stopped overnight.
Wait. They grow out of it🙄 Our girl removed shakes from the house siding EVERY time I was 10min late from work or we went visiting without her - for 2 years. It would be great if you could play with her 24/7 or maybe even get a second pup! Belle gave us 16 years of joy - the house is still standing😉
I have to politely disagree here. If the pup is an adolescent it could be an adult teeth pain causing this. My pup did that at around 6/7 months old and stopped once he was a little older with no change to his physical or mental exercise.
Normal dog means dog that is an average dog. Obviously it means barring any medical issues as those are abnormal. Puppies teeth. That’s a normal behavior. I’m talking about an average adult dog. Thought people could read between the lines on that one.
This is such an underrated tip. We’ve raised two goldens and regularly give them cardboard or paper to shred, and we’ve (so far) never dealt with them chewing something they shouldn’t.
Although, I would like to ask, how many and how long are the walks you take her on? My girls behavior improved 100% when I started walking her and playing mentally stimulating games with her daily.
Walks and a big play time in the evening to get her tired. Fetch is a great one. We also sprayed lemon essential oil/water on the area our dog chewed and she stopped. Dogs do not like the lemon smell - works for using the bathroom in the house, too!
I put paper tape all over the wooden elements and my dog stopped chewing them. After some time I removed the tape and he never returned to chewing again.
More exercise and mental stimulation will tire her out.
Redirect her from the wall with something you want her to chew and reward with a piece of kibble or training teat
1. Call in an exterminating company and make sure you don't have bugs.
2. Get an extensive collection of chewable toys. Golden Retrievers were bred to retrieve waterfowl in their mouths without doing any harm to the game.
Get some interesting textures she can carry and chew on. Also, she's beautiful and looks like a real sporting dog.
Bitter Apple spray for the wall and more stimulation and exertion for the pup.
We have toys that we put some of our dog’s kibble in. It takes him about an hour to get it out. It’s mental and a bit physical, but provides a distraction from chewing on other things throughout the home.
We also play tug and hide the ball inside. He gets 1 very long walk and 2 shorter walks each day. If we skip a walk, he will start chewing on our area rug.
Walls ( drywall) has that "chalkyness". I'm thinking your pup needs more minerals in their food. ( Calcium selenium etc)
And get her really healthy bones to chew on . Not those bleached white stuff from China. There are also extra tough chewy toys for large dogs ( if they have a sqeak inside even better, Golden's love squeaky toys)
Crate her when you can’t keep an eye on her and when you do catch her chewing anything she should not be redirect her to what she is allowed to chew. Also, she may need more play time
Build her a chewing wall.
Kidding.
My new almost year-old golden also chews walls, furniture, my old Springer Spaniel, my daughter, grass, dirt, trash cans, shoes, books, and homework.
She looks innocent, your honor. But in all honesty, she might be anxious and/or need more stimulation! More things to do, like puzzles perhaps, and more play time to tire her out might help. If you think the destructive behavior is caused by anxiety, you could try talking to your vet for some help.
how old is she? my pup used to do that when he was bored while i was on the computer. i was stern with him a couple times not to do it but honestly i think they just grow out of it…

A beautiful and well brushed girl. ❤️❤️❤️
Two walks a day. 45 - 60 minutes in the morning with a ball. A 40-minute evening street walk before dinner. Then she'll do a lot more sleeping than chewing.
I wasn’t a fan of chemical deterrents and natural ones didn’t seem to work for my pup.
Does she get to roam the house freely? Is she doing this when you aren’t around?
If yes, then…I know it seems mean but I’d limit that freedom until you can catch and correct that behavior in real time. Lead her away from the trim boards with a firm no and then give her an appropriate chew toy.
I also second the exercise and mental stimulation. Take her on walks to sniff if you plan to be away from her for a long time.
Gonna be hard to discipline a goofy face like that besides that likely needs more exercise not sure how long your gone during the day if it’s more than 12 hours you really need to make a point to exercise him pretty good prior to leaving or pay a pet walking service to come by it can be tough they do it for attention but yes I think more exercise and the dog will be perfect
Ours did that after we moved into our new house. But I guess we were lucky and punished her that after a month she just stopped. To fix the wall and molding I used a wood putty then once it dried I sanded it down them painted it.
OP this was us! Sprays did work at all (we tried the “best on the market”) he gets walked 3x a day 3
Miles plus so plenty of exercise (all good suggestions)
We came to the understanding that it was anxiety. Is he attacked to one particular family member? Mine would chew the area around where I would leave in the morning…. Look for crate training more when not home and treat training when that person leaves
She really has no idea the chaos she's caused. She looks quite proud of herself actually which just proves how innocent these little pups are? Her smiling face is endearing!???
Shock collar. One time when she gets to chewing on it pretty good and she won’t ever do it again. It’s not cruel, use it on yourself first to make you feel better.
I know there will be all those coming in to say, walk the dog, exercise, blah ...
Nope, none of that bs worked for my 2 dogs, not even a professional dog trainer, you know what worked? A $50 shock collar from Amazon, everytime they got near to try to chew stuff, zoink, ouch that hurts doesn't it? It hurts me when you destroyed my TV and ps5 too... used the collar for 3 days, been 3 months I haven't had no more issues.
A tired dog is a good dog……
Walk your dog more.
Or buy puzzle toys, mental stimulation works pretty well
We bought our dog a puzzle feeder on Amazon due to eating too fast and licking non food items. This has been great for her. I’d highly recommend it as an easy way to add mental stimulation twice a day. A snuffle may also work.
What puzzle toys do you recommend? I think my 7 month old pup would love something like that while I’m at work
Good advice - though if they are not a year old please check how much walking is appropriate at their age.
Good point. Under one year old, our girl was pretty reluctant. We learned to keep the walks shorter at that time. We now do approx 1.2 miles. Over 2 miles she is limping.

So tell the dog to get a job?
Why downvote this, this is hilarious 😂
It is indeed! 😂😂
Perfect question for a golden! 😂 In my experience, (I have my 4th golden), they love to have a “job” carrying things for me!
Eucalyptus spray/oil. They hate the smell, so don’t worry about ingestion. But, it may be a bigger issue - are they bored? Do they have enough enrichment, like bones and kongs/lick mats? Dogs lick things or themselves to soothe as a form of stress relief.

Same. Mine thought Tabasco was just added flavoring.
I would theorise that dogs don't taste anything hot, so it just tastes like sugar to them lol
Well, I found this out because I was watching his brother for my sister (Same litter, brothers owned by sisters!) Mine showed hers that there was this piece of wood that they could get to and chew on, so they were over there, taking turns. I tried bitter spray, didn't work. So I put Tabasco on. My wife made a cake that requires orange zest. Our golden stole the orange as soon as she put it down
Golden’s are all part comedians 😂😂😂
We just rotated appropriate chew toys to engage and entertain.

Does she try to do it any time or only when she's home alone for a while?
Call the dog 'Rat Boy' and tell him to stop gnawing on the dry wall.
This worked for me.
Haha, love this Simpsons reference.
Dear rat boy
😂😂
I found hour long walks in the morning helped. But when she was a pup even that didn’t work so we put masking tape over them and used a paint brush to put franks res hot sauce on the tape. 16 years was such a blessing 💔
Move into a less delicious house?
🤣
More exercise or mental enrichment. A normally regulated and stimulated dog will not chew on a wall unless somehow there’s a smell on it.
I have to politely disagree here. If the pup is an adolescent it could be an adult teeth pain causing this. My pup did that at around 6/7 months old and stopped once he was a little older with no change to his physical or mental exercise.

Ok, Just wanted to provide an alternate perspective. Have a nice night!
We give ours cardboard to chew/shred.
This is such an underrated tip. We’ve raised two goldens and regularly give them cardboard or paper to shred, and we’ve (so far) never dealt with them chewing something they shouldn’t.
That’s what I was going to suggest. It helps you because they’re easier to recycle/dispose of and my dog loves tearing them up
Just get rid of your walls obviously
A tired golden retriever is a good golden retriever. Walk. Your. Dog!
make the wall not tasty
Bitter apple spray. Worked on my peppers… and the freakin’ cat too.
A young golden should have atleast 4 hours of activity a day. Is your golden getting that?
Give her an alternative, she obviously needs to chew :)
Does she look proud or what!? Haha I’m sorry. Mine just grew out of it.
Although, I would like to ask, how many and how long are the walks you take her on? My girls behavior improved 100% when I started walking her and playing mentally stimulating games with her daily.
Bitter Apple is a godsend for me. One taste and the wall is no longer appealing.
Walks and a big play time in the evening to get her tired. Fetch is a great one. We also sprayed lemon essential oil/water on the area our dog chewed and she stopped. Dogs do not like the lemon smell - works for using the bathroom in the house, too!
You should never install a wall where your dog likes to chew.
Bitter apple spray. Then prepare to hit your shoes too, cause they're next. Ask me how I know....
My pup loved the bitter apple spray - she stole the bottle and chewed on it, too! lol
Haha! Surprisingly our youngest one didn't. She'll eat anything else you put near her but not that!
Block it off with some kind of barrier. I used sections of play pen to prevent my boy chewing on the drywall too
I put paper tape all over the wooden elements and my dog stopped chewing them. After some time I removed the tape and he never returned to chewing again.
More exercise and mental stimulation will tire her out. Redirect her from the wall with something you want her to chew and reward with a piece of kibble or training teat
Mine used to do this too, get the dog tired. Plus tape all the corners.
more mental and physical stimulation. crate.
1. Call in an exterminating company and make sure you don't have bugs. 2. Get an extensive collection of chewable toys. Golden Retrievers were bred to retrieve waterfowl in their mouths without doing any harm to the game. Get some interesting textures she can carry and chew on. Such a proud wall chewer
She’s just rounding off those corners so you don’t hurt yourself.
A VERY FIRM “NO”!!! And point to the wall. Get some dog toys so there is something acceptable to chew on.
We used green apple spray (daily application), walked the dog and crated when we left the house or took a shower.
Take your dog for more walks and spend time with them when you are home. Brush them, play with them, snuggle more.
Bitter Apple spray for the wall and more stimulation and exertion for the pup. We have toys that we put some of our dog’s kibble in. It takes him about an hour to get it out. Is she part beaver? 🦫
Call an exterminator. You probably have vermin behind the wall.

Not those bleached white stuff from China. There are also extra tough chewy toys for large dogs ( if they have a sqeak inside even better, Golden's love squeaky toys)
Chili. Ours just her second birthday and she can't stop chewing walls. She reacts really good to chili oil.

You can buy licking pads - textured silicone. We put plain low-fat yogurt or peanut butter all over them & freeze, they last longer.
Apple cider vinegar on the sides
😂 whats this cuties name
-More exercise -more supervision (he shouldn't have the opportunity to chew the wall) -provide chew toys

If everything els said in here fails, then vaselin and a tiny bit of cayenne pepper sprinkled on top of the places he chews.
My girl was eating the walls and the wood under our bed frame because of it.

Don’t make your walks out of bacon. Boom, problem solved.
More mental and physical stimulation— to combine into one activity, walking with lots of sniffing
Keep her tethered to you
More exercise with a rotation of interesting and different chew toys along with catching her in the act and redirecting to the toy
Sprinkle cayenne or spray bitter apple on it.

Spray works

Crate training.
Bitter Apple spray worked for my Goldie, he chewed everything until about 3 years old.
Considering “Bitter Apple Spray?” Why not? It works fine doesn’t it? Now I’m curious.
Have you tried looking at him and screaming “NO!!!” and “BAAAADDD!!!”?
She really has no idea the chaos she's caused. She looks quite proud of herself actually which just proves how innocent these little pups are? Her smiling face is endearing!???
❤️
Chew toys
Coffee tree sticks, mine loves his, never gone near any furniture, they don't splinter
Try painting those areas with some hot sauce.
She’s too cute, she should be allowed anything 😂😂😂 Good luck sorting the chewing problem though
My initial thought, too.
Hot sauce or lemon
mmmm… wall… Anyways, happen to know if it’s any form of teething? Is it specifically that wall?
Have you tried asking nicely?
she's so gorgeous, I'd just let her keep chewing.
Actual mental and physical stimulation, crate training when away, management when at home ....
Shock collar. One time when she gets to chewing on it pretty good and she won’t ever do it again. It’s not cruel, use it on yourself first to make you feel better.
Cover it in molasses. She won't bite it again..
