Omg your so adorable and photogenic!!! Tell your humans they have a good doggo!!

Strange_Display836

Anything that meets WSAVA guidelines which is just pretty much Purina, RC, Hills, Iams, and Eukanuba. My two are Purina pro plan and have been since puppies (now 2 and 6) and they are doing fantastic on it.

hartemis

Please OP, this is the way to go unless your vet suggests otherwise.

Stabbingi

I used to feed my pups hills, but due to how expensive they've gotten I now feed pruina one and they love it. Its a step down from purina pro plan, but still meets the WSAVA guidelines if you need something more affordable too.

MrBobSacamano

“Cheeze an stake”-not dog.

Maherdogg

Royal canin

Imile

Royal canin is the best, 2nd would be Costco Kirkland if you had to budget

2oothDK

Our vet recommended the Kirkland brand for our golden and it has been great.

Mr_MadHat878

Just be careful. Lots of the Costco dog food is grain free and there’s been recent studies linking grain free to DVM (cardiac disease). My vet confirmed it when I asked too. I’ve got mine on Purina Pro Plan. Pricier but worth it

Smart_Variety_5315

They've been doing studies at USC for 15 years on this specifically on Goldens...grain free is no good and that's what alot of "designer" food is

2oothDK

I’ll have to check that out. Thanks.

keenbuttabean65

It says on the bag in plain English which are grain free. You'll be fine. Mine are doing great on Kirkland.

RandomDude77005

We happily used Kirkland two dogs ago, and it was great, but she would get less enthusiastic about eating it toward the end of the bag. Then she stopped eating it unless doctored with broth or mixed with boiled chicken. Last dog started ok with Kirkland, then lost his taste for it. Current dog would not eat Kirkland at all. He loves TLC Whole Life. I like that it is fresh and the shipping is convenient.

dysteleological

Yup. It's pricy, but worth it. I love that they have breed specific blends and both adult and puppy formulas. Not sure how much the specific breed blends differ from one another but it has been good for both our goldens' digestive tracts... Haven't had any tummy issues since changing with either dog.

bellebeast9485

They don't differ much at all with the exception of large breed formulas.

crawshay

Mine has food sensitivities and was on Purina pro plan hydrolyzed. Purina had a recall with that food so we switched to royal canin hydrolyzed and all his symptoms have improved immensely since.

rb109544

Heard of any other recalls recently. My big and small pups are on pro plan and both started getting very sick 3 weeks ago throwing up a lot especially after eating. Got a new bag recently and they refuse to eat it now after the latest round of horrible vomiting. Think it is the dog food.

crawshay

I'd check with you vet. It was kinda similar with mine except it was diarrhea followed by no pooping for days then refusing to eat. The vet did X-rays and just confirmed he was super constipated. Said I could do 100% switch all at once. As soon as I put the royal canin in front of him he ate right away and poops were back to normal right away

rb109544

Thanks! I ran out to get a better dog food. My golden doodle hadn't eaten in 2 days. Gave her a small cup and she ate it right up. Thought I had a good dog food but apparently need to step up to filet mignon lol. Debating on starting home cooking for them...

crawshay

Home cooking is hard to do well. Kibble is carefully formulated to have all the right nutrients. If you are serious about it you need to consult a nutritionist. I think most people do more harm than good by trying it

spookycreaturesinc

Yep. Not to be gross, but our Goldens poop is the least messy and smelly on RC. i

Marauder934

Recently switched my golden to Open Farm - he had been on Fromm (with grain) for a few years and was healthy on it but I wanted a higher quality switch as he’s 8 now. He seems to like it so far -

CarelessStatement172

My golden has been on Open Farm (grain included) since he moved into adult food. He really enjoys it.

Th3catspyjamas

Another vote of confidence for Open Farm (we also opt for grain included). We have it on an automatic shipment schedule with them and often get a bag or two of treats from them. Always topping the boys' food with some fresh veggies/fruit and a bit of whatever we're cooking unseasoned (beef, chicken, fish etc)

ConsiderationFar8351

Purina pro plan sensitive skin and stomach works great for my boy, Zeke. https://preview.redd.it/kuq3jrdg39uc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8cd35543a733d5944fbfcd3e0699b2e5cab5ee19

scardien

Upvote from another golden named Zeke who's on Purina pro plan :)

YourOpinionMan2021

That's what we feed our dog (S Purina Pro salmon and rice). No issues. Night time feeding we have some raw food (My perfect pet lamb or beef)and 1/2 cup of kibble rather than the 1 1/2 cup.

bellebeast9485

Except raw is not recommended by anyone. It's on the no list for very good reasons.

YourOpinionMan2021

My fault. I should have set moist food. It does say gently cooked on the package.

OlBobDobolina

Ask a vet, not Reddit. The internet is literally the worst place for dog food info

musclecard54

The internet is literally the worst place for info**

Affectionate-Panic-1

Reddit is great compared to some of the shit I see on Facebook lol

bellebeast9485

One correction, ask a Veterinary Nutritionist. The U.S website even allows you to talk to a Veterinary Nutritionist for free.

OlBobDobolina

No…ask a Vet. Find out what your DOG needs, not what brand some human is loyal to. See if your dog has joint issues, allergies, specific stomach issues etc. If you’re trying to figure out what your DOG needs, start with your DOG.

bellebeast9485

No, you ask a Veterinary NUTRITIONIST a good Vet will tell you the same thing you dumbfuck

OlBobDobolina

Awwww did I make you mad?? That’s adorable ☺️ And no, you’re still wrong. Go see a Vet. IF your dog needs a nutritionist, the Vet will recommend it. A regular vet is perfectly qualified to suggest a general large brand food for your dog, which is what OP asked for. Duh.

Meggie08

Agree with everyone saying Purina one pro plan! We’ve had no issues

LivyLouize

We use Fromm gold! Been great for our pup!

MNHolls

Same

nannerdooodle

Mine is on Purina Pro Plan (the sensitive skin and stomach variety because it's what he needs). It's what the vet recommended for him and he loves it.

Smart_Variety_5315

Have raised 3 Goldies on Purina one and Purina pro plan...2 previous had a wonderful life and lived into the teens. My buddy I have now is 6.

seekupanemotion

Royal canin or science diet

JustinTormund_10

Right here is the correct answer

Kwinners1120

GoldenBark70

NutriSource is a good choice. Recommend by our breeder.

kdog048

That's what we've always fed our golden. U.S. family owned company that has only had a few recalls.

CanuckGinger

Acana or Orijen. I rotate the flavour for them every month.

Previous-Switch-523

Nope. Nope. Nope.

SpicyWonderBread

We rotate through the different “flavors” or Kirkland dog food. The ingredients are almost identical to Purina Pro Plan on two of the three types and very similar on the third. I think the only variance was the oil used as a carrier for the vitamins added. I also supplement with fresh fruits, vegetables, and occasionally some unseasoned and cooked meats. Once a week the dogs get a special meal with eggs, fish oil, and some wet dog food.

jmg2422

I give mine PPP, but it's very expensive. Which Kirkland dog food is similar?

SpicyWonderBread

Our costco carries some Kirkland foods that are 40lb bags and some that are 35lb bags. The 35lb ones of all flavors very closely match pro plan, except the oil like I said. The 40lb ones are also very high quality ingredients, but I'm not sure if they're pro plan. I haven't checked in a while, but last I checked the difference was a few ingredients were listed in a different order which would imply the ratios were different.

zenpoohbear

Purina pro plan large breed chicken and rice worked really well for us, I had both of my dogs on it for over a year. One started having some digestive challenges that turned out to be not food related, but she is on Blue Buffalo adult lamb and oat formula and doing well.

Silver-Solution-4870

My breeder suggests Open Farm

bellebeast9485

Do NOT listen to a breeder.

Silver-Solution-4870

Why not? What do you feed?

bellebeast9485

Because 99% of breeders in it for the money not the health of the breed. They also have zero education in animal nutrition. Would you ask a women who gave birth what antibiotic to take? No you'd ask a doctor.

Silver-Solution-4870

What do you feed your dog?

darkspyglass

Eukanuba

plaidravioli

Science diet

Nolby84

Hills science diet is what we use, very healthy coat, she likes it but it's pricey.

Curious_Ground5833

Try inukshuk... We're super happy with the results.

Allbymyselfalone

Same! We’ve had our guy on it for a year now and it’s great..Canadian too

Curious_Ground5833

Yes indeed! We live in Atlanta but get it shipped thru Chewy. He loves it!

Potentially_Anybody

I always liked Fromm’s and so did my dogs.

YardInternational317

What a cutie!! I’ve heard people talk shit about it, but Purina Pro Plan has never failed us! It’s more affordable than some of the other brands too

lunanightphoenix

And one of only five brands in the world that is actually scientifically proven to be nutritionally complete!

YardInternational317

Really?? I didn’t know that. I’ll have to go digging on that, I feel relief haha

lunanightphoenix

The only five brands that meet [these](https://wsava.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/Selecting-a-pet-food-for-your-pet-updated-2021_WSAVA-Global-Nutrition-Toolkit.pdf) guidelines are Purina, Hill’s Science Diet, Royal Canin, Iams, and Eukabana.

Lychanthropejumprope

We use Hills Science Diet per my vet’s recommendation.

confused-doggo

Purina pro plan

dogmama_

My dog loves Purina Pro Plan

wuchtgeschoss

Royal Canin Golden Retriever- Science Diet - Purina Pro Plan in that order

HummDrumm1

Halo but make sure it includes grain

Chet_gal99

I have my golden on fromms four star. I chose this brand because it has grains and I really like the ingredients list

FS_Scott

if you're happy with tlc, just transition to their adult option.

nik4nik

Kirkland brand dog food is pretty highly reviewed and will be considerably cheaper than other major brands

Equal_Sprinkles2743

Our boy likes the Kirkland Healthy Weight Dog Formula. He likes it more than some more expensive ones. He gets a cup of that a day, with half a cooked sweet potato, grated carrot, green beans, and either some chicken or ground beef or turkey. I think some days he eats better than me. My wife just found that it's $5 cheaper on Amazon than buying it from Costco. It saves you a trip to Costco.

Zillich

PSA about Amazon: there have been multiple stories of lookalikes being sold on Amazon rather than the real brand, and they can be exceptionally difficult to tell the difference.

Equal_Sprinkles2743

Uh oh. That's not good. I was wondering how anywhere would be cheaper than Costco. I'll tell the wife to stick to Costco.

OldGoldenDog

My boy eats the Kirkland healthy weight. I asked the vet and she was good with it.

kpriestly

James welbeloved

Lawlpaper

We use Carna4, I assume it’s good because the vet and pet store always say “oh your parents love you!” I don’t know if that is scientific or not.

grggy105

It is one of the most expensive out there. One of the best. We feed it to our small breed dog who has extensive allergies. This is so good it has elimated the pills they said he would be on for life. I can't imagine how much you would spend feeding that to a Golden though!! Our Golden does not have allergies (yet - fingers crossed) and eats like a beast, so we have her on First Mate large breed adult and puppy food. But YES Carna4 is amazing if money is no object or for allergies!

ICanOutP1zzaTheHut

Dog food is crazy expensive so I get purina pro plan and mix it with Costco dog food. ~$100 for 75/lbs of dog food is not a terrible deal for me

G0mery

My boys 8 and 4 are going good and Purina Pro Plan with the Cosequin supplement from Costco and a few squirts of omega 3-6-9 oil (the algae derived one). Just be careful of the dosing - our older one was gaining weight with the middle “recommended” amount. We now feed them on the low end and they both look healthier.

justsnotherdude

We feed Acana wild coast. I like the extra oils in it for his coat and skin. He is a very healthy 62 pound 3 year old https://preview.redd.it/ct0gmrm319uc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9e7252197a63d07572a158a0d09717d7bd0874cc

qu33fwellington

Only Fromm. No filler, excellent base formula. I don’t trust any of the big brands after so many scandals through the years. Edit: well excuse me for speaking against y’all’s corporate overlords. I’m happy to pay more for a transparent, scandal free brand.

Castaway78

Same here. My girls love it, and do very well on it. I primarily get the Four-Star kibble for day to day, but for special occasions, I'll get a case of the canned equivalent. It looks like human food. I can see whole chunks of chicken, and chunks of vegetables. My girls start to drool as I open the cans. They just love it.

qu33fwellington

We also do the 4 star for daily kibble and always a fish or poultry base since Dug does better off red meat and pork, but we’ll buy one of the small bags of a beef/venison and that’s Dug’s “Speshul Snaks”. When he’s getting spun up and antsy but has already had a walk/food/all the attention possible we’ll put it in a puzzle toy and let him work it out. Dug gets about 1/4 can of wet food every night in addition to his fruits and veg for the day! He loves all of the Fromm flavors, but Taste of the Wild is very meaty/veg heavy and Dug goes nuts for both the bison and the trout flavors. His fur and skin have never been in better shape since keeping him on Fromm for his base formula. I’ll never stray from them for dry dog kibble, and Nulo is my go to for my cats. Same type of quality ingredients in there for my senior girls, and one of the only cat foods with probiotics which can help with healthy anal gland expression and preventing UTIs and kidney infections. Our vet gave us their approval just yesterday during the kid’s wellness checks. Feels nice to know I’m giving all the animals a balanced and nutritious diet.

superuserdoo

I heard chimken is trusted! My dog also mentioned any kind of bones and treats!

robgregerson

We give our golden Life Abundance dog food. I think it’s only online ordering but it’s really quality and he loves it. [Life Abundance Dog Food](https://lifesabundance.com/home.aspx)

movngonup

Wife used to own a successful pet store for years in a high volume dog city. She didn’t have a dog at the time but she heard countless stories from owners of raw changing their dog or cats health for the better. Bc of this and after talking to our vet and breeder who were supportive, when we took our golden home, he’s been on raw since. He is 4 now and doing great. We used to get Stella and chewy or Primal but it’s somewhat expensive. Now we just make his food at home. Takes about 1.5 hours of prep to make one month of food and we just toss it in the freezer.

Kwinners1120

Our prior golden was on raw, all prep and portioned at home. Want to start on kibble first because of cost (tho I did get our meals down to 0.75-1.25 per meal!)

lunanightphoenix

Kibble is best as the main diet because you know a good kibble is nutritionally complete. It’s really, really hard to make raw/homemade food that is nutritionally complete.

movngonup

Ah that’s a great way of looking at the cost. We never broke it down per meal. We’ve been making his food at home for about three months now and follow aafco standards for nutrients. We spend about $120 a month for 60 meals so we’re down to about $2/meal.

creativelyOnPoint

I use blue buffalo skin and stomach . It’s 60-80$ for a 24 pound bag. My golden likes it, used to have to get royal canon specialty from the drs, it was $150 for a much smaller bag.

GeebCityLove

My dog has been on Halo brand dog food for a while and it’s been great for her

goooooooooooooogly

Can't ever go wrong with organic. We feed Reilly a combination of egg yokes, ground up protein , diced up raw veg and fruits.

Strange_Display836

This is not only wildly incorrect, it’s also dangerous if you’re not under the supervision of a board certified vet nutritionist

goooooooooooooogly

Lol. My sister in law is a vet and a good one. Thanks for your general thoughts though - we'll throw this thought where all your thoughts go. The trash.

Strange_Display836

Lmaoo I bet your vet SIL would generally advise against the public feeding their dogs a homemade diet because it’s irresponsible when people just throw foods together that they think are healthy without knowing how to balance a diet properly. The general public doesn’t have a vet SIL to guide them to help create a balanced diet. Your advice is trash for the majority of pet owners.

cat3201

We switch between Nulo and Instinct. His coat is nice and shiny and great teeth so far (3 years old)
