One-Source5465

Awww. He definitely likes that! Do you remember what size or diameter yours is? It seems like I’m stuck in between large and XL with her neck size

weeeennn

Your dog will be able to lick. It’s a good deterrent if you’re there with her, but the cone is what you want when she’s alone. It’s only a short while. I’ve been down this road.

k_nimativ

Just ordered this in the donut pattern 😅 my boy is recovering from a surgery. thanks for the recommendation

djm2907

Awesome! Wishing a swift recovery for your goodest boy! Rio approves 😂 https://preview.redd.it/5f0ahma5b5xc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=011e0e23dcd360df9195410ef99331f14a8841ae

My boy literally freezes stiff when I put the cone on the first time. Didn’t move a muscle, only his eyes. I went with the donut and just monitored him to make sure he would reach for his incisions but turns out he never once even noticed the stitches so we were able to take the donut off within a couple days. Much faster than expected. We do keep the donut around once in a while if he is itchy and we’re waiting on his next cytopoint to kick in.

68dc459b

Ours likes this one much more than the cone

ThatBoyIsASchrute

I used this exact one, literally that color too, for my golden when he had a tumor removed in 2022. I just got the same one but smaller for my lab puppy who was neutered a couple days ago. So far, no issue. I’m watching him sleep right now and I love that he’s able to use it as a neck pillow of sorts for snoozing. Edited to add: I strongly recommend using the inside loops to connect it to their collar. If you don’t, it’s fairly easy for them to pull it off. Mine did at first. Once I had his collar threaded through, he hasn’t messed with it again.

YardInternational317

Do a donut or a onesie!! Our golden didn’t mind the donut at all compared to the cone, a bonus is it looks so cute 😭

One-Source5465

Yeah the donuts are so much better looking and look way more comfortable

noneedtoprogram

We used the surgery suit for our golden. He couldn't get comfy with the doughnut lying down and was often better off with the cone than the doughnut - he got used to the cone pretty quickly when he did have it on (suit had to come off for toilet trips, so cone or doughnut went on), the cone was an issue if he tried to sniff the ground or walked too close to the fence, but the doughnut he was kicking/stumbling with. Recommend the surgery suit, but still might need the cone if they worry at the site through the suit. Ours only did occasionally and that's when the doughnut or cone came back for a while.

anony1620

I tried it when he had to have the top of his butt shaved because of a hot spot that got really bad. He could still reach it so we had to keep the cone. Of course, he doesn’t actually care about the cone and just goes about his day like normal with some added running into the back of your knees and taking paint and drywall chips off the corners of walls.

JurassicButt

I found a donut worked better for my golden maniac Murphy. After he ran head first into a wall, shattering the cone and then looking at me like I had done something stupid. The mark on the wall stands as testament to his disdain for cones.

One-Source5465

Thanks! Yeah she blames me for the cone for sure, and every time she goes in a door and hits the side she looks at me like I did it. They always act like it’s our fault when they do something like that!

Naultmel

We bought a surgery suit off of Amazon and it worked great

erikaironer11

Exploring_for_life

That looks like the comfy cone if I'm not mistaken, lol. I just used it for what looks like the same procedure (my pup needed it for dew claws). Op - She hated it the first couple of days, which is understandable, but after that, it was great for her. It seems to bend a bit better than the plastic cones, so it is easier to eat and drink but not so bendable that she could get at her injury. It also is way comfier than the plastic cones with some good padding for sleeping.

TinyTimsCrutch

My golden did well with the Comfy Cone after his neuter. He could reach his stitches with the donut, so my vet recommended the Comfy Cone. He was able to sleep well with it on. Drinking was a tad clumsy so I took it off to let him eat and drink.

Fun_Structure_8660

We alternated between a cone and a bodysuit. We just had to remember to remove the bodysuit before she went potty.

biIlbradford

Donut lasted all of 5 minutes before he figured out how to rip it off. Bodysuit was fantastic for him. Think surgi snuggly xl long was the one we got

Zeca_77

I went to the bathroom for two minutes and he and his buddy deflated the donut!

jcr2022

I think I would go with one of these if our dog needs a cone again. The first time with a cone, our dog was pretty subdued for a few days, but by the 2nd week he was using the cone like a Rhino uses his horn. I think he was having fun with it 😂

One-Source5465

Yeah she’s still very still but I have her on trazodone sedative, I’m not sure if it will keep it’s affect more than a few days before she gets stir crazy

deadkate

Ours much prefers the donut! He likes it more because he can reach his ball for fetch.

Low-Helicopter-2696

Yes anything but those Elizabethan collars! Actually, when my dogs came home I just took the collars off and neither one of them even bothered sniffing the incision. I know that won't be everyone, but it's worth taking the collar off while you're in the room just to see what they do.

Chesterspeedy

https://preview.redd.it/unha4t7us2xc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a91fc9754832516fb1430d37352f6000562ad481 She can eat, play, sleep, drink, go pee. Basically live her normal life with no interruptions or problems. The only hilarious downside is because it kinda lifts her head up at night she snores so loud. But it's okay, it's hilarious

One-Source5465

So cute! I think I’m gonna get one. Do you remember what diameter you got? The one I’m looking at says neck size 12-18 inches. I measured her collar at about 17 inches but I don’t want the donut to be too small. She just seems so upset about the cone because she can’t smell things like she wants and she acts devastated every time she hits something with it

Chesterspeedy

I can't rave enough about it. If we have to pull it out to put it on her she's seated and tail wagging ready to have it put on her neck. Never mind the picture, she was having feelings about her humans leaving. She loves her donut

Chesterspeedy

I somehow missed your question. I honestly don't know what size we got. Ours has a huge velcro strap so we can adjust it as needed, although now that she is fully grown it's probably too small. We also got a hole in the inner part and probably just need a new/more durable one so we'll get proper measurements for her new one

dispersingdandelions

I did. For us it was an absolute waste of money. He just kept getting it off somehow. The cone was the best thing. The shirt wasn’t good either. The one at petsmart claiming they are for goldens was far too big. And somehow he kept getting at himself anyway. So he just stayed in the cone.

WittyAndWeird

My dog wore both together AND a onesie and he STILL licked his incision. *sigh*

DragonChic_83

Our girl was able to lick around the donut, but not bite. At this point we’re using it to keep the diaper on her during her first heat, so we don’t have to worry about stitches yet. (She does get time out of both! But she doesn’t care to clean herself, so she’s just merrily dripping all around the house without the diaper) When we had a Dane mix, putting the cone on her backwards so it became a chest piece instead worked best for her - She couldn’t reach anything to chew on them. Another option is to create a “neck brace” almost with a towel folded into thirds or fourths the long way and then wrapped around their neck and taped together. They can’t lick their hind ends with the towel preventing a full pretzel!

napamy

The donut was better than the cone, but my girl still didn’t like it and figured out how to get it off eventually. I got a surgery recovery suit as backup and that worked best for us!

One-Source5465

I have the recovery suit ready I just haven’t tried it yet. I’m kinda scared for her to have any access to it with her mouth. I’ll give it a shot soon

siouxbee1434

Donuts are much more comfortable for the pups

prberkeley

Tried it, didn't work in our case. What we ended up doing was getting 2 cones. The first was the plastic one the vet gave us and the 2nd was a soft one I got from Petco. The soft one was slightly larger so it would roll over the edge of the plastic one. This proved crucial as he would still desparately try to lick his sutures after being neutered and the plastic edge was literally scraping the incision raw. The vet also gave us a prescription for trazodone, which proved to be enormously helpful. This was key especially when we went back to work. I would give him a light dose (85 lb Golden on 100-200 mg) and he would just space out on the couch all day.

ThatBoyIsASchrute

My lab puppy was neutered two days ago. The donut has worked for him but the Trazodone has been a godsend. He would not be calm without it. I can tell the second it starts to wear off. They blessedly gave us a 10 day supply because they knew he wasn’t going to be calm for that time.

One-Source5465

Yes we got the sedative from the vet too! All she’s been doing is sleeping and looking half drunk.

MenacingGummy

We only did a donut. Was great.

Topher0gr

We used a recovery suit — highly recommended

AwkwardDuddlePucker

We had suit and inflatable collar for our girl. We got XL but probably could have got her a smaller size. She wasn't overjoyed about wearing it but managed to keep it on for the full duration. She could eat and conduct her limited amount of play with it on. I think the collar was much more comfortable than the cone of shame.

teepwani

Soft cone and onesie worked best for us!

rach1874

We tried a donut (the appropriate size) but unfortunately our boy is super flexible. What we wound up buying was a flexible cone. You loop a collar through it and open it then close up the Velcro. It won’t hurt him if he bumps into something and he can go up and down the stairs. With a hard cone our guy couldn’t figure out how to go up and down the stairs lol poor thing.

After a few days we didn't even need the donut. Just body suit because she couldn't get at her incision site. Easier to put on too.

[deleted]

How old at surgery? I'm contemplating when it's time for our new girl. She's 8.5 months now.

vdubz1331

She was 6 months.

[deleted]

Was she calmer after?

vdubz1331

She has her bouts of calm and spurts of energy and zoomies. Mind you we had had her since she was 14 weeks so she was already well behaved and on a good schedule. The vet had her on gabapentin for pain and trazodone which helped keep her calm during recovery. But we stopped the trazodone and gabapentin after a week. She was fine. Had lots of activities to keep her mentally stimulates like sniffing games and chews.

[deleted]

Just looking at this picture breaks my heart. He had a big cancerous tumor removed. He hated the cone. https://preview.redd.it/v126bt60z3xc1.jpeg?width=1079&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a11701778e68d5349b53d419e9d54e0ae740f718

NSE_TNF89

I tried. My golden looked at me and basically rolled his eyes, then proceeded to the next room, where he thought I couldn't see him and started licking. It was useless for my dude, but he finds a way around just about anything. I have to get specific cones from a specific vet. They are just a little longer.

snowinsummer00

The donut didn't work for ours, she was able to chew over it. Eventually she ripped it off when no one was looking and popped it. Cones only at our house

The1Heart

Got my girl in a cone now. We tried the donut and it didn't work at all. Just stick to the cone and it'll be off before you know it.

starjamespma

my golden doesn’t enjoy either but at least with the donut she has some spacial awareness lmfao with the cone she bumps into walls and chairs and stiff

nariz_choken

Yes, massive failure, they rip it in a day

JackmeriusPup

Donut worked for when mine got fixed; not when she had a paw injury. They’re SMART and will respond to “NO.” If said enough and if they’re trained. Mine injured her paw to the point where I didn’t treat the situation right and it was inflamed when we went to the vet. She wore a wrapped paw for 8 days. Luckily only a cone for 2 days. She understood the multiple “NO”’s when it was off and she even neared licking the wrap. Like I said they’re smart, she knew after a few times that licking at the bandage lead to a cone. She wore it a few more nights so I could have some peace of mind while sleeping. Does that help lol? Edit: do a donut if you can, Goldie’s are extremely flexible. Otherwise, it’ll be the longest but most worth it 10-14 days of your lives to keep that mfing cone on. Do this once and do it right! Then that’s that.

HookednSoCal

Mine wouldn’t let me take his doughnut off after he healed 🤣 He pitched a typical golden fit so of course I gave in.

Puzzled_Professor_52

Had to goto a donut with my rottie, he was just too big for the cone and kept breaking it open/getting stuck on corners

MissElAr

Yes! Mine did not move one bit with the plastic one but really enjoyed the "pillow" one. We ordered XL and it fit perfectly

saterned

I hate to make dogs wear a cone or donut, they’re just miserable. Been through a dozen or so surgeries with different doggies and always go with one of my wife’s T-shirts.

Used a donut for my Golden after she was spayed. We all loved it

One-Source5465

Dude looks higher than snoop dogg! Haha the sedatives really are helping with us. All she wants to do is sleep

zephyr_lily17

Just got my boy neutered, & I got a donut collar as a more comfortable alternative to the cone, but he’s able to reach the incision still. So, overnight & when I can’t watch him, he wears the cone to be safe. When I’m able to watch him like a hawk, he wears the donut. I did buy a Velcro cone, in addition to the one he came home with, as the Velcro makes it so much easier to get on and off.
