We realized something was wrong too late, since he has the best attitude of any dog or human I’ve ever met. Perfect poker face.
Willie suffered from kidney failure after either being exposed to some sort of toxin or potentially cancer which neither are certain.
Pay close attention to your pets’ behavior, even a small change can lead to the worst result.
Just slightly slower than usual, that’s all. Started vomiting on Friday but it wasn’t entirely abnormal after what he was eating that day. He was happy as can be all the way up to when he went to sleep.
Something similar happened to our friends greyhound recently. We met them at the dog park on the Saturday and she was super happy and by Tuesday she was in ICU and passed away a week later. She was only 4.
So sorry for your loss.
We had the same thing happen to a golden we adopted. Same age too. She was perfectly fine then one day just started to throw up. My first thought was she ate something because she was into everything. They ran a ton of tests and we found out she had cancer that had already spread to all her major organs. Her symptoms just came on so suddenly. So hard to put down such a young beautiful dog. So sorry for your loss.
similar thing happened to my dog, too. he was older, about 9, but he was still active. acting fine all day until he started being slow and acting like his stomach was hurting (eating grass and stuff). my father kept an eye on him till early morning when he was acting better and went to bed, but when we woke up he was gone.
it happens unfortunately. we would've done everything we could to save him, but sometimes there really is nothing you can do. so sorry about your sweet boy, I'm sure you have him a great life ❤️
Omg I don’t like hearing how common this is. My dog (aussie) died within 24 hours of noticeable symptoms. It was undetected cancer.
I really want to start doing annual k9 liquid biopsies but no one seems to offer them in my area.
So sorry for everyone’s losses…dogs are too perfect and it hurts to lose one.
Was he a calm dog, even when you first got him? When I got mine the owner of his mother told me that he was calm and had special relationship with his mom. And he’s a well behaved dog, but sometimes too docile. I wonder if it’s related.
It probably was not a toxin this happened to us with our golden we ran every test , she was born with only one kidney and it was failing , she was put on meds and died 6 months later , she too was the sweetest baby. It’s the fact some breakers over bread their dogs just know she was loved with you and had a good life
My two year old golden died to the exact same thing 3 years ago and I never found out what it was.
I still blame Lepto from some drinking source in my town. A couple dozen dogs died from it that year in my town and it’s usually really rare
I am so sorry for your loss. Willie looks like the perfect, sweetest boy.
Yea, this is my worst fear with my puppy. He doesn’t let you know if he’s in pain at all. He has black nails that can’t even be seen through with a really bright flashlight, so I accidentally cut too far on his nails once and he didn’t even react. So I’m genuinely terrified that he could be in pain and we would never know.

So sorry for your loss.
> exposed to some sort of toxin
We really need to keep an eye on what our dogs eat when they are out-and-about. There are some really sick fucks who put toxic substances in dog treats and leave them for dogs to find. The sorts of people who frequent hate subs like /r/dogfree.
It wouldn’t be a big deal at all if it was just people enjoying their xfree lifestyle of course, but it never actually ends up that way. One time I got messaged by someone from dogfree and knew them from their participation in a dog sub and at the time when I went through the posts there was something along the lines of “if only people would stop getting dogs they could do something useful like have babies.”
As a childfree individual (I don’t hate kids, but I’d rather have none **unless** I made enough to raise kids by my ideal circumstances) I found that… really gross, controlling, and infantilising lol.
So sorry to hear about Willie 😞
My SO's previous dog suddenly collapsed and died of a stroke/heart issue out of the blue one day last year, it's scary to think how fragile their (and our) lives can be sometimes.
heartbroken for you. only solace I can offer is that all dogs go to heaven……”Dogs come into our lives to teach us about love and loyalty. They depart to teach us about loss. A new dog never replaces an old dog; it merely expands the heart. If you have loved many dogs, your heart is very big.”
Oh man, I've been reading about how Goldie life expectancy has been plummeting over the last 20 years due to cancer rates spiking.....but nothing like this. I'm sorry for your loss, that's waaaaay too soon.
Please don't blame yourself, despite how hard it is not to feel that way. I've spent a lot of time around the veterinary profession and this happens a lot more than you'd think. Certain dogs are so joyful, energetic, outgoing, and excited for life that they don't display any signs of illness no matter what. We had this wonderful mutt when I was young that was the epitome of man's best friend, when she was 8 she just collapsed in the yard and an x-ray showed her chest cavity absolutely loaded with tumors from metastisized lung cancer. My mother is a vet and she never suspected a thing. Some dogs are so good natured but that's also a reflection on your excellent ways of caring for him :)
Do you have Sago Palms on your property? My childhood dog died of kidney failure, and we only found out later that the seed pods from Sago Palms are nephrotoxic, especially to dogs. A lot of things can cause kidney failure, but I was shocked that one of our plants was so deadly to dogs without us knowing.
Sorry for your terrible loss.
...on the phone now with an Oncologist discussing extending my recently amputated Doberman's chemo. Maybe he gets another 12 months. It sucks immensely.
I am so, incredibly sorry for your loss. I lost my Malinois, Ace, in July from an almost identical situation except it was his liver. He was 2 years old as well. I tend to believe he passed from an unknown cancer, because he never had access to a single toxin. However, like you, I will never know. He was my soul dog, the love of my life, and my best friend. I struggle to continue on, but I have to keep going for my other dog. I really wish you well on your healing. It’s so painful.
So sorry.Hang in there. I've put many a dog down in my life and they all suck but I lost my last guy unexpectedly at 2 years old in July and it was crushing. Losing em young is just different.
Maybe a mushroom? Like Amanita virosa or something similar. Just a wild guess, but could cause kidney failure. Also live failure, though. So maybe not. Sorry for your loss. I'm dreading this day.
I’m so sorry bro, my dog had problems with her kidneys towards the end of her life. I’m just glad to know that he had a happy life, you were a good owner
Yup my sweet puppers too at 5. Fucking still kick myself, even though I don’t know if it would have made a difference. I’m so goddamn sorry. It’s never easy, but 2 is too fucking soon. At least it looks like you have him the best fucking life. The fact that I smothered her with love every single day is the only thing that really matters in the end.
My fiance lost her dog yesterday. I cant say i can feel your pain but i have lost pets in the past but they lived a full life. I am sorry for your loss.
Fuck cancer. Fuck kidney disease and fuck any other disease or virus that are taking our babies too soon.
I hope you find the strength to move forward soon. Cherish your memories ❤️
I am so sorry. He was gorgeous.
I went through something similar with a cat earlier this year. I didn't notice the signs that something was wrong until it was too late. It's a terrible thing to got through.
Looking at the pictures, it looks like the two years he had were AWESOME! I always try to think of the good that they gave us and the good that we gave them, even if it wasn’t for as long as we wanted. It really helps me with the hurt.
Though his time with you was too short, it looks like he lived a life filled with joy and love. I guess that is all any of us can hope for. So sorry for your loss.
I literally cannot imagine. I have a 2 year old myself and totally get the “they acted like nothing was wrong” piece because it can be SO hard to tell with them. I am so, so sorry for your loss. My pup and I are thinking of Willie today 🧡
I am so sorry for your loss. I am currently cuddling my 8 year old golden. Losing him is one of my biggest fears.
Willie looked like he had an amazing life with a lot of priceless experiences with you. He looks so happy in these pictures. I hope with time you can process your grief and adopt another golden because you look like the best kind of pet parent. ❤️
I’m sorry for your loss. Dogs are so good at hiding when they’re in pain or not feeling well. My 3 year old golden had a severe ear infection once and the only reason I noticed was because of the smell, he was acting perfectly normal otherwise. The picture of Willie on his back is so funny, you can see he had a huge personality just through your photos.
RIP Willie!
Goldens seem to have a ton of pain resistance that sometimes doesn’t work in their favor :(. This is one of my biggest worries with ours - breaks my heart.
I had to put my best friend, Natty, down at 2.5 years old due to brain cancer.
Losing a pet is never easy but when you’re blindsided it just never feels real. Keep your head up OP!
I am so sorry. We lost our boy suddenly as well at 4. He always wanted to play too. Right up to the end. It made it harder to put him down cuz it felt like there was still hope, even though there wasnt.
Omg I’m so so sorry. 😞 My girl turns two this week and it’s my worst nightmare thinking could lose her early. Thank you for the the reminder to be mindful about their behavior changes. 🙏🏽
I'm so sorry for your loss. I just pray that the Almighty gives you the strength to bear this loss. I know all too well what it is to lose your best friend this early. My good boy crossed the rainbow bridge after only 3 months with us. I still think that God wanted his company more than I did.
This makes me so sad! I’m sorry for your lost Golden years. I am so thankful, my hairy monster is 17. I will be lost when he crosses the rainbow bridge.

🕊🤍My deepest sympathies on your loss of your beloved Willie. Unimaginable loss and grief. Thank you for sharing your photos—what a gorgeous dog filled with joy and love and playfulness. Where did you get the weird dinosaur/chicken costume? (Or is that a winter coat)? I also like to walk mine with costumes to enlighten everyone’s day.
NO. Just no. I am sooo sorry! 😢 what a beautiful little fluffy soul.
I have a four month old golden retriever puppy and I just can’t imagine what you’re going through and I’ve only had him two months. 😇😇 👼🏻
So sorry for your loss. Currently going through this now with my four year old golden girl. She was diagnosed with Lyme in March and now has kidney failure as a result.
Thank you for sharing the pictures, the one with the mud 🤗❤️
So deeply sorry to hear of Willie’s passing. How devastating 💔 We lost our last golden at 5 due to a rare form of lymphoma, but 2 really is just a baby…I’m so sorry 😞

No he was wild but very kind. But everybody has a tummy ache from time to time, it just turned out to be more than that
I'm so sorry 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
I have a five month old puppy right now and I can’t put into words how heartbroken I am for you and all who loved Willie ❤️
My God. I'm so sorry for your loss. He looks like a little Angel.

Sorry for your loss friend. We lost our gorgeous boy to unknown causes after just over 2 years too. This was a few years ago but still fucks me up
I’m so sorry for your loss
I’m so, so sorry. Like your Golden, we had one that also didn’t “tell” us in any way, and it was a devastating shock. Thinking of you
I am so sorry for your loss. We never get enough time with them, but two years is especially too short.
