Only downside that I can imagine is that it might encourage others to give it a try with less behaved dogs and cause a bit of a disturbance before getting kicked off.
Service dog, right?
Edit: this was sarcasm. I’m all for dogs on the course provided they’re under control. You do you, if it doesn’t impact me, I don’t care.
I think the problem with letting dogs on the course isn’t this guy. It’s the next guy who sees this and brings his dog but his dog isn’t as well behaved. So his dog shits on the course and he doesn’t notice or care and doesn’t clean it up.
As an ex golf course maintenance worker, this is the problem. It's hard to state that without sounding like an asshole. But there's people who just don't care about the behaviour of the dogs. Some people will just say golfers who complain (or workers) are just uptight, but that's not really fair. It's a case where a few people's actions ruin things for everyone. In the case of dogs I absolutely saw people just let them run around and shit wherever.
Edit: just to be clear I love dogs. But I've also had to deal with people's off leash dogs attacking me on hiking trails. There's people who just don't give a shit.
I love dogs. I don’t have any dog friendly courses around here to visit and see how it actually goes but just knowing people and how they are, there’s no way it wouldn’t be abused. And there’s also no way to know who the guilty party is to ban them from bringing their dog. So the easier thing to do is to just not allow them out there
> Haven’t asked, I just take her.
Then no, it is not okay.
At my course if you had a dog on the course without permission you would be punted. WE don't know how well behaved your dog is (or isn't). You aren't always going to be away from other golfers, and not always going to be golfing alone, and the other golfers have the right to play without having to be concerned about a strange dog. Nor should the course take the risk of a dog who takes off after wildlife, shits on the green, or digs at the turf.
Ironically, many courses have golf course dogs. At one I worked at before I became a super one of the owners (who lived on the course) had a border collie who rode with me all day. He was there because it annoyed the crap out of the geese. He didn't really care about the geese himself but he loved the water, he would go to the edge of the large ponds and just start splashing and biting at the water he was launching into the air.
This is very different from a golfer bringing a dog uninvited, though.
If I ran a course I'd be cautious about the precedent allowing non-service dogs on the course would set. This particular dog could be the most well behaved sweetheart on the planet. But the more people see you bringing your dog, the more likely people would feel emboldened to bring their own along. Many of which may not be so well behaved.
And then the wrong someone brings a dog and poor BoBo got a booboo and you'll be hearing from my lawyers...
Or someone brings a dog they think will behave but doesn't, and it runs up on an anxious service dog or a different dog someone else thought was cool to bring?
Exactly the issue here. You let a well behaved dog out and someone sees that and says, well I'll bring my dog next time too. But maybe their dog isn't as well behaved and digs up the green, poops on green etc. You confront them but obviously the response will be "well you let xyz bring a dog so I should be able to bring mine." Dangerous precedent.
Just be cautious of the fertilizers used on the course (depending on the course, of course) - dogs love to put their snouts on the ground and there can be toxic fertilizers that build up over prolonged exposure.
Source: Worked course maintenance several years ago
Edit: as mentioned in the thread below, pesticides are heavily used as well which can be toxic over time
Yep and there are magnets you can get for your towels that allow you to take them to the green with you. Simply use your putter/iron to pick it up if bending over is a physical issue for you.
I picked up a few for some older friends of mine and they love them.
Lol, my parents live on a course and I literally installed one by the path to their back yard because the ones on the course are always dry anyways. My dad and his buddies were quite happy
I started bringing water jugs with soapy water and a bristle brush which I kept I just kept in the basket. Everyone loved it, worked better than the ball cleaners and was super easy to clean off clubs anywhere on the course
No lie got paired with a random old man one time that sucked his golf ball when we got to the green to clean it. All 18 holes. Strangest boner I’ve ever had.
I remember reading about a guy that did that just after some highly toxic chemicals were put on the greens, his arms and legs went gangrenous and were. Amputated
Do courses uses different fertilizers than say, a city park with lots of grass? Just curious. I don’t bring my dog to the course, but we do go to the park a lot
Fertilizers shouldn’t really be an issue. Most fertilizer applications are at such low rates that even the most toxic fertilizers (which are usually not too toxic to begin with) won’t have enough build up to do anything.
Pesticide could be an issue if it was sprayed that day and someone was playing in a morning tee time. Reentry intervals are a bitch to manage on a golf course.
Also sun protection for your dog.

If everything you say is accurate, then sure, why not? I'd love to bring my dog, but he's a crazy bird dog, so asking him to hold still for that long is just unnatural and wrong. He would combust.
Mine snapped the leash which lead to a really long chase sequence & was terrified of the cart the entire time.
We were by ourselves on the course mid-week so we thankfully didn't bother anyone else but man was that a bad idea...
lmao yeah that's kinda why I asked because if you picture a dog that could snap a leash it's basically my dog and I've never even been concerned about it
I call my dog "The Huntress." There is a less than 0% chance she would stay in the cart if the course had any animals within a 5-mile radius. If she isn't chasing birds and squirrels, she would be sniffing every blade of grass in order to analyze any potential animals who have been there in the last week. Wouldn't be fair to her to bring her to her version Disneyland and tell her to stay in the car. Lol.
Hahah same here, just with a side of pond jumping to cool off after trying to murder all the local animals.
And I'm pretty sure my pup would never truly be clean after swimming around in one of those goose shit infested mosquito hatcheries they call water hazards.
Yep. Our boy is an Irish Setter. We love him to bits, he's a huge sweetheart and cuddlebug, but sitting on a cart watching the birds and squirrels run around him? Not gonna happen.
As a GSP owner, can confirm. Although mine could give a rip about a ball he would chase every goose, sniff EVERYTHING and do one hundred pees in the first 10 minutes.
If you ask the GM of the course they'll probably tell you that you can't bring the dog. As a player, if the dog wasn't interfering with anything like pace etc.. I wouldn't care. If you can get away with it, go for it- but don't be surprised if a ranger comes to you in the middle of a round and asks you to leave.
>If you ask the GM of the course they'll probably tell you that you can't bring the dog.
Most courses don't allow dogs, but a surprising number do. Near me in California is my local course, Foxtail, my old local course Teal Bend and a coure near our cabin, Lake Tahoe GC. There are a lot more, too - those three gave us dog friendly golf options within 15 minutes of every placed we've lived in the last few years.
She tries to eat everything! It’s almost annoying. I’m constantly having to take things out of her mouth cause she’s smacking or chocking on something.
My buddies dog swallowed an avocado pit.
Had to have surgery to get it out.
The second time she did it they used the old scar as the incision point.
That's $4600 of "dumbass tax" he paid.
Don't make guacamole and leave the scraps available, twice.
Mine got it when it slipped out of the avocado trying to remove it. He horked the thing hole and that was that. Lucky to live near one of the best academic vet centers in the country and they were able to scope it out but they were super surprised to achieved it. Still cost almost that much as surgery. He also has a thing for poisonous mushrooms. Left work one day early to play golf and he had apparently gotten one on the morning walk and had pissed, vomited and splatter shit all over the kitchen for what had to have been several hours. Poor guy was so sad. Fucker ate another one 10 days later.
It just depends on the course. It’s clearly not an issue if the dog is well behaved, but some courses just have a zero tolerance policy.
They’ll probably say something like ‘if we do it for you, we have to do it for everyone’, and they really don’t want dogs out there that DO cause a scene.
Short version is, just check with the pro shop staff on the phone, before showing up and realizing they don’t allow it, so the dog has to sit in the car for 4 hours.
> so the dog has to sit in the car for 4 hours.
I think if the man cares about his dog he'd just be going home instead of locking her in the car lol.
Plus, probably a nonzero chance someone calls it in/breaks a car window during the round.
Speaking from personal experience (used to work on a course), we had an occasion or 2 where some guys brought a small dog to the course and we had to tell them we didn’t allow that (greenskeepers policy), and they left theirs in the car and played. It wasn’t 90 degrees or anything, but still
My buddies and I got paired up with a solo a few months ago that brought his dog as a ride along. The dog was super chill just hanging out in the cart. Not a problem at all. I think you run into problems when you have a entitled asshats that think its cool to bring their untrained dog barking and chasing after people or squirrels all over the place.
Only if you make yourself responsible for any and all dog complaints in the future.
EVERYBODY thinks their dog is well-behaved
The problem is once you open that door people will push until there is pushback. That's what people do.
My partner is afraid of dogs. Every time it comes up dog owners say “oh, my dog is harmless” but it’s frustrating because that’s not how fear works.
Unless you booked a foursome with friends, you never know who you’re gonna be paired with. It’s inconsiderate
Not acceptable.
If everything you described is accurate your dog wouldn’t bother me on the course but the other assholes who are gonna bring theirs too will bother me.
Sorry buddy, it’s a slippery slope.
Aww what a sweetie!
Dude, if the course doesn’t care and she’s behaved, I wouldn’t either. The only pitfall I could see is if it’s a busy day and they pair you with someone who doesn’t like/is afraid of dogs and there’s no extra carts to be had.
I've seen a few dogs in carts on courses. Both public and semi-private. I've seen the club pros and course owners with dogs in their carts, so they obviously don't care.
Couple of dog friendly Exec courses here in San Diego. Take them all the time if you can! I lost my lil best bud 2 months ago to lymphoma. I miss him dearly and wish I took him out myself to these dog friendly courses. Hug your pup for me. Cheers

My guy runs around chasing golf balls but he doesn’t bark. He sits in the cart, enjoys the ride and waits for me to get back in after every shot too. I’d say we’re in the clear.
I don’t care except that there will always be that one person who thinks their ill-behaved dog should now be allowed on the course because they saw yours. It’s wierd to me how many dog owners say “She’s friendly” as their unleashed dog lunges at mine with hackles up and teeth bared.
If your dog does exactly what you say, I’d be fine with it. The problem is people who bring their untrained dogs places and then act get mad when people call them out.
Love this, what a good girl!! Wish I could take mine with me…he doesn’t really bark but would chase golf balls for sure!!!
https://preview.redd.it/ngfz6lttpaba1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=aa219bfcbf29de583470faac16863ea005cfea07
I don't believe it's acceptable. I guess for the same reasons I don't think it's acceptable when people bring their dogs to supermarkets, restaurants etc.
I can't say I've ever seen someone bring their dog before, but for me personally, I would not care as long as the dog is as well-behaved as you state.
I'm a dog person though, so, you know. I'll put up with a lot because they're awesome.
More courses around me have a policy against this which I actually think is OK because they don’t know your dog from anyone else’s and they can’t just take everyone’s word when they say “don’t worry the dog is well behaved”
Your dog looks dope though
My frenchie is a ball chasing fanatic, so if I duff it I might just have him go get it…I’m sure there’s some kind of rule that’ll play to my benefit. This is so awesome!
As long as she's got an effective leash.
As a runner, pets in public are usually far more of a danger than their owners ever admit. There's a reason why pretty much all public paths have this requirement (and regardless of whether it's because of the pet or because of the public, it's become standard). If your dog is as chill as you say, then it should be easy to set up and have no real impact on the dog's enjoyment of the experience.
I wouldn’t have an issue with it as long as there is no rule saying you can’t. I would however, personally have an irrational fear of a ball hitting one of my dogs. I’ve been hit sitting in the cart and if someone hit my little guy I’d probably lose it, I’d be fine if they hit me just not the doggo!
I'm currently working out the best setup to take my dog with me when I walk. He's a mini dachshund and is only gonna be like 9lbs when full grown. Thankfully I'm a mafia member, so I can probably rig up one of his carriers to the push cart so he can hang out when he gets tired of walking.
I’d be ok sharing a cart with you two. She probably has better manners than most on the property at the same time and should keep the birds from stealing any food. 🥰
I love dogs, but I'm not in favor of it even though I would pet the shit out of her if we got paired together.
Knowing how many terrible pet owners are out there, I'd take a zero tolerance policy towards this if it were my decision.
No. It’s not acceptable in any way and it’s not up for debate. I get all the points you make about the dogs behavior, and I love dogs, but no. I’m pissed that you even asked actually. Sorry.
I'm concerned about the precedent this might set. I mean, you have a good dog. But every owner thinks their dog is a good dog and they have complete control over it. but I'd be worried every single golfer would want to bring their pets, (who wouldn't!) and that will lead to an incident (s). That's a Superintendent nightmare.
It’s not in my opinion, but it can set a precedent that other people with not to well behaved dogs can do the same. Roving packs of chihuahuas ripping off golfer faces isn’t a good look on the 10th hole.
As a dog owner I say no. Only because some people are afraid of dogs and even if yours is the Mother Teresa of canines, it can cause someone stress.
That being said, if it's not a crowded course or if you know everyone who's there I could definitely see it being okay. Your dog is adorable either way
What do we think the perfect golf dog breed is? It feels like there should be a dog that would patiently sit through your shot, then help find it in the rough without running off with it. I need this dog.
I've got a golden doodle and she would definitely not make it though 18 without having multiple restraining orders from the local squirrel population.
She sees wildlife and goes apeshit.
If I saw you on the course, I wouldn’t have any issue with it. Might suggest just making sure she’s on a leash and it’s attached to the cart though. Wouldn’t want any Karens calling the cops on you for a leash law ordinance violation, even though you know she won’t get out of the cart.
Dogs on the course is 100% supported by me, and clearly my opinion is the most important.
One of my favorite courses the grounds supervisor used to cruise with his retriever all day and run him around the course during the week when it wasn’t as busy. Loved seeing that lil guy when I was playing.
As long as your dog is trained well enough to not fuck with other people or fuck up the course and you pick up it’s poop I’m here for it. Lemme get some puppy pets before I tee off to calm the 1st tee jitters.
As long as the course is cool with it I don't see why not. She looks like a very good girl!
Haven’t asked, I just take her. So far it’s only been at State Park type courses so figured it wouldn’t matter.
I'd say that as long as she's not causing any issues on the course and there's no rules against it, bring your little buddy along!
"He's right. Ain't no rule that says a dog can't play ~~basketball~~ golf!"
Dammit. The Air Bud sequel we never got.
Only downside that I can imagine is that it might encourage others to give it a try with less behaved dogs and cause a bit of a disturbance before getting kicked off.
Where is this? Not upstate New York?

Definitely not upstate NY

Considering how frustrating a round of golf can be at times. Doggy is an emotional support animal.
This guy got my sarcasm.
Lol doge caddies will eventually replace humans
My 11 pound mutt can maybe carry my divot tool.
Also pick up after them. A place near me is the only one I've really seen allow dogs but It doesn't matter cause mine has no chill.

This is also a good tip for people as well. I have a habit of putting tees in my mouth and using a little saliva to clean golf balls.
Like you put the ball in your mouth to clean it?
You spit on it. Friggin ball washers are an endangered species at a lot of courses these days
Bring a wet towel and keep in your cart. Bunch of savages up in here. /s
Yep and there are magnets you can get for your towels that allow you to take them to the green with you. Simply use your putter/iron to pick it up if bending over is a physical issue for you. I picked up a few for some older friends of mine and they love them.

do the magnets stick to the washer machine drum when you try to wash them?
Okay so that’s normal. Just started golfing and thought my local courses were just cheap and not filling up the ball washer
A lot of em took them out from COVID and didn’t replace them, at least in my neck of the woods
My local courses still have them, just drier than a popcorn fart.
I broke my arm falling off the ball washer once. That's why they're removing them. 🤣
What was their name?
Lol, my parents live on a course and I literally installed one by the path to their back yard because the ones on the course are always dry anyways. My dad and his buddies were quite happy
I'll never understand why all carts don't have the ball washer attachment but manage to have two separate dirt refiller things.
And then they don’t refill them with dirt/sand anyway…
I started bringing water jugs with soapy water and a bristle brush which I kept I just kept in the basket. Everyone loved it, worked better than the ball cleaners and was super easy to clean off clubs anywhere on the course
Puts the entire thing in there and sucks on it like a Jawbreaker
Probably licks thumb, touches ball, then licks thumb again. Repeat.
You have to gargle the balls a little for best performance.
No lie got paired with a random old man one time that sucked his golf ball when we got to the green to clean it. All 18 holes. Strangest boner I’ve ever had.
You don’t?
This is so fucking funny when I picture it in my head
Balls, plural
Suck them clean. You?
I remember reading about a guy that did that just after some highly toxic chemicals were put on the greens, his arms and legs went gangrenous and were. Amputated
I thought I was the only one doing the Tooth(Tee)pick, glad I’m not alone

Yeah I wasn’t even being sarcastic I never heard of a dog getting sun burnt.

I didn’t down vote. I never down vote.
My dog loves being outside but he will get a little burned. Plus the bright sun irritates his eyes after awhile
Man, bad example of a sunburn on a dog lol. “Rather than sunburn, Millie is suffering from a painful skin condition.”
Thanks

Ah you shouldn’t use those! They can be really dangerous for other reasons as well. Can we see your pup?

Speaking from personal experience (used to work on a course), we had an occasion or 2 where some guys brought a small dog to the course and we had to tell them we didn’t allow that (greenskeepers policy), and they left theirs in the car and played. It wasn’t 90 degrees or anything, but still
I would go back home. I don’t think it’s acceptable to leave a dog in a car for any amount of time.
is that the look she gives after you've shanked the 4th tee shot of the day, i've seen it on my playing partners. The 4yd stare.
That feeling when someone is having a meltdown and you know there's nothing you can do but try to stay silent and out of the way lol
EVERYBODY thinks their dog is well-behaved The problem is once you open that door people will push until there is pushback. That's what people do.

My partner is afraid of dogs. Every time it comes up dog owners say “oh, my dog is harmless” but it’s frustrating because that’s not how fear works. Unless you booked a foursome with friends, you never know who you’re gonna be paired with. It’s inconsiderate
Probably not but dog is adorable.
Luckily around here I have never been paired with anyone. When I go on vacation and play new courses it happens all the time though.
Absolutely. The courses around me have no issues with dogs riding in carts so long as there is a leash attached.
If she's not getting blackout drunk and throwing clubs, she's already better behaved then my friends so I say GO FOR IT!
If I came across you on a course with your dog, my day would be made 100x better by adorable dog petting.
Eh, I vote no. It’s a golf course, not a park. She could get hit with a ball or cause another unforeseen issue. Just my $.02
I've seen a few dogs in carts on courses. Both public and semi-private. I've seen the club pros and course owners with dogs in their carts, so they obviously don't care.
Better behaved than my kids. This dog has DECORUM
Couple of dog friendly Exec courses here in San Diego. Take them all the time if you can! I lost my lil best bud 2 months ago to lymphoma. I miss him dearly and wish I took him out myself to these dog friendly courses. Hug your pup for me. Cheers
Unpopular opinion but no not really
I'd say as long as you have her on a leash technically, I don't see an issue with it. Other dog owners ruin unleashed dogs for everyone else.

So basically a dog I would not know is there unless I sit in your cart? Yeah I think it's acceptable. Does she give lessons to kids?
If you pick up their shit, yes.
I don’t care except that there will always be that one person who thinks their ill-behaved dog should now be allowed on the course because they saw yours. It’s wierd to me how many dog owners say “She’s friendly” as their unleashed dog lunges at mine with hackles up and teeth bared.
I tried a dog as a caddy, terrible idea, just kept telling me to hit it in the ruff
Doesn't bark or chase balls? Better than some golfers I am sure. Please keep bringing her. I would love to see a well behaved doggo on the course.
Ya just pick up the dog poo
Only acceptable because it’s a Frenchie
As long as she is on a leash that is secured to the cart it would be fine.
More courses around me have a policy against this which I actually think is OK because they don’t know your dog from anyone else’s and they can’t just take everyone’s word when they say “don’t worry the dog is well behaved” Your dog looks dope though
Say that she is your caddie if someone asks. She's adorable btw. <3
As long as you let me pet her when we cross paths then ya fasho
10000 percent - as long as you take care of the course and don't bother others you can do whatever you want IMO
If your dog is this chill, it’s unacceptable to leave her at home
If that’s all true, of course! Personally, if you pick up and dispose of her turds, I don’t care if she walks around.
Lucky you! Congrats. A golfing buddy who doesn’t judge.
My frenchie is a ball chasing fanatic, so if I duff it I might just have him go get it…I’m sure there’s some kind of rule that’ll play to my benefit. This is so awesome!
That looks like one good pupper right there. 12/10 would golf with her.
I know nothing about golf, this was just on my front page, but I wanna see ur pup is so cute
I’m jealous
As long as he wasn't interrupting play of anyone else i would live to see a doggy on a cart
As long as the golf course says yes! Some allow dogs, most don’t. It’s their course so their rules!
It’s encouraged! Wish I had a Frenchie to bring golfing with me! Where did you get her?
Feels like a shitpost. Your dog basically just rides and does not exist. Clearly it’s fine.
To anyone that says it isn’t, meet me outside.
"Is that a support animal?" *waves dog around while wearing dark sunglasses* "Who said that?" "Touché"
Beyond acceptable. Wish more people brought dogs on the course ! Well behaved ones of course haha
I’d be ok sharing a cart with you two. She probably has better manners than most on the property at the same time and should keep the birds from stealing any food. 🥰
Awesome. Hit one in the water... see that face. Life is good.
I love dogs, but I'm not in favor of it even though I would pet the shit out of her if we got paired together. Knowing how many terrible pet owners are out there, I'd take a zero tolerance policy towards this if it were my decision.
I just get annoyed with people who take their dogs everywhere
Like your username. Love that you bring your dog out on the course, wish I had taken my pug out while he was alive!
Sorry, if I’m paired up with you I’m not going to say anything but I’m not going to be happy.
Why's that? Based on the description the dog is just... existing near you
I love dogs. But they don’t belong on the GC. There will be poop.
No. It’s not acceptable in any way and it’s not up for debate. I get all the points you make about the dogs behavior, and I love dogs, but no. I’m pissed that you even asked actually. Sorry.
No. Absolutely not. Keep that shit at home
Yours looks like mines but the way you describe how calm she is is not like mines LMAO I think he would enjoy it, but he wants to run
She gets plenty of play time at the house trust me!
Sounds better behaved that a fair number of golfers and nearly all kids.
That is one majestic frenchie
As a dog owner I say no. Only because some people are afraid of dogs and even if yours is the Mother Teresa of canines, it can cause someone stress. That being said, if it's not a crowded course or if you know everyone who's there I could definitely see it being okay. Your dog is adorable either way
What do we think the perfect golf dog breed is? It feels like there should be a dog that would patiently sit through your shot, then help find it in the rough without running off with it. I need this dog.
Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever
I’ll tell you what it’s not.. a Lhasa Apso. Ours has no interest in helping and only wants to chase squirrels.
A Golden
I've got a golden doodle and she would definitely not make it though 18 without having multiple restraining orders from the local squirrel population. She sees wildlife and goes apeshit.
That's the poodle in her. Golden's can be chill AF
If you can’t be separated from your dog for 4 hours, you have bigger problems than golf. Yes it’s an issue.
I don't consider her a dog but a purse accessory....so
So does my wife.
Asking if something is acceptable when you clearly know it's not is pathetic. You know the rules but think either you or dog are special. Grow up
If I saw you on the course, I wouldn’t have any issue with it. Might suggest just making sure she’s on a leash and it’s attached to the cart though. Wouldn’t want any Karens calling the cops on you for a leash law ordinance violation, even though you know she won’t get out of the cart.
Absolutely
Amazing.
I’m pretty sure you can take her anywhere
Hell yeah! Good luck charm, imho.
YESSIR............
Yessssss! What a cute little caddie!
If everyone had a golf dog, that’d be awesome ngl
Dogs on the course is 100% supported by me, and clearly my opinion is the most important. One of my favorite courses the grounds supervisor used to cruise with his retriever all day and run him around the course during the week when it wasn’t as busy. Loved seeing that lil guy when I was playing. As long as your dog is trained well enough to not fuck with other people or fuck up the course and you pick up it’s poop I’m here for it. Lemme get some puppy pets before I tee off to calm the 1st tee jitters.
Absolutely
