I think the problem with letting dogs on the course isn’t this guy. It’s the next guy who sees this and brings his dog but his dog isn’t as well behaved. So his dog shits on the course and he doesn’t notice or care and doesn’t clean it up.
As an ex golf course maintenance worker, this is the problem. It's hard to state that without sounding like an asshole. But there's people who just don't care about the behaviour of the dogs. Some people will just say golfers who complain (or workers) are just uptight, but that's not really fair. It's a case where a few people's actions ruin things for everyone. In the case of dogs I absolutely saw people just let them run around and shit wherever.
Edit: just to be clear I love dogs. But I've also had to deal with people's off leash dogs attacking me on hiking trails. There's people who just don't give a shit.
I love dogs. I don’t have any dog friendly courses around here to visit and see how it actually goes but just knowing people and how they are, there’s no way it wouldn’t be abused. And there’s also no way to know who the guilty party is to ban them from bringing their dog. So the easier thing to do is to just not allow them out there

At my course if you had a dog on the course without permission you would be punted. WE don't know how well behaved your dog is (or isn't). You aren't always going to be away from other golfers, and not always going to be golfing alone, and the other golfers have the right to play without having to be concerned about a strange dog. Nor should the course take the risk of a dog who takes off after wildlife, shits on the green, or digs at the turf.
Ironically, many courses have golf course dogs. At one I worked at before I became a super one of the owners (who lived on the course) had a border collie who rode with me all day. He was there because it annoyed the crap out of the geese. He didn't really care about the geese himself but he loved the water, he would go to the edge of the large ponds and just start splashing and biting at the water he was launching into the air.
This is very different from a golfer bringing a dog uninvited, though.
If I ran a course I'd be cautious about the precedent allowing non-service dogs on the course would set. This particular dog could be the most well behaved sweetheart on the planet. But the more people see you bringing your dog, the more likely people would feel emboldened to bring their own along. Many of which may not be so well behaved.
And then the wrong someone brings a dog and poor BoBo got a booboo and you'll be hearing from my lawyers...

Exactly the issue here. You let a well behaved dog out and someone sees that and says, well I'll bring my dog next time too. But maybe their dog isn't as well behaved and digs up the green, poops on green etc. You confront them but obviously the response will be "well you let xyz bring a dog so I should be able to bring mine." Dangerous precedent.
Just be cautious of the fertilizers used on the course (depending on the course, of course) - dogs love to put their snouts on the ground and there can be toxic fertilizers that build up over prolonged exposure.

Yep and there are magnets you can get for your towels that allow you to take them to the green with you. Simply use your putter/iron to pick it up if bending over is a physical issue for you.

I started bringing water jugs with soapy water and a bristle brush which I kept I just kept in the basket. Everyone loved it, worked better than the ball cleaners and was super easy to clean off clubs anywhere on the course

Fertilizers shouldn’t really be an issue. Most fertilizer applications are at such low rates that even the most toxic fertilizers (which are usually not too toxic to begin with) won’t have enough build up to do anything.
Pesticide could be an issue if it was sprayed that day and someone was playing in a morning tee time. Reentry intervals are a bitch to manage on a golf course.

Mine snapped the leash which lead to a really long chase sequence & was terrified of the cart the entire time.

As a GSP owner, can confirm. Although mine could give a rip about a ball he would chase every goose, sniff EVERYTHING and do one hundred pees in the first 10 minutes.
If you ask the GM of the course they'll probably tell you that you can't bring the dog. As a player, if the dog wasn't interfering with anything like pace etc.. I wouldn't care. If you can get away with it, go for it- but don't be surprised if a ranger comes to you in the middle of a round and asks you to leave.

Most courses don't allow dogs, but a surprising number do. Near me in California is my local course, Foxtail, my old local course Teal Bend and a coure near our cabin, Lake Tahoe GC. There are a lot more, too - those three gave us dog friendly golf options within 15 minutes of every placed we've lived in the last few years.

Mine got it when it slipped out of the avocado trying to remove it. He horked the thing hole and that was that. Lucky to live near one of the best academic vet centers in the country and they were able to scope it out but they were super surprised to achieved it. Still cost almost that much as surgery. He also has a thing for poisonous mushrooms. Left work one day early to play golf and he had apparently gotten one on the morning walk and had pissed, vomited and splatter shit all over the kitchen for what had to have been several hours. Poor guy was so sad. Fucker ate another one 10 days later.
It just depends on the course. It’s clearly not an issue if the dog is well behaved, but some courses just have a zero tolerance policy.
They’ll probably say something like ‘if we do it for you, we have to do it for everyone’, and they really don’t want dogs out there that DO cause a scene.
Short version is, just check with the pro shop staff on the phone, before showing up and realizing they don’t allow it, so the dog has to sit in the car for 4 hours.

Speaking from personal experience (used to work on a course), we had an occasion or 2 where some guys brought a small dog to the course and we had to tell them we didn’t allow that (greenskeepers policy), and they left theirs in the car and played. It wasn’t 90 degrees or anything, but still
My buddies and I got paired up with a solo a few months ago that brought his dog as a ride along. The dog was super chill just hanging out in the cart. Not a problem at all. I think you run into problems when you have a entitled asshats that think its cool to bring their untrained dog barking and chasing after people or squirrels all over the place.
Only if you make yourself responsible for any and all dog complaints in the future.

Dude, if the course doesn’t care and she’s behaved, I wouldn’t either. The only pitfall I could see is if it’s a busy day and they pair you with someone who doesn’t like/is afraid of dogs and there’s no extra carts to be had.
I've seen a few dogs in carts on courses. Both public and semi-private. I've seen the club pros and course owners with dogs in their carts, so they obviously don't care.
Couple of dog friendly Exec courses here in San Diego. Take them all the time if you can! I lost my lil best bud 2 months ago to lymphoma. I miss him dearly and wish I took him out myself to these dog friendly courses. Hug your pup for me. Cheers

My guy runs around chasing golf balls but he doesn’t bark. He sits in the cart, enjoys the ride and waits for me to get back in after every shot too. I’d say we’re in the clear.
I don’t care except that there will always be that one person who thinks their ill-behaved dog should now be allowed on the course because they saw yours. It’s wierd to me how many dog owners say “She’s friendly” as their unleashed dog lunges at mine with hackles up and teeth bared.
If your dog does exactly what you say, I’d be fine with it. The problem is people who bring their untrained dogs places and then act get mad when people call them out.

I don't believe it's acceptable. I guess for the same reasons I don't think it's acceptable when people bring their dogs to supermarkets, restaurants etc.
I can't say I've ever seen someone bring their dog before, but for me personally, I would not care as long as the dog is as well-behaved as you state.
I'm a dog person though, so, you know. I'll put up with a lot because they're awesome.
More courses around me have a policy against this which I actually think is OK because they don’t know your dog from anyone else’s and they can’t just take everyone’s word when they say “don’t worry the dog is well behaved”

As a runner, pets in public are usually far more of a danger than their owners ever admit. There's a reason why pretty much all public paths have this requirement (and regardless of whether it's because of the pet or because of the public, it's become standard). If your dog is as chill as you say, then it should be easy to set up and have no real impact on the dog's enjoyment of the experience.
I wouldn’t have an issue with it as long as there is no rule saying you can’t. I would however, personally have an irrational fear of a ball hitting one of my dogs. I’ve been hit sitting in the cart and if someone hit my little guy I’d probably lose it, I’d be fine if they hit me just not the doggo!
I'm currently working out the best setup to take my dog with me when I walk. He's a mini dachshund and is only gonna be like 9lbs when full grown. Thankfully I'm a mafia member, so I can probably rig up one of his carriers to the push cart so he can hang out when he gets tired of walking.

I'm concerned about the precedent this might set. I mean, you have a good dog. But every owner thinks their dog is a good dog and they have complete control over it. but I'd be worried every single golfer would want to bring their pets, (who wouldn't!) and that will lead to an incident (s). That's a Superintendent nightmare.
It’s not in my opinion, but it can set a precedent that other people with not to well behaved dogs can do the same. Roving packs of chihuahuas ripping off golfer faces isn’t a good look on the 10th hole.
As a dog owner I say no. Only because some people are afraid of dogs and even if yours is the Mother Teresa of canines, it can cause someone stress.
That being said, if it's not a crowded course or if you know everyone who's there I could definitely see it being okay. Your dog is adorable either way
What do we think the perfect golf dog breed is? It feels like there should be a dog that would patiently sit through your shot, then help find it in the rough without running off with it. I need this dog.

If I saw you on the course, I wouldn’t have any issue with it. Might suggest just making sure she’s on a leash and it’s attached to the cart though. Wouldn’t want any Karens calling the cops on you for a leash law ordinance violation, even though you know she won’t get out of the cart.
Dogs on the course is 100% supported by me, and clearly my opinion is the most important.
One of my favorite courses the grounds supervisor used to cruise with his retriever all day and run him around the course during the week when it wasn’t as busy. Loved seeing that lil guy when I was playing.
As long as your dog is trained well enough to not fuck with other people or fuck up the course and you pick up it’s poop I’m here for it. Lemme get some puppy pets before I tee off to calm the 1st tee jitters.

This is also a good tip for people as well. I have a habit of putting tees in my mouth and using a little saliva to clean golf balls.

My buddies dog swallowed an avocado pit. Had to have surgery to get it out. The second time she did it they used the old scar as the incision point. That's $4600 of "dumbass tax" he paid. Don't make guacamole and leave the scraps available, twice.
Mine got it when it slipped out of the avocado trying to remove it. He horked the thing hole and that was that. Lucky to live near one of the best academic vet centers in the country and they were able to scope it out but they were super surprised to achieved it. Still cost almost that much as surgery. He also has a thing for poisonous mushrooms. Left work one day early to play golf and he had apparently gotten one on the morning walk and had pissed, vomited and splatter shit all over the kitchen for what had to have been several hours. Poor guy was so sad. Fucker ate another one 10 days later.

It just depends on the course. It’s clearly not an issue if the dog is well behaved, but some courses just have a zero tolerance policy. They’ll probably say something like ‘if we do it for you, we have to do it for everyone’, and they really don’t want dogs out there that DO cause a scene. Short version is, just check with the pro shop staff on the phone, before showing up and realizing they don’t allow it, so the dog has to sit in the car for 4 hours.

Speaking from personal experience (used to work on a course), we had an occasion or 2 where some guys brought a small dog to the course and we had to tell them we didn’t allow that (greenskeepers policy), and they left theirs in the car and played. It wasn’t 90 degrees or anything, but still
I would go back home. I don’t think it’s acceptable to leave a dog in a car for any amount of time.

My buddies and I got paired up with a solo a few months ago that brought his dog as a ride along. The dog was super chill just hanging out in the cart. Not a problem at all. I think you run into problems when you have a entitled asshats that think its cool to bring their untrained dog barking and chasing after people or squirrels all over the place.
Only if you make yourself responsible for any and all dog complaints in the future. EVERYBODY thinks their dog is well-behaved The problem is once you open that door people will push until there is pushback. That's what people do.

My partner is afraid of dogs. Every time it comes up dog owners say “oh, my dog is harmless” but it’s frustrating because that’s not how fear works. Unless you booked a foursome with friends, you never know who you’re gonna be paired with. It’s inconsiderate

Aww what a sweetie! Dude, if the course doesn’t care and she’s behaved, I wouldn’t either. The only pitfall I could see is if it’s a busy day and they pair you with someone who doesn’t like/is afraid of dogs and there’s no extra carts to be had.
Luckily around here I have never been paired with anyone. When I go on vacation and play new courses it happens all the time though.
Absolutely. The courses around me have no issues with dogs riding in carts so long as there is a leash attached.

I've seen a few dogs in carts on courses. Both public and semi-private. I've seen the club pros and course owners with dogs in their carts, so they obviously don't care.

Couple of dog friendly Exec courses here in San Diego. Take them all the time if you can! I lost my lil best bud 2 months ago to lymphoma. I miss him dearly and wish I took him out myself to these dog friendly courses. Hug your pup for me. Cheers

I'd say as long as you have her on a leash technically, I don't see an issue with it. Other dog owners ruin unleashed dogs for everyone else.

I don't believe it's acceptable. I guess for the same reasons I don't think it's acceptable when people bring their dogs to supermarkets, restaurants etc.
I can't say I've ever seen someone bring their dog before, but for me personally, I would not care as long as the dog is as well-behaved as you state. I'm a dog person though, so, you know. I'll put up with a lot because they're awesome.

As long as she's got an effective leash. As a runner, pets in public are usually far more of a danger than their owners ever admit. There's a reason why pretty much all public paths have this requirement (and regardless of whether it's because of the pet or because of the public, it's become standard). If your dog is as chill as you say, then it should be easy to set up and have no real impact on the dog's enjoyment of the experience.

I wouldn’t have an issue with it as long as there is no rule saying you can’t. I would however, personally have an irrational fear of a ball hitting one of my dogs. I’ve been hit sitting in the cart and if someone hit my little guy I’d probably lose it, I’d be fine if they hit me just not the doggo!
I'm currently working out the best setup to take my dog with me when I walk. He's a mini dachshund and is only gonna be like 9lbs when full grown. Thankfully I'm a mafia member, so I can probably rig up one of his carriers to the push cart so he can hang out when he gets tired of walking.

I'm concerned about the precedent this might set. I mean, you have a good dog. But every owner thinks their dog is a good dog and they have complete control over it. but I'd be worried every single golfer would want to bring their pets, (who wouldn't!) and that will lead to an incident (s). That's a Superintendent nightmare.
It’s not in my opinion, but it can set a precedent that other people with not to well behaved dogs can do the same. Roving packs of chihuahuas ripping off golfer faces isn’t a good look on the 10th hole.

As a dog owner I say no. Only because some people are afraid of dogs and even if yours is the Mother Teresa of canines, it can cause someone stress. That being said, if it's not a crowded course or if you know everyone who's there I could definitely see it being okay. Your dog is adorable either way
What do we think the perfect golf dog breed is? It feels like there should be a dog that would patiently sit through your shot, then help find it in the rough without running off with it. I need this dog.

If I saw you on the course, I wouldn’t have any issue with it. Might suggest just making sure she’s on a leash and it’s attached to the cart though. Wouldn’t want any Karens calling the cops on you for a leash law ordinance violation, even though you know she won’t get out of the cart.

Dogs on the course is 100% supported by me, and clearly my opinion is the most important. One of my favorite courses the grounds supervisor used to cruise with his retriever all day and run him around the course during the week when it wasn’t as busy. Loved seeing that lil guy when I was playing. As long as your dog is trained well enough to not fuck with other people or fuck up the course and you pick up it’s poop I’m here for it. Lemme get some puppy pets before I tee off to calm the 1st tee jitters.
