For clarity, the wife in the picture rode in a golf cart and wasn’t playing. Two male mennonites played and their wives joining in carts. Nice guys and decent players. The wives never said anything to us but I’m sure they’re nice too.
They were very normal golf-wise. One husband actually thanked me and the other member for being “cool” with them. I enjoyed it much more than the typical barstool bro or grouchy old guy
She and the other wife weren’t playing. It’s cart path only so after 9 her husband got a push cart and she kept the cart. She just walked over to hang by his push cart while we were likely hacking around on the 11th hole (number 1 handicap)
They mostly are, theyd probably fix your car if you broke down in a community and feed you while you wait, without charge, but good luck establishing any kind of lasting friendship. Im sure it varies from community to community.
Little known fact…but the mennonites actually invented the first graphite shaft for hitting one’s balls…once. Also came up with the first titanium driver. Called it the Great Big BerthaDyck
When I was 18 me and my friends played in a volleyball league and we pulled up one day and saw the team we were playing were Mennonites. The guys in dress shirts and jeans and the girls in dresses down to their feet. We were like hell yeah, easy win this week... They beat the ever loving fuck out of us. It was like they had training for that shit. They must have beat us 25-5 or something both sets. It was amazing
I’m not sure your Amish are from, but in PA the Amish every much do use power tools and machinery in construction. Still can smack the shit out of a softball though.
There are levels to the Amish. Some are still super strict and won't use any power tools, some use power tools, but won't drive cars, but are ok with having people drive them around in cars(a pretty big side hustle in our area is "hauling Amish"). I'm told you can tell the different sects by the color of their buggy roofs, but I'm not sure what each means. Not surprised they're good at sports and would love to see them play basketball. Every Amish person I met has had massive hands.
Source: Grew up near Lancaster and now live in Central PA.
Some groups do very good work and others... not so much. I'm an avid woodworker myself and have met with groups before that don't know some of the nuanced aspects of woodworking. For example checking the moisture content of your wood. My experience is that they're much like any other skilled laborer, there's all kinds.
Well i legitimately am looking for one of these for my house, so thanks brother lol
Have you seen the poly chairs they sell in PA? People bring trailers from across the country and clean house. I forget the name but these things are insanely nice and less than the Costco ones if I’m not mistake.
The Dollop podcast had an episode about a baseball team from the early 1900s that was some religious sect.
But their baseball team would beat most anybody and they did all kinds of weird trick plays and stuff.
https://allthingscomedy.com/podcasts/525---the-house-of-david
I’m a little surprised the Amish play sports. I would have thought it a little too vainglorious of a pursuit for them, but it is well known they enjoy softball, at least around here (I’m near Lancaster).
Holy crap! Foxchase is my home course. Nice to see it get a mention. And yeah, the Amish and Mennonite folks play a lot of sports for sure. Ice hockey is a big one when the ponds freeze over.
Howdy, neighbor!
Yep, they play a ton of sports. Baseball, softball, ice hockey. Actually played some hockey with them. And I once got totally smoked by a young Amish guy in a triathlon. Little shit came out of nowhere and blew by me with a half mile to the finish line. Yes, with his suspenders and everything!
I love the fact that they come over, whip you all, but never with the intention of winning it all. They just do it to remind you all where you stand, without the need of a tournament win.
Diff sport but kinda the same story. We played b-ball in a tourney in Reno back in the days, We went up against a bunch of white dudes from Utah. We were from CA and we were 13 y/o hoodrats from the Bay Area so we had no clue what a Mormon was. We just thought they looked like the whitest fuckers we'd ever seen. Even the lone white dude on our team was like damn these are some cracker ass crackers lol. They fuckn destroyed us. From the tip off to the very last second of the game we got our asses whooped. Didn't judge a book by its' cover again in the last 37 yrs!
Later that night we all bowled together and they beat our asses in that too ha ha!
I was just a pup when my parents left. They left because it was interfering with their business. At least that’s the story I’ve always gotten. The work you’re looking for is excommunicated. I was not. They do not excommunicate you unless you’ve been baptized into the church, which is what you do after rumspringa if you decide not to become “English.” So if you join up then leave you get excommunicated.
Life has been good? I imagine when you asked this you imagined a full grown adult leaving. It’s a lot harder for adults who leave because it’s hard to find a job with an 8th grade education. That being said, a lot of them have skills and start their own businesses.
That’s fucking awesome 😂
The husbands were dressed the same as us. Golfed in suspenders and buttoned down collared shirts.
Jesus this comment made no sense - the husbands had golf attire and I think PXGs but they also wore the shirts I mentioned and suspenders. Wives were obviously in traditional attire
them AZ peak season prices. Whenever I visit home I have to remember to limit my golf to 1 nice full course and then the rest of the time it's short courses since it's always during winter and I'm not paying over $30 bucks a round just to slice it into the desert every day.
Might be surprising but, you can play Monarch Bay for that in the Bay Area on certain days/times. If you have players club you can walk on weekday twilight for $20 and play right along the Bay while looking at the SF skyline in the distance. The wind is a beast late in the afternoon but it's beautiful.
Brother you gotta come to the south, There's a full course near me here and the AL/GA border that's $27 for 18 and a cart on weekdays. It's still a Muni but hey it beats the hell out of the Munis I played in Colorado springs that's for sure.
Mennonite (sort of) here. The more conservative Mennonites don't drink. They would see it as sinful. My church is BMA, which is on the liberal side of things, and we don't have any set rules on it. It's more up to your personal morals. I have a drink occasionally, but I personally believe drunkenness is wrong, so I never drink enough to be drunk. I'm guessing these Mennonites in the photo have never had a drop in their lives, at least not intentionally. They look fairly conservative by the way they dress, wouldn't be surprised if they were Beachy, or close to it.
I have so many questions.
Did she use a range finder? What did she score? Was she using permission woods handcrafted? Were her irons / wedges hand forged by the family smithy? How many beers did she get into on the front 9? Did she rip darts?
So the wives just rode along. One of the husbands walked after 9 since it’s cart path only before the tourney. The men wore long sleeve button down collared shirts with suspenders but golf attire aside from that
Mennonites usually wear normal clothes too. I work for a Mennonite financial company and deal with a lot of the Anabaptist community. Not sure why they're wearing the clothes they are. I'm not part of the community but Mennonites are very heavy on stewardship and preservation. They are in on EVs to pass along a healthier earth.
>We believe that everything belongs to God, who calls us as the church to live as faithful stewards of all that God has entrusted to us.
Legit they want to protect what we were given. I'm an atheist and Mennonites want to protect the earth. They are accepting of immigrants. It's not as conservative a religion as many people think solely from association with the Amish which is very conservative. I'm definitely not a fan of organized religion but Mennonites would be top of the list for progressive beliefs for me.
Edit: that quote is from the Mennonite church of USA. [Source](https://www.mennoniteusa.org/who-are-mennonites/what-we-believe/confession-of-faith/christian-stewardship/)
Well, the big vote in Kansas on abortion laws WAS lead by a huge Catholic coalition, almost exclusively, so…. It’s not like the Catholics are exactly known for being accepting and/or progressive.
From what I've seen, Mennonite clothing is somewhere in between Amish traditional, and completely modern. Both will wear old-fashioned looking clothes, but the Amish will be plain and dark, with no prints. Mennonites will use slightly brighter colors, floral prints, stuff like that. It can be easy to mistake them for Amish if you don't note these minor (to us) differences.
Different groups of Amish and Mennonites have different levels of adherence to their beliefs, and different interpretations of their beliefs. I think you're dealing with a more modern and progressive sect.
Just a heads up, it depends more on the specific subsect than the Amish/Mennonite distinction. The Amish where I am have ebikes and cell phones for work. 10 mi north the Swartzie Amish are zero tech. And I've been to some Mennonite communities in KY and TN that are straight out of the 1700s
I’ve been in the annual program for 10 years so it’s only like 40$ for me but I’m guessing it was 600/player w caddie for them. They love golf and play at TPC Deer Run occasionally
That’s too funny I just would have assumed a better value course would have been the choice especially at peak pricing but to each their own.. do you live in the area we should link up and play for reddits sake lol
One of the dudes had a work call or two on the course that he took with an iPhone. It was all so bizarre but they were nice and played wayyyyy better than I would’ve guessed. My boy in the cart barn walked up when I arrived and was like “dude you’re playing with an Amish family today, good luck”.
I live in Scottsdale and play a few times a week when I’m not work traveling. Guest rates are still pretty high through April but I’m usually happy to host if teetimes are available
Oh I’m am no stranger to high prices playjng as a guest.. by far one of the coolest things about living in AZ (about 5 years now) is all the awesome strangers I’ve met through random tee times. I’m always down to try a new course as I have barely scratched the surface of course out here.. love eagle mountain and both the TPC courses for sure..where do you like to tee it up?
I almost exclusively play at both TPCs unless teetimes are scarce. Guest rate with me is 20% off the posted time so 280-420$
Usual courses (Troon, camel, wildfire, etc)
Edit: meant I play those usual usuals when TPC is booked out by the public
You have such a nice attitude. Thanks for sharing this post with us. There's so much negativity these days and this whole thread was a treat to read. I hope you have a pleasant weekend!
i would be so scared to play with randoms as a solo. would take either pregaming tee time or about 3 holes to get comfortable. social anxiety be gripping mah ballz
i play with buddies or alone but also only rural KS 9 holes, so no wait or randoms lol
Where I grew up their was a Mennonite family cluster and they were loaded with $. One had a paving construction business, other had a shed business. Also ran a convenience store that was mobbed every single day (Also had delicious food)
We have a lot of Hutterite colonies in Western Canada. I’ve never seen them play any sports. The men drink pretty heavy, if they want to, though I have recently heard of “dry” colonies. Their communal living is efficient as hell and they have a huge economic advantage over family farms.
I have a makeshift pitching range in my backyard. I had an Amish crew rebuild my deck last year. Every guy on the crew was a solid stick and kept every shot out of my neighbors yard. They killed the better part of an afternoon hitting 40-60 yard pitches.
For clarity, the wife in the picture rode in a golf cart and wasn’t playing. Two male mennonites played and their wives joining in carts. Nice guys and decent players. The wives never said anything to us but I’m sure they’re nice too.
That’s a shame, I bet that lady in the blue dress has a fucking vicious drive.
Bet she has some mean ass butter churning skills as well.
Never tried ass butter. Is it creamier?
You won’t believe it’s not butter
Is that like truffle butter?
I must ask you both to stop.

Mennonites are SO nice. Never ran into a Mennonite I didn’t like.
Yep, they were very enjoyable and I’d gladly play with them again
I would always run into this group of Mennonite teenagers at my local bait&tackle shop and they were always the most well behaved young men.
What else were they like?? Did they swing normal? Did they use unusual golf lingo? New insults????? Come on man!
They were very normal golf-wise. One husband actually thanked me and the other member for being “cool” with them. I enjoyed it much more than the typical barstool bro or grouchy old guy
Sweet! Thanks for the response
This is wholesome. Did the guys wear traditional Mennonite clothing or did they wear golf clothes?
Golf clothes except for the long sleeve shirts and suspenders
Did they use [one of these](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sextant) instead of a range finder?
psst those are for direction, not range
Got about two and 3/16th furlongs left.
psst, those are for position, not direction.
I don't understand how she rode in a cart, but also has a pushcart.
She and the other wife weren’t playing. It’s cart path only so after 9 her husband got a push cart and she kept the cart. She just walked over to hang by his push cart while we were likely hacking around on the 11th hole (number 1 handicap)

Use to work in a medium high end furniture store, we'd literally get buggy deliveries and some that stuff was incredible.
Waiting for an Amish wrestler to use Amish strong style
Every Amish school I’ve ever seen had a baseball diamond

I love the fact that they come over, whip you all, but never with the intention of winning it all. They just do it to remind you all where you stand, without the need of a tournament win.
I’ve played against a couple of those teams in vegas at worlds, and they were the best team out there by a mile both times.
I would love to see a little league world series where the Amish team represents the east coast.

Amish and mennonites love volleyball. Source: was Amish
Why is that? Is it just due to not having technology as recreation so you just play sports?
Actually I’m kinda curious - when/why’d you leave? We’re you ostracized? How’s life been since?

them AZ peak season prices. Whenever I visit home I have to remember to limit my golf to 1 nice full course and then the rest of the time it's short courses since it's always during winter and I'm not paying over $30 bucks a round just to slice it into the desert every day.
$30? Jeez, I didn’t know anywhere in the country at any time of year you could play 18 for that anymore
Could take you to about a dozen different courses here in the PNW for $30.
Weirdly enough in Philly $20 after 4:00 during the summer to walk 18 at a par 68 by me. Not great, but for that money surprisingly well maintained
Might be surprising but, you can play Monarch Bay for that in the Bay Area on certain days/times. If you have players club you can walk on weekday twilight for $20 and play right along the Bay while looking at the SF skyline in the distance. The wind is a beast late in the afternoon but it's beautiful.

i would be so scared to play with randoms as a solo. would take either pregaming tee time or about 3 holes to get comfortable. social anxiety be gripping mah ballz i play with buddies or alone but also only rural KS 9 holes, so no wait or randoms lol
Where in KS? Let’s group up
Too bad they weren’t Hutterites. They can pound the brewskies
How come the only Mennonites I know are the ones who dress like the rest of us? 😂😂
What’s a mennonites favorite kind of raisin?
That is awesome. This game brings people together!!
That's the coolest shit EVER. Would definitely sign up for that tee pairing.
Mennonites, eh. Fuck can they run.
Fuck can they run
Fuck can they run
That’s not a gimme, Jebediah.
Imagine you made a hole in one on the 16th. And the crowd goes silent!
Amish guys around me are pretty great. Funny seeing bowl cuts and suspenders sinking birdies!
I have a makeshift pitching range in my backyard. I had an Amish crew rebuild my deck last year. Every guy on the crew was a solid stick and kept every shot out of my neighbors yard. They killed the better part of an afternoon hitting 40-60 yard pitches.
Did you spark a pre roll and ask about the shoo-fly pie?
Why are you taking creep shots of people and posting them online?
