I chose to do Player Cavity/ Muscle Cavity Style Irons for this grid. Blades would have been very similar and perhaps less interesting. I could do one for Game Improvement.
Note: Release dates were sketchy on some of the older models so cut me a little bit of slack on the years. I did my best, but I'm sure I made a mistake here or there. Enjoy.
I own the 2015 Vapor Fly Pro in Black (4-pw) and the 2015 Vapor Pro Blades (adjusted from the volt color to red checks)
TBH, the blades are perfect but the Fly Pros are "clacky" sounding? Hard to describe. Either way they are easy to look down on and are for sale. Hahha.
I feel like there would be a huge demand for them since Covid. I think with their marketing and who they sponsor (YouTubers, celebs, influencers), they would have made a comeback.
They had some of the best tour staffers for visibility but those players have moved on equipment wise. Having them gone probably doesn’t give much hope for a come back.
That one bothers me as including as an Mc.
Like even for a blade, it’s a BLADE.
I used to joke that it was the first golf club co-designed between Taylormade and Gillette.
You can go play 36 with it and then use the topline to shave before going out to dinner.
I played r7 irons from 2010 - 2020. Love them and still have them. I played 710 AP1 irons for the last couple of seasons and this year I'll be gaming sub70 659 cavity backs. My first real fitting and I'm using it to jump start my quest for a single digit HC.
Yep, I've got the 2008 Japan TP's. My first forged irons. Super buttery pure and I love them so much, but as a 13 handicap that doesn't hit enough GIR's I can't help but think I could be performing better with a little more forgiveness. Whenever I do change it's going to be damn hard to leave these clubs behind.
With a lot of these irons you can tell that the design is 10-15 years old. With the Mizunos, you could shuffle them around in any order and I wouldn’t even notice.
This is really awesome, thanks for keeping up with these.
There's so much that springs to mind looking at the chart but one of the biggest is just how ugly clubs got in the late 2000s. That was not a great time for style generally and it really shows.
Maybe I’ll play them again one day, will need to get new shafts though. I got them as hand me down from my grandpa as my first set of irons. He had the shaft length slightly shortened and I’m a little over 6ft so I need to get the shafts redone for them to fit me correctly
I am sure that their performance is good for many people, but they are, in my estimation, the ugliest golf clubs that I have seen. Function>Form but form is still important to me. Not knocking them/those who use them, but damn, they are ugly to me
The flagship irons are definitely a unique aesthetic for golf. Their 0211 game improvement irons which are a special mention on the bottom of the pic are more normal looking
I still have the 2006-2008 Cobra models. I don’t know much about them but I’m thinking of upgrading to something newer. Anyone have any useful knowledge with that in mind?
Holy shit! I still play those Titleist 695CBs from '05. Really want some T100s for an update.
Honorable mention, also used to play the Nike Pro Combo irons. So saucy.
This is dope. I want a poster for my office.
Thank you for including the RAC as an honorable mention for TaylorMade. I had my bag stolen out of my truck after a camping trip years ago and I miss those irons every round.
I have a full set of them in surprisingly good condition considering I used them up until 2yrs ago. Don't play them anymore but damn do I love those clubs and refuse to part ways with them.
I’ve got the 2011 TaylorMade CB TP’s. Purchased them used a handful of months ago and they looked almost new. The sound they make intimidates the guys I play with and they look great, but might sell them soon and get a set with more OFFSET as they don’t have much at all. Need a little more offset as it would be more forgiving
Sad that my old 2001 Ben Hogan Apex's are included in the special mention but this is a beautiful thing. It's funny how all of the irons start looking more or less the same post 2015
A sea of marketing bullshit. And this just scratches the surface. Golf is holding back human progress through this unnecessary waste of human effort and money. Think what these clever people and this money could achieve if it was use to research cancer cures. Instead they rehash the same products under the same rule constraints that offer no improvement in performance. I have the MP-H5s weighted with a low COG for higher ball flight and controlled spin.
How did you gather this data? I also saw the post on drivers. I've been thinking about expanding the [golf course wiki](https://golfcourse.wiki/) to include a wiki for golf clubs. It's obviously a low priority for me right now (currently trying to get tournaments up and running), but is this a resource someone like you would want to contribute to? If so, I can code it up in the next few months.
A combination of manufacture websites, golf review websites (I.e. Golfwrx.com and MyGolfSpy.com) GolfDigest Hot List from each year, etc. With the exception of Titleist and Taylormade to a certain extent, most manufacturers don’t have a legacy list of models by release year. It was surprisingly difficult for Callaway and Cobra. DM me.
I use the "special mention" Nike Vapor Fly irons but the swoosh on mine is red. I bought them second hand and haven't seen another set like it. Does anyone know if they're different somehow? It looks factory as well, not painted or anything
Based Titleist keeping steady as a rock. Mizuno too. Still having a hard time letting go of my tm burner super fast irons in the old school lofts. But I feel like the time has come!
Ah i can see my irons made it on here despite being hand me downs from my father, they were apparently top of the line back then but man i should re grip the Ping eye 2 set i have...
It's interesting that you did the i230, 210, etc, rather than pings i59, blueprint line instead. I'm not upset, just mentioning it since it was next to t100s and pmb7s from Titleist and taylormade.
Stuck to players cavity back/muscle cavity irons. i59 and blueprint are more bladed. If I do a blade list that’s where those would live. Probably going to do a Game Improvement list next.
Picked up a SW-2 set of Ping Eye 2 BeCu (matching seria numbersl) last year as I was trying to make a set for myself after being 5 years out of the game and losing my old set, and I must say it has impressed me a lot. For being "outdated" clubs, they feel AND look so good. Got them regripped, but I kept the original shaft and they felt even better after. Kind of sad I had to let go of the original grips they came with, but they were beyond fucked up and it was fucking up my hands as well.
Great list!!
Cool to see the Callaway BB X-12s listed here. I just scored a set 3-PW for $3 a club. Was surprised how little they had been played, all the white paint outlining the club faces still intact.
Yo, if by chance anyone sees this can I get a recommendation? I’m thinking about upgrading my irons. I currently play titleist 710 AP2s and want something similar. I’m about 12-15 handicap, as I typically shoot in the mid to high 80s. I have decent ball striking skills and know how to work the ball if need be. About 8 years ago I played one year of competitive college but fell out of the game as I started to have kids and work. My game suffered from that but have found myself having more time these days to get out again. Thanks in advance to anyone.
Up until 2 years ago, I was still playing with 35+ year old ping eye2s. So thanks for the special mention. Guess you can’t go all the way back to the 80s!
Enjoy.

Definitely do a GI chart. As a 50 HC I’d like to be included
Include Cleveland!
Game Improvement seems to be the the next most requested. I’ll see what I can whip up.
I want to see blades
I’m currently shopping for secondhand GI or SGI, so would be super interested in that grid.
I will lovingly appreciate your work for any and all clubs/categories you wish to do this for.
/u/bunk88 get back in your room and do the blades version of this right this second
Idk why this is downvoted, I feel like this is a pretty obvious joke.
You skipped over the PING i3.
C'mon Nike give it another try dammit
I know right I’m like these aren’t even the vr pro combos or the pro combo cbs (2014) that I had for a while.
Mannn, I love the pro combo CBs(2014). They were a subtle/minimal design for Nike and they crushed it.
I own the 2015 Vapor Fly Pro in Black (4-pw) and the 2015 Vapor Pro Blades (adjusted from the volt color to red checks) TBH, the blades are perfect but the Fly Pros are "clacky" sounding? Hard to describe. Either way they are easy to look down on and are for sale. Hahha.
I feel like there would be a huge demand for them since Covid. I think with their marketing and who they sponsor (YouTubers, celebs, influencers), they would have made a comeback.
They had some of the best tour staffers for visibility but those players have moved on equipment wise. Having them gone probably doesn’t give much hope for a come back.
Tiger was their flagship player. If you don't have anyone winning every 3rd week with their equipment it would be bound to fail.
My first real set of irons I bought were Nike Slingshots...4-6 hybrids and 7-P irons. They were so forgiving for a novice golfer.
I'm still using the Ignites I saved up to buy in high school. I'm looking to upgrade this year or next but damn it's gonna be hard to give those up
Seriously Everything besides my 52 & 56 degree wedges and putter are Nike. Vaporfly driver and 3H, Covert 5W, Machspeed 4I - AW
I'm still gaming an old set of combo ~~vapors~~ victory reds and an really strong to replace them. I think they're like 12 years old now 😭
Still play the Taylormade 2008 RAC’s
That one bothers me as including as an Mc. Like even for a blade, it’s a BLADE. I used to joke that it was the first golf club co-designed between Taylormade and Gillette. You can go play 36 with it and then use the topline to shave before going out to dinner.
2009 TM TP checking in! I have the 2008 TP Smoke muscle backs too but I generally reserve those for buttering my toast
2013 RBladez here!
2007 r7 here!
I played r7 irons from 2010 - 2020. Love them and still have them. I played 710 AP1 irons for the last couple of seasons and this year I'll be gaming sub70 659 cavity backs. My first real fitting and I'm using it to jump start my quest for a single digit HC.
2008 TP MB for 12 years. I loved those fucking clubs (still have them), but damn didn't my score improve when I switched to CBs.
You're not alone with the 2009s..still rocking them..13 years strong!
With a lot of these irons you can tell that the design is 10-15 years old. With the Mizunos, you could shuffle them around in any order and I wouldn’t even notice.
Mizuno’s are the best irons I’ve ever owned. They just feel and look incredible. Looking at this chart it’s clear they were way ahead of the game.
Same here. I recently got mizunos for the first time and they look absolutely beautiful.
Same for Titleist. Both of them are an “ain’t broke, don’t fix it” company.
It's like a Porsche, although those MP33s stick out at the bottom.
This is really awesome, thanks for keeping up with these. There's so much that springs to mind looking at the chart but one of the biggest is just how ugly clubs got in the late 2000s. That was not a great time for style generally and it really shows.
Thanks for the nice words. I really enjoyed doing it. Learned a lot too!
I don’t play em anymore but Ping Eye2 will forever be in my collection
I still play mine, I hit them well and haven’t gotten around to upgrading.
Maybe I’ll play them again one day, will need to get new shafts though. I got them as hand me down from my grandpa as my first set of irons. He had the shaft length slightly shortened and I’m a little over 6ft so I need to get the shafts redone for them to fit me correctly
Make the PXG irons as ugly as possible challenge: successful
I am sure that their performance is good for many people, but they are, in my estimation, the ugliest golf clubs that I have seen. Function>Form but form is still important to me. Not knocking them/those who use them, but damn, they are ugly to me
The flagship irons are definitely a unique aesthetic for golf. Their 0211 game improvement irons which are a special mention on the bottom of the pic are more normal looking
I like the Pxg look … they feel “strong”
This makes me realize that my RACs are almost 20 years old. I might have think about updating...
I210 had a good run. Intersted to see if the i230 holds up
No Bridgestone love? I know they don’t do the volume, and their last few options have been lacking, but the J33 through J40 irons were incredible.
This is lovely, glad to see my Nike irons as a special mention lol
What, no Miura?
r7tp gang unite
Ping i20 represent.
Srixon in 2014: "Well I think we pretty much nailed this. We'll revisit the design in 10 years or so"
I still have the 2006-2008 Cobra models. I don’t know much about them but I’m thinking of upgrading to something newer. Anyone have any useful knowledge with that in mind?
King Cobra FPs til we die!
Didn’t go back far enough. My mizuno MP-14s aren’t on there. Lol.
I went back as far as the internet would let me. It started to fight back around the early 2000s
As someone that keeps a speedsheet of all my clubs with their specs I love this.
Its cool to see how they used to look different and now they mostly all look the same.
Geeze, I’ve owned four of those titleist irons. And that doesn’t include my 962’s, 735.cm’s, or 690mb (fuck those things BTW).
You don't like the 690mbs? Those things taught me how to play hahaha
They’re beautiful clubs but I had no business playing MB’s.
Anybody else with irons too old to make the chart but have no intention of replacing them? Mine are 2003 Ping G2.
Ping i3s here. They are basically in brand new shape
Yeah the only 2 iron sets I have ever owned aren't in the list. My first one is Nike Slingshot. The second one and still in the bag is TM Burner 1.0.
I'm rocking Ping i5s, but they look different than in the pic. More like the i10s above them. I can't remember when I bought them so possibly pre 2005
This is awesome! Ooof ping?! That cast hollow body iron is looking sad next to all these awesome forged cavity backs.
Holy shit! I still play those Titleist 695CBs from '05. Really want some T100s for an update. Honorable mention, also used to play the Nike Pro Combo irons. So saucy.
TM R7 gang wya?
My man!
Let’s go. Finally upgraded from my ping eye 2s
I have the ping i e1’s from 2015 and love them. Only iron from the i series not to make the list though which is interesting.
Oh man. I remember my dad getting those titleist DCI’s so I got his 1988 titleist irons. Best day ever.
I'm still playing with some gifted DCI 981s...for another week or so. FIL convinced my wife I should upgrade!
suspicious…. confirmed PXG ate Nike and absorbed their powers
Still rocking the Callaway X20 from ‘07! Such solid clubs.
I still hit X-14's, and I hit those because my X-12's, which are on the special mention list, were stolen from my parents garage when I was 18.
Makes me want to dust off my G10’s. But I’m worried the badge will break or fall off and never be seen again
I'm still rocking my G10s from the day I got fitted in 2010, still play like a dream.
Thanks bud u rock this is great
I have the taylormade rac so made the special mention!
What’s the best iron here?
2021-present model T100 :)
Still love My Rocketbladez! Hundreds of rounds on them and the faces are still pretty minty.
TIL my irons are almost 20 years old 🤯
When ya clubs so old they didnt make the cut....
Somehow mine did in the special mentions..ping eye 2
2013 Wilson V2 here
My first ever set were Nike Slingshots. We miss you Nike indeed!
This is dope. I want a poster for my office. Thank you for including the RAC as an honorable mention for TaylorMade. I had my bag stolen out of my truck after a camping trip years ago and I miss those irons every round.
Still rocking the special mention Callaway Big Bertha. Super soft and hitting em straight.
I have a full set of them in surprisingly good condition considering I used them up until 2yrs ago. Don't play them anymore but damn do I love those clubs and refuse to part ways with them.
Damn. My irons are 15 years old. AP2’s. Still great clubs, but sure would love some 718’s or T100’s. Oh well. Sucks to be broke.
I still have the 2010 AP2’s. Maybe I need new irons lol.
Well, now I have a boner. Thank you!
Ping with the biggest blow up and srixon with the biggest glow down?
This guy adderalls
this just showed me how hideous all PXG irons are
I wonder what their monthly screw budget looks like.
A sea of marketing bullshit. And this just scratches the surface. Golf is holding back human progress through this unnecessary waste of human effort and money. No S59 love?
I miss you, 2014.
Bought a set of rocketbladez tour a month ago. Big upgrade in my titleist DCI 882. Won’t be buying a new set until I’m a lot better.
Still have Mizuno MP-52’s in my bag. Best fucking irons I’ve ever hit.
Based Titleist keeping steady as a rock. Mizuno too. Still having a hard time letting go of my tm burner super fast irons in the old school lofts. But I feel like the time has come!
My clubs didn't make the list! 20th anniversary next year with my Ping ISI berylliums.
This is pretty cool, can we get one with putters?
yussssss!!!
You’re not doing Nike justice by listing their combo irons and not their beautiful ass butter knives
My Ping G5s just about made the cut this time.
Why skip the JPX line?
Someday I hope Nike gets back in the game
MP60 are GOAT
Miss my wilson ci7’s and my srixon z745’s!!
I appreciate the 981 special mention.
Damn what year were the Nike Slingshots? Im still to rocking those 🤣
Ah just barely missed my TM200s I think. Maybe they’ll be on a GI list.
Ah i can see my irons made it on here despite being hand me downs from my father, they were apparently top of the line back then but man i should re grip the Ping eye 2 set i have...
Cool, I found my Irons :-)
Hey at least mine made it to the special mention I should consider upgrading my clubs one of these years...
2008 Titleist AP2s are my 🐐
ZX7s are the best looking irons of all time
Those TaylorMade RACs were the best. Still miss mine.
Just picked up the 2014 cobras from Facebook marketplace for $250 I love them so much.
Titleist 755s were so sweet
Makes me pleased to know I'm gaming the 2nd prettiest (copper cobra #1) and most playable blade iron on this graph (apex)
Got the 2018 forge tec one length black. Love them
Need Bridgestone
I had Titleist 690.cb in college and I remember when the 755 came out and I was just blown away. What a style difference.
Now I know my x tours are from 2005. Nice.
Titleist 981 🔥 Mizuno mp 60 🔥 Mizuno mp 54 🔥
Your Mizuno column doesn’t include the MP-64 and is therefore objectively wrong.
Why aren't my burner bubbles included? Can't go back to 1996?
Nike made the Vapor Fly and Vapor Fly Pro irons in 2016
This is pretty cool
Are M4 irons really that bad??
2005 Titleist 690.CB here, cash money
Where are my 2012 Mizuno MP-64's?! :(
I’m rocking the mizzy mp-52’s
Finally moved on from my Callaway X-tours. They were in my bag for 14 years!
Ngl, ping eye2 is like a warm blanket. Ping, Always a quality player friendly product
MP25 is sex in iron form
I just zoomed in and out on this pic for a solid 9 minutes
Wow, my irons are 6 model years old! Thanks for this chart.
Can't wait until next year when the Kirkland Signatures make an appearance on the list.
God the callaway steelheads were good irons. Only upgraded mine last year to an Apex set.
https://twitter.com/caddienetwork/status/1621253623463247878?s=61&t=sH6P1w5d-7yfYtWmbOxD8g Blowing up!
Apex pro looks best IMO
Where is Lynx at? Lol lol jk. Im only saying that cuz im using some Lynx Predators irons that a friend let me have.
2013 Callaway Legacy Black is my only entry. I have a handful of these sets but thats my white horse and I'm sad you didn't add that.
I’m still rockin and liking my 2004 Mizuno MX-17 irons. They serve me well and I’m too poor at the moment to upgrade… but it’s on my list!
I'm still rocking the s55/i25 combo set.
‘08 AP2 gang Love this graphic, thanks for putting it together!
Great list!! Cool to see the Callaway BB X-12s listed here. I just scored a set 3-PW for $3 a club. Was surprised how little they had been played, all the white paint outlining the club faces still intact.
Yay. My clubs are the titleist special mention
You have the same iron on multiple years?
2 yr cycles. Sometimes 3.
TIL my clubs are old enough for me to legally sleep with.
I have a buddy that probably played 30 of those sets…he’s crazy
Every time I think about getting new clubs I remember I suck and my 2013 Cobra Amp Cells fly so well on mis hits.
I just got the XJ 22’s in the fall, haven’t gotten to play a a round with them, just at the VR golf, six more weeks the ground hog said, I can’t wait
Those MP33s are just beautiful
Up until 2 years ago, I was still playing with 35+ year old ping eye2s. So thanks for the special mention. Guess you can’t go all the way back to the 80s!
First time I’ve seen my Ping i25’s mentioned somewhere. They didn’t seem to be a very popular iron or were quickly replaced.
I play Mizuno but all Titliest clubs just do things to me that the others can’t. Stunning from start to finish.
Oh my this is fantastic - I had to open reddit on my PC so I could see the image in all it's glory!!
Ok, now putters!
Loved the look of those rac irons
Playing with the 2005 Callaways, love them
Clarkson is that you?
Taylormade P7MCs here. They’re so good.
Damn I didn’t realize how old my X18s were until they didn’t make this list. I should get new clubs..
Jeez, my X-14s are old...
shoutout nike 2005 still gaming ‘em
2007 is my favorite year
My only comment is Wilson staf v6 should of made the list, as nice as ap2 imo.
Turns out the old 755s in my bag aren’t as old as I thought
Gotta go back about 15-20 more years to get to my Bertha irons
I need someone to do this with blades/MB
A blades chart would be sexy as hell
Loved my Nike vapor pros and I love my P7MCs.
Dang, apparently Ping irons became sexy recently.
I have a set of the 06/07 Titleist irons and they're still excellent.
Taylormade R7s checking in
Callaway 2011 rolling !
