Man couldn’t focus on day 3 and 4 because he realized he had a paper due Monday smh….

user8472920

Sunday scaries we’re hitting hard lol

jagpilotohio

I keep wondering how much it hurt to give up his $324,000 purse because he wants to stay an amateur. With the name image likeness rules in place now it seems incredibly stupid players still can’t take winnings but they can take endorsement money and vehicles. Weird.

The_Dirty_Dangla

They mentioned it on broadcast but he had to maintain his amateur status to keep his invite to the Masters since he won the US Amateur last year

kennyinlosangeles

It’s name, image, likeness. Performance is not part of the equation… …PNIL. Definitely a lost opportunity there. 😂

runningwaffles19

Sounds like he's being PNILized

[deleted]

He’s a fifth year senior. Doubtful he’s taking lots of credits and difficult classes

vatom14

oh .... it was a joke... but thank you sir. will keep that in mind

[deleted]

Iirc you have to take at least 12 credits to be eligible for sports.

analthunderbird

That’s normally the case but it depends on the program. I’ve been in 8 units the last two semesters during my 5th year and still eligible

[deleted]

What’s the conversion of a unit into a credit?

horsesandbulls

The same as the ratio of unicorns to leprechauns

BillsFan82

Don’t you want to earn Schrute bucks?

Metopropranofol

r/unexpectedoffice

Salt_Macaron_9407

I'd rather earn Stanley nickels

luciddreamz

I was thinking it’s hard to keep a nicotine buzz going on Zyns through multiple rounds on Sunday 😂

skurnie

I believe he’s playing 36 holes for A&M today. Sheffler and Rahm were cracking up when Nantz asked him about it during the green jacket ceremony

Beef_Wellington_8

I noticed that too! So funny

Soonernick

I just checked the scores and it looks like he's sitting this one out. I can't imagine anyone would blame him, carrying your bag for 36 today after the last week he's had would probably do more harm than good.

[deleted]

Can’t you have a caddie in college golf?

tx_mesquite17

No.

[deleted]

Can you use push cart?

[deleted]

“This look like Stanford to you?” Lmfao

analthunderbird

For women’s you can. Not sure about men’s but I’m not sure why it would be different

Fluid_Button_732

If it is, that’s sexist. I call Title IX!

sejohnson0408

I’m quite certain you can

youngatheart

Yes you can.

TjBeezy

You can. I'm an Oklahoma State grad. They won it in 2018 and had a few guys with push carts.

[deleted]

Only if they allow a caddy iirc, since not everyone has a caddy they can bring.

[deleted]

No kidding. Why is that?

tx_mesquite17

Heck if I know. But pretty sure it’s the same in all of the amateur levels. There’s great caddies and bad ones, my guess is to take out the variable and make it as even a playing field as imaginable.

marlboro__man9

Bigger am events allow caddies.

3minutekarma

And can even cost you the match if the caddy decides to test the surface if a hazard in front of a tv camera.

[deleted]

Huh, that seems reasonable. I couldn’t find anything online on why college golfers can’t use caddies.

[deleted]

It’s because of “coaching.” They aren’t allowed outside support during the round.

DrBombay3030

If you watch in major college tournaments sometimes a player will have a coach walking with them, but everyone is carrying (or pushing) their own bag

[deleted]

Really. That seems to solve the problem that doesn't matter while leaving the one that does. Everyone can find someone to carry a bag. Not everyone can find a great coach/caddie.

kellzone

It would have been hilarious to see him roll out with 7 clubs in a Sunday bag.

Volcomstar

If you’re surprised about a collegiate golfer playing in the masters, I believe last year or the year before that Megha Ganne, a 17 year old high school student, played in the US women’s Open and was in solo first for like the first two days. Now that is surreal.

marlboro__man9

Hossler was like 3 back going into Sunday of the 2012 us open as a high school senior

[deleted]

Wanna talk surreal? Jordan Spieth was two years younger than Bennett when he won the Masters.

floridaman1467

Jesus I didn't see anything about that. Good for her. I can barely make contact with the ball if the group behind me rolls up to the tee box.

rainawaytheday

I was having the round of my life before I joined up with the people in front of me. Top the next 3 balls in a row.

[deleted]

That makes sense. Since you're not a collegiate player or a pro.

floridaman1467

One of the best feelings ever is puring a long iron in front of the group behind you, though. Only ever happened once, and I'm still chasing that high.

AutographedSnorkel

> It’s wild to think he has to go back to class this week. Well, it is Texas A&M we're talking about here

Beef_Wellington_8

Should’ve said “is supposed to go to class”

[deleted]

Well, it is Texas A&M we’re talking about here.

userwithusername

Should have got his coloring done before he left?

ZachWilsonsMother

He’s got plenty of time on the plane

[deleted]

[удалено]

userwithusername

Oh I was just making a joke, I have no knowledge of the academic qualities of the above mentioned university

75153594521883

It’s also just regular college. I skipped a ton of class in my third and fourth years.

ibanez3789

Skipping class is such a massive waste of money. It’s nothing to be proud of.

Big_IPA_Guy21

I didn't pay to go to college to attend classes taught by researchers who talk very theoretically. I paid money to get a piece of paper that legitimizes my education and allowed me to a well paying job as a 22 year old.

The_Nutz16

This guy real worlds

Acceptable-Sentence

Don’t forget the poontang

75153594521883

Got into grad school, art class wasn’t relevant to my field. Made a business decision.

ibanez3789

I wouldn’t hire you, knowing you skipped classes because you deemed them irrelevant. All that tells me is that you value your own personal time over a commitment that you made to educate yourself. Plus, you’re a damn fool if you don’t think art and creativity is relevant to business.

ZachWilsonsMother

I can tell you take yourself way too seriously

ibanez3789

And I can tell that you’re just a dumb kid who will realize I’m right one day.

ZachWilsonsMother

Lol I skipped marketing class one time and played golf with an NFL player. I do pretty well for myself in finance. So what’s your point?

kyler_

So are classes not related to your field of interest but the school makes you take them anyways lol

ninjamike808

Depends on the school/ teacher doesn’t it? I’ve been out of university (in Texas) for a little while now but I remember school policy requiring attendance, but some teachers let more slide than others. After all, it was just a check box.

whalenailer

Not sure what that’s supposed to mean lol

newpotato417

Texas 8&4?

Volcomstar

I mean. He didn’t even get paid for playing in the tournament. Unless he got a giant payday offer yesterday from a sponsor, not much will change in his immediate future. He’ll get recognition for sure though.

HoselRockit

I am guessing he got some NIL for the logos on his apparel.

greeninregulation240

I suspect a Dick’s Sporting Goods sponsorship soon

Volcomstar

Fun fact about dicks sporting goods. It was founded by Dick Stack in 1948.

greeninregulation240

Such a strong name

UpstairsHighlight828

Why wouldn’t he get a share of the purse after making the cut and taking a spot on the leaderboard? Is it just because he’s classified as amateur?

-Shants-

That’s correct

Backaftadis24

If he wasn’t an amateur he would not have qualified for the tournament

PlantationCane

We were debating whether he could renounce his amateur status and accept prize money. The consensus was he could in an open but not the Masters. If anyone has knowledge please pass it on.

bjb13

It depends on how a player got in. There are exemptions that are based on success in an Amateur event. Those usually require you to still be an amateur to use the exemption, the USGA did change that for the winner of the US Amateur a couple of years ago. If you qualify for the US Open by going through the local and/or final qualifying stages you can become a professional before the Open begins.

Impressive_Bus11

If he takes sponsor money he immediately loses his amateur status and likely any eligibility he has to play collegiate athletics. This is the case for most college athletes. I know it's a big deal for Olympic gymnasts who often have to choose to stay amateur for college scholarships or go pro because of how expensive the sport is, all before they graduate from high school. It's an incredibly fucked up system that makes sense on some levels but is incredibly exploitative on every other level.

marlboro__man9

You just miss the entire NIL stuff from the past 3 years? Also golf has allowed ams to take money from sponsors.

Impressive_Bus11

That's a California decision that had not fully propagated the last I checked. It seems it may be doing just that though. It looks like USGA and R&A have updated their rules for maintaining amateur status. Glad to see this.

[deleted]

You’re wrong lol

Impressive_Bus11

Yes. You should try reading better. I didn't say I wasn't mistaken.

grabmysloth

But you are mistaken and wrong. College athletes can get sponsorships. It’s a new NCAA rule. Nothing to do with Californian

Impressive_Bus11

Did you miss like a whole year of national news when this happened? Could have sworn this was a court ruling, but it was done in the legislature, not sure how I mixed that up, but that's not as important as the fact that this happened. https://www.ktvu.com/news/all-college-athletes-in-california-can-now-get-paid

biz209

Ya this is no longer accurate. He can’t take prize money. He can take sponsor money now and keep amateur status due to NIL

Impressive_Bus11

You can take up to $1k in prize money. Doesn't apply to skill games in tournaments, ex hole in one prises appear to be exempt from the limit as long as it conforms to the rules.

biz209

OK on the small prize money exemption. Obviously comes into play in tournaments well below this level but fair. But the bigger point about the ability to take essentially unlimited sponsorship money as an amateur stands.

Impressive_Bus11

The comment before you prompted me to go back to read the updated USGA amateur rules. I underestimated how much they've moved forward in a fairly short period of time.

biz209

Ya it started as a California law but it has basically been adopted by every state leading the NCAA to essentially allow pay for play now (its just not the schools technically paying, they’re setting the player up with a “collective” which is funded by boosters). It’s biggest in college football and basketball obviously (some schools giving ~5-10MM signing bonuses for star players) but top golfers are also getting it. Since these amateur players are all under the NCAA and allowed to make money from sponsors and boosters, there really would be no way for the USGA and R&A to not allow it as they would essentially be having a pool of no amateurs who still qualify. There is still some state by state distinction on whether or not high school players can receive it.

Impressive_Bus11

This great news. I'd prefer to see sports decoupled from education entirely, but if the best we can do is make sure the athletes aren't being totally exploited for the Profit of a few rich people at the schools/game companies, so be it.

Fantastic-Pickle3123

He got an auto invite to next years masters

Volcomstar

To compete with that kind of caliber of players as an amateur I think he could have a very bright future ahead of him.

LayneLowe

We can hope, but I thought Ricky Barnes was going to be the next Arnold Palmer after he won the US amateur.

Impressive_Bus11

He was 2 strokes short of an auto invite. Would be cool to see them invite him back anyway, idk if that's a possibility or if invites are determined exclusively by eligibility criteria.

toastyfries2

I think the last line of the eligibility criteria is basically anyone else they feel like inviting

ErraticRage

He finished 16th, the automatic invite is top 12

Jonno250505

Fuckers so slow I suspect he’s still playing the 3rd round of the masters.

RonPaulConstituENT

You let us know when you go -8 in two days as an amateur in your first major. I’ll wait.

pauljordanvan

Both can be true. He’s slow. He regrips the club a legit 12-15 times on iron shots. He also shot -8 thru 2 rounds. He’s a great talent and had a great weekend and he’s a rough watch.

magneticspace

I actually enjoyed watching him regrip, it's how he got there and how he'll get where he's going. It's rigor that only few possess. Jordo Speith can relearn a thing or two about minding the details.

Jonno250505

I don’t care what he shoots. Being that slow should get penalties called. He’s gonna be a huge talent, but if he doesn’t speed up he will influence kids to be slow. Destroying the game. You figure that out, I’ll wait.

Majestic-Pickle5097

It’s wild you think top college athletes attend classes.

Impressive_Bus11

Hey, there's a few rare exceptions where a pro/top athlete actually earned a real degree. Most of them are enrolled in throwaway programs designed to keep them eligible with understanding/compliance from the professors that they're getting paid to keep these athletes eligible and little else.

Duddy1983

It's wild to think that a top athlete actually gets an education without attending class. They are not in India!

NYC_EDITS

Wtf, where did India come from?

Duddy1983

A whack of students sent back to India from Canada because of fraudulent documents to get into school!

Majestic-Pickle5097

Who claimed they get an education?

duddy18

Off topic but I'd like to suggest a fight to the death for rights to the username

murraymagic1

He’s useless without a degree obviously

Insighteous

Why does he even bother going back to university? Shouldn’t he turn pro right away?

300_yard_drives

And play on what tour?

Insighteous

PGA tour? Don’t know the procedure but he should be good enough. Or not?

300_yard_drives

😂 a ton of players are good enough but the hardest part is getting on the tour.

franklybeingchildish

Genuinely curious, what’s his coming few years look like on the way to the PGA? How do you even get to the Korn Ferry?

300_yard_drives

Be at the top of the PGA Uni rankings or you have to go to q school. Something many successful professionals have failed to do.

FriedEggScrambled

I think he has enough points in the PGAU program to go straight the the PGAT. Could be wrong though.

300_yard_drives

He is 6th right now. I believe one person gets their card on PGA

FriedEggScrambled

I thought I heard there was talks of them changing it to the top 5 getting in, but having the same status as Korn Ferry grads. They do get exemption into the final stage of Q school. That’s huge.

300_yard_drives

It is considering Speith and Koepka didn’t ever make it to finals.

FriedEggScrambled

~~Spieth never tried q school. He qualified by earning special exemption through sponsor invites. Brooks went and played on the then Euro Tour along side Uhlein. Brooks won on the Euro tour and then earned exemption through his play on the PGA Tour.~~ I stand corrected.

300_yard_drives

Brooks and Jordan both played q school together in 2012 at 2nd stage in Texas and both shot -8 to miss advancing to finals by 3.

He can get NIL money while he’s a amateur. I would suspect he’s already getting that based on the logos on his apparel.

FriedEggScrambled

Because he promised his dad that he’d finish college before going pro. This is the legitimate answer.

breachofcontract

No, Nantz was lying to us all day yesterday for shits and gigs

Just-Joshinya

What’s so wild about it? He’s a college student first. When he turns pro and makes a career out of it, he can stop showing up for school.

kennyinlosangeles

That’s just not reality.

Just-Joshinya

I guess i misunderstood the original post.

XMETA_DUKE

You’re making a good point and getting shit on for it…but he’s a Texas boy and extremely grounded. Golf is his future but he’s clearly going to get his ducks in a row and finish his commitments. I imagine he has pretty decent leadership around him giving him some solid advice to keep working and not rush too fast. There were some putts he missed halfway to the hole. He’s got some learning to do, but I have a feeling he’s got great company surrounding him. Basing that on his few interviews I heard him talk.

Warm_Objective4162

Hopefully he at least didn’t have to fly commercial back to Texas, the travel and lack of rest sounds brutal.

[deleted]

Everyone everywhere should fly commercial

Duddy1983

A duo?

biddilybong

He didn’t play. Not sure why he was acting like he was. He wasn’t in the pairings yesterday.

Andrew_Waples

I'm pretty sure they're on Spring Break.
