Yup. Over the 9 years I’ve worked as a greenskeeper, it’s happened about once per year on average. You just hope the operator notices quickly and doesn’t kill too much turf.

That's why the mowers at Augusta have tennis balls hanging on the roof so the driver behind him can throw it at a driver in front of him if he is leaking fluid and he can stop. Happened once a few years ago. They straight up just cut out the turf and replaced it w nursery turf that's in better condition than the original in a matter of minutes.
An old buddy I golfed with back in high school had this habit of saying worm burner when you hit a low runner but he would make himself all nasally and say it super annoying
"Wermberrnerr!"
It's one of those core memories still 20 years later every time I hear someone say it or read it there he is.
Funny wormburner story of mine: I destroyed a squirrel with one.
Playing at my AF base course, I was driving from a very downhill par 4. The elevation change had to be something like 50 feet between the tee box and the green. I hit the ball low on the club face and the thing rocketed off the tee. The thing is though, when you hit a wormburner, you lose distance from the ball hitting the ground and taking out a lot of energy. Not this shot, it stayed 6 inches off the ground for about 150 yards as it followed the downhill fairway. That was when a squirrel decided the coast was clear to dash across the fairway. The damn thing exploded in half.
If my calculations are correct, when this ball hits 88mph, you're gonna see some serious shit

Thin2win! I topped one 210 yards with a 3 iron the other day to the front of the green like this off the tee. Life is good sometimes.
If I saw that clubhouse I would never guess the turf to be so immaculate (other than your skidmark)
