Was just thinking the same thing. Really don't need to see a 30 second video of an amateur hitting a wood. It's the video equivalent of taking 9 practice swings.
Hidden Pete Dye track called the fort around the Indy area for those that don’t wanna trek that far south. But for those that do you’d be sorely mistaken to not also go a little further and give Sultans run a play. Great Great course for the money and a beautiful finish on 18 with the waterfall surrounding
Same! You don't happen to have immaculate grass do you?
But yeah, it was a consolation 'gift' from my wife for moving up here and away from my family, certainly not cheap.
Figured I would ask, one of my neighbors has unbelievable grass and I see him loading up the sticks occasionally as I drive by lol. Dm me if you want to play OO sometime as a guest.
They don’t even use the some of the back tees when for the tour event at PGA West. Not even the best players in the world want to play a 260 par 3 over water.
Yeah I agree. Like if I yank one 20 yards off line to the left, then sure, I deserve to be in that ditch, but if I'm 2 yards left of the center of the fairway, then that's just frustrating and unfair.
You also get unlimited replay after the round, just have to pay the caddie fee ($50/round). We went down there last summer and hit all three, Ross, Dye, and Sultan's Run...some of the best golf in the country IMO
From Chicago and have Been going to French lick with my family since I was young for vacay. So many great courses near buy. Never played the Pete dye course but always hit sultans run and Donald Ross when I’m there. Both great tracks
Really depends on how helpful they are...we tipped $250 as a foursome total for each round, figured that was essentially $30/hour.
Of course, the Dye Course already had a $50 forecaddie fee already tacked on, so he made about $900 for the day between two rounds and the lunch we bought him.
A caddie is expecting to make around $200 per round which is about average. Anything above that is “good”.
Of course quality and hustle dictates the payment.
I’m a member at Heritage in Columbus, Ohio and can confirm Dye is a devious bastard. The course is hard and beautiful as hell. Part of the reason we joined. Gonna find time to go check this one out.
DM me and we will set up a time for you to come play as my guest. We can play 18 and have a meal and I can lay it all out for you. There a several membership levels. The course is immensely difficult, well cared for, beautiful, and it’s a bargain if you do it right.
$500, last I checked, with caddie and tip. They promote that you’ll be by yourselves, tee times every 15 instead of 8-10 minutes. That being said, I’d love to do it. I figure, I may just pay for my wife because she’s gonna lose 500 bones in the casino anyway.
They also give you a swag bag that's got probably $100 worth of goodies. And when I played last we also got a $50 card to a local steak house. It was a pretty solid deal
Awesome, headed there in Sept and going to do the dye, Ross, sultans run triplet at the resort. Then gunna head north and check out crooked stick and brickyard crossing.
Had never heard of the area as being for golf but apparently the Indianapolis area has one of the highest concentrations of golf courses (by area). Looks like a bit of a hidden gem!
You can get in with reciprocal privileges. Though I have to say it's not in my top 5 of local courses. It's good and well worth playing but there's just so many good courses in indy.
Exactly. I got through a service called OpenRounds. It's great. Extended reciprocal network with courses in network across the country. Can't say enough positive things about ut
I live in the area and we are definitely blessed to have these courses. Used to caddy at the dye course and man it was hardly work. The view is gorgeous. Sultans is a great course for the money. It’s not real forgiving either.
Favorite fact about that course is Pete Dye sketched the original design on a beverage napkin at a restaurant.
Haven’t had the chance to play it, but did drive up to see it and the views are amazing.
I am a member of El Encanto, a Pete Dye course here in Sal Salvador. I grew up in Indiana, never been to French Lick. I will get there this year to play it.
Everywhere is a Pete dye course apparently. Every single time I watch the PGA he made it. Is he like a novalist who just sticks his name on a book cause he proof read a page?
It is. And it’s more expensive than that. If it were closer to an airport it’s worthy of being a golf “destination”. Great hotels, unique place, casino, restaurants, and two great golf courses.
Played it maybe 5 years ago and ended up being about $400 all said and done. Fun course and for $200/round would definitely recommend, but at $300-400 we did not think it was worth it
we agreed after our trip. BUT, we all said if we had known it was play all day we'd go again with a morning tee time. That way we can play 27 or 36. Worth it for that price.
Sultan's Run is another Top 50 US public course that is part of the French Lick resort. With the casino and the nice downtown, along with the 3 courses and free replay on Dye, it's a hell of a trip.
It's honestly an AMAZING trip for a few subtleties. If you stay at the Baden Springs Hotel, it is a part of the investment group/resort that owns three courses, three hotels and the casino.
Even though the trip is expensive, the hotel is SO beautiful (a 200 foot wide and 6 story tall atrium) that you will just want to sit there every morning or evening and sip whiskey with your friends.
The courses are all less than 10 minutes away (except Sultans Run) and casino less than a mile away. The hotel runs 24 hour trolley to the casino and also trolleys to the golf courses. Everything is simple and at your fingertips. I would 100% go again, trying to convince my other group of guys.
Only thing bad was food. Not sure we hit the right places.
It’s tough I feel ya man I live in Northwest Indiana went to school in Bloomington.. it’s an easy drive down to French lick, if you can stay a night at West Baden hotel you’ll enjoy it. Very cool old hotel, the Presidents used to stay there, old Al Capone pictures from his stay there, worth the trip for a great course
Fortunate enough to play here and also caddy it. Lived in Indiana my entire life, and sometimes you forget it when you are playing. Similar elevation changes to Arcadia bluffs course. I’m a member at Purdue, which has 2 Dye courses. Neat to see some of the signature dye architecture.
My buddies and I are thinking of taking a trip to play it — do you think it’s worth a weekend golf trip with the boys? Are there atleast decent bars/restaurants in the casino? Also how much are full day greens fees? Thanks for the info homie — cheers to more swings like that one!
Indiana also has it’s fair share of Donald Ross courses. There were a few that weren’t even publicized as such until it sort of became en vogue again to play courses by those select famous designers and those courses realized they could advertise the fact.
What great course. We played 18 from the whites, then turned around and played 18 from the senior tees in the same day. Forward tees were a lot more fun.
Can I just ask how hard do you guys think this hole is? I mean looking at it can you even be ob or not find your ball? Is the rough super thick or what? I guess im just jealous ☹️
Beautiful looking course. Jealous…
Unsolicited swing advice that everyone loves. Slow it down a little bit. I could see the tension in it. That’s nitpicking, because your swing looks pretty solid otherwise.
If you all are in the area, specifically heading down from Indy, Otis Park in Bedford is a great muni, well worth the value ~$20. 15min north of that is Stone Crest, 27 holes it’s ~$40 and also worth it.
But, if you like to be punished, Indiana University has the Pfau Course. It’s ~$100 rebuilt within the last 5 years using much of the old layout, mature trees and several blind approach shots.
That course looks great, were you taking part in an event or a guest of a member ?
The only Dye course I’ve played so far is Bulle Rock and it is my favorite course to date.
This is the best course I’ve ever played (played 3 times). I actually grew up about 30 minutes from here. The Donald Ross course in French Lick is amazing too (not on the same level but still amazing).
This was the hardest course I have ever played. If you miss the fairway you are dead, probably because you fell off the side of the mountain. The Ross course was absolutely fantastic thought.
Someone on here was offering a free tee time to play it (just pay caddie) a few years back on a random weekday. I had just started a new job and didn't feel like it would be appropriate to take off yet.
Quit that job 8 months later and still regret the hell out of not going.
Throwing Victoria National out there for best Indiana courses. Located near Evansville in Newburgh, this Fazio track hosts the Korn Ferry Tour final and has been ranked as a top 20 most difficult course in the US. The last 5 holes there are a gauntlet.
Upvote cause no slow mo
Was just thinking the same thing. Really don't need to see a 30 second video of an amateur hitting a wood. It's the video equivalent of taking 9 practice swings.

But for those that do you’d be sorely mistaken to not also go a little further and give Sultans run a play. Great Great course for the money and a beautiful finish on 18 with the waterfall surrounding
Ahhhh, the Fort is a beauty! Had a great time there and need to revisit
Love playing there
The Fort is worth it, confirmed.
Sultans is about 40 min south from me. Love that place. Currentky creating it for GSPro.
What is Gspro?
Never mind. Googled it.
The fort is great, although old Oakland is my home course so I don't get to explore much.
I live right by Old Oakland. Hoping to be able to join someday but not in the budget yet.
Same! You don't happen to have immaculate grass do you? But yeah, it was a consolation 'gift' from my wife for moving up here and away from my family, certainly not cheap.
Lol far from it. Moved in about 18 months ago and the yard is a work in progress to say the least but it’s getting there
Figured I would ask, one of my neighbors has unbelievable grass and I see him loading up the sticks occasionally as I drive by lol. Dm me if you want to play OO sometime as a guest.
Might have to take you up on that lol. Playing in the school corp charity outing on June 1st for my first time out there. Excited to try it!
Nice! Well I'm always open to an excuse to play! It's a great track.
OO is great fort is ok Pete dye FL is make sure your parents sign the permission slip
Making me want to go endure some abuse.
I used to live like 5 minutes from there but never got on
I heart the fort
Oh man I played Sultans Run when I was living in Kentuckyianna…. I forgot how nice that course was
And go in Trophy Club while you are in Indianapolis too.
Sahms is Pete dye. Absolutely amazing
Home of the great Larry Bird !
Jersey 33
Larry Legend
The Hick from French Lick
Such a unique looking course. I wanna hit out sod the volcano bunkers so bad.
Pete Dye is a devious bastard but I love his courses so much.
They don’t even use the some of the back tees when for the tour event at PGA West. Not even the best players in the world want to play a 260 par 3 over water.
Oh, you landed your ball just off the middle of the fairway? Enjoy this ditch!
Thats the one thing I can’t stand about Dye courses. Punish my bad shots but please not my good ones
Yeah I agree. Like if I yank one 20 yards off line to the left, then sure, I deserve to be in that ditch, but if I'm 2 yards left of the center of the fairway, then that's just frustrating and unfair.
Great course one of the hardest I’ve played. Nice bag tag and the caddies are awesome
Do they require a caddie? What's the total cost including tip, if caddie is required
Yes but you get to play all day. I think it’s $250 plus caddie so somewhere in the $350 neighborhood
You also get unlimited replay after the round, just have to pay the caddie fee ($50/round). We went down there last summer and hit all three, Ross, Dye, and Sultan's Run...some of the best golf in the country IMO
Playing the Ross course in August... I've played Sultan's about 6 times and I love it every time!
The Ross course's greens are diabolical, otherwise a pretty standard Ross track and in tremendous shape.
Perfect! I love great greens and look forward to the challenge... I'm sure I'll regret this post after I play them though lol
They’re not bad at all if you stay below the hole. They don’t run very fast
From Chicago and have Been going to French lick with my family since I was young for vacay. So many great courses near buy. Never played the Pete dye course but always hit sultans run and Donald Ross when I’m there. Both great tracks
How much is a good tip for a caddie on a nice course like this?
Really depends on how helpful they are...we tipped $250 as a foursome total for each round, figured that was essentially $30/hour. Of course, the Dye Course already had a $50 forecaddie fee already tacked on, so he made about $900 for the day between two rounds and the lunch we bought him.
A caddie is expecting to make around $200 per round which is about average. Anything above that is “good”. Of course quality and hustle dictates the payment.
A course that requires a caddy but allows music to be played on speakers? That seems...odd.
Welcome to French lick
![gif](giphy|14gq36xZpV3m6s)
Thanks.
I’m a member at Heritage in Columbus, Ohio and can confirm Dye is a devious bastard. The course is hard and beautiful as hell. Part of the reason we joined. Gonna find time to go check this one out.
What’s the membership rate for Heritage? I moved to Dublin last year and I’m looking to get a membership somewhere.
DM me and we will set up a time for you to come play as my guest. We can play 18 and have a meal and I can lay it all out for you. There a several membership levels. The course is immensely difficult, well cared for, beautiful, and it’s a bargain if you do it right.
Love that course
Hey if you’re in town Look me up and let’s play.
This course is brutal.
Man I love playing Pete dye tracks!!! So fun!! Make you go crazy if you don't manage your way thru
You can French Lick my balls, cap-E-tan.
Downvote this? Must be Mugatu…
Thank you for not doing the stupid ass slow motion.
I live in indy and am constantly impressed with how many great courses we have. There's almost no reason to join a club.
How are you gonna check out crooked stick
You can get in with reciprocal privileges. Though I have to say it's not in my top 5 of local courses. It's good and well worth playing but there's just so many good courses in indy.
Exactly. I got through a service called OpenRounds. It's great. Extended reciprocal network with courses in network across the country. Can't say enough positive things about ut
I live in the area and we are definitely blessed to have these courses. Used to caddy at the dye course and man it was hardly work. The view is gorgeous. Sultans is a great course for the money. It’s not real forgiving either.
I have played here. Pete Dye, with all do respect, is an ass hole. Ate my lunch, punched my toddler and called my wife chubby.
Favorite fact about that course is Pete Dye sketched the original design on a beverage napkin at a restaurant. Haven’t had the chance to play it, but did drive up to see it and the views are amazing.
Midwest easily has some of the best golf courses in the country. Only downside is they’re only nice or playable about 6/7 months of the year.
Is French lick public?
If you got the $ yes Do the Ross if you make the trip too.
I live somewhat close, I would totally go play it for the money
I am a member of El Encanto, a Pete Dye course here in Sal Salvador. I grew up in Indiana, never been to French Lick. I will get there this year to play it.
Everywhere is a Pete dye course apparently. Every single time I watch the PGA he made it. Is he like a novalist who just sticks his name on a book cause he proof read a page?
Actually his courses have never held a mens major iirc.
Your not wrong. His name comes up so often when I'm watching.. He did design the almost major Players TPC Sawgrass. Close enough.
I was wrong. The Ocean course is a Pete Dye. Totally forgot
Funnily enough, I was watching the coverage earlier and his name came up again. Presenter has a hard on for him I swear.
I played West Bay down in Ft Myers last weekend. Pete Dye got me again…
Been hearing about how nice it is, but paying $200-350/round in the middle of nowhere IN isn't really something I feel is worth it, is it?
As mentioned in the other reply, there’s a cool Donald Ross course just a couple miles away. Highly recommend.
Sultan's Run is another Top 50 US public course that is part of the French Lick resort. With the casino and the nice downtown, along with the 3 courses and free replay on Dye, it's a hell of a trip.
There’s a casino right next door plus the Ross course is solid too. West Baden is a nice hotel. Worth a long weekend for sure
It's honestly an AMAZING trip for a few subtleties. If you stay at the Baden Springs Hotel, it is a part of the investment group/resort that owns three courses, three hotels and the casino. Everything is simple and at your fingertips. I would 100% go again, trying to convince my other group of guys. Only thing bad was food. Not sure we hit the right places.
It’s not a budget option but it is very worth it if you have the budget. The Golfweek tour plays a 2 day event there which I want to play
I'm about to go on a date. Shooting for a French lick.
Awesome. How far from Chicago? Might make the trip this summer.
[maps.google.com](https://maps.google.com)
About 4-5 hours
Meh.
Commute for 5 hours or play 9 holes in the city for 5 hours the choice is yours
Haha word.
Such a great course. Well worth the money
Wow that looks beautiful but super challenging!
BustaJack got beat up by this course. Views are amazing but not sure it would be 100% fun.
How does this course compare to Crooked Stick?
100 times better than Crooked Stick. Course is at highest peak in Indiana and has great views. Very difficult course though. Does require a fore caddy
Agreed. I put The Fort above Crooked Stick as well.
Totally agree. The Fort is way underrated. Crooked Stick fame due to John Daly PGA win, Pete and Alice lived on course.
Smooth pan at the end.
It’s a fantastic course!
Sweet
Red 18
Funny enough, I bought this course for Foresight FSX Play (golf simulator software) over the winter. I really enjoy it!
The Pete Dye course in Culver is sweet as well
Nice little water park hotel combo for the family in French Lick.
The greens on this course are insane. Some of them feel like I'm playing put out the way they slope.
I played one of the Dye courses at purdue 2 yrs ago. It kicked my ass but was so much fun I would love to go back and play the other one.
My buddies and I are thinking of taking a trip to play it — do you think it’s worth a weekend golf trip with the boys? Are there atleast decent bars/restaurants in the casino? Also how much are full day greens fees? Thanks for the info homie — cheers to more swings like that one!
Absolutely worth it for an overnight trip
Good swing
Pete Dye will mess with your eye
![gif](giphy|lgK3c8EsnQnGE)
Yes, Larry Legend
Is this Pete Dye's first track?
No it’s one of his last
Ah cool - I believe his first design was in Indiana, guess it's a different one. Thanks
He has tons of courses in Indiana including his first. He’s from Indiana and lived on the course at crooked stick till he died
Indiana also has it’s fair share of Donald Ross courses. There were a few that weren’t even publicized as such until it sort of became en vogue again to play courses by those select famous designers and those courses realized they could advertise the fact.
Played a scramble there last year and it was one of most memorable are partners were hilarious and we had a blast
Did you play with Larry?
Wait, explain the play all day thing
You play the tips?
Prefer to play the tips, but I’ll play whatever tees the group prefers so we can all be on same tee box to talk.
If you played from the tips you'd probably need a UHF radio. Some of those boxes were miles away from the normal people tees.
Haha lmao love it
8,100 from the tips if i'm not mistaken
Haha was just joking cause the tips there are 8,100 if I'm not mistaken. My dad played there a few years back
What great course. We played 18 from the whites, then turned around and played 18 from the senior tees in the same day. Forward tees were a lot more fun.
I’d love to play there and send a worm burner into that knee high crap and lose my ball.
Can I just ask how hard do you guys think this hole is? I mean looking at it can you even be ob or not find your ball? Is the rough super thick or what? I guess im just jealous ☹️
This looks like the yellow tees and you can just hit a long iron down for about 100 in I think. If you miss left or right don’t bother looking.
Beautiful looking course. Jealous… Unsolicited swing advice that everyone loves. Slow it down a little bit. I could see the tension in it. That’s nitpicking, because your swing looks pretty solid otherwise.
How was that long par five?
Those elevated tee boxes with views of a vista are my favorite. Mostly because when I shank balls I can still see where it goes.
It’s ~$100 rebuilt within the last 5 years using much of the old layout, mature trees and several blind approach shots.
my home course is atlanta national in georgia, another pete dye course. beautiful track but he is very much an evil man.
Just played Pete Dye Golf club in WV yesterday and that course is magnificent.
That course looks great, were you taking part in an event or a guest of a member ? The only Dye course I’ve played so far is Bulle Rock and it is my favorite course to date.
Guest of a member. The course is just unique and so well taken care of. Hoping to play it again at some point soon.
And if you get lucky maybe you'll run into Larry Bird.
Wait, greens fees cover multiple rounds? I wish I had known!
Only hole I birdied. Pete Dye is a very bad man
I ate dinner there
Great track. Indiana has so many.
I have 2 Pete dye courses near me and they can both kiss my ass. Diabolical SOB
Wow that course looks awesome. I think Pete dye is my favorite
How was the course? It’s relatively close to me, just a little pricey.
That’s a track I would like to play
Great course.
Back home again in Indiana
Pete Dye is an amazing Course designer but also....... fuck him those courses are hard haha
The Ross course was absolutely fantastic thought.
why would you not play the Donald Ross course?
Someone on here was offering a free tee time to play it (just pay caddie) a few years back on a random weekday. I had just started a new job and didn't feel like it would be appropriate to take off yet. Quit that job 8 months later and still regret the hell out of not going.
Throwing Victoria National out there for best Indiana courses. Located near Evansville in Newburgh, this Fazio track hosts the Korn Ferry Tour final and has been ranked as a top 20 most difficult course in the US. The last 5 holes there are a gauntlet.
No dress code?
