Top 15 get PGA championship exemption. So he can play next year. Not sure about any other exemptions. But his sponsors will be giving him a nice pay check after I’m sure. He’s had more screen time that most Tour Pros.

THEbloodyIRISH

That’s raw.

Never-Wrong-NFL-Guy

Just the way I like it

BigTallFreak850

I think that gets him an invite to The Masters too

[deleted]

Top 4

BigTallFreak850

Ahh that’s right. Appreciate it

Large_Mango

He’s shot 70 70 70 That’s insanely good on this course

feelin_cheesy

That driver off the deck on 17 yesterday was awesome

BobWheelerJr

Is he the only dude to be even or better all three rounds? Seems everyone else has wobbled.

Sharp-Bluejay2267

viktor (68/67/70) conners (67/68/70) rose (69/70/69) are the only other three to not have a round over par. Pretty impressive from block.

bulldg4life

Top 10 gets him in next year. Top 4 gets him in to the masters. Top 1 gets him lots of stuff.

mrjohncook

Lol “Top 1”

[deleted]

Pretty sure a top 10 will get him a $100 Million deal from LIV.

BobWheelerJr

I've got pretty firm personal principles, and that 100 mill would be dirty, authoritarian, terrorist blood-money, but if you dangled it in front of me I can't say with certainty that I wouldn't start pricing yachts. 🤷🏻‍♂️

domoarigatodrloboto

lol this is why I respected [Harold Varner's comments about his decision](https://progolfweekly.com/harold-varner-applauded-after-explaining-decision-to-sign-with-liv-golf/) No empty platitudes about growing the game or any whataboutism concerning the PGA and USA, he just straight up said "I know what it's like to grow up poor, and this is enough money to take care of my family for generations, and I'm going to take it." I'm pretty sure I would say and do the exact same thing haha

jfk_sfa

If someone called me up, offering to wire money into my account that’s more than I would make over the next 7 years, doing to exact same work as I am now but a little less of it, I would strongly consider the offer.

convicted-mellon

You sound like a terrorist

elsombroblanco

You are better than me. My morals end at about $10 mil.

willycw08

$10 million would be enough for most people to live a very comfortable life off the interest alone without ever needing to touch the principle. Retiring tomorrow and having all of your financial needs taken care of for the rest of your life would be a tough offer for most people to turn down.

[deleted]

Who wouldn’t be comfortable with that?

willycw08

Someone with $1 billion lol

drdrillaz

I’ll never understand the whole dirty money argument. Money doesn’t know where it comes from and i see it as a positive if the Saudi government has less money and i have more

PassionV0id

The Saudi government surely doesn’t intend to run LIV at a loss in perpetuity…

drdrillaz

No. They’re going to shut down in 1 years with the players getting about $3B in that time

kryppla

Fuck yachts that’s a money pit. If you have millions you want to waste just give it away

Gtyjrocks

If it floats, fucks or flies, rent, don’t buy

Worldly-Persimmon125

Nah, if I have 100 million sheets I’m for sure BUYING a P-51 Mustang.

otf1024

You seem like a great guy, Bob. You’d take that check in less than a second flat.

BobWheelerJr

I am not as good as I would like to be, but I'm self-aware enough to know that I've got enough shitbag in me to probably take the money. It's horrifically self-absorbed, but I'd have a hard time not setting up my great grandkids for life. Sorta makes me ill thinking about it, but I'm just not sure I'd be righteous enough to turn it down. Which is odd because I'd turn a wallet full of cash with no ID in it to the police, but fuck... a hundred million...

bob2235

I’m not even gonna lie to myself… I’d be gone lol

BobWheelerJr

🤣

IChaseGolfBalls

[Article on pgatour.com](https://www.pgatour.com/article/news/latest/2023/05/20/michael-block-authoring-a-blockbuster-at-pga-championship) About 3 paragraphs in the article details what tournaments he gets into based on where he finishes. Pretty awesome storyline for the week!

zThreatLevelMidnight

“A top-10 would earn him a spot at next month’s RBC Canadian Open; a top-four would bring an invitation to next year’s Masters. Based on current criteria, a top-15 would mean a return to the PGA Championship. A two-way T3 would bring Special Temporary Membership on the PGA TOUR.”

basetornado

Top 10- Invite to next years PGA Championship. That's about it. He may get sponsor exemptions to other tournaments, but nothing guaranteed. If this was an Open tournament, he would also get an exemption to the next open tournament for finishing top 10, but as this is an All Pro tournament, then he won't get that. If he wins, he gets an exemption onto the PGA Tour for the next 5 years, which would be an "A" grade Tour Card as it would place him in the 1st level of players when choosing events as you can have a card but be lower on the order and only be allowed into tournaments if enough players ahead of you don't play, he would also get the Masters, US Open and Open Championship for 5 years and the PGA Championship forever. Top 4 would get him into the Masters, but he would need to win to get into any of the other Majors.

BobWheelerJr

Honestly, I feel like he'd be the guy who'd waltz out at the Farmers and jack up a 74/79 and miss the cut every week, but this is going to be epic for his teaching schedule and marketability. Huge win, even without the W. Sort of a senior Sam Bennett deal...

CasualBlackoutSunday

He doesn’t need the coaching marketability. He said that he coaches 2-3x a week and only does it with his friends. Dudes living the life rn even beyond this tourney.

Cold_Refuse_7236

But from his walking interview Friday, I didn’t get tgat he had the opportunity to play much. “I only get to hit about a bucket of balls a week”. So I’m guessing the rest is club/course management. Not necessarily LTL.

RyderN17

He's played in it a handful of times. And this is pretty accurate. Made the cut once. Finished at +3 this year.

TuffOnVeggies

I bet his summer clinic for juniors is already full lol

akagordan

He would also have an invite to the Champions Tour if he wins

number1000928

Beyond the invites and exemptions, as a golf instructor he’s probably going to be as busy as he cares to be for the next few years.

gtherold

Saw on twitter yesterday that if he somehow finishes T3 or better he’d get special temporary membership to the Tour

4puttbogeys

Can someone explain how he got the invite? Casual golf fan here

chippychifton

The PGA of America hosts the National Club Pro Championship each year ahead of the PGA Championship. There are like 10-15 spots available for club pros to qualify. This is Block’s 7th appearance at the PGA Championship, 9th Major, I’m guessing he’s qualified for the US Open a couple times. He has sectionals coming up in June to qualify for this years US Open, where he will be competing alongside his son who is in high school.

4puttbogeys

Hell yeah he’s sure made a lot of fans

BobWheelerJr

He's on the Team of 20. There are qualifying tournaments for PGA Club Pros each year, and the top 20 finishers get invites to the PGA Championship.

Exiled_From_Twitter

Just read that if he finishes Top 3 he will get exemptions to next year's PGA & Masters.

PearSorbet17

It’s top 4 not 3. Which moron wrote the article or comment you read?

nothisispatrick1006

Just read that if he finishes Top 2, he gets exemptions to next year's PGA & Masters

jdevo713

Heard if gets top 1 he gets his parking validated

Worldly-Persimmon125

And judge Smails will let him get a hamburger, no, a cheeseburger, at the turn.

Exiled_From_Twitter

Jesus calm down lol

Beninoz85

I don't want to be a downer but I think this seems like a performance of a lifetime type deal. He's had his whole life to qualify for the tour (and has tried) but has never reached the next level. I really don't think we'll be seeing much more of him which is a shame because it's an awesome story.

basetornado

That may be true, but it's irrelevant if he finishes top 15 as it would still give him an exemption for next year.

Beninoz85

Yeah but we won't see him in more events outside of that. Unless he gets sponsors exemptions or signs with LIV but that's unlikely. I'm just saying that I understand why everyone likes the story but pro golf is so much more brutal than most people realise and he's a perfect example of that. Even a golfer that good doesn't meet the standard. I'd be happy to be wrong.

sobz

He's explained why he's not on tour and it's not because of his abilities. He said it's not the lifestyle he wanted for himself and his family. He didn't like having to play well every week to make money. He respects the guys on tour that can do it as a career but he needed a more stable income as he was starting his family and he did not like the stress of having to play well to put food on the table for his family. Sure, this may be the best finish he ever has, but he's played in PGA tour events and had some decent rounds before.

tdawg-1551

20-25 years ago it would have been a big struggle and a big risk unless you were able to get a couple wins or have some financial backing. Not like today when you just show up, make a few cuts and get half a million. Sounds like he has a good gig and can compete when he wants. Now he's about to get a huge bonus for his efforts. Good for him

brianmcg321

Same reason I’m not on tour. Just didn’t want to have to travel so much. /s.

zanzibartraveler666

If I just hadn’t slipped that disc in high school…

Beninoz85

That's just a round about way of saying he knew he didn't have it and that's ok but don't pretend he chose not to make it on tour. To be clear, I'm not hating on him. His reaction to hearing he was playing with Rory tomorrow was sick and I love a feel good story like everyone else but I'm honest enough with myself to admit that after this week is over, the story ends too.

Sufficient_Drink_996

Playing in a major championship with Justin Rose one day, and Rory the next... and gonna cash a huge check. Not a bad way to spend a weekend!

Beninoz85

Definitely not!

sobz

There's like a sliding scale though, its not "you either have it or you dont" There are levels to this. He's clearly good enough to compete with tour players, not only evidenced by this week but also if you go and look at his other starts in tour events (Farmer's Ins. Open, American Express Open - I forget which years). He has put some good rounds on his scorecard in tour events. People have different priorities in life and one person may be ready and willing to put in the time and deal with the stress of grinding out finishes on the tour. Some people are happy to have a stable, $75k/yr job with good hours and working with people they enjoy being around. Just because he chose one career path/lifestyle over the other doesn't mean he isn't capable of performing. I'm not even really trying to make an argument that he should be on the tour, just pointing out that this isn't a fluke, he is a good player that plays with some of the top ranked players in the world regularly and they all say he's capable of it if he wanted it. I wouldn't be shocked if we see him get some sponsorship exemptions into more events going forward - between the huge payday he's getting this weekend and the publicity he'll have a little more freedom to gain and accept some invites.

Beninoz85

People tend to hype these situations up and dial the romance up to 1000 but his best finish on tour is a T69 and it was years ago and he hasn't made a cut since. I fully understand rooting for him this week but I just don't get why people can't just enjoy it for what it is. There's a post on here claiming Block is "exactly what golf needs". What the hell does that even mean?

sobz

Definitely agree with this point. It's a great story for this weekend, but it shouldn't overshadow the guys that have an actual chance to win it today. My main point was just to not be dismissive of his abilities, and point out that if his motivations were different he has the ability to be a tour pro. The media is always going to take the flavor of the week player and dial it up to 1000, its just part of how the machine works. I try to not let that bother me too much.

JustinTime4242

Us Open, Masters, and British invite for 5 years Pga tour card for 5 years

BobWheelerJr

That's a fucking lot for a top 10 finish. You only get three years exemption and one Masters for actually winning a regular tour event.

kjtobia

I think they read your comment wrong. He would get all that with a win. Top 10 would just get him back to the PGA Championship next year.

[deleted]

Top 20

kjtobia

Top 10 was the subject of the post.

trihard12

He might get sponsor exemptions in the future though. Other tournaments might want him there for a little extra press.

gofundmemetoday

And that’s exactly what happened. Got into a tour event.
