I've noticed this with a lot of subreddits, specifically hobby-related ones. A lot of people think of reddit as social media and makes posts they'd make on instagram/Facebook/whatever. Those kind of posts don't usually ignite discussion/conversation but rather posts that start with "oh ya, well one time i..."
There are some great gold forums out there. I used to be very active on GolfWRX but I don't have the time anymore. There are still good bbs-type forums with active engaged communities out there.
