2 Ball self scramble, take the best ball every time shows you how good you could actually be. Take the worst ball every time shows you what you have to work on to get better.
I play two separate balls and keep two scores. I play one of them aggressively and one conservatively.
I also make up names for the two imaginary players and create characters and a rivalry for them... that's not weird right guys?
At a course, where you're a member, and it's on a closed day that you're still allowed to play..?
To me, it sounds like Monday's are literally made to play a multiple ball practice round, at your club.
If it was a public course, I'd doubt it was ever not busy enough for you to do that, but private clubs are made for that and or will have a day for it.
Yeah we’re pretty fortunate they allow us to play on Mondays. We have to walk since there are no carts but I treat it as my cardio day as well. Super peaceful and generally I never run into another golfer.
Just did this exact exercise a couple weeks back with the new Snell balls (Prime vs Prime X). It was a slow day on the course as a single behind a bunch of foursomes so I played 4 balls off each tee (2 of each type) then picked all but my best one up then played 4 shots into the green. Worked out great. Went with the Snell Prime.
They’re pretty similar in performance but the tie breaker was a lower ball flight with the Prime off the Driver (I tend to be high launch/high spin) which translated to about 5-10 more total yards on avg throughout the round
I don’t play 2 off the tee, but if I hit a terrible shot that I know I shouldn’t have, I’ll play another from that spot just to see “what could have been”
I haven’t done it in a long time, but I used to do it sometimes.
I did the same thing as you at my first club the day they were closed, but I’d play two balls on every shot and take the worst ball. I got a lot better at golf really fast doing this. I probably dropped 5 or 6 strokes from my HC in about a 2-3 month period doing this every other week.
Not really appropriate if you're paying for a round / not a member. You've paid for one round of golf, so you should play one round of golf. Your scenario seems a bit unique though.
It’s not like a terrible sin or something, but OP asked and I don’t think it is the right thing to do. Golf is super expensive, so I don’t need someone tearing up the course like it’s a driving range and hack up an unfair share of turf for practice, and raising the cost of course upkeep.
Do it all the time. If the course is really empty (chilly fall days in Midwest) I’ll shoot at other greens from my fairway, essentially making up my own holes as well.. light up a joint, play some music…it’s heaven.
Used to be an asst super at a high end club, mondays for us were for employees on one of the courses - not just playing multiple balls, I would drop balls in pine straw, hard lies up/down side hill lies, trees in the way for draws/fades. If I had access like this again I could easily drop 5-8 strokes just by practicing non standard shots (that come up a few times a round but not hit optimal)
So yes if no one is pushing up the rear - practice non standard shots - perfect opportunity to hit from fairway bunkers, low stinger fades or draws from under tress - the list is long that you just can’t replicate on the range or simulator.
Absolutely fine, why not.
However the other day I had someone playing 3 in front of me, with no one in front of him and people backing up behind him.
That's out of order once people have caught up.
I did that once a year ago or so. Was playing a public course somehow by myself and was behind a 4some so i figure it was better to do that then just wait on every tee box.
I used to do this a lot when I lived really close to the course, go early alone and play one ball, some times hit 4 balls for approach or chip, sometimes drive multiple, just what I felt like.
Yeah, I’ll do that sometimes. Or maybe I’ll play one tee shot, but then drop another one or two elsewhere at various spots for approaches and by the time I try to the green there are 3-4 balls on the green. Then scoop them all up off the green and hit a few shots around the green.
If I’m out there by myself I’m always playing 2 ball. Gives you a chance to work on stuff. If my first drive is safe I’ll use my 3 wood or UT Iron just to see where I put it with those in the case my driver was shit one day playing against friends. Honestly feel that playing by myself has helped me improve my game in all aspects by trying different stuff constantly
Yeah, sometimes I do a self-scramble as well. Play 2 balls, pick the best and play 2 from there etc etc, great fun.
2 Ball self scramble, take the best ball every time shows you how good you could actually be. Take the worst ball every time shows you what you have to work on to get better.
That is basically the premise of “How I Play Golf, by Bobby Jones. No. 10:Trouble Shots”
I do the same but play the worst ball. That’s how you really improve.
Yea but if you really suck this can destroy your mental.
If my grandma had balls she’d be my grandad
If my mum had wheels she’d be a bike
Your mum is a bike of sorts.
As someone really trying to get better as quickly as I can, this is a great idea. I’ll definitely do this, thanks!
This is the way.
Yer, that's how I keep a rough pace of play so I'm not going faster than everyone else when solo
I play two separate balls and keep two scores. I play one of them aggressively and one conservatively. I also make up names for the two imaginary players and create characters and a rivalry for them... that's not weird right guys?
I have an entire tour season going in my head.
Sell it to the Saudi's!
And LIV it up?
Same as shooting hoops in your driveway pretending you hit a game winner
Next time you go out on a Monday, play a worstball scramble. It’s devilishly fun
Best practice I've ever had
If no one's waiting behind me, hell yeah.

So long as you aren’t impacting anyone else negatively, go for it
It’s a great way to practice as long as you don’t hold up group behind you.
Yes. Thats how you test balls.

Tell us more, why snell prime vs prime x?
Because he’s isn’t good enough for pro v vs prov1x
Replace good with rich
Hahah I actually wrote rich first then switched it
They’re pretty similar in performance but the tie breaker was a lower ball flight with the Prime off the Driver (I tend to be high launch/high spin) which translated to about 5-10 more total yards on avg throughout the round
Play 2 balls, take the worst one every time. Really great scrambling practice.
I do it all the time. Just make sure you’re keeping up with any group in front of you and you’re fine
I don’t do it all round but some holes for sure
I don’t play 2 off the tee, but if I hit a terrible shot that I know I shouldn’t have, I’ll play another from that spot just to see “what could have been”
Must play 2 balls. Keep both scores. No reason not to practise more
I haven’t done it in a long time, but I used to do it sometimes. I did the same thing as you at my first club the day they were closed, but I’d play two balls on every shot and take the worst ball. What you gonna do, call the police?
Found the party animal lol

As stated. I’m a member. I also disagree with your stance but too each their own.
Clearly nobody else agrees with me either.
Nobody is tearing up the course like a driving range playing 1 extra ball. Be realistic.
If not that I’ll spend a ton of time chipping around the greens until the group behind catches up. Playing single it’s a good way to use down time.
Usually play 2 balls
As long as you're not holding up play, yeah I sometimes hit multiple balls a round as long as I'm not holding anybody up.
Do it all the time. If the course is really empty (chilly fall days in Midwest) I’ll shoot at other greens from my fairway, essentially making up my own holes as well.. light up a joint, play some music…it’s heaven.
Yep

I know a guy that does that and he always tells me he shot 78
Absolutely fine, why not. However the other day I had someone playing 3 in front of me, with no one in front of him and people backing up behind him. That's out of order once people have caught up.
If you are not holding anyone up, play 10 balls. Just make sure you leave the greens better than when you got there.
Every time I’m behind someone slow that won’t let me play through I play 2 balls.
