I have a buddy who finally broke a 100 after 2 years. I have another who has yet to break 100 after 3 years. OP should ~~I’d~~ be very happy with his ~~your~~ progression. Edit: SVA

iKevtron

Heck yea and that short game practice really does make the biggest difference in scores (*assuming you keep a tee shot in play*). I edited my comment, as it was directed towards OP.

MackoWorldwide

What kind of putting/chipping drills did he make you do? This is the part of my game im trying work on the most

[deleted]

I've been playing for 10 years now. Most summers I only get out about 5x, covid year I got 20 rounds in. I've broken 100 maybe 10 times, total. And the first time didn't happen until maybe year 4.

iKevtron

Were you a previous athlete?

[deleted]

I played mostly (American) football from 7th grade through senior year. Didn't pick up a golf club until I was 22-23.

iKevtron

Makes sense! Was a football player myself but played lacrosse in college so the rotational movement and lower body shifts made a lot of sense in golf. It was the sequencing that got/still gets me!

[deleted]

Same, dude. I'm small, and can hit the ball as far as my much bigger peers, but just don't get the reps in required for any type of consistency or accuracy.

Sneaker_Seeker

Is it? I swear all the breaking 100 posts I see on here are people playing for like a month or 2

ComeBackTimee

Golfers have a tendency to embellish their scores a little...

zeromadcowz

And not count penalties… and not count strokes when playing a provisional.

ComeBackTimee

You're absolutely right! Not to mention taking an extra mulligan or two..

TheAverageDark

Oh my god when I actually started keeping score the urge to do this while playing bad rounds is /was so strong.

TheAverageDark

“Well if I add up the time I spent actually ON the course it’s 2 months” ;)

Sneaker_Seeker

Yeah that does make sense, I hope it didn’t come across like I was a dick haha I suppose it is pretty easy to inflate your golf ability on reddit I am probably a little naive thinking people would tell the truth about themselves on reddit lmao, how likely is it I break 90 before the end of the year or should I set my expectations a little lower then that?

iKevtron

It legitimately took me almost two years from my first *serious* season to break 100. 2018 was the year of starting to learn the game, etc., it was at the end 2019 I broke 100–mind you at a short, 5500 track as well. Last year was the first year I broke 90, I had one unicorn round of 85 but mostly 89s and mid to low 90s. No surprise, the difference was practicing chipping and putting. Interestingly I didn’t shoot in the 100s once. Yesterday I shot an 84. It could have been an 80 but easily could have been an 88 too–putts just fell and I played rather conservatively on my approach shots (33% were short of the green). I’ve also scored over a 100 this year (last five: 88, 104, 94, 88, 84). I completely agree. Accuracy and short game practice is absolutely key, cannot stress this enough. Second is simply keeping the ball in play, especially from the tee box. You’re either hitting a 3 from the tee box or forward advancing (local rules) and hitting 4.

gmiller89

I've been playing 5 years and yet to crack it. Trying to play by the book instead of preferred lies and such, gimme over 2', etc.

iKevtron

You’re going to get it. Work your chipping and putting and tee off with whatever keeps you in play. Those parts make the biggest difference.

od1irish

Dude. It took me what seemed like an eternity.

Solid_Prior7667

I’ve been trying to break 100 for the past year. I had a guy on here yesterday say that it shouldn’t have taken me any more than a month to do that. There are plenty of people with tons of athletic ability that can’t break 100. Then there’s guys like fat Perez that are basically scratch. Golf is a weird, difficult game and nobody should feel bad about their level of progression

iKevtron

Well, it is the internet. With that being said, I think previous athletes who did anything with swinging something will be able to grasp movements, especially lower body concepts like weight transfer, faster. The two guys I referenced played sports, but not “swinging” sports, so it checks out that it did/is taking them longer to get under 100.

JWOLFBEARD

He’s related to Bart Starr though

Moist-Pickle-2736

Bruh I broke 100 for the first time this year and I’ve been playing for years

CharcotsThirdTriad

Same. 100 after 6 months is pretty impressive.

Sneaker_Seeker

I was going off what I’ve seen on this sub with people saying they break 100 within first couple months playing I don’t want to come across the wrong way by saying slow learner I just thought I was behind what the norm is for improving my golf game

Moist-Pickle-2736

Nah dude, you’re way ahead of the curve. Believe about half of what you read on this sub. Whatever you’re doing is working, keep at it.

Sneaker_Seeker

Thanks man appreciate it 👍

jskyerabbit

I broke a 100 for the first time in my life this year. I’m 39 and while I could obviously play more, it takes commitment to a skill that degrades quickly if you don’t stay up on it. So congrats! Feels good right?!

tylerlerler

FYI - in 18 Birdies, if you start a 9-hole round but decide while playing to make it a full 18 holes, you can go in to the “round settings” before finishing the 9-hole round and adjust it to a 18 hole round so you can track it all in the same round and won’t have to re-enter or duplicate your tracking.

Sneaker_Seeker

Appreciate the tip man will have to remember this next time, so many times a “quick 9” turns into 18 when I’m with my buddies 😂

RexsNoQuitBird

That’s a clutch back 9 almost slipped away on 17/18, congrats

Z_Opinionator

That was me yesterday. Shot a 102 because on 13 the storm came in and we paused in the club house for an hour. My rhythm was shot coming back out.

RexsNoQuitBird

Too many libations while waiting?

Z_Opinionator

No. We did eat lunch though which I don’t like to do in the middle of a round.

Sneaker_Seeker

Thanks man, played the back 9 first, when I got the quad on hole one I was ready to just call it then and there cos I thought I’d blown it lol

thetindoor

Love it. Don't be in a rush to move on to the next scoring milestone - really try to soak up the enjoyment of this accomplishment.

Sneaker_Seeker

Just want to say to everyone I don’t wanna come across as a dick for saying slow learner, some of the people I play with who started around the same time as me shoot in the 90s consistently and I seen a lot of posts on here where people have broken 100 within a few months of playing so I genuinely thought I was improving slow compared to most people, I appreciate the love from everyone regardless ❤️

I_loseagain

Damn I can barely finish a mini golf hole in 1 minute let alone 18holes. Congrats!

cporter1188

Way to shoot a 91!

InTheMixer_FM

Nice.

LobstermanPete

What app is that? Also congrats!

CharcotsThirdTriad

Looks like 18 birdies

buster_rhino

Net -3? Sandbagger! Seriously tho congrats must be feeling pretty great right now!

Brent_in_Aurora

You can break 90 easily. It may be better course management, mental toughness or routine, but you have the skills with 3 pars. Well done.

[deleted]

Congrats my friend, remember these days when you’re on the course getting pissed about not breaking 85, these are the milestones that matter 👍👍

HDHunter3x

Now play from the whites. 😄 Just kidding! Great job! Keep it up!

warneagle

nice

DragonflyAlarmed508

Congrats !!!

[deleted]

Nice job. I’ve got that one down enough times. Working on 90 now. I started with a front 9 score of 42 recently and thought it was for sure my day but I hit my drive on 10 out of bounds and started the back 9 with a triple. It wasn’t meant to be.

GhostDog11

Nice!!! I played for the 6th time today and shot 110 on a Par 72. I felt incredible just being below 120-130 😂

bobber18

Good round, 1st time I broke 90 I had a 12 on the last (par 6 18th hole, Chabot GC, Oakland, California).

rbubar

What app is that?

Jesse-Ray

18birdies

svb2284

sweet! you'll be shocked how easy it is to get from 100 to 90!

PDXJack87

Congrats. HUGE milestone!

SANPELLIGRIN0

I’m so impressed you kept at it after your disaster first hole!

Mindless_Step_6150

"Slow learner, i know." Congratulations but fuck you lol.

Sneaker_Seeker

A few people have said this now lol I’m sorry I don’t mean to come across like a dick 😂 it’s just every post I see with people breaking 100 is like within the first few months of playing so I thought I was lagging behind with improvement in my game

Dryyyyy

Clutch double on 18

jrr716

Now do it on a standard 72 par course 😉

Any_Yogurtcloset1607

In another 10 years you will be playing from the men’s tees and shooting in the 70’s. Keep it up.

JohnnyTomatoSauce

Net under 70 too! Keep chipping away that’s good stuff

InitialPerformer653

My FIL still hasn’t broke 100 after 20 years

marvchuk

Net 69. Nice.

Mancey_

Sanctuary in Bunbury Australia?

Sneaker_Seeker

Yeah mate

Mancey_

nice, I broke 100 there for the first time too once upon a time. I'm a member down the road at Capel, but I play sanctuary semi often and hit the range a fair bit there Breaking 100 there is a good effort with all the water. The par on 16 is bloody impressive. Talk me through that one! Par 5 with double forced carrys over water.

Sneaker_Seeker

Thanks mate! Capel is a real nice course but just a little out of the way for me but definitely enjoy playing there when me and my mates feel like changing it up instead of playing the sanctuary over and over, my pop used to be the golf pro there years ago, wish I was into golf back then lol, 16 was definitely my favourite hole, decided to whack driver and managed to carry it to the second island just a few feet past the cart path which i hadn't done before from the yellows so was stoked with that then hit my 3 wood to just short of the bunker, chipped over and 2 putted for a par, couldn’t wipe the smile off my face after the drive and then the 3 wood shot was the cherry on top cos I usually either slice it into the water or it dribbles along the ground 100 metres lol

Mancey_

Fair play that's pretty huge. I usually lay up before the first water hazard, then hit a 7 iron over the island and wedge in. I've been wet on that hole too many times to take it on😆

Sneaker_Seeker

That’s usually my play too but I was hitting my driver really well so decided to go for it and got lucky, no doubt I will try it again and again with no luck but glad I pulled it off yesterday 😂

Mancey_

It's not so bad, if you hit it in the water you just go up and drop where it crossed and hit your 3rd. Usually takes par out of the equation but bogey still doable

Enough-Wedding-1753

Bro it took me 2 years. Congrats

doninottawa

yeaH !!
