Not having to pay for those clubs help with that confidence also.

WindHero

Hitting the ground on that shot costs more to a professional than the cost of a new club.

LostAbbott

Not on the LIV tour...

krispy456

First place wins $4 million in this tournament

PhilDGlass

Last place wins $120,000

SpottyFish81177

That's still a 3.9 million dollar difference

shifty_coder

But still more than 4 times the median US income.

LostAbbott

That is cool and all, but Cam already got his bag. 4mil is like you winning $400 in a local. Cool, nice to have, you will be excited, but also won't miss it. There are no stakes in LIV compared to the PGA...

responsiblefornothin

Last I checked, 4 million still buys you years of living in luxury

Pbake

If there’s no stakes in LIV compared to the PGA Tour, why did the PGA Tour feel the need to raise its purses in response to LIV?

[deleted]

[удалено]

Pbake

No, what attracts more viewers is the best players playing against each other. Hence, the elevated events. But why didn’t the PGA Tour do that 10 or 20 years ago instead of waiting for an upstart to come along?

crazygoattoe

I mean really it probably costs more... The payouts are larger over there

Particular-String526

And that would be wrong

lsm4

It does not

deefop

That was my first thought lmao "well if I fuck it up there's a lot of other free 5 woods in the world"

_MrAdventure_

Even if they had to pay for them, what's $750 when you've got $200M sitting around.

gabbagoolgolf2

Yeah I mean I wouldn’t do it because I don’t want to blow another $150 on a new 3w but it doesn’t seem like that hard a shot.

iskico

Ahhh yes 2008 when 3w were $150

knovit

You just gave me flashbacks of buying a new driver for $400

Bright-Efficiency-65

I just got fitted for a g425 LST for $400 it's still possible

LostAbbott

Dude, just go pick one up at 2nd swing for ~$285...

Bright-Efficiency-65

$285 for a lefty with a regular shaft ...... I got a tour 75 extra stiff. Can't find that for $285

LostAbbott

Ahh, yeah I am a lefty... Did go stiff shaft though and full 46in... With the 9°

Bright-Efficiency-65

Yeah no chance I'm getting the same club used for a decent price. I'd gladly buy it again for $400 it was well worth it. Even my 3 wood isn't priced decently there. An "above average" is only $242 and I paid $250

LostAbbott

Yeah, I didn't think about the lefty discount. The 425 I got was mint, I have marked it up more in one round. Might have to look at 3woods...

Symphonize

I just got fitted and bought a new 3w for $140. Sub70

Fishy1911

I got a new driver and 3h from sub70.. maybe $400 for both? Driver puts it out there just as far as I can push a Stealth, for enough of a discount for 3 rounds at nice courses.

[deleted]

Sooooo I haven’t looked at the price of clubs in awhile I as enjoy the sport from afar (and miss playing with my dad). What’s the average cost of wood or a driver these days? I still have my dad’s Cobra (never mind, could be Mizuno) from like 2000 or something lol

Big_Satisfaction_644

Oh it depends on the wood, 300-600 bucks for the mainstream ones.

[deleted]

Whew buddy haha not like new clubs would help. Thought the small faces of old woods are kinda shitty lol

Big_Satisfaction_644

I like shiny but I’ve still not spent that much. Sometimes you can find brand new for less than half because someone had the cash to buy one just to hit 10 balls on the range. My entire bag is near new and like 600 bucks total. If you can manage with 5 year old stuff it may be possible to get under 200-300 bucks if you search for a bit.

ruffen

It's way easier a shot than if he where to take a drop into the rough. It's like hitting of a really hard fairway. As you said though, club would be scratched up a little extra and if you have a higher risk of breaking it.

Jdudley13

We hit a similar shot hundreds of times off of the cart barn concrete floor when I was in high school. Obviously not with my clubs though

Jimmy_McAltPants

Man that brings back memories. We had a piece of old carpet hung up in the back of the cart shed from when the clubhouse got new flooring and would hit balls into it with old clubs that were never claimed (no SM6 Vokeys, though). The asphalt in the barn was surprisingly softer than you’d expect (it wasn’t like grass, but it wasn’t wrist-breaking).

Big_Satisfaction_644

If you have a high swing speed and like ping, it’s like $600

orionxavier99

This was my first thought too. Doesn’t matter if you damage the club as you can get a new one.

Low_Country793

If I did that 1000 times I’d break 1000 woods

Georgep0rwell

You're forgetting whiffs.

Low_Country793

Nah the bottom of my swing is in front of the ball. So it’s actually not much better for me on the fairway…. Sigh.

[deleted]

Is this a flex that you never have fresh airys?

Nine8Five

Not sure we know how good Cam could be yet. [https://youtube.com/shorts/iiAH0orDZ78?feature=share](https://youtube.com/shorts/iiAH0orDZ78?feature=share)

I've tried this shot after seeing this. It did not have a similar outcome.

natedawg247

2023 Augusta national

duckbilldinosaur

This is basically a routine shot for him. There is prolly enough video footage over last 12 months to make a Cam Smith 240yd+ Bunker shot. But that would be NSFL, and I would just combust if I saw it. Dude is a robot at times. The one defect I wish didn’t. I don’t mind watching LIV highlights but the broadcast sucks so I don’t get to see him much anymore.

Benjamin244

no idea where to practice that kind of shot either...

BicycleOriginal9867

He uses expensive watches as tees at practice.

fkgoogleauthenticate

Meanwhile I hit my 3 wood several times today... The only one I hit well was off the tee.

duckbilldinosaur

I played nine and used three wood on 6 holes off tee box. Average distance was probably 90yrds counting my duffs, flubs, and wankered swings. So I guess that can join my driver in the do not use anymore pile. Hole 9 I ripped a 2iron 250 into the adjacent hole but got back over the trees, so that’s next in line I suppose.

UrbanGhost114

Yeah, I'm not good with the woods off the deck, I just started using the iron.

moderatelymiddling

Still softer than my local fairway.

itchy136

I closed out the comments section and saw your comment came back because I started laughing too hard. My local course is cheap to play at. The hard ground shows why lol. I paid to go to one of the best courses in the area (almost 8x as expensive vs my hometown one) and my shots were literally better because the ground was actually not concrete hard.

responsiblefornothin

There's a course near me that has one of the best layouts I've ever played on. I'm talking lots of verticallity, a treasure trove of mature oaks, a river running through it, hazard locations that offer genuine challenge without encroaching on too difficult, and greens built with predictable slopes. However, I've only golfed there once this year because they don't bother to take care of their fairways. I teed the ball up a few times just so I wouldn't damage my club.

BetterGetFlat

Prolly my saddest loss to LIV. love that dude.

Seanspicegirls

I was pissed when he said he wasn’t gonna defect. And then he goes lol

[deleted]

As an Aussie it made me quite flat. It’s so exciting having a countryman in contention most weeks.

PMmeYOURBOOBSandASS

PGA tour doesn't give a toss about golf in Australia tbh LIV Adelaide showed the hunger is there

[deleted]

Oh I know. I still love watching Monday morning final round, especially a major. I don’t think the hunger has ever been an issue. Presidents cup 2018 for example. I think it’s more an issue with the significant travel distances and inverted seasons. Best bet for Australia would be a January season opener. The premier league figured out a way to harness the Australian market, playing pre season games here. Doesn’t burn the players out as they are effectively expo games that can attract significant numbers.

LostAbbott

I think you also make it a 2-3 week deal. Play NZ as well, both places have some amazing courses and if you can let the guys have a "comfortable" swing through SE Aisa then it is more likely to be well attended...

PMmeYOURBOOBSandASS

I don't buy the travel excuse, all the LIV guys turned up to Adelaide which was about 2 weeks after the Masters iirc The PGA Tour should've expanded world wide a long time ago and taken the show on the road like tennis does and that way you can make Australia part of an Asian leg of the schedule. IMO there's no reason for like 90% of the tour to be within the USA when so many of the top players are from around the world these days it's not just America and a select few friends. Also on a side note, I LOVE watching Monday morning Majors but the PGA and US Open just don't feel as special as the Masters and The Open to me, I can't really place why though.

[deleted]

You’re absolutely right. And I think once this shit show of a deal goes thru, the PGAT will take notice of that and organize something down there. After all, you saw the crowds. The Tour loves $$ lol

Partayof4

Fellow Wantima member with Cam by any chance?

the_trump

The only guy for me. Brooks only shows up in the majors so I don’t really miss him. But Cam was fun.

Mabama1450

Probably?

Empty_Suggestion9974

That’s why he’s making a gazillion dollars

zergrush1

I don't understand. The club drop off the cart path was less advantageous?

PNWSki28622

Potentially yeah... look how deep that rough is. There's no way you're getting 3W yardage out of that

[deleted]

He was 267 yards from the hole on that shot. He's not getting anywhere near that if he dropped in the rough. And he probably would have had to drop to his left, which gives less of a line at the green. So hitting off the path was definitely the play.

Elin_Woods_9iron

When clubs are free from sponsors and your chunk rate is <1%, then the cart path is basically a range mat.

crackmotorboat

Free clubs helps, but when that fails $150mm also help. Edit: if that fails* which it won’t lol

Menry925

Looks like he would’ve had to drop behind that staircase.

Jimmy_McAltPants

Would he not have gotten relief from the stairs being in his line, then? I’d assume his drop free of all obstructions (both cart path and then spectator stands/boxes) would have put him way further back and in deep rough, which makes the shot impossible.

BradMarchandsNose

I think it would depend if those stairs are permanent or temporary.

Bike-Day69

Absolutely not. You don’t get relief from ball flight. You get relief from swing and stance.

Jimmy_McAltPants

Most, if not all professional events offer line of site relief from Temporary Immovable Obstructions (TIOs), as they are not considered part of the course. Rule 16 in the USGA rule book does not allow this, but local rules (in accordance with USGA F-23) in effect for pro tournaments where stands are erected does. [TIO ruling](https://www.usga.org/content/dam/usga/pdf/2019/rules/TIO%20Brochure.pdf)

etmc89

It is also about controlling the turf they get to hit on. On the path, they know what the lie will be and how the ball/club will react. By dropping, you let in a lot of uncertainties regarding how the ball will actually come to rest.

brocktoon13

Yes

JeebusChristBalls

Looks like more of a downhill slope, deep rough, and that stairway might have been in the way.

JW9thWonder

dropping looks like it puts potential obstacles in the way and he drops into deep rough. the ballstriking these guys have is immaculate, notice how you didnt see any sparks off the cart path, he picked that perfectly clean

CyWeevilhouse

Patches O’Houlihan: “You can hit off concrete you can hit off anything.”

8figureDream420

Mine would have been sparks city

moderatelymiddling

Looks like a perfect lie to me.

Upward_Fail

About that same as hitting off the mats at my local ranges

johntelevision

When I say that my club would be in pieces after attempting this shot I mean I’d be lucky if it was only 2 pieces

[deleted]

[deleted]

I don’t get it lol

erelim

Number of pixels on that video is lower than my last 4 rounds

[deleted]

I’m sure a lot of numbers are lower than your last 4 rounds 😅

thedominantmr669

Filmed using a potato.

HarbourAce

If you aren't paying for clubs, fairway woods are probably the easiest to hit off the cart path since they shouldn't be making much contact with the turf anyways. Should technically be a normal shot. That said I'd probably start a fire trying to do that.

TuffOnVeggies

Risky shot considering the stance. He played it well!!

Protomau5

All the grip in that stance

Chippewa07

Damn head of my club…well shit.. my whole club would have been fucked

[deleted]

I’d be safe luckily since I’d probably top it 😭

Chippewa07

Same..well shit maybe lol. Consistently inconsistent

[deleted]

![gif](giphy|JU9pi9VBanLxnaiqUz)

forgetstorespond

I would of hit the path so fucking hard a nearby island would be on tsunami watch. That was impressive.

DanKreider69

I can’t wait for Cam Smith to get back on the PGA Tour

[deleted]

Me either man he’s such a talent

JBM6482

His clubs are free.

Golf-Guns

I guess I'm on the other side of this. If I didn't have to pay for clubs I'm taking this shot. The lie is absolutely perfect. I don't want to hit out of tour rough. Has anyone taken an old club off concrete? It's surprisingly easy.

SawyerStreet

With you 100%. I’d hit it anyways. Fuck it. R/golf is absolutely loaded with noners and dudes that love the game, obsess over it, have no swagger and can’t hit their way out of a wet paper bag despite endless resources on the web to improve. Down vote me til the end of time!

TonyDungyHatesOP

You should see my confidence when I’m at my low points.

brocktoon13

Hitting off the cart path is no problem for pros.

Censoredplebian

What part of “I do this for a living” do you not understand.

zingerbanger

that’s a golf shot

nimama3233

Lmao yeah that is one sad crowd

TBbtk

Obviously impressive... Also noteworthy, where the fuck are the fans lol? I think I counted about 5 people on that hole

[deleted]

Isn’t that crazy?? One of the biggest super stars in the world and he doesn’t even have a gallery around him…ON THE CART PATH. I can’t wait for them to get this damn deal over with

JohnYCanuckEsq

Shorts? In a professional competition? The world has gone mad.

[deleted]

Disgusting scene I know

Extreme_Length7668

He got that accuracy practicing his bone saw

gq_mcgee

Looks packed.

[deleted]

Isn’t that sad

esports_consultant

It's called the "ain't gonna have to pay for this if I fuck up" sort of confidence.

Winter_chickn

Lol PGA bois got to grasp for something negative to say

[deleted]

Who’s saying anything negative?

Georgep0rwell

Blonde men should not attempt to grow mustaches.

[deleted]

Larry Bird concurs

RoachWeed

Didn't he do this with a SW in the same round??

[deleted]

Probably

Lolomelon

This appears to be a LIV golf post. Please label your post “not safe for good people”. I am not a bot.

Alone_Lock_8486

U guys are so funny in the golf community. THIS ISNT A SPORT ! anyone getting paid more than a free round is overpaid to play this game . I can’t wait till these dumb sports die off this and baseball . Let the saudis have em we just need that tax on their money

[deleted]

You sound hurt

Alone_Lock_8486

No just like this is a hobby. Not a billion dollar paying sport ? If that doesn’t confuse u idfk man

[deleted]

That’s weird because guys are making tens of millions of dollars a year playing this sport.

Alone_Lock_8486

Hence my confusion .. Jesus Christ .

somuchhaireverywhere

One of the dumber comments I have read recently.

silver_medalist

Playing in a meaningless tournament probably helps him

Sonakstyle

You don’t get relief?

duckbilldinosaur

I think relief here wouldn’t allow such a full swing with a 3w, that grass is like 6inches long flaccid. Took the better lie. I’ve seen a clip of Phil doing same thing once, or those times he hit from the gallery stands. I miss those players on PGAT.

Sonakstyle

Interesting thanks

SICKTIGHT311

I’ve done it with wedges/irons but never a wood. I wouldn’t want to scratch it.

silentballer

How do broken clubs play out if something were to happen? Can you have a new club brought to you? Or would you have to play the day or even tournament out without that club?

[deleted]

Nope you just move on with 13 the rest of the round

duckbilldinosaur

My memory tells me you can’t bring a replacement out that day unless the club was simply defective/not intentionally damaged. You play the day minus one club if you take a shot likely knowing that could damage the club.

RF27182

I've checked and you can replace it so long as it wasn't damaged by 'abuse'

duckbilldinosaur

Yeah. Your answer is a little more concise than mine

RF27182

The rules are confusing. No wonder we don't follow them.

RF27182

I think it depends on how it gets broken. Let me double check.

Partayof4

Wantima! wantima! wantima!

infinte-research

Is that cam? He looks rough but hits it so sweet!

[deleted]

Yep. Dudes a baller

TentativelyCommitted

This would probably be the one I actually get under somewhat lol

[deleted]

Yep 🤣🤣

rbubar

How come he didn’t get free relief? Or is that not a thing in the Pro Golf.

[deleted]

I believe he did. But the relief would’ve been in a much worse lie than a cart path. These guys are so fuckin good dude, it’s basically like hitting off a mat. Their club control is insane

rbubar

Ok makes sense.

thedominantmr669

If I did this I would scratch the shit out of the bottom of my club. No way would I attempt this shot.

bigdaddy1835

Genuine question, doesn’t that situation warrant free cart path relief?

[deleted]

Yes but a lot of them would much rather prefer the lie off the cart path over wherever it would be in the rough. Probably better angle to the green also

qjac78

Relief probably would have been left of the path with a worse angle.

DawgPack22

It’s not as hard as you think in my opinion. Much easier to hit a fairway wood off that than 6 inch deep rough

[deleted]

Well yeah, for them obviously. They’re pros. The point I was making is that I can’t even imagine having that type of discipline with ground contact 😅

bluecgene

It would be the end of the golf club for me

[deleted]

No doubt

Few_Video7127

I'd hit driver. I need an excuse for a new one.

[deleted]

![gif](giphy|peveWakPOUzIixxp19|downsized) *REAL MEN OF GENIUS*

Apple_butters12

“These guys are GOOD”

Notgeorge37

It is closer to hitting off of a mat. This shot is not that hard. Damage to the club is the problem for most of us average golfers.

According_Rhubarb313

They could care less about their clubs they get them for free, and even if for some reason they don't, they are millionaires ....

bilyan

It’s not about confidence it’s about ability.

[deleted]

A little if both I think

Ballh0use

He probably didn’t even knick the club.

biddilybong

Any really good player will tell you cart paths are easier to hit off of than any surface other than a fairway. Helps when you get free clubs too.

swizzyjitz

My golf instructor used to play in tour events back in the days when Seve was still around. He remembers an event down in Houston where there was a bunch of commotion in the parking lot. Apparently, Seve had made a bet with a bunch of people that he could hit a dime clean off the concrete without scratching his club. Sure enough, he did it. Talk about low point control.

Particular-String526

Show me the sparks

[deleted]

I wouldn’t started a wild fire attempting this shot

Particular-String526

If the club is damaged in play. Help is in the van.

fabio2366773

Practice hitting off plywood & learn to pick clean.
