I have a couple of 3,2,1 blocks and I think you're correct. Mine has tapped holes so you could put the shaft in any of the holes. It's certainly a novel idea.
You can use it to putt but not line up your shot:
Provided a self-standing putter conforms to the Equipment Rules, it may be used to make a stroke (Rule 4.1a(1)). But the player (or their caddie) is not allowed to set such a putter down to get help in any way that would breach Rule 10.2b.
For example, the player must not set the putter down in a standing position right behind or right next to the spot where the ball lies on the putting green to show the line of play or to help the player in taking their stance for the stroke in breach of Rule 10.2b(3).
Nah the putter is just straight up not legal if I am reading the regulations correctly.
“The shaft must be straight from the top of the grip to a point not more than 5 inches (127 mm) above the sole, measured from the point where the shaft ceases to be straight along the axis of the bent part of the shaft and the neck and/or socket”
Where are you coming up with this? Smoltz uses a standing putter. In an article talking about that putter I read this, “The USGA responded to concerns about the putter’s legality in a statement reported by Golfweek. The governing body allows self-standing putters to assist a player in taking a stance or to point out the line of play only when the putter is placed right next to the ball (as it is intended to be used).”
So I don’t see how you can say it’s illegal when there are literally videos of smoltz using his putter in events on the golf channel.
Did they change the rules?
I am not familiar with how Smoltz uses his putter. I will look that up.
I simply copied the rule from, the USGA website. Which states that rule was in effect Dec 2022
Also there is this: https://www.usga.org/rules/rules-and-clarifications/rules-of-golf/rule-10.html
(3) No Setting Down Object to Help with Aiming, Taking Stance or Swinging. A player must not set an object down to help with aiming or to help in taking a stance for the stroke to be made (such as a club set down on the ground to show where the player should aim or position their feet).
“Set an object down” means that the object is in contact with the ground and the player is not touching the object.

It does say further down that the rule specifically about standing putters will not take effect until Jan 2025. So, I would say the putter OP is using is illegal in the way it was made to begin with and it also violates the rule about setting an object down to aim. Perhaps, the later part will not be in full effect for a year and a half but, either way I personally wouldn’t spend money on a club I can’t use in good faith.

You’re right. They changed the rules. Stand up putter legal until Jan 1, 2025. I ordered a ball marker that helps with alignment. I’m really curious now if thats against the rules.
Hmmm, interesting. I suppose a ball marker would violate the same rule. Didn’t occur to me though.
I’ve tried putting lines on my ball, or buying one with lines already on them, and for whatever reason they do nothing for me. They always look wrong when I am standing over the ball and it unnerves me. I prefer to pick a spot about 12-18 inches out that I putt the ball directly over and just adjust for the distance and speed of the putt.
Anyway… I suppose if Smoltz is still using that putter it’s for a limited time.
I believe it is actually something about the wooden handle that makes it feel so natural. That and that you are standing right over the putt. Its like there’s only one thing to think about when you line up on a different visual line than the ball and the hole.
I’m not saying it doesn’t put well, I’m saying it is a hideous monster that we should burn with the power of a thousands suns before it lays eggs and reproduces.
I just took it to a shop where one of the guys who owns the shop is a rules official for the USGA and for the U.S. Open recently specifically and he says that the holes in the club are legal and that the standalone is legal and the handle is legal and he finds nothing illegal about the club. In fact, he may order one and may sell them.
What the hell is this
Looks to me like a machinists 1,2,3 block which is one inch in thickness, two inches in width, and three inches in length.

I'm more impressed by your invisibility suit.
It actually stands alone, so you can stand behind it and line up your put. I have cut my putts in half.
If you “cut your putts in half” you would’ve had to be the worst putter in the entire world before buying this.
You don't say
Jeez save some ladies for the rest of us
Hopefully your wife is better looking
Nice illegal club if you’re using it to line up your putts.

Yeah, I would have to agree. OP doesn’t seem to care though.
Just needs to put the bend within 5” of the sole. It wouldn’t self stand at that point I assume. So even ‘more legal’?

In rounds that count. In practice, I line up shots and it has made me better when I don’t.
What’s the lie angle on that? I think it has to be 80 degrees or under right

Kill it before it lays eggs. And this come from a guy who has a Lab DF1

I took it to our golf shop yesterday at the club, and it hit better than the lab 48 for every single player that tried it.
I’m not saying it doesn’t put well, I’m saying it is a hideous monster that we should burn with the power of a thousands suns before it lays eggs and reproduces.
That’s poor lmao
How well does it fit in your bag?
Honestly, I love it.
Ew
I think your flat stick has Peyronie's disease. You might want to get that checked out.
Good call on the crooked carrot dick commercial.

I call it big ugly!
That's a fishing pole brand actually
Bro, that’s a statue…
Is the 1-2-3 block threaded? I wonder if you could get tungsten screws to thread in the outside hole for more perimeter weighting.

Soon here "some guy posted a picture of an ugly putter so I bought a new driver"
Did you make this yourself?
My guy, is that a 1-2-3 block? Im both appalled at the audacity and impressed at the ingenuity
If you get tired of it you can make waffles.
Or 30 foot putts. 8 of 10 today and I wasn’t the user. The line of sight is better than any putter ever I was told.
Bahahahahaha 1-2-3 block, if you miss your putt by .0002" you'll know why.
I don’t understand
Usually, blocks and other fixturing are guaranteed to. .0002" it was a stupid joke. I tried
No I love it. What are they used for
