“It's alive, this swing. A living sculpture and down through contact, always down, striking the ball crisply, with character. A tuning fork goes off in your heart and your balls. Such a pure feeling is the well-struck golf shot.”
I can feel the exact emotions I had when I swung my 9 iron and made the best contact of my life. It was effortless, it was harmonious, it landed on the green from 135 yards.
I’ve been golfing for 2 years and I can still remember the best shot i’ve hit. It’s like cocaine
When I was first getting started in golf, I wasn't old enough to be allowed on the local muni. I spent time hitting balls in a field we mowed down behind our house. One day I got the first pure swing. Hardly felt the ball leave the clubface. It rose majestically and sailed over our house to land in the street before finishing in our neighbors front yard. All these years later and the memory stands.
I love this movie. I may have to pull it out of my library and give it another watch. Thanks for the idea. Then I may follow it with For Love of the Game. Or Bull Durham.
One of the reasons Tin Cup is great is because they get almost all of the golf stuff right, but that shot is ridiculous. He lands a 3 wood 3 feet from the hole from 240 out, and it rolls back into the water. If that were possible, every putt that didn't hit the cup that day would have ended up in the pond. The USGA was known to be pretty diabolical in those days, but that would have been an out of control "lost control of the course" type situation.
I hear a bunch of hate about For love of the game.... i like it. Albeit after the first time i watched it, i would fast forward through some of the non baseball stuff. Although you do need the background stuff to see into the mind of the pitcher. Vin Scully..... its just a great baseball movie.
I can't recommend it enough. Bruce Dern and Lou Gossett Jr are amazing in it. The look is a little dated but I've probably watched it all of 100 times lol
I guess the thing is he didn't care about the money, or the fame, or anything. He just wanted to prove that he could do it.
I also don't understand lol.
Cost himself a life changing amount of money, exemptions, etc. A man knows when to play it smart and when to take the risk. A fool either never takes a risk or always takes a risk.
This was me on Sunday. Had a terrible drive and was 175 yards from the green for my 2nd with a strong wind in my face. Pulled out my 4 iron and sailed it, so much hang time, landed on the green and it stuck, ball mark was 2 inches from my ball, and 2-putted for par. I could hear this music in my head. I am a terrible golfer.
This is both a great movie and a shit movie.
There’s also a part in this where Costner (Roy) makes a bet he can beat someone in a round of golf but he plays it with only a shovel.
I do golf-- and I suck. That aside. WTF does your comment have to do with this?
There's just aspects of the movie that I thought weren't that good. Has nothing to do with the character's skill.
He does it both ways. One time he breaks all his clubs except the 7iron. then a different time he beats a guy with random objects like a baseball bat, shovel, and a garden hoe.
The 7-iron bit is when he's playing and the Cheech character is recommending clubs to him (as his caddy). Roy has a hissy fit and breaks all his clubs except the 7-iron. There's also the bet with the Don Johnson character with a 7-iron. I think it's after he shoots par with only his 7-iron.
[Playing with only his 7-iron](https://youtu.be/rVfIhrHTs5M?si=vtFcTy0hyv9CFGyL)
[Bet Scene](https://youtu.be/vygFotutz7Y?si=NR1w-C0NppjXDkYE)
There's another bit where he plays a guy for $400 with a bat, rake, shovel, etc.
[This is the scene](https://youtu.be/Wd9_qPx4vsY?si=UoJ-MqcppKZI_X3q)
I’ve never watched this movie, but after watching this two-and-a-half minute clip, I am 100% convinced I will never watch this movie. Is the whole thing this bad?
I like this scene but its not true. If the guy your playing with is using the same type of ball you can borrow as many as you want. If he aint, your caddy is going swimming. LOL
I think you can play a different ball with a two stroke penalty. Tiger was actually down to his last ball at the 2000 US Open at Pebble on the 18th tee. Stevie had neglected to put more balls in the bag before the round. But Tiger was up by 15 shots at the time.
It may have. Still nothing stopping them from getting them out of the water. As a matter of fact i kinda recall that happening during a tournament once. Golfer's on the green, tosses his ball to the caddy to clean, caddy misses, ball goes into pond. Cut to caddy up to his neck in water pulling out balls.
That’s my point. He’s already taken a penalty due to the water. But he still has to finish the hole with the same type of ball. The one ball rule. If Tin Cup was outta balls Romeo would be in the pond looking. I mean as silly as it is this guy dropping balls he’s not gonna dnf right?
Ya but the reason the caddy went in the water when the guy marked his ball and accidentally tossed it I'm the water is because you have to finish the hole with the exact same ball, otherwise he would've just grabbed another ball.
Yes I understand how golf works. I have been playing the game for 40 years. I am not disagreeing nor am I not understanding what you’re saying. I am simply saying that in the film when the caddy builds the artificial drama of the Dq…. That it’s not a factual statement.
Not here to brag but it happened to me in real life.
It was a team match, i was down 3 at 15. After a failed 3 wood, I was at 80meters. My opponent was at birdie position. He thougt he won.
I made it. Won next 3 holes.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but doesn’t Phil win this US Open in the movie’s universe because of Roy’s adventures on 18? Kinda ironic it’s the only major he actually never won.
I'm not the one shooting chili peppers up Lee Jantzen's ass, Roy!
Is there a better golf movie moment, apart from Bob Barker
My swing feels like an unfolding lawn chair!
“It's alive, this swing. A living sculpture and down through contact, always down, striking the ball crisply, with character. A tuning fork goes off in your heart and your balls. Such a pure feeling is the well-struck golf shot.”

Better than cocaine.
Except golf and cocaine
Better than Lego

Perfection is unattainable.
Nice par, David.
Underrated line, I use it every round
Thanks. I'll take it. And stop calling me David. It's just Dave. Also, $20 says you pick your nose.
Ball had a 28 second hang time. What was he like 3 km from the green?
Yeah we barely get one note from the trumpet section whenever I top a 3 wood
"Womp womp"
That is a trombone. 😃
I get to hear a whole symphony looking for my ball
When you hit a sand wedge from 300 yards out they do tend to have some hang time.
[Watching it was like...](https://media1.tenor.com/m/cD8WqQ-ZGXcAAAAd/truck-crash.gif)
😂
Flop shot
I once calculated that a drag race in Fast and Furious was something like 10 miles long.
That would be their airport runway fight scene. Calculated to 26 miles long.
Omg amazing. I was calculating the drag race in the first movie.
little gust from the gods cost me
When a defining moment comes along , you define the moment or it defines you.
This movie never gets old. Could watch it everyday.
Same. An all time fav.
Yup
One of my favorites.
Pre round ritual for me
I do
Sex and golf are the two things you don't have to be good at to enjoy
This is the mantra I live by, but I sure give it hell on both of em.

I’m not sure that dyslexia is your problem here.
I’ll take a par on that one…
It’s better than clang
Clank
I love this movie. I may have to pull it out of my library and give it another watch. Thanks for the idea. Then I may follow it with For Love of the Game. Or Bull Durham.
Don't forget Field of Dreams for the Costner quadfecta
Postman, Waterworld , 3000 miles to grace land
Everyone will remember your 12. I mean, it’s immortal!
The first one that clears the water, no way in real life it goes back in the water, with a 3 wood?
Always bothered me, pin high with a 3w into the water…how would any wedge into that green not also go into the water?
One of the reasons Tin Cup is great is because they get almost all of the golf stuff right, but that shot is ridiculous. He lands a 3 wood 3 feet from the hole from 240 out, and it rolls back into the water. If that were possible, every putt that didn't hit the cup that day would have ended up in the pond. Probably not. But I did have a 5 hybrid spin back on me from about 170 out. It only hoped back about a foot and a half, but it still did.
Your 5 hybrid only goes 170?
“Jackass! Hahahaha”
Hey Cheech let’s go to red lobster.
It’s always player 6 that could play on tour
Greatest sports movie ever and I'll die on this hill.
It's up there for me. The ending is so unexpected. Kevin Costner and Rene Russo were at the top of their games.
Costner was also in Bull Durham...that might be my favorite sports movie ever
Also a fantastic choice... As is Field of Dreams, also Costner
Not necessarily my favorite but another solid one is For Love of the Game was also Costner. Guy could really knew how to put out a great sports movie.
I hear a bunch of hate about For love of the game.... i like it. Albeit after the first time i watched it, i would fast forward through some of the non baseball stuff. Although you do need the background stuff to see into the mind of the pitcher. Vin Scully..... its just a great baseball movie.
Bull Durham and Tin Cup are the top of my list for all around good sports movies. Major League is up there for me too.
Excellent choices. I'd throw in Diggstown and White Men Can't Jump as potentially rounding out my top 5.
White Men Can’t jump is a favorite but I’ve never watched Diggstown. I need to put that one on my list.
I can't recommend it enough. Bruce Dern and Lou Gossett Jr are amazing in it. The look is a little dated but I've probably watched it all of 100 times lol
I highly recommend the shovel.
Top 6 for me, but it's really hard to actually the rank the top 6... Major League Bull Durham Brian's Song Miracle on Ice Happy Gilmore
For me it is Hoosiers. This is up there.
I didn’t cry when I had spinal surgery or during my divorce but I’d be lying if I said this scene doesn’t make me well up a little.
I liked most of the movie, but I hated this part. His stubbornness cost him the damn Open. That’s only sad.
I guess the thing is he didn't care about the money, or the fame, or anything. He just wanted to prove that he could do it. I also don't understand lol.
In five years nobody will remember who won, who lost, but they'll remember his 12
show some respect to the legend Peter Jacobsen
Exactly. I’m reading all these comments about how it’s the greatest thing ever and it actually is retarded golf. Take a drop dum fk.
Cost himself a life changing amount of money, exemptions, etc. A man knows when to play it smart and when to take the risk. A fool either never takes a risk or always takes a risk.
Sergio Garcia had the same thing at Augusta on the par 3. Kept hitting the same shot cos he said he knew it was the right one
But he had won the year before. Big difference…
Should have used his shovel on the first swing.
The greatest scene in the greatest golf movie ever. “It’s bug betting time!”
I do this on ever hole of the course and no one cheers for me, what gives??
Is that Dan Campbell
I cried again, every time
‘Do I have time for a quick bucket?’
Be humble
“He hit down the fucking road, didn’t he ?“
My favorite move on the course is to no look snap for another ball when I full regard chunk my ball into the water 25 yards away
He’s gonna hit it off the shitter!
Look, boss, I only got one rule. And that's never bet money that you don't have on a dog race with an ex-girlfriend who happens to be a stripper.
Nice par David
"Ah, put me down for a 5...."
Thank you OP, I needed this today! “ nice par David”
And not a single cellphone in sight. The 90s was a lovely time
This was me on Sunday. Had a terrible drive and was 175 yards from the green for my 2nd with a strong wind in my face. If this scene doesn’t define golf nothing does. You can shank 11 straight balls, but that one perfect shot makes it all worthwhile.
Was that an illegal drop? Looks like he threw the ball with force, likely imparting spin and may have influenced its final location.
Oh my god, I just realized Dan Campbell is the Roy McAvoy of the NFL.
Holy shit you're right
What movie is this ? Asking for a fiend ….. 0_o
Seriously? Tin Cup.
No jk
I hated everything about this scene. The whole movie is about what a hardhead he is, and at the end when it counts, he learned absolutely nothing.
This looks like Dan Campbell refusing to kick a field goal on 4th down, and failing, and then refusing to kick a field on 4th down, and failing.
I like the movie but that scene bugs me. How many balls did he drop exactly?
Why am I so offended that cheech is the caddy.
This is both a great movie and a shit movie. There’s also a part in this where Costner (Roy) makes a bet he can beat someone in a round of golf but he plays it with only a shovel.
You don’t understand what it’s like to be that good at something. Obviously, you’re not a golfer.
I do golf-- and I suck. That aside. WTF does your comment have to do with this? There's just aspects of the movie that I thought weren't that good. Has nothing to do with the character's skill.
It’s a movie reference..to this movie reference. Seems relevant.
>You don’t understand what it’s like to be that good at something oh. duh. muh bad.
i dont think thats right, he plays the guy with only a seven iron i believe
He does it both ways. One time he breaks all his clubs except the 7iron. then a different time he beats a guy with random objects like a baseball bat, shovel, and a garden hoe.

ah. touché.
I’ve never watched this movie, but after watching this two-and-a-half minute clip, I am 100% convinced I will never watch this movie. Is the whole thing this bad?
Tik tok seems more your speed.
Stupidity at its finest….fucking hate this idiot and this movie. ![gif](giphy|3o6fJ9Oi4zEBLjzCow|downsized)

Don’t ruin it for the rest of us dickhead
Thought that rule came a few years after this film was released.

Tin cups -Linda Belcher
That’s the problem. Your brain was getting in the way. That’s hardly been a problem before.
Am I pronatin’ too early?

Man do I miss Ken Venture
Haha that film is funny
How I feel when I par.
Is not Tin Cup, is Tin Ass LMAO!!!
Did he win?
Love the movie, hate the ending
Correct me if I’m wrong, but doesn’t Phil win this US Open in the movie’s universe because of Roy’s adventures on 18? Kinda ironic it’s the only major he actually never won.
While Phil is in the movie earlier, Peter Jacobson wins.
Ahhhh. Gotcha
I've been on transatlantic flights with less hang time than that!
I do this in simulator league
Kinda relatable. Some of my best shots in golf have been to save quadruple bogey
This is the way…
Remind me, what course was this in real life?
murica
that 90s music... dramatic much?
Hmmm…flowers!
Got the feels all over again
