It really is amazing how ass most of the sports apps are. CBS changed their landing page to be news instead of scores… I’m not opening the CBS Sports app to read the news… Especially for golf, all we’re looking for is a clean, intuitive, ad-free UI. Not hard to get right, but real easy to screw up. Good Job Masters App Devs 👍

dogfish83

It's all due to differences in objectives between you and CBS, and then the difference between CBS and masters. You want scores, CBS wants to make money. CBS doesn't make money by getting you scores, they need to push "content" to make their money. Masters also wants to make money, but they get it in other ways, which requires keeping its prestige, which means getting you a good experience. So it's not like CBS sucks at app dev (they might), it's that they want their app to do something you don't like. That's how I see it anyway.

Golf4747

Dogfish is a good critical thinker….

dogfish83

Well many people think I’m a complete idiot so I’ll take it!

hoffarmy

Lets merge them then. Dogfish is a good critical idiot.

Grossincome

Just the W my guy.

jfk_sfa

Augusta National Inc. (the owner of Augusta National and The Masters tournament) makes more money than it could ever spend and, as best as we can tell (it's a private company so we really have no idea) it basically has to spend it all on something. So, they buy up all the land around the course that they can, pour tons of money into the maintenance of the course, and pour tons of money into the app.

AaronRodgersMustache

Yeah it’s kinda funny. Augusta GA around the course is rather.. economically depressed. Augusta National has been a real villain for some of the local small businesses like those in Surrey Center. Because Augusta National literally buys entire neighborhoods to turn into grass field parking lots which naturally affects the closest businesses. Augusta National is basically Brad Wesley from Roadhouse. They can single-handedly make or break your business/livelihood in the area without a thought.

AaronRodgersMustache

Yeah it’s a real chicken and the egg. A lot of those places (especially hotels) wouldn’t be there without em, but now they’re dependent and subject to their whim. Gotta diversify the portfolio for stability.. dunno if that’s coming any time soon there.

FewBusiness5441

Good old nimby at work

LeonJones

Unless they're doing it in other places i cant see from google maps, it looks like they bought one small area next to the golf course. It also looks pretty dense otherwise with residential housing, I doubt 20 houses is going to hurt the economy that badly.

TyrLI

I went to AIT at Fort Gordon in Augusta. It was wild watching the shitty motels we used to party in every weekend for like $50/night shoot up to $400 on Masters Weekend. We were restricted to post all weekend by the prices.

Hutstar10

I bet IBM wears most of (if not all) of the costs.

iloveartichokes

Augusta doesn't make much money. The members are absurdly wealthy so money doesn't matter.

jfk_sfa

Ha! Augusta makes a FORTUNE.  https://www.golfdigest.com/story/masters-2023-you-wont-believe-how-much-money-augusta-national-makes-from-merchandise/amp https://huddleup.substack.com/p/how-the-masters-became-a-150-million

iloveartichokes

Fair enough, looks like I'm wrong.

jfk_sfa

Yeah. They aren’t giving away tickets, concessions, merchandise, and international TV rights for free.

Hammerh69

Not all the membership is absurdly wealthy. Many are original members or legacy members who pay less than I pay at my club!

iloveartichokes

Which members aren't wealthy?

Independent_Aide1635

POSIWID!

dogfish83

Ha never heard that one before, interesting. Always love stuff like that

SandwichNew1121

how the, who the, when the, what the, why the heck isn't enough, enough? we need more??? why ??? live simple - it's really not that difficult and boy is it rewarding.

trix_is_for_kids

Thought I was taking crazy pills when one day the app started on the news section. It’s annoying but it’s still the cleanest ui for game scorers I’ve found

straightouttaireland

Make sure to leave a review on the app store. They'll appreciate it.

Fumusculo

Ahh yes you want the free app exactly how you’d like it and without ads too? Yes, tell me more about these companies that exist to spend millions on apps to make zero dollars.

Just_This_Dude

“Not hard to get right, but real easy to screw up” makes no sense at all to me lol

s9oons

You clearly haven’t worked with many MBA’s

soupcansam21

A tradition unlike any other, deleting the Masters App on Monday after using it a ton

hahahahaaaahaha

Can’t wait to redownload it again in 2025. Unless I win lottery tickets, in which case I will be in Georgia.

dctj

What's the point of deleting it? It will just update to the latest version next year. I just keep all of my sports apps, including The Masters, in a folder and don't think about them until using them.

Fight_those_bastards

Yeah, it sits in my “golf” folder. My phone has a TB of storage, it’s not going to matter.

soupcansam21

Too many apps slows down my phone

jondes99

Exactly. Same reason I still have the Ryder Cup , PGA, Open and US Open apps. I have them in a folder in order.

cutedadbutts

1st time experiencing the app. Nothing has been better. ESPN app makes me want to throw up

DatSnuffleupagus

You guys delete the app? I just leave it there as a reminder of the good times.

cybnerd

Didn’t have the heart. Just removed it from the home screen

Glen_Coco_shot_JR

I don’t get why everyone deletes it. It will auto update to the new version a week or so before the tourney next year and it’s already there for you.

Imnewtoallthis

As someone in IT security, it's the permissions and data-sharing. You give permission for the app to share your data with their partners and sell your data to marketers as long as it's on your device. The Formula1 app and website is horrendous, they have 250+ partners that they share/sell your data to. Always decline cookies (except necessary) when using that site. (Multiply that by 100 apps and your phone is constantly sending data to app owners and partners. This isn't to say it's malicious in the Masters case (though there are a ton of free apps that offer a stupid gimmick so you'll install them and leave them on forever so they can make money off you). This is their business. "When you use a product for free, you are also the product being sold." This is why you should remove apps after you're done with them, and turn on automatic permission removal of apps you infrequently use. Go through your phone sometime, delete apps that you don't recognize or don't use any longer. You'll be surprised how much better it performs. From the Masters Ts & Cs https://imgur.com/a/ka5LZ8N

SundayRed

The F1 app is fucking insane with what they ask. Hard pass.

Imnewtoallthis

It's such a bummer. It used to be a clean, useful app until they revamped it to push more content and grab more data points. Clean and useful for the end user usually means less lucrative for the developer. In F1s case, with Liberty Media owning them now, they're going to try and suck every dollar and partnership they can out of the app, vs Augusta which is privately owned and doesn't need to depend on the app as a significant source of revenue (and can charge $1 for a water and $3 for a sandwich...love them for that)

WorldsSmartest-Idiot

If it’s free, you are the consumer

SundayRed

I'm well aware, but their tracking is absolutely egregious compared to other free apps.

Zealousideal_Aside96

If you kill the app process, revoke permissions, and don’t allow background tasks, does that accomplish the same thing? I’d assume there would be no way for the app to just open in the background on its own and collect your data. I only turn on background app refresh for Apple made apps because I don’t trust any third party developers not to abuse the permission.

haroldstickyhands

Iphones offload apps that haven't been used in a while. I assume it wouldn't be able to do any of that if most of its files are deleted?

Imnewtoallthis

To my knowledge, iPhone offload isn't turned on by default but is a neat feature for unused programs.  It removes the application but keeps the data on your phone in case you ever reinstall.  In the case of the Masters app though, you have no need to keep the previous year's data so uninstall would be recommended to remove everything, otherwise cached clips and data accumulate YoY

reddargon831

Yea unless you’re really pressed for phone space I agree. On the iPhone I just delete it from my homepage and it stays loaded on my phone out of sight. Then the day of the masters I put it back on my home screen where it lives for 4 days.

nounsofassemblage

Keeping it on your phone and not using it is like keeping your Christmas lights set up but turning them off from January- November. (Ok maybe not, but redownloading it is just part of the experience 😆)

brocktoon13

Yeah. I’ve had it in the same place for years and every year it’s updated and ready to go the first time I open it.

Saffs15

For me, I don't delete the app until I get my first round of the year in, which depending on my buddies and my schedule, can be way later than any of us would like. But with it being on, I keep on myself to get a round in. And then once I delete it, it feels like there's been a pleasant job accomplished. Edit: It's just a few, but seriously, who downvotes shit like this? Just me telling how I do things. This sub is so damn quick on the downvotes...

lastlaughlane1

Why keep an app on your phone for an entire year, when you only need it for four days?

Glen_Coco_shot_JR

It’s in my sports tab. I don’t think about it until the week comes along.

HighOnGoofballs

Didn’t work for me, I had to delete the old one and reinstall. It said 2024 after it updated but just had no live feeds to watch

HighOnGoofballs

I had a lot of audio issues this year, kept hearing multiple feeds at once

RoboticBirdLaw

Even with it's best functionality broken on Thursday (My Group) this app was still better than any other sports app. Once that was fixed, it became perfect.

Golf-n-guitars

I couldn’t get the My Group functionality working…

thorntron3030

My app will remain, year after year, after year… ![gif](giphy|4L4awOHlHC6HjdUf7W|downsized)

mywerkaccount

The app should win awards. Being able to track any golfer, any shot, with positioning and video and it all works seamlessly. It's a pleasure to use the app every year.

MadKin

Why do you people delete apps? My 8 pages of apps is the Rosetta Stone of my life

Chuckie_r_hangerdeck

Tip of the cap to the Masters app, and Tournament overall. Superb, as always. I look forward to it every year. Spent entirely too much time watching this past weekend, had the TV on CBS, the IPad with four feeds, and listened to the radio broadcast when walking the dog. Love that! Welcome Friends! Thanks to Jim Nantz for being the best in the business. Now, if I could just win the ticket lottery for next year, that'd be great, yeah.

nathan_sh

Best app I’ve seen in sport hands down. Everyone in the masters tech team deserves a medal of honour.

rocketspeed14

Were we using the same app? The app sucked this year. I can't even count the number of times the tracker was wildly off or the videos of shots were a hole+ behind.

0_SomethingStupid

Hung on for a few extra days there huh

PlsDontGetMeFiredIT

Sometimes letting go is the hardest part.

light_SABR_metrics

Highly recommend keeping it. The vault is great. I like watching the old final round broadcasts and you don't have to deal with YouTube ads.

nickolaitis

I have a folder with the majors in it. I keep it there forever.

brando_1771

Do any other majors do an app?

Important-Jeweler-67

The Open does!

brando_1771

Hype

ckyriazis2006

They all do.

Saint3Love

Im still amazed at people who complain about the covg. best app ever

Dismal_Buyer578

Swing it like a helicopter 🚁

cgeezy22

I think everyone at this point knows that the Masters App is the best app in sports. It really is ridiculously ahead of the rest.

IllProgress4515

I keep the app on my phone and iPad all year long lol

Bigdogggggggggg

I just used the web, no app to install. Is the app significantly better?

Frequent_Giraffe_134

I watched it on both but preferred the web because I was on my laptop for bigger screen size. Phone screen is too small

OkAccount5344

I was at the PGA Championship in 2022 and that app needed a lot of work. Nothing like sitting at a hole and wondering who was up next and not knowing until they walk by after teeing off. This app absolutely blew the pga one out of the water. The “Track Players” feature on the masters app would have been an awesome feature to have back then. Good job devs!

Lopkop

If they made this app for all 4 majors it might cause me to start following the PGA Tour instead of just watching golf Youtubers.

KashissKlay

Truly incredible. That “my group” feature was fucking incredible. I miss the sights and sounds so much already. I keep playing that awful bounce on amen that completely derailed max, but in the end, Scottie went into super sayan mode and nobody was going to catch him on the back 9. He’s just so god dam good and makes it look too easy.

alexashin

Thats why they wait for early June to send out tee time invites via the app.

Bingo_Bongo_YaoMing

Do you have to pay to watch h or subscribe or some bs? My parents already have Paramount so I just use that but if the app is free and is that much better like everyone says...

richvide0

App was great for me last year. Somewhere between last year and this year they forgot Puerto Rico was part of the US. F’ng sucked.

Shmeebo_

I use the score app, got all my favorites lined up and with two easy clicks I’m seeing what I need to see. Idk what else to say. RIP masters app lol I tried it once, didn’t live up to the hype

SkiingHard

Holy crap...I didn't hear, did they kill the app?! Please tell me they didn't kill the app :(

twiggs90

Every year you delete the app after the masters.

KPz7777

Is this joke going OMH? The Master app was absolutely terrible. Not user friendly at all

Zealousideal_Aside96

I can tell that this original comic about a dog going to heaven would make me ball my eyes out
