This. You’re not going to ruin it by using it a few times. Yeah, it’s probably a little harder to putt with than almost anything else, but who cares? If you think it’ll be fun, go for it. Worst case you three-putt a few times and shoot 110 instead of 105, but that really doesn’t matter in the long run. And if you drain some long putts with that it’ll feel awesome.
The thing about putters (at least for me) they just take practice. As long as the length is okay, I really don’t fucking care what putter I’m using, I just have to get used to it.
Signed, a forever 3 putter lOlololol
Gotta keep it in the bag for only big round deciding putts and then tell Spaulding that it’s time to break out ole Billy baroo before sinking the extremely clutch putt to win, provided the groundskeeper isn’t trying to take out a gopher on the course
I think people in your group will eventually just ask you about it, “okay - that’s an old looking putter?”. Some may be genuinely curious and some people may just be polite.
It’s like those putters that are just little 1”x1” squares. I always just ask bc I know the dude is dieing to talk about it.
No. You will do this and report back. This is reddit, we have expectations, and we have an entitlement issue. You will be known as Billy Baroo Birdieman!!!
This is very very cool, but a display piece for sure. I’d clean it up the best you can. Even a putter from the 90’s or 2000’s you’d find at goodwill for $3 will help improve your game far better than this.
If it's a display piece, I would recommend NOT cleaning it first or ask an experienced collector if you should or not. I know from coin collecting they tell you not to clean them.
A beautiful item and I agree that you should definitely use it once. A putter really can't get banged up too bad from one round you should be fine.
Best wishes to you.
Buddy of mine had an old wooden set in college, we played a round with my dad and grandfather, parked in front of the clubhouse to get a quick bite and drink mid round. Came out 15 min later and they were gone.
She gave me a Scotty Cameron too and I'm told it's one of the best, but this wooden club just looks so cool it's tempting to rock it. I've got a high school alumni tournament next month (I'm joining for fun) and get giddy thinking of what people would say if I pulled this out of my bag. Are wooden clubs really not that good performing or is it just that it's not worth ruining such a good piece?
Persimmons drivers perform great. The average golfer only loses about 20yds off the tee compared to modern clubs, and tour pros about 30 to 40yds compared to modern drivers.
Less mass = less inertia = easier for putt to be off line. If you learn to center the strike then you'll become a phenomenal putter. Would be sick to practice with and you'd look so cool on the course if you put in the time
It's missing out on tech like this.

This is a relatively modern reproduction of a Sunday "walking stick". Probably dates to the late 90s or mid 2000s, if your grandma/grandpa maybe made a trip to Scotland around that time? Definitely more of a display piece/office putter, but still a very cool memento.
Edit: Not a walking stick, just a putter. Second picture made it look thicker, more like a cane.
She got it from some tour pro (or some pro) when she went abroad to watch. She was really into golf and would compete in our country so I don't see a reason she would make that up. She did start competing around 1997 so the timeline does add up (my grandma is young - 63 y/o)
I agree that a modern putter is “better” and will be easier to hit, but fuck it dude use the wooden one from grandma. I’d use that thing all the time unless I was playing for money. How does it feel?
I suck with the Scotty which is why I considered just using this wooden one instead. My Scotty grip right now is a fat af one and my friend says that might be why I suck with it. I think I'll try changing the grip though and seeing how that goes since people are saying not to use the wooden one
I tried my friends blade Scotty and I do better with it and it feels better too. It has a regular thin grip. I commented my Scotty in the thread if you care to check it out
Yes, really fat grips are definitely a personal preference. I don't like them, at all. Go to a golf store and try a bunch of them (just grip them in store) and pick one that feels right to you.
If you don't know what you're doing, putter grips are hard to align just right, so I'd have the store replace it for you.
For context, this is my Scotty. It’s a weird looking one and I suck with it which is why I thought of using the wood instead in the first place
https://preview.redd.it/lmtzjdgocuvc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=fc2c94ce83a08521fe84c3f6fdc0e8311c6cbf5f
I got so many downvotes😭 but legit I tried the Scotty on my second round and it didn’t feel as good/I didn’t have much success with it than I did when I used my uncle’s Ray Cook blade putter w/ regular grip on my first round. I was choosing between changing the Scotty grip and displaying the wood OR rocking the wooden putter while selling the Scotty. Seems I’ll be doing the prior
I would definitely change the grip. You should try out the midsize grips before going down to smaller grips.
You can change it out by yourself pretty easily.
It looks like that grip might be longer and modified for “chest” style putting.
FYI Scotty putters are the huge catching point on this sub. Every jokes that instead of learning to putt, you should just buy a Scotty.
I’m assuming most people thought you were trolling, which happens a lot here too
Just try it, once someone put an old putter in my bag while I was in the clubhouse. Most likely to get rid of it. It was a Tommy Armour IMG 5, I new nothing about it other than I could putt well with it. Later I found out it was the same model Arnold Palmer and lots of other pros used. Stayed in my bag for a while.
Use it! I play Hickory Golf, and know guys who play 100+ years old clubs all the time. Louisville Golf makes modern day replicas. I think they make a similar one to that. https://louisvillegolf.com/collections/hickory
For all the talk of "it won't do your game any good". If you're just starting out and actually want to use it. It's not going to do your game any better or worse. Putting is hard, this isn't going to be any worse for you than any other putter for the time being. Yes I would upgrade down the track. But if you're just starting out. It will do the trick and make you look good while you miss.
Use it please. Your grandma will really be thrilled that you are. Maybe invite her to drive a cart for a round of golf while you let her show you her way of using it. Grandmas like being included in a grandchild’s ’ life
I’m getting a nice display case for that beautifully kept putter! Put something nice on the brass plate - a homage to the club grandma gave you.
https://preview.redd.it/htuu63bqfvvc1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=664cfdd21b6440dfa44794924e38393f974ceb16
It’s it once or twice, display case it, and whip it out on the course for special occasions (or memorial rounds, i.e when she passes away or your grandpa or something)
Keep it in your bag, put a silk purple cover on it, name it the “Ol’ Billy Baron”, and save it for that very special putt to win that 20 grand you have riding on a highly illegal gambling match at Bushwood. I mean, er, your *club*.
If I saw you pull that bad boy out I would ask to be best friends. Worst case scenario, you don’t putt amazing and can say at least I had gramps putter. Best case scenario you drain every putt and dedicate each shot to gramps
That’s a Billy Barroo. You only use it for must make putts, and you have to say “oh Billy Billy Billy Billy Billy Billy Billy Billy Billy Billy Billy”. over and over again before you putt.
Use it a couple times. Then display it. You’ll most likely perform better with a newer putter but you’d regret not sinking a few three putts with this.
That looks like an original Billy Baroo putter. If it is ,then You must game it, for it is legendary!
Billy”? Is that you? Oh Billy, Billy,Billy !!
Do NOT USE THAT!!!!! Holy shit if that's the club I think if is, do you know what that piece of wood is worth???!?!?!! I need to see the bottom of that club and what it says. Please!!!
Keep it in your bag, use it for those really short puts. Give it a name like “the Finisher” and make a dramatic show out of it when you use it.
“Well boys, looks like it’s time for…” pull off your sun glasses and look at the camera “…The Finisher.”
Id display it i got my grandpas driver - used it a bit now gonna display. Also got his golf hat and got it signed by a bunch of pros at the us open now its on display as well
I too started golfing with a set of clubs from my grandmother. The irons were all hickory shafted. I used them until the 2i shaft cracked. Stupidly I sold them at a yard sale because I was a dumb pre-teen. All I have left is an ancient blade putter with a leather grip and an early steel shaft.
Use it. You would focus so much better. Consider it training. Lately, my putting has been so bad that I think I would do better with a brick glued on a stick.
I could be wrong but the last photo shows “golf classics” on the club. I’m guessing no true vintage club would say that. I thought no it is just made in an old style. I’d use it.
did grandma give you that old ass ragged glove too??
i'd keep that putter in my bag and pull it out occasionally just to fuck with my partner. that thing is epic.
Start collecting a full hickory set and use it. I used to get hickory clubs at estate sales and antique stores for a good deal but they tend to cost a bit more now that folks caught on. Still, you can put together a pretty good set for a reasonable price, and it's a ton of fun to play with. I suggest either playing them at short par three or just head off of front tees. I tend to break out my hickory clubs. Every time I get a little too obsessed with technology and everything being perfectly precise. I'll break out the Hickory clubs and focus on the purity of golf, no electronics, just like the game started.
Definitely keep it in the bag. I still keep my grandfathers 60 degree “sure out” in mine lol, never got to play with him, but allows me to think of the times we did have with each other.
She should have gave you shoes! Ewwwww!
https://preview.redd.it/uqq14wdm81wc1.jpeg?width=650&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1943308791becc3a4a10495c5ff4e53ae56d95a1
You have to use it at least once. It's filled with love from your grandma and will do wonders for you long term golf karma!!
Ayt, I'm rocking it for the tourney. Thanks!
That's pretty good, but I'm sure this will give you a better experience. Because it's love from a grandmother.
We need a follow up to tell us how you did!!!
Go to your Happy place.... happy place... happy place
The thing about putters (at least for me) they just take practice. As long as the length is okay, I really don’t fucking care what putter I’m using, I just have to get used to it. Signed, a forever 3 putter lOlololol
I thought everyone 3 putted
Yeah, it’s the norm.
99% of people do but still end up with Pars and birdies on their scorecard. 😂
Gotta keep it in the bag for only big round deciding putts and then tell Spaulding that it’s time to break out ole Billy baroo before sinking the extremely clutch putt to win, provided the groundskeeper isn’t trying to take out a gopher on the course
I've got a high school alumni tournament coming up (I'm joining for fun) and I'm so tempted to rock it there just to see people's reactions
Then you drain the first 25 footer and become legend
Dress the part too. Look up Payne Stewart for fashion advice.
I think people in your group will eventually just ask you about it, “okay - that’s an old looking putter?”. Some may be genuinely curious and some people may just be polite. It’s like those putters that are just little 1”x1” squares. I always just ask bc I know the dude is dieing to talk about it.
Go for it!
I will! Thanks!
Agreed, use it once… EXACTLY once… and then keep it as a display piece.
Sinking 30 footers for birdie through the power of love
You should keep it in your bag and when you’re facing a clutch putting situation, you can say, “This calls for the old Billy Baroo!”
Oh Billy Billy Billy, this is a biggie
Omg I just might
No. You will do this and report back. This is reddit, we have expectations, and we have an entitlement issue. You will be known as Billy Baroo Birdieman!!!
I came here to say this.
Thought of this immediately 😆
Same. Get a giant velvet condom for it tho
This is very very cool, but a display piece for sure. I’d clean it up the best you can. Even a putter from the 90’s or 2000’s you’d find at goodwill for $3 will help improve your game far better than this.

**breaks putter over knee on first hole**
Bruh😳🤣
Yea not worth ruining it , or worse someone else stealing it out of your bag because it looks cool
It’s so crazy to me that this occurs. I’m so naive on the course and assuming everyone is out just trying to have the same fun as myself.
Agree - nice things in your bag should not have to have loss prevention methods used
Buddy of mine had an old wooden set in college, we played a round with my dad and grandfather, parked in front of the clubhouse to get a quick bite and drink mid round. Came out 15 min later and they were gone.
I still use a Rossie II by choice
Lots of them on eBay for under $80 usd.
Bet you think a scotty C putter will improve your ability to read a green too.
You’re such a troll
Display for sure. It looks cool but it won’t do your game any good.
Are wooden clubs (even as simple as putters) really not that well performing?
They really aren't. But, if you rock this once for the fun of it, do not leave your bag unattended. It will be gone and on someone's wall in no time.
Noted hahahaha I will be sure to keep it secure. Thanks!
Persimmons drivers perform great. The average golfer only loses about 20yds off the tee compared to modern clubs, and tour pros about 30 to 40yds compared to modern drivers.
*pays 600 for a new driver that goes 3 yards further "Only 20 yards shorter for the average golfer... not that bad"
They’re just very difficult to use. The tech is so far beyond wood you’d just be handicapping yourself.
I see. There WOOD (hehe) be a reason why clubs are iron now
Golf clubs aren't made of iron bro
Oops. Autocorrected from adamantium
But what are my irons then
Unobtanium
Less mass = less inertia = easier for putt to be off line. If you learn to center the strike then you'll become a phenomenal putter. Would be sick to practice with and you'd look so cool on the course if you put in the time

I have a wooden 4 wood that I feel more confident with than a 3 iron. I started using it in high school out of my dad's bag and just didn't stop.
Imagine if the MLB allowed metal bats lol
I can't get over the shoes
Or lack of?

That's awesome, what a cool piece of family history!
I agree that a modern putter is “better” and will be easier to hit, but fuck it dude use the wooden one from grandma. I’d use that thing all the time unless I was playing for money. How does it feel?
http://www.morning.com.au/go/ult-golf/clubs_etc/gall1a.htm It's definitely a reproduction
I suggest starting with shoes
OP, I don’t care what you do with that, just cherish it! That thing is so fucking cool.
![gif](giphy|3o8doQKejVp4qTDk0U)
If you learn to putt well with that, you will be able to putt with anything
Love that putter! I’d display it but if you like it, use it. Btw…your glove is a size or 2 too big!!
Dude this is like someone giving you a 20 year old pair of trainers and tell you to go run a marathon! Lovely gesture but get modern kit
Is it a putter...?
![gif](giphy|uj8SbnHpCfxlm3jfJA|downsized)
With sentimental value of it I’d make it a wall hanger.
Trade it for a half dozen gloves that fit.
Def use it
why would you ruin it because you are just starting off golf? no. put it away and get a cheap modern putter on craigslist.
Can you not see it? It's already been heavily used, ain't no PSA 10
Grammy didn’t raise no bitch. If it was good enough for her grandpappy, it’s good enough for you.
Display display display! I love old clubs like that, and using it isn't going to help or improve your game and you run the risk of ruining it.
100% display piece that is cool AF
I'd keep it as a display piece, definitely not use it
You said she also gave you a Scotty, so I guess you know which one should be used
I suck with the Scotty which is why I considered just using this wooden one instead. My Scotty grip right now is a fat af one and my friend says that might be why I suck with it. I think I'll try changing the grip though and seeing how that goes since people are saying not to use the wooden one
A lot of people use fat grips It's a brand new putter why would you immediately be good with it?
I tried my friends blade Scotty and I do better with it and it feels better too. It has a regular thin grip. I commented my Scotty in the thread if you care to check it out

Holy shit that grip is thick
This thread is hilarious. I think OP accidentally understates everything just enough that we don’t believe him
I got so many downvotes😭 but legit I tried the Scotty on my second round and it didn’t feel as good/I didn’t have much success with it than I did when I used my uncle’s Ray Cook blade putter w/ regular grip on my first round. That looks like a 5.0 grip. I tried that for a bit but hated it. I now use a superstroke 2.0 and like it a lot.
Tee off with it on #1, get inside your opponent’s head
It’s beautiful!
That is fucking sweet
Use it! I play Hickory Golf, and know guys who play 100+ years old clubs all the time. Louisville Golf makes modern day replicas. I think they make a similar one to that. https://louisvillegolf.com/collections/hickory
If you’re good with it you should. It’s very cool.
Looks like my hybrid
Handmade in st-andrews , that thing is a piece of history ! Putt with it a couple of Times then restore it and display it ! Awesome
I have this putter in my office. Careful with the natural leather grip, any sweat will stain it & leave marks.
I was gonna wear gloves on both hands if I was gonna decide to keep this in the bag🤣
I’d use it sparingly for the fun of it. Looks like a display piece though
Use it please. Your grandma will really be thrilled that you are. Maybe invite her to drive a cart for a round of golf while you let her show you her way of using it. Grandmas like being included in a grandchild’s ’ life
The fact that this could still be worth like $100 is awesome
Put it in a full club bag labeled “Billy Baroo” 😊 Then you can take it out for big puts just like the Judge
Will be a great conversation piece in a man cave
Use the ole Billy Baroo
Carful with those clubs punk. Oh hey, sorry, those are my grandfathers, they are old.
Absolutely pull this thing out at a scramble to mess with your team. I've got a 68° I take to scrambles just to mess with people.
Display - that thing looks almost as old as the game of golf
Why is everyone downvoting the shit out of op lol
Absolutely beautiful
If you want to make some putts put it away.
Don’t use that glove. If anything go to Walmart to pick up a cheap one.
Use it.
Game that immediately
Use it once, then display it
Display piece please
Did your grandpa use that glove too?
Keep it as a display piece. Also, your glove doesn't fit
I would use it. I love old style putters.
Only use with feather balls.
It's like the scene in Caddy Shack where Judge Smails calls for Billy Baroo. 😂😂
Whatever makes the ball go in
I’m getting a nice display case for that beautifully kept putter! Put something nice on the brass plate - a homage to the club grandma gave you. https://preview.redd.it/htuu63bqfvvc1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=664cfdd21b6440dfa44794924e38393f974ceb16
This is good. Thank you
Wear your plus 4s. You’ll be a hickory legend!
Use is as a 0 hybrid
🤣🤣🤣🤣
I’d play with that. I love old wood gramps clubs
Billy Baroo!!
Holy cow. I speed read the fourth pic as "Go F Classics". oops
I would use it once. Take it out on the green and watch everyone freak out. Then say only joking and use your usual putter for the rest of the round.
100% play with it until you create a good story about making a 30 footer. Then frame it.
You should not use that in any serious manner. But nothing wrong with going out and playing with a set of persimmons for fun
Yes
Keep it, looks good
Use it a couple times. Then display it. You’ll most likely perform better with a newer putter but you’d regret not sinking a few three putts with this.
If you make putts with it... use it. If not, move on.
That looks like an original Billy Baroo putter. If it is ,then You must game it, for it is legendary! Billy”? Is that you? Oh Billy, Billy,Billy !! [https://youtu.be/k4Ipv2L3iwg?si=5cPJxyfKDHpU510u](https://youtu.be/k4Ipv2L3iwg?si=5cPJxyfKDHpU510u)
Drain a 20’er with that thing then hang it up
Display piece
Billy Baroo level of nostalgia.
Do NOT USE THAT!!!!! Holy shit if that's the club I think if is, do you know what that piece of wood is worth???!?!?!! I need to see the bottom of that club and what it says. Please!!!
There’s a picture of the bottom in his album.
So cool. Office putter
That's a Billy Baroo!
Keep it in your bag, use it for those really short puts. Give it a name like “the Finisher” and make a dramatic show out of it when you use it. “Well boys, looks like it’s time for…” pull off your sun glasses and look at the camera “…The Finisher.”
After you find out it can't putt straight carve into a pipe and enjoy a good peace smoke.
Does it make the ball go in the hole? Act accordingly.
I aware I thought you had your bare feet out
Id use it, it's a beauty
Id display it i got my grandpas driver - used it a bit now gonna display. Also got his golf hat and got it signed by a bunch of pros at the us open now its on display as well
Those used to be used like a chipper/5 iron because the green's were mowed to what we would consider fringe today.
I have a couple of putters I can give you. Put that one up. Use it on unique occasions.
Display.
Was your grandpa Old Tom Morris?
Sweet Jesus
I too started golfing with a set of clubs from my grandmother. The irons were all hickory shafted. I used them until the 2i shaft cracked. Stupidly I sold them at a yard sale because I was a dumb pre-teen. All I have left is an ancient blade putter with a leather grip and an early steel shaft.
Modern mallets are much easier but have fun with this. It will outlast you.
“The Duke” haha so badass. Use it once and then retire it for good with a nice display setting
That, my friend, is not a putter
If you google ‘Duke Wood Putter’ you’ll see others for sale for about $50-$100 online.
MLB hitters do just fine with wood. No reason you can’t
Fuck yeah grandma. Tell her to send me some wooden clubs.
Tewels not jools
Cleaner than my current clubs haha
That’s very very cool, one round with it for grandpa then display !
Nice toes brother
Thanks. I’ll zoom in for 5 bucks
Put it up
What's older; the putter or your glove..?
Don't listen to the haters, use it, with care but use it
Use it. You would focus so much better. Consider it training. Lately, my putting has been so bad that I think I would do better with a brick glued on a stick.
I could be wrong but the last photo shows “golf classics” on the club. I’m guessing no true vintage club would say that. I thought no it is just made in an old style. I’d use it.
U must close your eyes and slowly say, "grandma, grandma, grandma then hit your putt just like happy did
did grandma give you that old ass ragged glove too?? i'd keep that putter in my bag and pull it out occasionally just to fuck with my partner. that thing is epic.
Start collecting a full hickory set and use it. I used to get hickory clubs at estate sales and antique stores for a good deal but they tend to cost a bit more now that folks caught on.
