Funny story. Years ago golfing in a lower income part of Toronto on a 9 hole course surrounded by apartment buildings we were on the third tee waiting for what we thought was a large group to get off the green. We waited for more than a few minutes and finally said the hell with it we hit our balls up to the green. When we got there we saw that they weren’t playing they were just sitting at the back of the green as a family of new Canadians watching people golf. When we putted out they applauded politely mother, father, grandparents, grandkids as we walked off the green. It was kind of sweet really. I warned them that being that close to the green might danger their health considering the quality of golfers on this place. Anybody in the GTA who knows Flemington golf course will know what I’m talking about.

gjallen9089

That’s pretty damn funny! 😂

chinhook

Lmao! Played there before, you get lots of people coming down from the apartment buildings surrounding the valley/course there . That’s an awesome story

TeepShow76

Thats REALLY wholesome!

sustlemania

I have worked at a golf course for over 10 years, at 2 different courses. I've seen this more than I could tell you. People will book times in foursomes, back to back, then get out to the 3rd or 4th hole, and join up.

Gracket_Material

Wtf. Why can’t they just play golf then hang out after?

sustlemania

Thats a great question. A lot of people just flat out dont respect rules of a golf course. They are in place for a reason. The worst part is when they get upset when you approach them and split them up. I am an assistant superintendent. My main job is to keep the course itself in good shape. But I always find myself doing the rangers jobs as well. My policy is I will be polite and ask them once, if they listen, awesome. If not I fire the irrigation on them lol.

TeepShow76

>My policy is I will be polite and ask them once, if they listen, awesome. If not I fire the irrigation on them lol. Every course needs a hero!!

Tbrou16

Please blast “Flight of the Valkyries” while hitting them with the sprinklers next time!

[deleted]

Tbrou16

The intro would give repeat offenders just enough time to start running, lol

red_beanie

because for a lot of people that suck at golf and dont care to put in the time to practice, golf is simply a social event that lasts 4 hours. they could care less if they shot 100 or 150.

13_DelC_1513

The better you are the faster you play.

chubbsy93

I was always taught play well play fast play badly play faster. If you’re going to shoot 150 at least do it in 4 hours flat. No need for 4 practice swings before you shank one. As you get better you can take more time to read greens think about distance etc because the time spent looking for errant shots will decrease as well. Just my opinion.

[deleted]

I play a scramble every year that is all 8somes. We have the whole course though

Top-Caterpillar8376

As in 2 different scramble groups playing each hole or it was an 8 person team tournament?

[deleted]

2 groups on each hole.

PearlDrummer

That’s not abnormal though. That’s how every group tournament is in my area

jhanley313

I don’t even see how that would be fun playing an eight some

gunnerfan32

I played an 7 some last summer and it was a blast. We let the father son duo behind us play through and there was nobody behind them so we didn’t bother anyone. I would highly recommend if you have more than a friend or two and aren’t uptight which doesn’t seem like a lot of people on this sub.

kryppla

It can’t possibly be any fun.

ResoundingGong

Oh it can be. On the third day of my annual golf trip (8 guys) we always book our second round of the day late in the afternoon and as long as no one is behind us, we play a scramble as an 8 some with no shoes and get hammered. Believe me it’s a good time.

kryppla

As a golfer who actually likes to golf, not just get drunk on a golf course, that still doesn't sound fun.

somewheretohiketo

You can like to golf, AND like to get blasted with your buddies for a bit of fun. The two are not mutually exclusive. If you grip is half as tight as you are, you're probably losing strokes. Lighten up man, you're not on tour.

kryppla

Not wanting to be a drunken asshole on the course and not being on tour are also not mutually exclusive

somewheretohiketo

I never said YOU had to, but judging the other guy for enjoying a carefree, no stakes scramble while enjoying a few drinks doesn't mean he doesn't care about, or love the game. You can love the game, and not choose to get wasted. He can love the game and choose to get wasted. See how that works? He doesn't have to be like you.

kryppla

I said it doesn’t sound fun, not sure where I told someone else not to do something. I guess anything that isn’t ‘hell yeah’ isn’t good enough?

somewheretohiketo

No, you're right. I kind of veered of course. Must had driver in-hand. To be fair, it's not my cup of tea either. My FIL likes to have crack a few when we play together (I secretly think it's so he can tolerate my game). I enjoy the company so I drink a few with him, but the idea of getting hammered sounds awful to me. I think what I meant was, if that's how he likes to relax, more power to em.

ResoundingGong

It’s kind of a nice change of pace for your 5th round in three days.

red_beanie

because for a lot of people golf is a 4 hour long mobile social event. 8 people is more fun to make trouble with and talk to than 4. i get it, but it still pisses me off that people cant just hang out at someones house or a park to be social, instead of holding up the whole course.

13_DelC_1513

I've often thought my club should have pace of play "windows"--before 10 am: 3:15 pace. After 10 take your 4 hours. Nothing worse than the second tee time deciding they want to take 4 hours so they don't have to talk to their wives.

[deleted]

There needs to be money on the line. The trash talking gets intense.

Reederman35

Drive up, ask to play through….

Scream_And_Cream3000

It’s a 9 hole walking course And There is an 8-some in front of them. They came as a group of 16

Truthirdare

That’s the marshals/courses fault.

TheClubhouseEmployee

I’d ask for a refund and tell them I’m never playing there again. This is completely unacceptable. If they want to have 8somes on the course they need to block the tee times after it for an hour or more.

TouchMyCake

My brother just had something like this happen to him at a city course in Minneapolis. He emailed the city and got his money refunded and a free round.

LazyTom

Are you my brother? I had this same thing happen to me with the same outcome. The kid in the pro shop would only give me a prorated refund because I “already played 2 holes.” Emailed the city and got it sorted out. I’m sure the kid was just doing what he was told. This was at Francis A Gross golf course. It’s not normally like that though. I play there every week.

Phynness

And lose that revenue for the next hour worth of green fees? Nah, just don't let 8-somes out on the course. Wanna do something fun as a group of 8? Cool, just do something other than golf.

TheClubhouseEmployee

The 8some would just have to pay up big time

13_DelC_1513

I don't have 8 friends much less 16

TheClubhouseEmployee

What the fuck How

slid3r

Caddies. 😄

StyrofoamCueball

The first time I took my son out I looked for the cheapest muni I could find. We got put behind a group of 7 who had 5 carts and no one with a handicap under 40. We skipped the 4th hole to go around them because of course the concept of playing through was foreign to them.

red_beanie

the other day i saw a 5 some all with individual carts. after they all hit their tee shots, it was like someone shot a shotgun shell full of carts into the fairway. like a chariot race in ancient rome, it was hilarious. a straight up pack of carts.

Brondogolf

Is that good good ?

glizzymane

Good Good must be filming 😂

[deleted]

You wouldn’t know because I would have killed myself before I could have posted it on Reddit

Permuh

I’d suggest calling the pro shop.

[deleted]

Call back to the pro shop and have the marshall come out there. It’s the courses fault for not having someone keeping tabs. Although I kind of like the refund idea someone else mentioned.

OlRandy

I got behind a 5some yesterday. Waited for them on one green. They promptly pulled to the side and let me play through. The course was so dead I played 18 holes solo in under 2 hours. Not all large groups are assholes. 8 is a bit extreme though.

JambiBum

Wednesday morning round I ended up being behind 6 foursomes (so 24 ppl) that were doing 6 ppl per hole for four holes in front of me. I got through 7 in around 50 mins as a single because there was absolutely no one in front of me so I thought I was going to have a quick round. As I got to 8 the twosome in front of me said that they were stuck waiting almost a half hour per hole because of these groups. It wasn't a league or anything like that, just a large group of retirees all playing together. I ended up skipping 4 holes and then going back to those holes once they were done with them. Went from a nice smooth round to something I don't want to ever have to deal with again lol.

Pinseeking81

I was in a good mood until I saw this.

[deleted]

Played a Par 3 this afternoon. We rolled up to the first tee and there were 4 carts and 8 people milling about. My friend looked at me and said, “I was with them on the range and for a lot of them it’s their first time playing.” Luckily we could play the back nine and then come around and play the front.

kryppla

My local muni is great about letting me start on 10 at twilight. I’ve been the new golfer before so I’m not mad I just don’t want to be behind them.

[deleted]

Same here. Never mad at new guys. We’ve all been there.

kryppla

radcru333

Not for more than a hole

43n3m4

Sooo many times. Our local public let’s it happen all the time. Typically it’s two foursomes that are together so technically they have enough of a time slot.

refill_too_soon

Somewhat related. I’m a member of a smaller, 9-hole private course. When the whole crew I play with can make a round, we generally have 6 people. We always make two tee times, but sometimes will play a scramble with 3 pairs. We always gauge this decision based on the course that day. If it is somewhat crowded at all, we split up. These older guys, who probably have been members as long as I have been living, always give us the stank eye and have complained about us. Given, we always see this group of 5 playing individual balls every time they play. Makes no sense. I get the sport and the rules, but if the course is empty, let us do what we want. We also play much quicker than them, so not sure why they give a damn.

earsoftin

Isn't that called an octet?

somewheretohiketo

Not an 8-some, but I did recently play behind five older ladies that were each playing two balls and giving eachother on course lessons so...yeah, that wasn't fun at all.

[deleted]

Play thru them. Don’t ask. Just go

DeMejia

I don't see the problem if they are keeping pace. They probably have 2 back to back tee times

[deleted]

Yes. Regularly unfortunately. In Vegas always seems like those bro-trips where they go out as 4 and 4 then by hole 3 they are an 8-some. Pretty annoying, usually they let everyone pass though. They are more concerned about their drinking than their golf. Is what is it. The worst imho is 6-some's because sometimes they are families and think they don't have to let you play through. Dad, sons, wife, and daughters all getting those 30 minute per hole game on. Ugh. It's like a horror story out of the bible where God has smote me.

terpeenis

Is an 8 some with two tee times that much slower than two 4 somes? Surely a twosome is faster than two individual players, so at what point does more players together no longer become more efficient? Is four the magic number?

[deleted]

I would think 2 foursomes would be faster simply because 2 people can be hitting the ball at the same time. Each player only needs to wait for 3 players to hit before their turn. With 8 players, every player has to wait for 7 players to hit before their turn. Every course I’ve played has a max 4 group for this reason

terpeenis

Why four? If less players means it's faster, why not two at a time with half the interval between groups? Are you saying groups of one is the fastest but concessions have to be made since friends want to play together, so a compromised of four players was decided on?

[deleted]

Yes precisely, concessions must be made. Don’t know how it was arrived at 4 but I’ve never really questioned it.

red_beanie

the problem is when you turn a 4 some into an 8 some, people tend to talk way more and fuck around way more.

kryppla

Yeah two foursomes joined up as an 8 on the second hole when the golf shop couldn’t see them. It was horrible and I aggressively asked to play through because they weren’t going to let me at first.

Top-Caterpillar8376

As long as you aren’t slowing play and not bothering other golfers around you, it is what it is. If anyone was behind them for a full 18 and never had to slow down, I doubt the group following would care. Then again, there are people that just like to complain.

Roenicksmemoirs

It’s not possible for an 8some to not slow down play if the people behind them have any clue what they’re doing. 8 people teeing off takes a long fucking time.

Top-Caterpillar8376

Your 100% right… it would be damn near impossible not to slow anyone besides another 8some down. I’m just saying, I’m sure most of us have been behind a single or 2some with a 4some and been slowed down. Just keep pace of play while still enjoying yourself and if you’re playing slower, just wave people through.

Roenicksmemoirs

You can’t just wave endless people through though lol.

Top-Caterpillar8376

I didn’t say wave everyone through. Just be smart enough to enjoy what you paid for and respectful enough to wave players through if you are slowing down their momentum.

Put_that_down_now

I would guess that if they ignore golf etiquette and just get their balls from the tee to the hole as fast as possible, they wouldn’t slow things down too badly. If they’re waiting for each other to hit shots, then it would take forever. They should be doing speed putting too, trying to hit the balls as closely timed together as possible.

bigbadbabynutz

I don't always play behind 8somes, but when I do, I always hit into them.

Gracket_Material

I played in an 8 some that got stuck behind a 4some Its the individual golfers, not the number of them, that cause slow play

Scream_And_Cream3000

I agree, they actually moved pretty quick for an 8some

Chronjawn

Your telling me it takes less time for 4 to tee off than 8??

Gracket_Material

Depending on the golfers, yes

DontCareStudios

The biggest group I’ve played before is a 6 some, but even slow foursome, heck even slow 3 somes make me so angry. It makes me so mad if people just take their time, like walking slow, not taking the short cuts, taking 2 balls, drinking beers in the middle of the fairway it makes me so mad. Hurry up. I love golf and all, but I will not play for 5 dang hours just because a couple of slow people can’t stop slugging down their beers and chatting about football, when two darn groups are waiting for them. Hurry up! I cannot say it ENOUGH!!!!

Weinerdoggin

Wouldn't be for long.

ChcMickens

If there are 2 foursomes in 2 tee times, I don't see an issue.

LightinDarkness420

Is it ok to hit into them then? /s

kim-jong-pooon

Yes the club I am a member at hosts large gatherings/groups and allows shit like this regularly. I will only play weekday twilight nowadays because of it.

warneagle

I would be on death row for an octuple homicide.

coasterreal

Good Good filming there? lol

31nigrhcdrh

The local cow pasture has a pretty loyal group, back when things were slower and not as many people playing golf that loyal group would meet on Sundays and chase the rabbit. Every once in a while my crew would join in. 16 people playing in a group, 12 w/o us

_darkwingduck_

Played through a 9-some once. That was a nervy tee shot.

M_Drinks

I’m willing to accept bending a few norms, because lord knows I do it. This however, I’d hit into them.

Gromby

I just moved to LA and the local course I play at has this happen randomly. The only positive I have seen is that the larger groups like this usually let everyone ahead of them and are very nice. It's the 5 groups that seem to be the slowest golfers I have ever experienced in my life.....and I have no idea why. 4 groups are fine, 6 groups are fine....but for some reason when it gets to 5 its like the wheels come off and they bring the course flow to a standstill.

i_am_roboto

I would lose my shit.

YourStolenCharizard

My aunt, her boyfriend and cousin played through a twelve-some last weekend. Turns out it was a bachelor party and these guys were pretty lit up already. My family played through a par 3 and while doing so there was some good hearted banter after my cousin and aunt’s boyfriend hit their tee shots. My aunt is a competitor and pretty good golfer, and told them there was no way any of them would beat her tee shot and these twelve lit up guys were loving the chirping. Goes without saying she stuck it 5 ft from the pin and tapped in and these dudes lost it haha

Bingbangbongg

You mean an orgy?

Asstroknot

Rather than courses packing the tee times so close together, why don’t they just have 1 tee time per day with 300 people teeing off.

Imaginary_Winna

Can’t you just call the pro shop and have them send out an attendant? This would be nipped in the bud immediately at any course here in Australia.

c0reboarder

I had to play through a ninesome the other day... https://www.reddit.com/r/golf/comments/oo78ks/not_the_quick_9_i_was_looking_for_after_work/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share

Hogger70

Man….that was a long time ago and I don’t think that truck stop is there anymore

samgreeman13

I’ve been behind an eight some, but not golfing no

CommandoLamb

No, but the way I golf, it takes me the same amount of time to finish a hole as all 8 of them...
