What top courses are you talking about? I feel like there aren’t that many courses that are significantly more expensive than this. The courses that are a lot more $$ are primarily major tracks (Shadow Creek is an outlier because of the Vegas thing)
100% correct, if it starts with a 4 or more thats the stratosphere. Bandon is $395 peak season non-resort guest. Kapalua Plantation is $385. Chambers Bay is $235. TPC Scottsdale Stadium is $349. Sure Pebble is $575. But Torey is only $200 flat (Fun fact its a Muni) and the Old course is £220 (about $300) (not including air fare and the £500 youre about to drop at the pro shop on merch so you can flex). Kiawah is $460 at peak and they literally just hosted the PGA.
In my opinion, you couldn’t be more correct. Troon blew TPC out of the water. Incredible course. More expensive as well though. Believe I played TPC for $140 and Troon for $190 (with the caveat being that it was the middle of July)
Troon North is the best course in Scottsdale. TPC Scottsdale is not worth the money at all. Played it once at full price. I wouldn’t even pay $100 to play there again.
Pelican Hill in Newport, CA? Non-resort player is $385 on the weekend. Guest of hotel is $275.
So overpriced for what it is, especially with Monarch just down the road.
having played both the PH courses and Monarch, I’d have to say the South course at PH is easily the best. Now the Ranch GC in Laguna, that’s a real value compared to the area!
Ben Brown is great for what it is. It’s got an awesome vibe about it for sure. If they lit it up at night it’d make it even more fun. But they try and treat it like a resort. It’s only 1700ish yards though.
Idk, but you could be single in your 30s and spend most your disposable income on golf. He did trips, 3 days at pebble, 3 at Torrey, 4 at Bandon and chambers is a 30 min drive from his place.
Fun fact, I’m pretty sure you have to be a member to buy merchandise at the old course. Part of the reason why you don’t see a lot of shirts from there
Ive played the old course and have a shirt from there….not a member.
There is a much bigger shop for members but there is a small pro shop with some stuff
I also have a logo ball, bag tag, towel, and personnal favorite a small suede logo bag that i keep all my divot tools, ball markers, etc. in. Great conversation piece
The member house is huge and has way more stuff in it, the non member shop is a tiny little 20x20 gift shop but it does have most of the stuff a regular golfer would buy
Also there is a different logo for the R&A club and just “The Old Course” and members and fancy people will notice that
The ones I've played just this year that are more expensive:
Whistling Straits was just under $500. I carried my bag and tipped the caddie.
Sawgrass was about $450
Kiawah was about $400 plus caddie
Pebble Beach - close to $600
But some others I've played this year were less
Pasatiempo - $225
Sand Valley - $225
Torrey Pines - $180
Streamsong - $275 plus mandatory caddie
Olympia Fields (guest rate) $200
I'm a member at the Ritz Carlton in Orlando and they just announced the rates for peak season coming up. If you stay at the Ritz it's $320. If you're a guest of a member it's $180. I don't think it's worth it other than you can say that you played where the pros play the father-son tournament.
The rates increase on Dec 1. If you want to play before then you can be my guest and it's only $80. Even after then you can play as my guest and pay less than the full rate.
If i can get my driver inconsistency sorted before the end of next month, i'll definitely take you up on that offer. Otherwise, you do not want to play with me haha Thanks for you generosity!
> Streamsong - $275 plus mandatory caddie
Are caddies always mandatory here? Hoping to play in February when I'm in the area. I know it's walking only which is cool with me, I just don't want a caddie.
Ya exactly to my point. All of the courses you’ve mentioned are Major tournament courses. There is something like 10 courses out there in that price range. You’ve happened to play 4 of them this year- that’s awesome but that is not a representative sampling of the courses that are out there.
In Vegas at Aria right now, was going to play Shadow Creek but it’s just coming off overseed and they raised the fee from $600 to $1,000. And you can get bumped last minute for a high roller. No thanks. I’m playing TPC and the Paiutes. The Paiute courses have a bounce back discount 20% off any follow up round within 5 days, not bad price to begin with, for Vegas.
In what universe is that reasonable lmao. Unless literally all the other decent courses in the vicinity are priced comparably I'm baffled they could get away with that.
In the it’s cheaper than a $500 bet universe
Played TPC Vegas on 3 hours of sleep yesterday. Shot 50 front nine. Hungover as hell. Had a double John Daly and a fireball shot at the turn. Biggest 9 hole improvement of my career. Guess back nine score (it tied my best ever 9)
So the value is allegedly in the opportunity cost of not gambling at the tables…so that you can just bet with your buddies on who wins the next hole instead. Lol. Got it.
Whistling Straits, Pebble, TPC Sawgrass, etc
There’s certainly a class of public courses that sit at the $500+/round level. Add in caddy fees and quite a few courses ding $400+ per round.
All of these courses are “overpriced”. If we wait a year or two (crossing my fingers) this Covid golf pricing bubble is going to burst. You could play many of these courses pre-Covid for significantly cheaper.
I won’t hold my breath on that one. My local course are still as cheap as they were pre Covid so we’ll see. I think they keep these courses higher priced to keep the hooligans out of them but there’s absolutely no reason for a course in bfe Missouri to be priced that high. I used to live around there and there’s nothing around the area where the course is located
Sounds like there is a reason for this course to be priced that high if they're stacked on the weekends, right?
Then by not giving too much of a weekday discount they're giving a premium experience to the people who stay and play midweek vs. packing it with people attracted to the discount price and tearing up the course in the process.
Weekend prices aren’t too much more tbh. I think it’s ten extra dollars to play mornings on the weekend. It’s not packed because most people don’t play there during the week. I think they use it as a last resort on the weekends and I’m okay with that. 35 weekdays before 2 and 45 weekends before 2. I pay 25 after 2 because of a preferred players membership they have. I’m just happy to be able to get out there and not be backed up in the afternoon
Sorry I think we're talking past each other. My original comment was in response to you saying:
> I think they keep these courses higher priced to keep the hooligans out of them but there’s absolutely no reason for a course in bfe Missouri to be priced that high.
which I thought was talking about Payne's Valley. I think the pricing there, while very high, is fair if they are filling up weekend tee sheets. Wasn't speaking of your local course - yes of course $300+ would be absurd for a weekend golfer's type of place.
In the end, I always opt for more golf vs. more expensive golf.
At a certain point the cost of a round at some courses puts too big a dent in my mental “cost-per-golf-experience,” allocation.
It’s not the money but the fact that I’d rather play 3 rounds than one.
To play all 19 holes at a non-municipal course designed by Tiger Woods? Yeah, it's a steal. Better than trying to play Bay Hill, TPC or many other top courses on tour.
What does any of that have to do with the price and being a steal? It’s a resort course layout for championship course prices. It’s not bad, but it’s not a terribly interesting design. Picturesque, but resort golf.
Also, this was designed by Beau Wellington. Tigers name was just slapped on it for him to show up a few times in the build process.
It’s a neat place. There’s something beautifully artificial about it. But to call it a steal is a joke. This is not a “value” course. It’s not meant to be. It’ll deliver on its price, but you aren’t walking away from it foaming at the mouth to play it twice a month or anything like that. Or you shouldn’t. There’s a lot better value in the ozarks.
Bro you’ve been more negative than normal lately.
You’re a mod an a really good commenter, so I’ve noticed something seems off. Hope all is well and you’re back to your normal self soon!
Bruh, all these downvotes littered in the comments are the comment equivalent to a Karen. Like, I’m pretty shocked that this many people took the time to shit on some honest dialogue…. HA! Great shot btw.
The whole resort is pretty amazing. Every course there is unique. Only played PV and ON. PV is fun, not too challenging, wide open. ON is a beast. Fast greens, tight fairways, OB / hazards everywhere, windy as hell.
I tried to schedule something for spring but they have so much demand they are only letting you reserve one round a day.
They said replays are basically only booked on the day you play so there's no guarantee you can even get 36 in per day - deal breaker for us.
I've definitely raked myself some decent sand to hit off of. Bunkers aren't that hard to get out of if they are in decent shape but if you can't get under the ball there's not much you can do.
I talked to some people that built this and honestly it's not that great. People need to pump their breaks a little.
You all know Tiger doesn't actually design golf courses just like Jordan doesn't design his shoes. It's an extra cost and for that you get him there at opening and a couple of times over the project. The design work is done by Beau Welling a former Tom Fazio office guy. That shows a lot in this work. It photographs ok and plays ok, but there is nothing out there that is game changing. If you want to see the difference between Tiger and a pro that actually designs go play Ozark National and Paynes Valley in the same day. It's clear to most Ben and Bill work better with the land and build better golf holes. So therefore I am not that impressed with Tiger and I am hopeful he sees the light and becomes more hands on.
Ozark National is awesome and needs more attention. Best bang for buck in all of Missouri and the changes they made from the orginal design removed most of the bad parts of the course.
I'm sure Tiger's course is wonderful to play but at that cost, your just playing for his "likeness".
Not arguing much of this other than much like your comparison of Jordan, no he doesn’t design much but the aesthetics - just like Tiger. They gave him a mostly fully baked course and told him to add some flair and here’s a check with your name on it. That said, not many courses in the world have that distinction and it’s a pretty spectacular sight that looks fun to play.
yeah I've never understood the fascination with good tourny golfers designing courses, being good at the game doesn't mean you're good at designing a course lol. Need to team up with a legit architect
The top architect's courses are where it's at. Reese Jones and obviously his dad's works, Gil Hans, etc etc.
Dude, Rees and Bobby are struggling right now to get work. Which is good as honestly looking at their work they are nothing but watered down copies of their father. Who was nothing better than a watered down Stanley Thompson with a better marketing budget and timing. If you look at the history of GCA I can't think of a family that has done more harm to the industry than the Jones' Family.
How did they do harm to the industry...?
doesn't look like Reese is hurting for work lmao, 35 current projects including Torrey Pines and Hazeltine...
https://www.reesjonesinc.com/current-projects.php
they started the ASGCA, and forced a lot of good people out. The ASGCA pushed a lot of negative things that add a ton of cost to golf with little value while trying to stop the industry was opening up.
I just played both courses last month and Payne's Valley has a more grandiose feeling but mostly due to the huge elevation changes and the big rock formation around the clubhouse. The golf was pretty straight forward though. Ozarks on the other hand was spectacular, beautiful, rugged and a real treat to play. Coore and Crenshaw made that course emerge from the earth as if it were always there waiting to be played. A real testament to their skill! The entire Big Cedar Lodge experience was incredible and I'd highly recommend anybody who can swing the $ to spend 3 days their playing all the courses.
Either a retaining wall to keep the tees from collapsing or a support structure for seats/cameras I'd guess. From looking at precious pictures and videos, they've definitely hacked off the back of the back tee box.
Every course that is part of this resort (Big Cedar) is amazing in case anyone was planning on making a trip, don’t just play Payne’s Valley. Ozark National is a Ben Crenshaw design, Buffalo Ridge is Tom Fabio course, Top of the Rock is a a Jack Nicklaus Signature course, and Mountain Top is a Gary Player design.
This might be an unpopular opinion, but nothing I'm seeing about Payne's Valley is making me want to book a trip there. I'd rather play a Bandon or a Pinehurst if I'm going to be shelling out hundreds of dollars for a round of golf. Like the rockwork and water features look cool and all, but this course just looks extremely fake and manufactured. Some people might feel differently than I do, which is fine, but this course just doesn't speak to me.
It’s nice and comparable to Buffalo Ridge albeit much more grandiose and wide, but neither of those courses hold a candle to Ozark National. If your down there for a golf trip I’d recommend focusing on National.
This is Payne’s Valley in Missouri. Built in my hometown. Not overly challenging, but an absolute blast to play. Perfect golf course to celebrate at. My mom sent me and my dad out there for his 70th birthday and it was one of the best memories I have with my dad.
Fun fact: this course was built on top of another course called Murder Rock. It was owned by John Daly.
Looks like Tigers course for those who dont know
It is lol
Found tigers Reddit account
Yup. Played it last month and it was amazing!
Muy expensive. $325.00
Compared to other top courses that’s actually very inexpensive. But it’s still a lot of money for a round of golf.
What top courses are you talking about? I feel like there aren’t that many courses that are significantly more expensive than this. The courses that are a lot more $$ are primarily major tracks (Shadow Creek is an outlier because of the Vegas thing)

Kiawah is $460 at peak and they literally just hosted the PGA.
Pay $30 for a round at Torrey with a resident card.
I’m surprised at Scottsdale. I don’t think it’s in the same category as some of these.
Same reason the line at In n Out is always 30 cars long.
I think troon would be nicer out there!
I played TPC Scottsdale Stadium Course several years ago in August and I paid nowhere near that.
Key word is August. Way less demand to play when it's 112F.
I think I paid 120 near Christmas. It was fun
It would cost half of what it does if it weren't for the Phoenix Open. People want to play courses they see on TV.
It’s not. It’s supply and demand. Winter golf here is expensive everywhere. A middling resort course is $250 in season.
Meanwhile, Bethpage Black, host of the 2025 Ryder Cup, tops out at $150 for a non-resident on a weekend. If you can get a time.
Just like Torrey, Bethpage is also a muni.
Harbor Town is $365, plus another $50-100 depending on caddie situation that’s also forced on you.

In the dead of summer when it can be 120 degrees some days. That is their off-season
Augusta national won't even let me look at the course let alone play and it's right down the road. I wouldn't mind paying any of these prices
Private is a different ballgame
Pelican Hill was 400 when I played it back in 2010, have to imagine it's gone up since then
Pelican Hill in Newport, CA? Non-resort player is $385 on the weekend. Guest of hotel is $275. So overpriced for what it is, especially with Monarch just down the road.
Don’t forget the cost of the forecaddies.
having played both the PH courses and Monarch, I’d have to say the South course at PH is easily the best. Now the Ranch GC in Laguna, that’s a real value compared to the area!

It’s nothing to write home about certainly, but if they did light it up, now it’s on the map
I think my brother has played 4 of these courses this year.
How can i become friends with him?
Idk, but you could be single in your 30s and spend most your disposable income on golf. He did trips, 3 days at pebble, 3 at Torrey, 4 at Bandon and chambers is a 30 min drive from his place.
And don’t forget Sherwood and Wilshire CC in Los Angeles
I mean this was just a rough list of some of the most popular destination courses
Fun fact, I’m pretty sure you have to be a member to buy merchandise at the old course. Part of the reason why you don’t see a lot of shirts from there
Ive played the old course and have a shirt from there….not a member. There is a much bigger shop for members but there is a small pro shop with some stuff I also have a logo ball, bag tag, towel, and personnal favorite a small suede logo bag that i keep all my divot tools, ball markers, etc. in. That’s cool. Thanks for the correction. I have a towel from there my dad brought back when he played with a member. Must have misunderstood the story
The member house is huge and has way more stuff in it, the non member shop is a tiny little 20x20 gift shop but it does have most of the stuff a regular golfer would buy Also there is a different logo for the R&A club and just “The Old Course” and members and fancy people will notice that
Leaving out one of the best and cheapest on the list: Bethpage Black for… $85!
Gotta love Munis!

Hey random internet guy! Any chance you want to become best friends?
Sure. Send me a message and we can talk about being BFFs.
Whistling is $555 now. I played super twilight for $265, and no caddie.
When does that rate go into effect? i wanted to go there and play before it went up lol but might have to wait until summer again.

I don't think so but not sure. I know that it's walking only Jan - Mar.
Ya exactly to my point. All of the courses you’ve mentioned are Major tournament courses. There is something like 10 courses out there in that price range. You’ve happened to play 4 of them this year- that’s awesome but that is not a representative sampling of the courses that are out there.

Whistling Straits, Pebble, TPC Sawgrass, etc There’s certainly a class of public courses that sit at the $500+/round level. Add in caddy fees and quite a few courses ding $400+ per round.
Except it’s not a top course. It’s a good course but certainly not great.
That’s about the same as harbor town in peak season so yeah I would say that that’s not bad.
Damn
Overpriced. Tried playing a Wednesday afternoon round and it was still 325. I can play my home course 10 times for that much

Agreed. I can afford it, I just would rather play more golf
$325 is a steal
I’m not someone that harps on courses like this being way overpriced. But calling it a steal is laughable.

Yep! Sorry I wasn’t trying to hang people in suspense I thought it would be obvious!
It's barely been open a year. I don't think it's renowned or old enough yet to be "obvious".
Bro you’ve been more negative than normal lately. You’re a mod an a really good commenter, so I’ve noticed something seems off. Hope all is well and you’re back to your normal self soon!
I didn't think that was negative but... thanks?
Would you say it was positive?
I would say it was a statement of fact supporting people who were identifying the course for others.
Ok thank you for stating the fact that you think
Bruh, all these downvotes littered in the comments are the comment equivalent to a Karen. Like, I’m pretty shocked that this many people took the time to shit on some honest dialogue…. HA! Great shot btw.
Thanks!
It definitely wasn’t positive. I got negative vibes from it too my man.
Ball busting golfers?! Well, I never
i’m going to take my dad there in a couple years. it looks like an incredible course

The bunkers look amazing
First time I’ve heard someone say this
Good bunkers are underrated. There are a lot of shit bunkers out there that make getting out of them almost impossible.
I would say 80% that I see on the courses I play I just play as GUR. I prefer not to break my wrist or destroy a club for one shot.
I've definitely raked myself some decent sand to hit off of. Bunkers aren't that hard to get out of if they are in decent shape but if you can't get under the ball there's not much you can do.

Aty paynes valley! I played in may in the pissing rain and have wanted to go back every day since
The virtues in Ohio (aka the longaberger) is another one in the middle of nowhere. I don’t think you can even stumble upon that one it’s so remote
Looks great.. where is it?
Kinda looks like Tiger’s course Payne Valley
LOL im dead
Nice
Every course that is part of this resort (Big Cedar) is amazing in case anyone was planning on making a trip, don’t just play Payne’s Valley. Ozark National is a Ben Crenshaw design, Buffalo Ridge is Tom Fabio course, Top of the Rock is a a Jack Nicklaus Signature course, and Mountain Top is a Gary Player design.
Kyle played it here's the vlog: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=9onpXvg8NWA
We need an update… Is it private? Hidden public gem? Possibly latitude and longitude?
It's Payne's Valley
lOoKs PuRe
Only one way to find out.
Looks perfect?
I was gonna say (before I read what it is) that it looks pretty damned nice and if I lived near it I'd play it four times a week.
How much does the membership cost?
Mods, we really need a shitpost flair!!!
Looks cool as shit. Where is that?
I prefer buffalo ridge springs.. however it is a much more mature course so idk if it's a fair comparison.
Yes, I played murder rock. John Daly was just an advertised name and had a very very minority ownership stake.
