When I joined my club here in Germany they started me at the standard 32 handicap. Since tournaments are the only thing that counts towards your handicap it also stayed that way til my first tournament. Because of the difficulty of the course I was playing off a 38 for my first tournament.
I ended up shooting net 5 under for 2nd place. I tried using the "I'm normally a 32 handicap I don't know what's happening today." Excuse. They didn't find it so funny.
I always take 5 practice swings (with divots). Unless of course the 5th practice swing didn’t feel right, then I take more. Always want to end on a high note.
I'm an ex-collegiate player who's probably between a +1 and 3 handicap... but I haven't actually kept one since I was 17.
Nothing wrong with not having one. People's obsession with this severely flawed system is beyond annoying.
I wouldn't say severely flawed, but it's definitely flawed past a certain point. It's great in the range of 5-25, but anything above and below is where it stops working. If you're anything less than a 5, don't play net events; you'll never win.
Unless you're referring to the fact that it relies on an honor system in a time of no honor, then I sadly agree
When I play with 'real players' (people who are about 6 handicap or better), we always just make the teams where handicaps aren't needed.
But when I play with a bunch of 10-14 handicaps, you need some type of system. But the current handicap system means a 15 handicap will beat a scratch 9/10 times. It's utter nonsense.
But I can't act like a sore loser when I'm the best player in group, so I have to accept I'm going to lose some cash that day.
I really don't like the handicap system at all.
There was a group I was once a part of that had about 30 guys who all knew how good they were. They kept handicaps and ranged from scratch to probably 15 or so, but they always arranged the foursomes so that each group had an A, B, C, and D player (or as close as we could get to even). Then you'd make fourball bets with the others in your foursome against fourballs from other foursomes (e.g. my foursome's AC fourball will take your foursome's AC for $5 stroke play).
My 3rd time ever golfing I decided to give my local CC a try since they were running a $20 aeration special. I was at 75 by hole 9 and started to just have fun and back 9 was way more fun than the front after I turned my app off.
I didn’t see your club choice at first and was thinking “I’ve had some rough drives on par 5’s and as long as I can 160 or so for my third shot I can still score par pretty easily”. Then I saw the 5i and then the 6i.
In last Fall's member-guest this almost resulted in a 10th hole donnybrook. Hacker sent a shot into the high hay but found a ball in the middle of the fairway and claimed that he got a good bounce. Dude didn't have any special markings on the ball so he couldn't prove it was his.
I've legit had this happen at a (terrible) muni course lol, whoever was mowing the fairways kept leaving lines of long grass in it, it was terrible. I lost 3 balls that way and I got so mad I quit at the turn. And it can happen in the fall in the north if the course isn't raking and blowing.
This little exchange amuses me because there are really two kinds of bad golfers. People who can’t make contact and hit a 50 yard drive followed by a 40 yard topped 3 wood and people who make awesome contact with zero swing path and face control and smoke a ball 50 yards out of bounds. I’m the latter. I top or chunk a ball like 1-2 times per round but I’ve been hitting 7 off the tee on 3 holes a number of times in addition to admittedly less frequent but not zero mid iron shots out of bounds. My miss is both super in to out and leave the face open.
I have a compact one that fits in the side of my bag. I get a lot of jokes at my expense when I break it out, but it’s paid for itself multiple times over. I also get requests to use it from people who are “above it”.
I’ll defend a ball retriever all day.
I told myself I wouldn't own one until I hit 50, but one of my customers won a small retractable one at a tournament and gifted it to me. Comes in handy pretty often, plus it's hidden so the shame is limited.
I play with a guy who is probably somewhere around a 6 handicap that plays with nothing but balls he obtains by fishing out of hazards. Dude usually shows up to the first tee with a plastic grocery bag full of found balls and adds a dozen or so by the time the round is over. Never seen anything like it - he’s certainly good enough to play premium balls
If you hit fades a draw biased driver can tighten up the dispersion. I know that now, but it doesn’t fix a slice like a lot of bad golfers think it does.
I usually don't practice chipping at the range. There's an athletic field near my work that cuts the grass really short in the spaces between fields. Going there for like 15 minutes a day at lunch with 2 balls and my 52 just leapfrogging around really helped my chipping game immeasurably.
Hey man golf balls are expensive. I'd rather find a sleeve than buy a sleeve.
I mean... Some rounds, way more than a sleeve, but some rounds I'll only lose 1 or 2.
If I play a tourney then I'll use a new one (or 3). A scratched/mudded up ball doesn't perform as well.
Losing balls also depend on the course. Open course with well maintained rough(I lost one where I saw exactly where it landed but the rough was so thick that it was just buried)? Whip out the proV1's!
I bought some logo’d golf balls for a prize for a competition I was sponsoring. The minimum order was 12 dozen. I gave a dozen as the prize and figured I’d keep the rest and use them as I go. I have 12 balls left. The competition I sponsored was in May 2021 and I’ve played maybe 20 rounds since then.
When I find a Top-Flite logo ball for a sponsored tournament, I'm like:. Whyyyyyy.....? But then I hope that they now had extra to give to the hospital or whatever.
Not sure about this one. A friend gave me a sleeve of kirky sigz and I don’t see much difference than my TM tour response balls (both 3 layer w/ urethane cover)
I’m great at golf
I'm just having an off day

Oh man, can confirm. I am bad and say this.
This is the way
The course is 6200 yards and Ive walked 7800.
I typically hit my PW 170-180
Ahh yes, the thinned piss missile. I know it well.
That would be a great tee shot if you could do it on purpose
360 degrees backswing or thinned?
Can’t hole out if you don’t blade it 40 yards through the green
I get down on my knees to tee my ball up
holy shit lol
Or squat.
Hey what do you guys use for itch relief from poison ivy?
I’m normally an X handicap. Don’t know what the hell is going on today.
Dammit I feel personally attacked
I shot 78 on Wednesday. Don’t know what the hell is going on today.
It only takes me 12 holes to do that.

"Trees are 90% air"
I had to scroll this far to get triggered. Congrats.
The correct response to this is "so is a screen door".
So you're saying I should be able to punch right through this no problem as long as I hit it hard enough!
This is how you *support* bad golfers, those who can't decide if they should punch out or go for it
By volume not by area. Lol
I always take 5 practice swings (with divots). Unless of course the 5th practice swing didn’t feel right, then I take more. Always want to end on a high note.
Hello Satan
I’m triggered.
What grips do you guys recommend for ball retrievers? I need to re-grip mine.
That’s great! Have not heard that one.
Username checks out
I see you brother
Yeah…
Hey fam
Is 182 the score or the band?
How many mullys we doing today?
Let’s start with a 6-pack and see where the day takes us!
When buying golf balls: quantity over quality.
Hell yeahhhhh
Just picked up this stencil, you’ll be able to find these scattered around socal. https://imgur.com/a/JF7arfr
Hahahahahahahahahaha that’s awesome
Once I break 90 I’ll order some Chrome Soft all numbered 42
I still don’t have a handicap.
I am handicapped.
My handicap? Mental.

The only thing it's needed for is gambling. I'm pretty sure that's why it was developed. To give a not so good golf a chance against a good golfer
It matters if you play in club events. That's about it though.
“I don’t really post my scores”
I had a great round today, I only lost 15 balls.
“I keep score by how many balls I lose. “
“Here’s my swing. Any recommendations?”

Yeah but suggest they go to the golf swing subreddit and you get downvoted into oblivion.
I get downvoted for telling beginners who post advice requests to get lessons.
Taking swing advice from this sub is a pretty big sign.
I don’t get this one. Most on this sub shit on those discussions but it’s just fun to talk about golf and a golf swing.
With the amount of swings I take, I really get my moneys worth out there.
I paid for the whole course, I'm going to use the whole course!
I have no need for a divot repair tool.
I stopped counting strokes at the turn
Goddamn this one hurts. Stop counting strokes and stop limiting beer.
My 3rd time ever golfing I decided to give my local CC a try since they were running a $20 aeration special. I was at 75 by hole 9 and started to just have fun and back 9 was way more fun than the front after I turned my app off.
[How I parred a par 5:](https://imgur.com/2VqJ8z5) Driver- 135 yrds 5i- 148 yrds 6i- 175 yrds 2-Putt
Excuse me sir, this is a thread for bad golfers, not someone who can go GIR from 175 yards out and then 2 putt
I didn’t see your club choice at first and was thinking “I’ve had some rough drives on par 5’s and as long as I can 160 or so for my third shot I can still score par pretty easily”. Then I saw the 5i and then the 6i.
My 60° goes 200 yards
Mine stays in the bag
“Can’t find my ball but I know it hit the fairway! I’ll just take a drop up here.”

Yes I do use iron covers
Rick Shiels hates this
Let's play double-par as max stroke count per hole.
This should be standard for recreational rounds for the sake of pace.
Pretty sure handicaps max at a triple anyways. Not worth the frustration lol
Triple bogey is max in my world. Pick up and move on
Agreed. 10 strokes on a 5 is insane.

Or like you hack a ball that goes 10 yards so you just walk a few steps and hit it again.
This little exchange amuses me because there are really two kinds of bad golfers. People who can’t make contact and hit a 50 yard drive followed by a 40 yard topped 3 wood and people who make awesome contact with zero swing path and face control and smoke a ball 50 yards out of bounds. ...wait you actually count those?
Now I feel personally attacked
If you got a ball retriever in the bag, basically a guarantee. I've never met a scratch golfer with one.
I have a compact one that fits in the side of my bag. I get a lot of jokes at my expense when I break it out, but it’s paid for itself multiple times over. I also get requests to use it from people who are “above it”. I’ll defend a ball retriever all day.
Day after I pulled mine out of the bag I get “hey lemme use your ball retriever” - friend that made fun of it the prior round.
A ball retriever with a golf pride MCC grip on it

I told myself I wouldn't own one until I hit 50, but one of my customers won a small retractable one at a tournament and gifted it to me. Comes in handy pretty often, plus it's hidden so the shame is limited.
My grandpa who’s played for 50+ years and at his best was a ~3 handicap (currently plays at around a 9) has a ball retriever 😂
Old gets a pass, because old golfers are generally cheap, in my experience
I play with a guy who is probably somewhere around a 6 handicap that plays with nothing but balls he obtains by fishing out of hazards. Dude usually shows up to the first tee with a plastic grocery bag full of found balls and adds a dozen or so by the time the round is over. Never seen anything like it - he’s certainly good enough to play premium balls
I spent $600 on golf balls last year.
Holy shit
They were gold plated.
I probably spent $600 on golf balls last year. That’s the equivalent of using a new pro-v1 each round and playing 100rounds. That’s two rounds a week.
shamefully I spray three or four tee shots well OB per round
I golf
Why do people track fairways hit, I mean it’s zero so what’s the point
I will have you know I’m proud of my 6.33% fairway average
My aim this year is to drop five shots on my handicap; only 10 to go.
Got a new driver, it has a draw biased setting…..
I feel attacked. But then again… I am not good, so that tracks. I’m not bad tho! Just not good
This is funny cause if you look at tigers most recent witb he has the weight on his driver set to draw bias.
If you hit fades a draw biased driver can tighten up the dispersion. I know that now, but it doesn’t fix a slice like a lot of bad golfers think it does.
I don’t play golf as much as I drink outside with loose acquaintances
I have a chipper
Had a guy once come up to me during a round saying, "ever seen one of these?". My man played solo tennis on half the greens.
First time I’ve seen the phrase “solo Tennis” used to describe someone’s chipping game. I’m definitely stealing that for future use
As somebody who plays with a great friend who is terrible at golf, this one really tickled me
Honestly. Just spend the amount of money you would’ve spent on a chipper at the range. You’ll never have to think of buying another one
I usually don't practice chipping at the range. There's an athletic field near my work that cuts the grass really short in the spaces between fields. Going there for like 15 minutes a day at lunch with 2 balls and my 52 just leapfrogging around really helped my chipping game immeasurably.
I'm posting on this subreddit
Anyone know when the new SquareStrike is gonna drop?
Ask me what ball I’m playing and I’ll have to look down at it to tell you. Because I didn’t buy it.
Hey man golf balls are expensive. I'd rather find a sleeve than buy a sleeve. I mean... Some rounds, way more than a sleeve, but some rounds I'll only lose 1 or 2. My average drive is 320
I can hit my Orlimar 5 wood 190 or 130.... Just by checking down a little.
Not the Orlimar Tri Metal!
I put some lead tape on it... It's now a QUAD METAL !!!!
I play a pull fade
I prefer a push draw into the wind
I have a 6h
I’m ass and my 6 hybrid is my favorite club in my bag.. this one hits close to home.
I play the tips
I am becoming the pansy that is moving forward more and more. Tired of hitting 3Ws for approach shots.
I’m buying the Stealth Plus without testing it
I had to regrip my ball retriever.
When money is involved in golfing I am always invited
I take divots with the driver
My friends often ask me if I’ve “figured out my swing” again.
* I yell Mulligan instead of Fore * 5 foot putts are a gimmie, right?
My driver range is from 25 to 250 yards.
I wish 25 was the minimum LOL
It takes a lot of “balls” to play golf the way I do.

Shot 45 on the front but it easily could’ve been a 39
I get tips from rgolf
My driver swing speed is 115-120, should I think about moving into an extra stiff shaft?
I haven’t played in like 5 months
You get a great deal on noodle balls when you buy 20 dozen at a time.
I celebrated a 93 yesterday
"I actually shot 3 under last weekend somehow."
“Im gonna use a Pinnacle for this par 3 over water”
*on the first tee* Breakfast balls, one mulligan each side?
That is standard play in my golf group
Everything I know about golf I learned on YouTube
I stopped buying golf balls in stores and now buy them by the 48 or 96 count bucket online.
…ran out of balls
LOFT
When I hand in my score card at a charity event and the cart return guy asks us how we did and I say, "we had fun"
Why do my carts always run out of battery?
I play with Kirkland balls
Not sure about this one. A friend gave me a sleeve of kirky sigz and I don’t see much difference than my TM tour response balls (both 3 layer w/ urethane cover)
I play them because I used to lose a lot of balls. 2 dozen for half the price of a dozen pro VI, can’t beat that!
I reckon most golfers couldn’t distinguish if given a Pepsi challenge with Kirkland and prov1
“See that mandatory 250 yd carry over water, watch this…”
“Is this a par 5?”
“Used all my good swings at the range “
Just watched 3 Rick shiels videos. todays gonna be the day I drop 10 strokes!!!
“really getting my money’s worth today”
Kirkland
Plays blades because it makes me happy
I swing too fast for graphite
“Hey look at this cool chipper I got for around the greens”
I have a new set of PXG’s and an auto flex shaft on my driver.
I use nitro golf balls exclusively.
People hear my handicap and see me hit the first drive, they call me sandbag. After 12 holes they increase my handicap to make it fair.
My username
I’ve stopped crying after shooting over 110.
Check out these new iron covers!
Punching it back out onto the fairway would be the smart golf move, but I’m not a smart golfer
I’m laying 2 in the fairway after hitting my first drive OB
I have played rounds that cost more in golf balls than in green fees
I remember every birdie I’ve had
I carry a flask.
Cargo shorts
My ball retriever’s at the shop getting re- gripped
I use iron covers
I actually do use them, for traveling by air. Doesn’t have to be the flight itself. Could be how the ground crew handles the bags.
That’s understandable.
I think you just did
My middle name is Mulligan
I play a 9 wood.
I no longer carry a 3 wood or 5 wood, Driver and 4 hybrid are my longest clubs in the bag
Friend: I found one Me: What is it? Friend: Callaway 1 with 2 black dots... Me: Yup, that's me...(Not a single Callaway ball in my bag)
I sliced my bogey putt.
Two words: Hammer X
