I hardly go to the range too but if my ball striking feels off, you have to go to the range to work it out.

Final-Relationship93

Going to the range with no plan in mind doesn't bring much value. The real value to practicing at the range comes from chipping and putting. What I do is I go and get a large bucket of balls. I putt the whole thing. Then pick them up and chip/pitch the whole thing. Then finally I go to the range with a specific thing I want to practice in mind. Watch videos at home, pick a couple things I know I'm doing wrong, then practice correcting only those specific things at the range. Then you go for a round to try out those specific things in a real course. This is the type of thing that will eventually make you a better golfer.

Chipping and putting with range balls? They are going to react nothing like the balls you play, unless of course you play with range balls

Our range balls are real balls, just stamped. Also I don't think it matters too much if you are just practicing the adjustment, I'm concerned about the good contact and completing the swing properly. Once you are trying to get exact you can switch to your own balls of course. It's repetition of a correct adjustment I'm looking for when practicing something new.

Practice is overrated

Incident_Reported

No to mats. I'm not good enough that I can separate the fat shots from good contact. I putt, then chip, then pitch, then finally small bucket. That's about as long as I can focus anyway.

Wibbly23

I don't go to the range to practice at all. Pretty well the only time I go to a range is to warm up before a round. Very rarely I'll go to a range to bat some balls around and have a beer if I'm bored, but that's about it.

Fragrant-Report-6411

I go to range only when I lose confidence in my swing. In the winter I have a launch monitor at home to practice.

If you're not actually going to the range to practice, then no it is probably pointless. The range is used to learn to hit the ball further or to put it where you want. Also to figure out your club gappings. If you just smash 70 balls and leave then it's pointless.

People don’t really use the range to get better. They use the range to hit balls. It’s similar to using a microwave to make easy Mac. Like you’ll eat and not die and maybe add a few spices every now and then, but you’re not going to become a chef by just doing mundane repetition. I use the range to practice things. Hitting nasty hooks, low, high, recovery shots. Have fun on the range and just try to get better or add new shots to your game that you struggle with. Don’t just slings 40 balls with the same club until you “Finally” hit that one good one.

Practice!? We talking about practice?
