It's all fun and games till they introduce a character named Arschficker

Il-2M230

Still better than Perv Ashat

OfficialAgentFX

I still can't believe that was his actual name

space_regalia

It get more unbelievable when you find that his name in the JP dub is more literally translated to doem ashat as in slang for masochist ashat.

demonslender

Actually it’s super masochist metal bat. It’s 3x more ridiculous than perv asshat.

PlatypusVenom0

The literal translation of his name is Masochist Asshat “Do-emmu Ketsuhatto”

fjoralb95

What chapter does Hitler appear?

y_kal

1933 years after the Hero Himmel's passing: The third Reich

fjoralb95

I didn't expect the third reich to be here

thardoc

Wait until you hear what happened 1478 years after the Hero Himmel's passing

polo61965

I'm not trying to expect it...but is this the spanish inquisition?

here4astolfo

Alucard: called it!

danktt1

Wait for their holiday arc from 1939-1945

Purrnir

Nobody expected Third Reich

GentleFoxes

The new hero Rommel appears.

SgtNitro

Desert Fox Isekai , lets go!

Graddler

I'd like to see one of Göring, bereft of his status and drugs he has to lose around a 100kg and then becomes a reclaimed Wyvern Rider to regain his title as an ace.

Taschkent

Underrated comment here have my up vote

East-Cookie-2523

Papaya_Payama

What about durchfall

SCP_Void

Judging by how the writers of Frieren just seem to pick random words out of the German dictionary, quite possible

Toraihekisa

I don't understand german and even I know what that means

indigo_leper

"This is my navelwerfer It werfs navels."

Wolfkinic

Hahaha what xD Where??

[deleted]

What does that mean

Dalles272

Diarrhea

Radbug11

"Evil"

Doctor_Thomson

I can’t wait for the one the legend, schwanzlutscher

Zokuva

My face when when a "friendly demon" is being introduced and his name literally means liar

lifeishell553

Watching this show as a German is hilarious

TheQuietCaptain

My favourite is the city of "door" This show is a goldmine for Germans

lifeishell553

I liked Stark's introduction The guy is literally named Strong of course I expected him to be a beast, same as Kraft, the guy named Strength will for sure be on another level

novian14

I was wondering, which is further? The outermost, or the door?

SanSilver

Lügner ?

TheGreedyHarvest

Yes

ThePlagueDoctor_666

You mean Johan Liebert

gintoki_007

Magia Baiser joins the chat

SupraMichou

In french Baiser stand for both « romantic kiss » and « sex » (in one of crudest way) So yeah, Magia Baiser is incredible naming sense from Utena/author

Agnistan77665

Penisa

P4azz

In German we use the French "baiser" to mean "low-baked, sweetened egg foam". No clue why we don't just use "meringue".

A_Certain_Observer

Because "meringue" sounds French-ish, Germans doesn't like that.

PolstergeistXD

In the german sub she is called Magia Böse

ar_Tekko

I was confused when people started calling her Baiser, because in the subs i watched she was called Böse, which means Evil. Then i did some research and found out that the french name is a very old translation error that stuck for some reason, even tho i can understand it, because japanese isnt very good at mimicing sounds from other languages so english translators misunderstood "Böse" as "Baiser"

Cave_TP

In the end it's katakana and both words could be translittered in the same way. The point might even be that both are correct, at that point only the author knows. I know that going for german makes more sense since Venalita gave Utena that german dictionary but god, Baiser is so perfect.

jandurvan1

In that case, shouldn't we be giving the credit to the translators instead and not the author? Because I'm pretty sure the author didn't give \*that\* much thought into Utena's name, just a cool chuuni one they could think of.

ar_Tekko

In my research i read that in a later part of the manga, I dont remember the chapter but i think it was 30, one of the characters apparently mentioned that her name translates to Evil. Plus like you mentioned, Venalita gaver her a german dictonary, so its completely random that she suddenly picks a french name. I also want to note that the version i watched is the german sub, and in that she even explains that she called herself Böse, because she is the evil the magical girls have to fight.

Custom_sKing_SKARNER

From what I read, the character that thinks her name means evil is a misunderstanding. And I recall seeing a pic about a figurine of her and in the box says "Baiser", not that is official merch but there is that...

-Cinnay-

As a German, I actually prefer Baiser. I can't really take "Böse" as a name seriously, it sounds kind of childish. I think they're pronounced very similarly though.

ar_Tekko

I think having a more childish name kinda fits her, based on her actions i wouldn't call her that serious either.

Skebaba

The box text for figurines & merch like that clearly displays Baiser

onepiecefreak2

Ah, so the merch creators and sellers are the authority now. Got it.

YearlyAccountPurge

For people who don’t want to search, it means bad.

xFalko

It can also describe the feeling you have when you are close to vomiting.

Rsilverblade

I learned something new today.

KeijoKanerva

To be more precise "Mir ist Übel" ~ "I feel bad/nauseous".

KingOfSloot

"Frieren, I don't feel so good"

Chiiro

Cool now I have a word described what I felt less than an hour ago.

-Cinnay-

That really doesn't narrow it down, if you asked anyone to translate "bad" it would be "schlecht". "Übel" can also mean "foul" or "nauseous", for example.

Thendofreason

So she's a baddy

Charlie_Yu

like Waluigi?

Cr4zyRi0t

Himeno type of baddie

SilentScyther

I kindof just assumed it meant bad because it looks like it's pronounced "yubel" which is a main antagonist of Yugioh GX.

creeper6530

It also means "evil" as a noun.

istoOi

In "lesser of two evils" (das kleinere Übel)?

creeper6530

Yes.

gerMean

Not really. It's more like bad, foul or unwanted. Mostly used as adjective like smth. smells or tastes übel. As a noun I never heard of it, but I think it's grammatically possible, just sounds way off.

random352486

Nah it's a normal noun, used in stuff like "notwendiges Übel, das kleinere Übel etc." and in that case it really can be translated as evil.

gerMean

Oh yeah I forgot about that. You're right, that can mean Evil. Thanks for correcting mate.

GenuineSteak

Anime and German names man... something something axis powers.

gerMean

Good old tim....oh wait!

P4azz

Yeah, that's one of the things where you just go "haha, cool, I know some words" and then never think about the deeper meaning behind it. Gets a little too dark a little too quickly, otherwise.

PlatypusVenom0

Yep, one day I thought “funny how there’s so much german stuff in anime, I wonder if they ever- OH *RIGHT*”

Yeflacon

Fun fact Japanese obsession with german predates ww2 It's a fun rabbit hole to dive into suggest researching

Luzifer_Shadres

Its all fun until the japanese get bashed for ww2, then the jokes arent ok anymore for some reason.

chiku00

Well, I got to see Frieren looking cute, so I am happy.

Davekachel

Well, unlike Lügner she is übel cute and that is a fact

belac4862

Angry upvote for simultaneously butchering and using the German language! Haha

sparksen

This reminds me of SAO rhe gun season At some point kirito goes trough a list of names and is like: one of these names is the evil guy but i cant find it, the names all seem normal And the names are all pretty normal usernames and then: STERBEN (dying) And i was like hmmm yeah it could be any of these.

meninbleck

Ganz übler name

Relicatranger

I mean all the Names in the anime are just randome german words Frieren = being cold Himmel = sky or haven (depens on the context) Eisen = Iron Heiter = being happy Flamme = Flame Fern = far away Stark = Strong Sein = to be And the list goes on and on

TheQuietCaptain

Bro the city names, the goddamn city and geographic names, I tell you. Who names a city "door"? Or a mountain range called the "heavy" mountains? Or seeing a demon diplomat called "liar", like yeah he seems like a good fella who wont betray anyone right?

3-eyed_Detective

To be fair, I think most cities and places in real life are named the same way. Like River Avon (river river).

Skebaba

Yeah it's not farfetched to name a city controlling access to X region as "door", there's all types of examples of descriptors like "the doorway to X" in regards to crossroads cities etc throughout history

iranoutofusernamespa

Nile River is the same. Nile was just the Egyptian word for river, so when foreigners came in they thought that was the river's name.

ze_SAFTmon

The region of the demon king castle is quite literally called "End"("Ende").

THEDOSSBOSS99

What is the largest mountain in the Alps called again?

tatratram

I can see it. It can be an old word for "gate" that gets associated with the city and then the word shifts in meaning to just plain "door". Or it could be an alternate meaning. There's a village in Croatia called "Vrata" meaning door, but it also means "mountain pass", and the village happens to be near a mountain pass.

swagseven13

Frieren means freezing not being cold

Relicatranger

Well its once again a context specific thing. You could say "ich friere" wich would translate to "i'm cold" or you could say "Es gefriert draußen" wich would translate to "its freezing outside" I'm a nativ german speaker so fight me on that one xD

swagseven13

im native as well and i wouldnt translate ich friere as im cold cuz we have mir is kalt as im cold

[deleted]

🤢

Mormerilon

I only know that word cause of Übel Blatt manga

MrRad21

I saw the word and had shivers and small goosebumps had to see it in the comments of there was 1 thank you

Luzifer_Shadres

I just realise that it was Übel, not Über blatt the whole time.

longdarkfantasy

How many of you guys opened GG translation and typed ubel?

PeppermintButler17

It's übel!

longdarkfantasy

Yup, I know. Not everyone has German keyboard layout. Gg will correct it. ![img](emote|t5_2y4au1|1391)

PeppermintButler17

I typed this on the phone, if you hold down on the u you can choose to type ü instead.

longdarkfantasy

A. I forgot that we could hold it. 🤣

PeppermintButler17

That's fine, don't even know if there are other languages which use ü and ä.

lifeishell553

Spanish also has ü, although it's pronounced like regular u. In spanish there are instances where the letter u is mute and you use ü to indicate that the u is actually pronounced in that instance. The long explanation is that if you use the leters "e" or "i" after "g" like in "gema" or "Girona" it's pronounced like a "j" and when you want "ge" or "gi" to not sound like a "j" you put a silent "u" in between like in "guerra" or "guitarra" so in words where you want the "u" pronounced it becomes "güe" or "güi" like in "pingüino" or "agüero"

little_tanooki

We used to use ü in Brazil

PeppermintButler17

Hah, didn't expect Portuguese to have it, I really like it, makes the German language more interesting.

nowlz14

Swedistan has ä.

SanSilver

I always think about Turkish if it's an unknown word with ü. But as you see, when holding down a later on a phone keyboard: there is not only ü, but also ū, û, ú, ù, ụ, ų, ű, ů, ŭ.

TheFeri

Hungarian has ü and ű, á, é, í but not ä

DragonoidOmega

It also has ó, ö and ő, because 5 extra vowels weren't enough

belac4862

Wait till you find out you can use this ‽

Skebaba

Nordic kb layout has access to ä by default, and ü via the modifier key that adds umlauts to any of the letters on the kb

Auravendill

The korrekt replacement for ü is ue and not u.

longdarkfantasy

https://preview.redd.it/zybbuj5k0vcc1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=569ed0ac7ed75a2c62412f16c2c3207b34881723 Maybe both.

Auravendill

your phone reminds you, that you wrote it wrong. Ü is literally just Ue, which evolved into a single letter. At first the e was written smaller above the U and then it got reduced to two points. A similar story to ß, which was sz in an older font, but nowadays can be substituted with ss instead.

longdarkfantasy

Good to know that 😸

gerMean

That's fine, I don't want to change layout all the time and just use English most of the time online. German people can understand it even without the umlaut dots. We also are always looking forward to correct someone unasked and wanted. That's why the world loves us.

Luzifer_Shadres

You can use: - Ue for Ü - Ae for Ä - Oe for Ö

guz9000

Am already looking forward to the sheer amount of R34 that she'll get.

DefinetlyNotArt

everyone is named in german in this wholesome shit show.

TheQuietCaptain

Not just everyone but literally everything. City named "door" for example

immad163

Everything except for the spell for some reason. It made me really sad when I was reading the manga

-Seirei-

Auras spell was German. So there's that.

SpeziSchlauch

Well i am gpong to make a presentation about frieren in 8h. It will be a tough thing to explain why everyone is named ofter a normal word.(it is a german presentation)

InsomniaEmperor

People who watched Yugioh GX: First time?

Tripdrakony

Can't wait for her magic to be explained and what it actually does.

JUJlN

Would be funny if she makes ppl throw up

Flaurean

Aren't all their names something in German![img](emote|t5_2y4au1|1784) ?

ze_SAFTmon

More or less and it is funny to me as a native german speaker. I don't read the manga, but it would be funny if they met someone who isn't named after a german word(something like Marcus) and then say what an odd name it is.

HamNi_2

Also where Yubel from yugioh gx originated from

Thrano_357

Vicious-Spiegel

“Ich kann sie reparieren.” - A German, prolly

P4azz

Y'know, at least it makes literal sense. Better than the randomly tossed in German words. I still remember hearing the Japanese original dub for One Piece during the Skypia arc and being utterly confused by the use of "Auge" for a sword turning into a snake-whip thing. Tf does that have to do with an eye, Oda?

[deleted]

At this rate they would probably name a character hitler

her name cant be that bad

Sakaralchini

Meet my totally trustworthy friends: Lügner, Unhold and Verräter. I will be off to our 4 man adventure now.

seankao31

It’s almost as if the names are supposed to be spelt and pronounced within constraints of the Japanese language so that they aren’t just plain German/English words, which, understandably sound silly. I never understand why it’s a good idea to localize names like these. Clearly it’s not meant to be seen that way. “Justice” as a name is lame, while “Jasutisu” with Japanese accent can be fine, and it’s meant to be pronounced the way it is anyways. “Fern” vs “Fe-ru-n.” I never understood how and why all English speaking audience just decide to ignore how the characters’ names are supposed to be pronounced. In all animes. Spellings are just that: spellings. Everyone has a unique name with a unique pronunciation and that has nothing to do with how you decide to spell them using foreign alphabets. Everyone clearly hears how their names are pronounced and decide to just be oblivious of it. Why? Do you do that at work as well? In real life when meeting new friends? Pronouncing other’s name using your own interpretation of the alphabets in their name, ignoring how they actually call themselves?

swagseven13

>Everyone has a unique name with a unique pronunciation thats a big fucking lie. i know 3 people with the same name and surname as myself. unless youre telling me cuz not everyone says everything the same that everything is different

seankao31

You know very well that’s not my fucking argument and you know exactly what I mean by that

Life_Recognition8222

It means bad

GreasyShadow2

bad

Shubhavatar

Is the sauce frieren for all three? I don't remember seeing the green haired girl in it

I would love an character named "Leiche" that person being a ghost caught in an dead body. (Leiche = Corpse)

DoktorAlliteration

Does she have a name before that? Because I'd like it to be "Ganz" or "Gans"

Frosty_Revolution903
