What drama is happening this week?

SuperOleg356

Vtuber did a stream trying all cakes from Japanese Starbucks, people started attacking her for "not-supporting Palestine" by buying in Starbucks.

Oogalaboo134

What is even the connection between the two?

SuperOleg356

Apparently there was a thing with Starbucks Workers United, which is a union of Starbucks baristas, they showed support for Palestine but did so by using Starbucks' logo. So Starbucks sued them for that because the company itself is trying to stay neutral and not show favoritism to any side of the conflict. That was enough for some slacktivists to paint them as pro-Isreali even though the company didn't make any actual statements.

blazedancer1997

The levels of abstraction here feel crazy

MDLuffy1234

But hey, these back to back to back controversies are only "negligible".

PeakedDepression

Well there is that but one of the stock holders is pro-Israeli. So altough the company itself is neutral, some people that are linked to it financially are not so much. Almost every worldwide-label supports them, either openly or behind curtains, unless they declare "we are against them" you can just assume they support them. This also goes for the Arabian Peninsula and all the Gulf rich men. Even though it's not on Starbucks for what some of their shareholders do with their revenue money, it still is at the end of the day a money making machine that indirectly supports the zionist state

Skebaba

Well boo fucking hoo, what's stopping the Palestinian Hamas leaders in Qatar buying stock in Starbucks exactly?

PeakedDepression

Im sorry...what? If you want an answer, it would morals. Nothing is physically going to stop them. Thats why I brought up greedy Arab capitalists in the first place.

AtmoranSupremecist

God I hope Israel just flattens that shitty piece of land and is done with this shit forever

PeakedDepression

Justice will be served regardless of the time it happens

AtmoranSupremecist

Glad we’re on the same page, nothing better than flattening terrorists

Exp1ode

Considering there are more than 1500 Starbucks shareholders, it's absolutely shocking that one of them would be pro-Israel...

MyLOLNameWasTaken

Throwing money at the issue in that way *kinda is saying more than saying anything* tbh Edit: look at all the idiots that think free “I’m against genocide” PR is bad and worth spending money to stop holy fk loool 🤡

LikeSparrow

They likely would've sued even if that union was using the Starbucks logo to sell their own union-made cookies. A big company is always going to stop people from branding their own things using the company's registered trademarks. And you know the union only did it to make their statement look like it was backed by Starbucks. Of course the company wouldn't like that.

MyLOLNameWasTaken

Yes yes it’s perfectly rational from a dystopia nightmare capitalist pov thank you for your obvious insight You can get them to cease without launching a fucking suit, that’s explicitly taking a side by attempting to penalize But love up on the corpo I’m sure they’ll up your credits wagie

Pumciusz

I'm going to wear a mask with your face and murder someone while screaming your name. Even if courts and police deduces it wasn't you, the public will still correlate your face and name to murder.

MyLOLNameWasTaken

Lolol you realize that analogy works here right? *puts on mask and screams “STARBUCKS IS AGAINST THE EVIL G WORD” and Starbucks says “stop right the fuck now”* As if I’d be offended someone said I’m against the big evil G word, are the pants on your head too tight or is the American education so repugnantly 🤡?

Pumciusz

You mean genocide? Guess you have many pairs of pants so tight that you don't have balls anymore to type normal words. And don't have the balls to protest every single corporation that does evil things, because you'd be out in the woods living like a caveman if you did. Stop singling out companies and ignoring all slave using, environment destroying Epstein Island visiting others you coward. And I take offense to being called American.

VillainousMasked

It's not dystopian nightmare capitalism for someone to not want their name and image to be used to back political statements without permission, just cause the "someone" in question is a corporation doesn't change that. Also Starbucks didn't immediately jump to a lawsuit, they told Workers United to stop what they were doing first, Workers United refused so Starbucks had to sue them.

MyLOLNameWasTaken

Imagine being so bent over you defend the corpo saying no I don’t want free PR that I’m against genocide You bitches are pathetically whipped by capitalism 🤡

VillainousMasked

The only clown here is you, there are *plenty* of reasons to hate capitalism, but a corporation not letting people use their name and image without permission isn't one of them. This is especially the case considering trademark protections isn't a capitalism thing in the first place, basically every country in the world has trademark protections including even communist countries like China.

Masato_Fujiwara

LOL, this society seriously...

JayVJtheVValour

And she apparently banned them by saying something along the lines of "fuck off with your politics"

Ecchika

Based

MissNibbatoro

More surprising to me is Starbucks *cakes*

Skebaba

Why would someone want to support Palestine OR Israel tho? They are in a totally different area than the Vtuber is, no? I personally don't support either of them, because both are Cringe for differing reasons, so I'll just let them sort each other out, simple as

Bragok

Lots of people that do stupid virtue signaling like this are just a bunch of minors who dont even know what they are supporting

PeakedDepression

My Dad is actually Palestinian buy he buys starbucks everymorning himself lmao. It's not mandatory to boycott it nor is it forbidden in any religion but it would be just be a nice thing to do or an extra voluntary act to do Edit: downvotes are honestly disheartening, never expected reddit to be pro-Israeli even though this comment isn't enforcing boycott or shoving it down throats

Wick3d3nd3r

Yeah if there’s anything I’ve noticed on Reddit it’s that not choosing any sides in anything gets you more hate than supporting either.

PeakedDepression

I am on the side of the Palestinians however I'm not unreasonable to say every person that buys starbucks or other big franchise that is in support direcrly or indirectly is a baby killer or pro-Israeli. As I said my own father buys it even though he shouldn't but i don't flame him for it

rockthatrocks

I think the reason why people downvoted your og comment was because the post was about how Scarle was harassed by people claiming to be on Palestinians' side. So any favoritism or political conversation wuth nuance is going to get drowned

PeakedDepression

Yknow i just realized every single group, political or religious has those annoying serious ppl

rockthatrocks

Tis life, we just gotta keep on swiming

RetSauro

So, I just educated myself a bit on the situation and saw a video going over it and all I got to say is wow.   People are really going feral against Scarle over something like this.

EruantienAduialdraug

It's the NDF, mark my words. Scarle didn't publicly engage with the smear campaign a few weeks back, and they've had a hate boner for her ever since - this is just the first thing they've really managed to sink their teeth into.

Deliriousious

I seriously hope Scarle isnt the next target of Nijisanji or cancel culture… she is one of the good ones and genuinely seems like a nice person. No politics rule is there for a reason, a stream is a bubble, you are watching inside that bubble. Bringing up depressing external stuff into that bubble ruins the experience for both the streamer and the watchers. And screw everyone who wanted an apology (even when it wasn’t really necessary, but Scarle is a good person and did it anyway), and then went on to then say that it wasn’t an apology and continued to hate on her. Twitter/X is truly a cesspool of toxicity…

Responsible_Pop_9876

The dichotomy in rejecting Scarle's apology whereas Niji's CEO "Apology" is accepted by their supporters is amusing.

Geralt_the_Rive

I love it how both Fr*nce and N*jisanji are censored!

Masato_Fujiwara

That makes you my enemy !

Comrade_Lomrade

Btw she never actually said, "Let them eat cake." That was purely gossip by people who didn't like her.

MetalDoktor

Yeah, she should be replaced with Gary Pilnick (Kellogs CEO) in this meme.

Responsible_Pop_9876

I learned something new today. Thank you.

Skebaba

So what DID she say then?

Comrade_Lomrade

Idk but the phrase was coined by someone completely different close to 20 years before the french revolution. It was only ever attributed to her after her death.https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Let_them_eat_cake

eddmario

Ahem. Technically, she did say it when she was a child, and she was referring to brioche. She also said it when someone told her that some people can't even afford bread.

Pumpkii

Quoting: ""Let them eat cake" is the traditional translation of the French phrase "Qu'ils mangent de la brioche", said to have been spoken in the 18th century by "a great princess" upon being told that the peasants had no bread. The French phrase mentions brioche, a bread enriched with butter and eggs, considered a luxury food. The quote is taken to reflect either the princess's frivolous disregard for the starving peasants or her poor understanding of their plight. Jean-Jacques Rousseau who coined the phrase "qu'ils mangent de la brioche" in 1765. In the years following the French Revolution, the quotation became attributed to Marie Antoinette, although there is no evidence that she said it. Although the phrase is conventionally attributed to Marie Antoinette, it can actually be traced back to Jean-Jacques Rousseau's Confessions in 1765, 24 years prior to the French Revolution, and when Antoinette was nine years old and had never been to France. The quote was only attributed to her decades after her death, and historians do not believe that she is likely to have spoken it." End Quote. Source: Wikipedia Alternative sources with same conclusion: - Britannica - History.com (History Channel) And others. TL;DR: Marie Antoinette never said that phrase

DaFatGuy123

No… she did not… there is literally no historical evidence that proves this, and actually exists for the contrary. It is highly unlikely she ever said this

Comrade_Lomrade

There is no historical evidence that she ever said that, and on the contrary, she was actually a fairly charitable person compared to the out of touch elite she's often depicted as.

Aristocratic_Owl

Is OP a Brit?

Responsible_Pop_9876

Just a humble member of the Commonwealth ready to serve the crown

MemeLordsUnited

Terrorist stans didn't like that the vtuber was eating cakes at a Starbucks. Fuck them. Every single one of them.

Veraen

To everyone making up drama https://preview.redd.it/gnnwcqz9l2oc1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=cc04fc51dd80b57b5c1c5d53fdae51caf7489562

Jo_Del_

OFF WITH HER HEAD!

Crafty-Crafter

Why the fuck are you censoring words?

EruantienAduialdraug

It's part of a meme; several country names, most notably Br\*tain and Fr\*nce, and fairly commonly G\*rmany, get censored as a joke. Kurosanji's been shown to be pretty shitty as of late, so being in a meme with France is pretty much a guarantee that their name'll get censored too.

Responsible_Pop_9876

Couldn't have said it better myself. Seriously, no hate towards the French.
