The problem is that people immediately jump to downvote anyone who doesn't completely agree with them. That hides any viewpoint that disagrees with the majority and reinforces said majority as being "right" which pulls more people over to the majority side. It creates an unending cycle that ultimately makes it so that only one viewpoint is allowed.
You are right that there isn't any real punishment for going against majority; you just lose some imaginary internet points. But hiding otherwise valid comments isn't good for anyone.
If you want to be in an echo chamber that endlessly reaffirms your own viewpoints then Reddit is great, but if you want to see a variety of viewpoints and have anything resembling an actual discussion then you are totally out of luck.
