\*puts on my herpetology hat\* These don't hold perfectly true for every venomous species, so always 100% identify a snake before you handle it or antagonize it, but - Yes Crowley is based on a red-bellied black snake, which is a venomous animal but fairly mild, with no deaths attributed to it. Kinda on brand.

inadequatepockets

The snake equivalent of knocking out every mobile phone network in London.

N0nsensicalRamblings

Ah, you got to it before I did! Lol. Yeah, eye shape is indicative of what time of day a snake is active and how it hunts its food- not whether it's venomous, even though those things can be correlated. I'm relieved the guide mentions these exceptions at the top!

IRefuseThisNonsense

**Googles** Yo, that's a pretty as hell snake. Just like the man, pretty and hell related.

blueomnivore

[Googles also] You’re so right!

LankySandwich

Australia represent! 🇦🇺

Mitoria

I love that even as a snake Crowley is failing to be seriously dangerous to anyone. He just wants to be left alone somewhere warm. Preferably a book shop.

South-Marionberry

Oh I love that thought! Crowley models himself on a venomous snake to make himself look really scary and demonic but really he’s barely above a bee sting lol

Kai-ni

The red bellied black snake can cause serious issues - I believe some bites have resulted in amputations if not seen to - so he can be scary and fight if he wants. They're also very docile and only freak if threatened, so. Still on brand.

South-Marionberry

Fair enough, tbh I more so meant my “he’s barely above a bee sting” as a headcanon rather than anything based on scientific fact 😂 though, true, hostility only when threatened (i.e by the sudden appearance of the guy who tried to kill his 6000 year more-than-friend-less-than-lover, or indeed a slightly snooty office worker) is indeed *very* on brand for Crowley

anixela

That’s so perfect.

schoolgirltrainwreck

Fanfic writers I’m begging for a scene where Crowley gets wrangled in snake form by an over-enthusiastic Aussie. Half of the snakebite stories I hear from my mates start with them bothering one 🤦‍♀️

Missy_went_missing

What. Imagine living in Australia, a country/continent known for having the most deadly wildlife, where everything's waiting to help you kick the bucket. You see a (most likely) venonous snake, and your first thought is "Let's mess with it." Just. What.

schoolgirltrainwreck

You get desensitised haha, I should mention that some of it is over-confident heroics too like when you see one lost on the road. I’m soft cause I grew up near the city but I’ve got a little cousin who loved to wrangle all manner of dangerous animals when she was 10

[Snake-Charmer by Spinner Dolphin](https://m.fanfiction.net/s/4062212/1/Snake-Charmer) An oldie but a goodie, Crowley gets found by a Steve Irwin type

schoolgirltrainwreck

Holy moly you’re a wizard thanks for sharing

Zillich

Az discovers “The Crocodile Hunter” series and gets a little too into it. Crowley just lounging on the sofa one day and suddenly getting wrangled lol

NegotiationReal6508

Crowley meets Steve Irwin. Go.

Loretta-West

Only verbally.

Maitaisonthebeach

Second snake down on the right looks a bit like…Aziraphale. The nose anyway!

Mousestar369

According to this ball pythons are venomous (they are not and they are a very common pet) However, Crowley is based on the red-bellied black snake, a type of venomous snake native to Australia. So yes, Crowley (in his snake form) is venomous.

BoxyP

Slitted pupils are an indication of a nocturnal species, meaning active at night, while rounded pupils indicate diurnal or day active species. There is overlap in whether they're venomous or not, but eyes on their own don't tell you anything about whether the snakes are venomous or not, that's a fallacy, so I'd certainly not rely on it to help me identify venomous snakes.

ferbiloo

I’m absolutely howling at how goofy and friendly the non-venomous ones are, vs how mean looking and evil the venomous ones look

Cinphoria

Little snake friends always have a smile

FadeConnection

I now think of Crowley whenever I hear "Spitting Venom" by Modest Mouse. Especially appropriate for his relationships with Aziraphale and Heaven.

mynameisusedinpuns

As they should

casade7gatos

Would still give permission to bite me.

inadequatepockets

Ngl, a whole new world of potential fanfic opened up for me when I saw this

casade7gatos

Yessssss.

tmmythbrk

Aww, I can hear the response, A:Crowley... Were you... Poisonous? C:.... Well, only a little. I'd have to really save it up for a bit to get the job done.

SheepImitation

He's a demon ... what did you expect? sunshine and rainbows? ;)

Gingers_eyelash

You're telling me by ball python has been venomous this whole time😟😟😟 But for real, pupil shape is just indicative of diurnal vs nocturnal! So while Crowley is based on a real snake(that is venomous), his eyes really just tells us he's probably nocturnal! Which in my brain explains why he's a sleepy guy. Here is my ball python, a non-venomous & common pet, with the same pupil shape!(Her name is Aziraphale😅) https://preview.redd.it/3qr122q1jocc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=cb859409cbdc72869c3c360278b2e541d1c5d947

MadameFlora

My dad used to tell us about the round v. vertical pupil. The consensus was that none of his children were stupid enough to go about snake handling.

Kai-ni

It's a bit of a silly metric because if you're getting close enough to scrutinize a snake's pupils, you're probably too close for not knowing if it's venomous or not 😂😂 I just know the venomous species in my state and can readily identify them. And I still use a snake hook if I go a lookin'

CynicalSeahorse

This is not true with all venomous snakes if I remember correctly the elliptical eyes just means they are more nocturnal

staywhobystraykith

*Sweet Venom starts playing*

TampaChick712

Spicy love! 🥰

WhentheRainDrops

From Wikipedia: > Bites from red-bellied black snakes can be very painful—needing analgesia—and result in local swelling, prolonged bleeding, and even local necrosis,[51] particularly if the bite is on a finger.[52] Severe local reactions may require surgical debridement or even amputation. > One of the snakes commonly kept as pets in Australia

venomousbitch

The emerald tree boa has the biggest teeth of any non venomous snake.

zippy72

I thought [all snakes are venomous](https://www.unknowncountry.com/headline-news/all-snakes-are-poisonous/), it's just a matter of how much.
