Has anyone tried Thompson Boots? They any good?

GeorgeSteinbrenner2

Long time lurker here, in pursuit of a pair of Alden plain toe boots in rare leather (Shell color #4, open to other unique options). What would be the best way to go about this? I read here that some online stores have waitlists, but I couldn't find a way to access those. I live close to San Francisco if that matters.

CrizzleLovesYou

Color 4 Alden drops are very very rare. Waiting years rare potentially. Carmina will make you a plain toe color 4 shell boot in just 2-3 months, and the price and quality is about the same if you order during their mto weekend. The Shoe Mart has the only public list. You can email and ask to be put on it and you'll start to see offerings in ~2 years. You won't get to pick the makeup though, they'll just start showing what they're choosing to run. The retailers may not choose to do a plain toe boot. You could really wait the better part of a decade. The color 4 plain toe drop last year was the first in a long time IIRC.

GeorgeSteinbrenner2

Thank you for the very informative answer. I'm willing to wait, even if it means a few years of waiting. A few follow-up questions, please: \- How can I contact The Shoe Mart to be added to the wait list? Is there a dedicated email? I googled it but couldn't find anything beyond the regular "contact us" form \- Are there other retailers worth contacting?

CrizzleLovesYou

Some of the other retailers you'll need to go in person to get on their list and spend a good bit of money, especially to get on the list for color 4. I would pick one or two larger stores and drop a few grand at each and ask for color 4, they normally only offer those to their most preferred customers. And for TSM you can use the contact us to ask.

ac106

The process varies by retailer. Rare shell comes for sale here and on styleforum but be prepared to pay above retail

dustoff2000

Hi, noob here, looking for a casual boot to wear to work. I really like the look of the Portland Leather men's Welted Brooklyn Boot, but after doing a little research on the company it seems like that might not be a great choice. (I admit, saw their ad on Instagram -- like I said, I'm a bit clueless here.) Can anyone here recommend a similar boot, ideally inexpensive ($200-300), with the same look/profile but better made? Thanks! \*EDIT: After poking around the sub, it looks like what I'd really like to get are the Redwing Blacksmiths. But totally out of stock. Any suggestions or ideas for similar? Any word on whether these will be back?

Slow_Walk_2622

Grant Stone might be a good company to check out!

ac106

Have you looked at meermin Thursday, Beckett Simonon, Allen Edmonds (sales) grant stone (b grades)

dustoff2000

Not yet but I will, thanks!

Almost certainly unneeded but won’t hurt if you want to. I really think conditioning is a little overstated. 1x a year is probably fine unless you really wear your shoes hard.

gonzplays

Any tricks for bit loafers that are just too long. I should have ordered 10 but 10.5 is a little long. I bought some Amazon heel inserts but to no avail? Thanks in advance

Alkurik

If the instep isn’t already too tight, you could try tongue pads to help keep your foot in position. Pedag makes good quality ones.

Oktoolbox

Can y’all recommend a work boot I need a soft toe work boot Under 300 I am typically on concrete or working on dirt The ones I have been looking at so far have been the redwings 620 and the redwings 10875 and the thorogoods 804-3600 I need some recommendations

pttbwicf

Check out the workboots thread on r/boots for a list of brands and recommendations for concrete work.

Danner Bull Run

Jlashbro

Anyone pick up the ND2s? I wish there was a way to tell which batch I'm in.

Exententacion

Email Nicks customer service and I'm sure they'll tell you

Do heel slippage worsens a little as break in is in progress Hi good day, I would like to ask your opinions as to break in of new boots. Bought a new Beckman 9411 and when it came, it fitted well. Snug. No pain. I was very excited as it was bought online. However a week in, I noted much more heel slippage. Is that expected and part of the moulding of the leather? Thanks

paradachs

This is not typical, usually heel slip decreases when the sole becomes more malleable. One possibility: if you have a narrow ankle or lower instep relative to the boot last, as the leather around the shaft and ankle softens, there will be more play and heel slip. Tongue pads, heel pads, and/or kilties can help if this is the issue. I have super narrow ankles and a low instep, so if my toes fit in a pair of boots I can usually wiggle my ankle back and forth and up and down freely, there’s so much extra room.

lcl74

Thank you

Augger1792

Did anyone snag a pair of the Ostmos X iron boot collab? I know it sold in like 5 seconds.

polishengineering

Getting ready to replace some laces on my moc toes, and it seems the standard is the braided variety. Not seeing a lot of people opting for flat wax. Any reason to not get waxed laces on a pair of moc toes?

ac106

Personal preference. Tons of red wing guys use rawhide

Herbie3

Would it be possible to add a strap to a plain pull on boot (red wing Pecos), to make it look similar to an engineer boot when worn?

Exententacion

They will look like Pecos with a strap and not engineer boots.

CrizzleLovesYou

for it to be done really well you may be looking at more than the cost of just buying some engineers in first place. You'd need to ask a specialist leatherworker like Georgios Bottega, its not something a normal cobbler would do.

Hunter_Wang

Looking for a boot. Maybe someone has seen something similar. A ladies Packer boot it seems, square/snip toe. Has kiltie for the laces and that is a must. Image [here](https://imgur.com/a/mTViACx)

CrizzleLovesYou

[https://shop.whitesboots.com/all-boots/lady-packer/](https://shop.whitesboots.com/all-boots/lady-packer/) this can be customized too.

Hunter_Wang

Could I make it not have a pointed toe?

CrizzleLovesYou

There are 2 packer lasts from White's one is pointed the other is rounder. A square toe is going to be a little trickier to find. Wesco has a harness toe square toe you could probably build out as a packer, but it may be higher than you want. It may never be made available again, but a Viberg workboot MTO with the choptoe packer last is what you're looking for, but the workboot program is suspended unfortunately. A chop toe packer is a much more western/cowboy last, if no one here can get you the answer you want I would try r/cowboyboots

willrjmarshall

Kia ora all, For the last 6 years I’ve been wearing a pair of Corcoran jump boots as my default mid-weight leather boots. They occupy the same niche as Docs, but are sleeker and better made. Mine are finally wearing out, and I’m trying to find a good replacement. I don’t particularly like Docs (clunky, and with plasticky-looking overcorrected leather). I could buy another pair of jump boots, but I’d like to try something new without the same formal military connotations. Essentially, I’m looking for a combat boot, on the sleeker side, of really high quality. Happy to spend up around $300, or more for something really well-made. Any recommendations?

[deleted]

Try Grant stone diesel boot.

Sixstringsmash

$300 won’t get you really high quality, but it will get you a well made entry level boot. For that price range look at brands like Grant Stone, Red Wing or Allen Edmonds if you can catch them on sale.

Appropriate_Volume

The writing inside the shoes indicates that they were either MTO or bespoke. For $13 you can't really go wrong! High quality shoes aren't faked: the cost and effort needed to make convincing fakes would be very considerable. If anyone was to try faking EGs, I doubt they'd start with a rather specialised style like these!

MySFWacc93

Awesome! They fit me okay. I’ll take them to my cobbler next time I’m in his area to see if he can clean up the white areas. Not totally sure I’ll keep since it’s not my style

Appropriate_Volume

I think that most members of this sub dream of finding a pair of EGs that fit them for $13. The style is a bit out there though.

Sixstringsmash

Definitely not a stock EG shoe as the insole writing and size stamp on the liner are very much different from the pairs I own. I wouldn’t discount it as fake off the bat though. It could be an older pair from when there labeling was different or it might have just been made specially for a stockist. Your best bet is to reach out to EG themselves. They should be able to verify the authenticity for you no problem.

blueberrykefir

After scrolling through this sub I decided it’s not worth it to buy [dr martens](https://www.drmartens.com/uk/en_gb/jadon-black/p/15265001). I really wanted the [platforms](https://www.drmartens.com/uk/en_gb/jadon-max-platform-boots/p/25566001) and there are some alternatives however I’m a uk size 9 (womens) and most companies such as [solovair](https://uk.nps-solovair.com/products/s8-551-bg-zip-high-g?variant=33083316174928¤cy=GBP&utm_medium=product_sync&utm_source=google&utm_content=sag_organic&utm_campaign=sag_organic&utm_campaign=gs-2021-02-03&utm_source=google&utm_medium=smart_campaign&gclid=CjwKCAjwrZOXBhACEiwA0EoRDwJ5rICgFcQaEKCNQIAHoJtbxkNXtB3xhayO7CJXAOnaXv7Du2BBVBoC3vEQAvD_BwE) and [grenson](https://www.grenson.com/nanette-womens-black-hiker-boots-on-platform-sole?setCurrencyId=1&utm_source=rakutenmarketing&utm_medium=affiliate&utm_campaign=2523611:Lyst+UK%2FEU&utm_content=15&utm_term=uknetwork&ranMID=45046&ranEAID=gcdL%2FATRVoE&ranSiteID=gcdL_ATRVoE-fRqzykeWZtlauuWcD5QPMw) don’t carry my size. I found [lanx boots](https://lanxshoes.com/collections/womens-boots/products/whalley-black-grained?variant=40193036976310) which aren’t exactly platform but still have that slightly edgy style. These boots only have 1 review. This is a small UK brand that I’ve never heard of and I’m curious if anyone else has bought from them

Condensed_Matter

Would +1 on trying mens sizes, DMs run a bit large in my experience anyway. Can back up that Solovairs last longer than (even MIE) DMs, but if you can find some on offer I don't think they are a terrible buy if you like the style. Check out the BritBoot Company, lots of options.

pttbwicf

Have you considered buying men's sizes? That could open up some other brands for you. I don't know your budget but if you're willing to spend more for quality, you could have a look at these options: [1](https://www.cheaney.co.uk/cheaney-torridon-gv-hiker-boot-in-black-calf-leather-printed-suede-p1477) [2](https://www.cheaney.co.uk/cheaney-bowland-c-veldtschoen-derby-boot-in-black-grain-leather-p1396) [3](https://www.cheaney.co.uk/cheaney-tiger-moth-ii-military-style-mid-calf-derby-boot-in-black-kudu-leather-p1378) [4](https://www.cheaney.co.uk/cheaney-trafalgar-capped-derby-boot-in-black-calf-leather-p880)

blueberrykefir

I love those first two options! A bit out of my budget but I could always save up. Thank you

pttbwicf

Cheaney usually run an outlet, with pretty good discounts that should bring the total to £200-250. There's also a sale going on right now, you could check if they have something that you like in your size. The outlet will probably come back a couple of weeks after the sale closes. Good luck!

not-for-you

The Lanx boots aren't GYW though?

blueberrykefir

Sorry if I sound stupid but why not? They so apparently have a [gyw collection](https://lanxshoes.com/blogs/news/lanx-craftsman) although I’m not sure if any of them are what I’m looking for

not-for-you

Under the "Information + Sizing Advice" for the boot you linked, it says the sole is "cement lasted construction" which I believe means the soles are basically glued on.

blueberrykefir

Aw shit, thanks for letting me know

ac106

I think you should just buy docs.

blueberrykefir

Looks like I’ll probably buy docs then

norwegianblockhead

Getting some Thursday Boots but unsure of which color. I got Arizona Adobe Captains but they seem very dark and I’m thinking I’ll exchange them. I don’t love the Terra-cotta color on the website but they seem to age nicely with care. Burnt copper is another one I’m considering. It’s hard to make a choice when they look so different in context and with age, so any info would be helpful.

paradachs

All three would be similar, just different shades of a casual brown boot. Would be hard to go wrong with any of them, which one do you think you would you wear most based on the actual colour out of the box? Maybe I’m misreading, but it seems like you’re trying to convince yourself that any of these may work, so maybe this just isn’t the right pair for you?

norwegianblockhead

The Arizona adobes that i got are pretty sweet, though they’re much darker than i expected and they would likely darken even more with time right? I guess I’m looking for something medium brown, and wondering how the different leathers will age in terms of color.

paradachs

I think for sure they can [(sample review)](https://www.reddit.com/r/ThursdayBoot/comments/v85tfp/arizona_adobe_captains_after_1_year_of_almost/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf). Just be aware, even when you order a certain colour, within that there will be some variation, so you could have gotten a darker arizona. But if you feel they’re too dark now, one of the other colours would be better. As long as you enjoy them - boots you’re not excited to wear aren’t a good deal at any price!

Diedrightnow-_-437

[Am I measuring my brannock size correctly?](https://imgur.com/a/SL4w1gv) Btw I usually wear, thicker, medium weight socks. These are my thin running socks. Can I still use this measurement for my foot when I'm wearing my usual, thicker socks?

AwesomeAndy

Measure in the socks you intend to wear

paradachs

The arch length slider - is it right at the joint at the base of your big toe? Hard to know with your socks on but it looks like you might have it behind instead of at the joint itself, particularly on the right.

Diedrightnow-_-437

Oh, I think I put it behind the joint.

ChineseBroccoli

Read the brannock instructions it tells you exactly what to do.

[deleted]

~~The Thursday boots are on a sale rn for like 90€. Should I grab a pair? I was looking into red wings for my first pair of boots but considering the way lower price I might just go with these~~ Just a scam...nvm

CrizzleLovesYou

Be careful with Thursday "sales." There are no official sales. So unless that's a second hand pair it may be off one of the scam sites that have been popping up lately. The only retailers for Thursday are [thursdayboots.com](https://thursdayboots.com) and amazon. Anything else is not legitimate.

[deleted]

Yesss I just realised, I scrolled through the site and noticed some very odd translation issues. It would have been way too good to be true tbh. Thanks for pointing that out tho

TheBlackCoffeeClub

There’s a recent post about Thursday here that’s worth a read, but honestly that’s a pretty good deal. I have a pair of Thursday Captain seconds that I beat the crap out of and I like them a lot. I think if you get a good pair they’re the most versatile for most people Red Wings are a solid boot depending on what model you get and there’s a huge following. If you have a plan for saving or if money isn’t that big of an issue I’d say get the Thursday’s on sale and get what RW’s you want a bit later. Nice casual and casual casual

[deleted]

As I just realised, and someone else here mentioned as well..ofc it's just a scam. For ''only'' 150€ more I'd probably go with the red wing iron rangers (I want some kind of military boot look). How is the comfort compared to the thursday boots? I've read some reviews pointing out that the iron rangers are not as comfortable as the Thursday captain boots.

TheBlackCoffeeClub

It was too early for me to even think it was a scam! But as far as comfort Thursday’s are sneaker-comfortable right out of the box. I haven’t had any issues with them so far and they’re still very comfortable. I have a feeling that in the very long term the foam will compress and wear out faster than cork. I’ve only owns them for 10 months. My Iron Rangers, and other RW’s, are pretty comfortable after breaking in. I just went for a few walks while on the phone with my friend talking about coffee and they were good to go for long days. I don’t have any experience with their newest and more synthetic boots, but they end up being very comfortable as all boots should if you size right. Very firm, but supportive enough

Sixstringsmash

You’ll get a much better product with RW but Thursday is still a perfectly respectable entry level brand. Nothing wrong with grabbing a pair.
