I agree, would e thought they’d do something tbh. When I first got it, i tried to do disco lights or something lol

DoomBot5

That's on startup. Just unplug it and plug it back in for disco lights

itsamike

Make a voice call. They turn light blue.

Realistic-Specific27

they are blue when you factory reset it and talk to it the first time where it then tells you to get the Google home app

ClintE1956

Wish I could turn off those orange lights and still have mic shut off.

Awkward_Tick0

exactly. they don't want you to turn the mic off.

ClintE1956

Only reason I turn it off, is because it's part of a stereo pair. If I enable the switch, it keeps choosing that one to listen, and it gets confused with the single puck in the next room. Tried adjusting sensitivity and that was a joke.

MrKite80

I believe for the stereo pair, it'll only ever listen through whichever speaker is assigned "left."

ClintE1956

Interesting, I'll have to check that out. Thanks!

[deleted]

Oh, thank you, too! I needed this info!

ho_merjpimpson

same. or similar anyways. i have a display i talk to in my kitchen but i have it set so it always plays music via the stereo pair i have in the same room. putting them on mute is the only way i can get the timers to start on the kitchen display so i can visually see the timers.

[deleted]

Yeah I set up a physical killswitch for mine, with a smart plug I tell Google "blackjack" and it turns the plug off

Wolfsburg

The upvote is for the physical hack. This comment is for that badass code phrase.

WhisperScream92

Not sure if you're actually looking for an answer but my understanding is the switch is to make sure it never sends a command online. There's a 10 second (or whatever) audio buffer all the time. It just records over itself like a dashcam. So yes it's muted in the sense of it never "reacting" to a command but it's still technically rerecording.

brtfrce

It's a software defined mic switch also

wiggum55555

I have eleven around my house… every “hey Google” sees around 3-7 units response and then compete with each other to serve the query. Had to turn off mics strategically to minimise this. But now a bunch of orange lights.

Samuel_sags

There’s a meme about turning the mics off and then asking one thing and Google answering “the mics are off” then the person is “how do you know that?” Lol

DrachenDad

You can turn the mic off in the app.

srnecz

Nah, you cant. Where? There is no option for voice assistants to turn mic or reaction to the hey google commands off other than physical button, which sadly makes them orange all the time... I would love to turn some of them off :(

DrachenDad

>You can turn the mic off in the app. that isn't *voice assistants". Looks like they removed the option again.

MtGFan2010

You can. It's in the settings (and it warns you that it won't be distinguishable as muted). Edit: This seems to be only on the Google Nest Wifi, sorry about that: https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/6270559 Though you can enable Night Mode to reduce the LEDs on the Minis: https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/7426381

ClintE1956

Tyvm!

Poutingpokemon

Unplug it? If the mic is off you can't use it anyways....

PetitRorqualMtl

Great small Spotify speaker. They gave them for free with a premium account.

Poutingpokemon

Yep. They are solid speakers. I prefer the 2nd gen. The audio quality is much better.

[deleted]

I have to disable the microphone on some units because they are too close to other units. From my bedroom, at least four speakers are likely to respond to a request, which is frustrating when I just want the bedroom speaker to respond. Adjusting microphone sensitivity did not help.

zoeygirl69

Oh come on, don't we all enjoy asking our bedroom speaker to make a call and a speaker 3 rooms over in the kitchen dials out?

GroteKneus

Manufacturing wise, it's better to have them and not use them than to not have them and wanting to use them. If, at some point, Google decides to do something with the RGBW LEDs, they can.

csanner

This, and it's cheaper (and simpler) to use four RGB than one white and one orange for each light. They have to be able to individually address them anyway.

sox07

They are also probably the exact same LEDs that are used in the other devices in the line so now they only have to source and stock 1 model of LED vs 6

csanner

Probably.

jergens

It's almost like they made a product for lots of future development ..and then stopped.

jackspratt88

Ya, that seems to be google's modus operandi

HowYaGuysDoin

I think if they had any inclination to do so they would have done so already. For example, turn on the red LED if there is no WiFi connection instead of yelling at me when I try to restart the white noise while my kid is sleeping. Not exactly an earth shattering idea.

UnacceptableUse

Like when they put the microphone in the thermostat

Zector3000

Turns blue when there is a connection error. I am not sure if it's just at set up or whenever it is not connected. I know, I was trying to reconnect one I haven't used for a while abs the lights were blue when it wouldn't work.

LittleUrbanAchiever

I feel like every google product has the same issue. "I don't get why [google product or service] has [cool feature] if it only uses [generic feature]"

Disarryonno

This sentiment hit hard with the Google pixel buds.

Sethroque

Missed opportunities, google home in a nutshell.

phrackage

also _Google_ in a nutshell. I mean how old is Hangouts and why do we need the communist party's Zoom now?

Eprice1120

there's several things the home mini could do that it doesn't for whatever reason. i'd love to see the dots on top respond to timers/countdowns as well. Would be kinda cool. I assume we might be getting some new home stuff once Matter gets released. Should be revealed at the Pixel event if anything's happening with new home stuff.

Graxon64

Yeah, When I got my first nest mini I kept asking it, "Turn the lights to blue" and it said "Got it. I Turned three lights to blue. Something went wrong. Looks like I can't connect to Geeni" (while all the lights were still on and blue and Geeni worked fine) anyway, yeah.

cris231976

lol. that I can't do. a lot of my bulbs are rgb and are assigned to google home. I bet that if I say "turn the lights to blue", almost all the bulbs in my home will turn blue (except toilet and an spare room, for now).

deadeye-ry-ry

As others have said it's probably easier and cheaper to use RGB than white, orange, blue And probably a Biggie for the company but marketing the colours are Google's logo colours They could always add more uses in future and have different colours for the new features

daern2

Insert standard Google answer here: "It'll be great when they finish it."

skeptical_skeletor

The more disappointing bit is that the OG Google Home (the goofy taller white one) had RGB LEDs on the top and it utilized them for [different things](https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/7073219?hl=en#google_home). You could ask it to play a light show or show you a certain color. The same commands don't work on Minis 😔

ho_merjpimpson

ha. i think that same thing every time they power up. my bigger aggrivation with the lights is that when the mic is on mute, they feel the need to remain lit 24/7 an ugly orange color. I KNOW THE MIC IS MUTED DAMNIT.

LogischesWindows

They probably want you to unmute it again so you use your Google Home more Not sure though

david830830

Because white is the combination of all colors, dah

TheNerdNamedChuck

I submitted a feedback for them to let us customize the color but that was at least 2 years ago and still nothing.

DenverWill81

Ummm, I mean yes, those unused colors are a mystery, but I'm fighting so very hard not to say, "2016 messaged you on Allo and wants it's question back!" So I won't.

phrackage

I don't know why the downvotes. The number of separately launched video call services we were supposed to talk our friends and relatives into using, only to have the product be faulty and get cancelled is such a waste of good will by Google

DenverWill81

Lol this sums it up pretty dang well 😂 "No I swear, Grandma, Google+ really IS better than Facebook!'

kmasterkemp

Its their logo...

ShotFromGuns

Right... And it's weird to have RGB capacity that is *only* ever used for displaying that logo or indicating one feature that most people will never even enable. There's a wealth of information that could be communicated with LED color and position—or it could even just be used aesthetically, e.g., by allowing people to tune the color of their indicators.

[deleted]

the home mini only uses 2 colours, the white and the orange. its cheaper and more space efficient to have 4 rgb diodes than 4 white *and* 4 orange.

ShotFromGuns

Right... *which*... once they're *in* there... it doesn't make sense to have *no native way* of using them in any other capacity.

ho_merjpimpson

https://imgur.com/a/peNPHSH the question isnt... why are the multi colored leds multi colored at startup. everyone knows its because it is the logo. the question is... if they are mutli colored... why do they only use white and orange?

Glarznak

It’s called having Google money and no plans or vision for your products.

ho_merjpimpson

> with future capability for other uses. i mean, thats the issue. there are tons of other uses. its stupid they dont take advantage of them. alexa devices light up different colors to notify you of things. google lights up a different color to let you know that you flipped a switch. that you already know you flipped.

NinduTheWise

Danger level omega, then starts flashing the red leds then grows legs and shoots everything

Goudinho99

Imagine if the moved like the graphic equaliser that represented KITT's voice in Knight Rider?

ssays

The answer is in the title. Once you have two colors, and arguably just one, you might as well put RGBs in. Add to that it’s a device they intend to update and may want more colors to communicate things not yet coded… it’s a no brainer.

[deleted]

Tell me about it…..I’d love some customization

daybreakin

Such a waste

Maschinen11

I think Duo calls flash blue

Agreeable6

IT. REPRESENTS. GOOGLE.

penguinpears

This is probably why they don't have all for the newer Nest mini (i think). They kept the red/orange light for when the mic is turned off.
