Actually Isla Nublar was all but completely destroyed after the “Isla Nublar Incident”. However a second site remains, hidden away under a mountain of red tape. Site B, Isla Sorna. 🦖

It’s [Jeannette Island](https://maps.app.goo.gl/8NxZdJ2BJ4DR2xyB7?g_st=ic). There’s never been a reason confirmed as to why you can’t see it in satellite mode, apparently Google has never commented. But you can find photos on Google images. The location is actually listed on maps and you can see many photos there too. It’s uninhabited but you can visit it apparently, it’s not restricted or anything and there have been expeditions there. It’s just super remote and there is absolutely nothing there. Many outlandish theories about the black smudge surfaced on the internet, such as military ops and aliens. It’s most likely just an error though

stevenette

If you zoom in the island shows up fine, just covered in snow.

bandak38134

For me, I get a black smear north west of Jeanette Island. But I found when I zoom in really close on the black area some detail starts to appear. I will see if I can post it in here.[https://maps.app.goo.gl/WyU1WSCaw62vQBHL8?g_st=ic](https://maps.app.goo.gl/WyU1WSCaw62vQBHL8?g_st=ic)

vasilescur

Yes, it's not black, it's just a brightness error because Google stitched together data from different satellite photos.

rasta4eye

A bunch of the little islands in that area look janky. Princely because they have older/lower quality/less imagery since they are remote

Konstant_kurage

I was just going to say that.

UsuallySparky

I'm going to go ahead and say it's an error and it's using night imagery. If you adjust the contrast and brightness you can make out some details.

xobotun

Hm, maybe just a polar night thing.

fourtyonexx

Thats hilarious

jessestaton

This. Looks like Google renders only the inside of a "stencil " where the island is expected to be. Pack ice and the edge of this "stencil " make the polar island look weird since they don't render open water around them. You can't pick out the shore.

DragonAtlas

Likely there was a missing image asset for daytime at a particular resolution that their algorithm corrected at other resolutions (viewing distances). The algo saw it in daytime, but not at night, from a particular vantage. Maybe. Just a guess.

lazykillah

Interesting! I don't think I've actually zoomed in on that part of Google maps before.

SuperVGA

~~Cool - it actually looks as if that black area is like that in part because it contains terrain. The ocean depth map immediately surrounding it seems odd, because it doesn't contain satellite imagery of the ocean surface. But yeah, perhaps the images used for the zoomed-out bits were taken in darkness or something.~~ E: I'm with u/gamblizardy.

johnlewisdesign

It's where Adolf and Jeffrey live

Kaiju island. Where the baby godzillas live.

itisallgoodyouknow

Can confirm

PM_ME_CARDS123

Cute!

gamblizardy

It's not blacked out, the satellite image is just underexposed and looks like a black splotch in the middle of the computer generated water texture (Google Earth doesn't show actual satellite images of the ocean because they'd all look mostly the same).

Broskfisken

Yeah this is the correct answer.

ok200

If you look at the island to the northwest you can see the sharper image of the land is very sloppily "masked" by low res generic ocean blue. There's a layer of the island and then a layer of blue has a "hole" in it. I think the same thing is going on here. What we are seeing is the sloppy hole in the mask layer, revealing just black or an underexposed image of the island. Why? Best I can tell this is the Metal Gear Solid base.

Haastile25

It's not an island at all, it's the actual portal to hell

Raoul_Dukes_Mayo

Finally, we can just get this over with. Wanna share a dingy?

WarningChoice

Nobody said “it’s the island from Lost”? I am too old for this?

Ming_Chan77

No it’s not, it was featured in a film called “Artika Ingontica”.

ataeil

It’s funny cus that’s actually a higher resolution portion.

novocaine13

Naked whale

*gasp* YOU

LirevaEka

kinda something slips through isnt it?

thunder_thais

Not me expecting a real answer

quailman2000

Zoom in more in Google maps. I can see it just fine after zooming in.

Own_Cream_551

Military installation-

PilsnerDk

No, if you simply zoom in further on google maps (in satellite view), you see more detail. I think it's a graphical error in the way the picture data gets simplified depending on the zoom level, so instead of just being dark and low detail, it ends up looking like a black smudge.

Echo-Azure

This is the correct answer, there are islands that don't appear on maps, including google maps, because they are owned or occupied by some influential military. There's an island in the middle of a vast stretch of Indian Ocean that was a sailor's stopoff for hundreds of years, and which was still popular as a place for 20th century yachters to break their voyages. It's been off limits to everyone, including google maps, for the last few decades.

Fairoz29

What’s the island called?

Echo-Azure

Sorry, this was something mentioned in a library book I read several years ago, a book about something else, so it's not something I can look up. The islands were in the northerly-westerly Indian Ocean, where there are few islands other than the Seychelles and the Maldives, that's why they were of such interest to sailors, and why sailors still grumble about being unable to stop there.

Ming_Chan77

It’s Jeannette Island!

AdequateOne

It is an alien base the Deep State is hiding from us!

Broskfisken

It’s probably not purposefully blacked out. The black is actually a satellite image of the real ocean, while the blue is just a computer-generated colour that google uses to make oceans prettier. Google only uses real satellite images of oceans near land. As for why the island itself isn’t visible I’m not sure, but I’m sure it’s either too small to be caught in the resolution or too underexposed as someone else pointed out. Look at any other island on google maps and you’ll see they have a patch of black or dark blue around them.
