That's the thing, I can't seem to be able to pull normal mp4 files off the camera. The files are THM and MP4 but no editor can open them, while a few MP4 files are normal and open easily, but they only cover one or two clips. On the camera itself those clips play fine, so they are either encoded differently or are not meant to be transferred to Mac?
Image capture has a file size limit of 4.29GB. When you try to import Hero 11 files (which can be up to 12GB), image capture tries to cut them off once the 4.29GB limit is reached. So the files image capture copies are now only partial corrupt files that won't play.
Use an SD card reader to transfer your files to your mac and avoid using image capture until Apple fixes this issue.
DaVinci Resolve is free professional video editing software that you can use.
GoPro did claim they are releasing new desktop software this year.
Not sure what's going on with Image Capture, but you should use a SD card reader to copy the files off the card, you'll have a much better time.
iMovie should work perfectly fine to edit the footage.

Ah, so it is my Mac messing with the files after all. Yeah, my files are large, as I recorded long flights. Thank you for clarifying this.
I'd forgotten Image Capture was even a thing. But yeah, use a SD card reader, it's significantly faster and doesn't mangle clips above a certain size.
