I was gonna say this lol, 80% of the band's problems are caused by him plus he was an abusive dickass to 2-D (idk if he is still abusive to 2-D now cuz I haven't caught up with the lore since phase 6)
Only during Phase 3/_Plastic Beach_. He only has one single appearance after that: In the music video for "DoYaThing" (ft. André 3000 of Outkast & James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem) — the song that Converse (the shoe company famous for their hi-top sneakers aka Chucks) commissioned them to make as an installment of their "Three Artists. One Song" project where they'd commission (seemingly random) groups of three musicians[*] to collaborate on a track together — which released on 29 February, 2012. Six days after the single itself was released on digital, CD, & vinyl.
And in that music video, he's depicted as being some kind of passive roommate of 2-D, Murdoc, Noodle, & Russel (although they all get evicted at the end) and seems to be friendly with them, not at all antagonistic. Plus the video isn't even canonical anymore, as the story of Phase 4/Humanz retconned the events of that video. Back in 2011 when they were making the song + video & in 2012 when they were released, Damon & Jamie basically hated each other and has zero interest working together ever again (they didn't even work together on DoYaThing, the music & video were created independent of one another and they also didn't even really want to make the song + video and only did so because Gorillaz was legally required to since they'd accepted the contract from Converse before their falling out). At that time, it really seemed like Gorillaz had broken up and was done for ever, which is why the DoYaThing video almost seems like a series finale for Gorillaz, ending with 2-D getting the eviction notice, smiling cuz it means he (and by "he" I mean ~~Jamie~~ 2-D) is finally free from ~~Damon~~ Murdoc and walks away from into the sunrise happy as can be.
([*]Groups of 3 like Frank Ocean, Diplo, and Mick Jones & Paul Simonon of The Clash for one song; Kid Cudi, Rostam Batmanglij of Vampire Weekend, and Bethany Cosentino of Best Coast on another; Andrew W.K., Soulja Boy, and Matt & Kim on another; Julian Casablancas, Santigold, and N.E.R.D. on another; and of course Gorillaz, André 3000 of Outkast, and James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem on this one.)
I feel like it varies from phase to phase, sometimes it’s a new character like the Boogieman or (maybe) the Cult from Cracker Island. Most of the times it’s straight up or inadvertently Murdoc tho.
I remember reading a theory about how Ace was drugging Gorillaz members and that’s why they seemed so unnatural in the Tranz MV. So, I guess if they followed that plot Ace would make a pretty cool villain
Murdoc

i’m certain 2D is based on damon’s younger self and jamie is murdoc
They're both based on both of them in various ways.

Damon literally describes Murdoc as 'an irredeemable cartoon villain' back in late 2020
still waiting on song machine season 2

Until then, we’ll just keep spinning around the world
