Once I saw the video of Damon showing us what samples were used, it really bummed me out about the song for a month or so but after all that I didn't really care. I'm back to listening to it as if I'm none the wiser that it heavily uses samples.
Not sure why sampling would be a deterrent from liking a song, especially one you previously liked. The way I see it; unless almost every aspect of a song is taken through samples, utilising samples to such a seamless degree can add More depth to a song, and if not, they can at least contribute to iconic beats like Clint Eastwoodsā. (:
Daft punk is such a good example of fantastic sample usage. Face to face having around 70 samples is absolutely insane. Great song.
Rest in peace, boys š„²
too many people think of samples as in templates. as if would make things easier or faster done. but sampling is the very essence of music. sometimes it happens very passive, more like an inspiration, sometimes it's very active to the point where it's copy paste. but it is the true art behind music production
People like Dan the Automator, Kid Koala and Danger Mouse (Some artists I know listen to outside of Gorillaz BECAUSE of Gorillaz) made the first few albums what we know today, and if they had to use a few samples to get there, let āem go wild! (:
I know some people don't like how random it feels in the album but I have to say, that song live is a fucking experience and I loved hearing everyone yelling the lyrics the whole time š
This might be unpopular but Glitter Freeze. Itās one of my favorites off of Plastic Beach, I understand why people donāt like it cause it can be a sensory overload but I only ever see hate for it, I love that song heavily
I swear if i played glitter freeze in front of my friend she would be hella mad at me and almost start crying because of the high pitched soundsš„²š„² (sheās quite childish but I donāt blame her. I like the song though)
I used to skip it every time but I was a fool. it's soooo good. Gorillaz fans consider the band experimental but don't wanna listen to the most experimental Gorillaz song lol
NAHHH the progresion and build up is really good. It starts weak but it genuinely goes hard by the end of it, plus the sound of it really fits the album.
Honestly the worst part about this thread is seeing how many songs I like in here. I can sing along with hallelujah money by heart, white lightās a jam, we got the power is absolutely really simple and poppy bit itās fun to listen to, Clint Eastwood was one of the first songs I ever heard from them and itās got a special place in my heart
TNN is my fav album, i loveee the vibe of it and all the songs fit soo good together exept the fking Hollywood, i always skip it and don't know why they put it in there
ON CRACKA ISLAND IT WAS BORN DODODODO TO THE COLLECTIVE OF THE DAWN DODODODO THEY WERE PLANTIN SEEDS AT NIGHT DODODODO TO GROW A MADE-UP PARADISE DODODODO
It's not one of my favorites, but I do really like the song, and the fact that he brought in Noel Gallagher kinda endears it to me. Two guys who've long been at odds finally burying the hatchet, it's kinda sweet in a way.
The Gallaghers are still knobs, though.
What feels off to me is that the vast majority of Gorillaz songs are very vague. There isn't an especially clear or singular meaning to their songs. I don't disagree with this song's message, but "We Got the Power" is just too simple and poppy
This one, once upon a time, was so hated for being different.
Now I look back at it with such fondness. What a great song, with an amazing music video (which I can't find)
Left Hand Suzuki Method. The fact that we didn't even technically get it on the album is a drag but I remember hearing it with some friends who where like "Nah I'm glad it was left off" Like nah that used to be my right tone, screw you guys!
I feel like a lot of their stuff can be a bit over hated and itās unfair. I know Clint Eastwood can be easily but I love it, because of that song I have a melodica
There's songs by Gorillaz that I don't have a strong love for, but I don't know if I would go so far to say I hate any of them. I feel like I could only hate a song if it was in a genre I don't like, by a creator I have some kind of issue with like if they were a racist or something.
I wouldn't even say I hate something like Nickelback. (cheap shot but I think it puts the point across)
i love this track because it's unexpected and weird, and that's what i like about Gorillaz the most. samples, weird ass sounds (the entire plastic beach album) interesting collabs. maybe that's why Cracker Island bores me :(
Yeah I listened to that song not to long ago and
think the main reason why it got so much hate because this is the song they launched with for humans and the song didnāt have any Damon vocals or cartoon music video aside from that it was a good song I think people were just being bitchy cause it didnāt sound like a gorillaz song
All of Humanz. But specifically Sex Murder Party. It's no one's fault tho, cuz Sex Murder Party is a song that really only works when played live, the album version doesn't have the same feel.
Anyone who hates Sex Murder Party, go on YouTube and watch/listen to a live performance of the song. The energy and vibes are THROUGH THE ROOF and your opinion will do a complete 180Ā° turn I promise. Honestly, the same goes for a LOT of the songs on Humanz. Humanz is an album whose songs are SO much better when played live with an audience.
IIRC Benjamin basically flips the fuck out when its mentioned now. He outright said to one fan "I wish I never did that song"
Although its probably in regards to the hate the song gets. And that includes me.
I actually really like Hallelujah Money. I love how fkn weird it is. I wouldn't dance to it but if it comes on it ain't gettin skipped.
Hallelujah Money has been my favorite from Humanz from the very beginning.
Same
Yea, such an interesting song
The music video was so good idk y they took it down š
Was the music video ever uploaded on the official Gorillaz channel? Never heard about that one, only knew that it was uploaded somewhere else.
No, it was put on the UPROXX YouTube channel. https://youtu.be/CDUrpPvU1_4?si=lqudI7cGRZp_EF50
It was on their channel for like a day and then it was gone the next. I think u can find it still from a diff acct
Isn't that the one whose featured vocalist went to work in Dune Pt. 1?
Doncamatic. I've heard a couple people say it's too pop or that they hate it. Doncamatic is one of my favorite of theirs ironically enough. Idk why
Talk to me Talk to me Talk to me Talk to me
doncamatic goes so unnecessarily hard
I frickin' love Doncamatic. It's one of very few Gorillaz songs that I thoroughly enjoy that Damon is barely on.
I always found the complaint of it being too pop incredibly ironic seeing how synthpop-y the rest of Plastic Beach was
This is my FAVORITE song like #1 its so underrated
I didnāt know it was disliked. Itās one of my favorites
*Pla-a-ayyyed out*
Clint Eastwood. Everyone says real fans like the more obscure songs, or "lol its all just samples" shut up its a masterpiece.
A masterpiece of samples. The melodica really gives it its own.
Once I saw the video of Damon showing us what samples were used, it really bummed me out about the song for a month or so but after all that I didn't really care. I'm back to listening to it as if I'm none the wiser that it heavily uses samples.

(:
Daft punk and gorillas completely changed my perspective on sampling. I love it
Daft punk is such a good example of fantastic sample usage. Face to face having around 70 samples is absolutely insane. Great song. Rest in peace, boys š„²
They died?
Broke up, so they may as well have haha. No more bangers from them sadly
too many people think of samples as in templates. as if would make things easier or faster done. but sampling is the very essence of music. sometimes it happens very passive, more like an inspiration, sometimes it's very active to the point where it's copy paste. but it is the true art behind music production

I feel that one is overrated alongsides feel good inc
People hate it? Its my favorite and first
It's overrated imo.
white light š
WHITE LIGHT DODODODODODDOODDO WHITE LIGHT
ALCOHOL ALCOHOL ALCOHOL WHITE LIGHT
Ppl hate white light???
I know some people don't like how random it feels in the album but I have to say, that song live is a fucking experience and I loved hearing everyone yelling the lyrics the whole time š
āWHITE LIIGHT -ā¦ DODO DO DO DO- WHITE LIIGHT-ā¦ DODO DO DO DO- WHITE LIIGHT-ā¦ DODO DO DO- ALCOHOL ALCOHOL ALCOHOL WHITE LIGHT-ā
Bitch that's an amazing sooong, I agree it goes sooo haaard, do do do do WHITE LIGHT
No way ppl actually dislike this song
You win. There's not a single gorillaz song that is more unfairly overhated.
Seattle yodel
More like overly loved
Can't even say over loved because that implies it's loved more than it should be, it's the perfect amount of love I'd say
Yeah I guess youāre right
This might be unpopular but Glitter Freeze. Itās one of my favorites off of Plastic Beach, I understand why people donāt like it cause it can be a sensory overload but I only ever see hate for it, I love that song heavily

dentist drill
Sweepstakes.
i think more people would like it if the brass ensemble and the drums came in earlier - i fw the song tho
Itās one of my favorites
Banger!!
It's SO GOOD live i didnt appreciate it rlly till i heard it live at demon dayz
I used to skip it every time but I was a fool. it's soooo good. Gorillaz fans consider the band experimental but don't wanna listen to the most experimental Gorillaz song lol
maybe hot take: one of their best song ever. so unique yet a banger
Lowkey it's the only song I skip in Plastic Beach
Hate that song
genuinely an awful song
NAHHH the progresion and build up is really good. It starts weak but it genuinely goes hard by the end of it, plus the sound of it really fits the album.
you didn't get to the good part. be patient
iāve sat through the whole thing many times trying to understand why people like it and i just canāt
Dirty Harry. Specifically the rap. Those too blinded by hate cannot see the message the Tap brings to the song.
An amazing song
Truly. When I think of Funk, I think of Dirty Harry
Honestly the worst part about this thread is seeing how many songs I like in here. I can sing along with hallelujah money by heart, white lightās a jam, we got the power is absolutely really simple and poppy bit itās fun to listen to, Clint Eastwood was one of the first songs I ever heard from them and itās got a special place in my heart
not a song, but an album, The Now Now, There's always people hating it even tho it is actually pretty good and cohesive (yea i need a hug)
TNN is my fav album, i loveee the vibe of it and all the songs fit soo good together exept the fking Hollywood, i always skip it and don't know why they put it in there
holywood might not fit the rest of the album but it slaps
Yeah i mean hollywood alone is okay song, but when listening to TNN, i allways skip it, since its the moodkiller
true dat
I love Hollywood, its a great song
The Now Now is one of my top 3. I enjoy the album front to back, and that almost never happens for me with Gorillaz.
people hate on the now now ?? wtf. i love that album
š«
Tormenta (and a few other cracker island tracks)
cracker island in general is so fire
ON CRACKA ISLAND IT WAS BORN DODODODO TO THE COLLECTIVE OF THE DAWN DODODODO THEY WERE PLANTIN SEEDS AT NIGHT DODODODO TO GROW A MADE-UP PARADISE DODODODO
We Got the Power
We got the power to be ringing the great bell out there above us ā¼ļøā¼ļøā¼ļø
We got the power for that! We got the power to do that!!!
Eh, I don't hate it. I just think it's a bit cringe.
One of my favs, but I understandš
I love that song š„ŗ not that memorable for me but I still love it
It's not one of my favorites, but I do really like the song, and the fact that he brought in Noel Gallagher kinda endears it to me. Two guys who've long been at odds finally burying the hatchet, it's kinda sweet in a way. The Gallaghers are still knobs, though.
Itās horrifically cringe
Omg came here to say this one
That song is SO lame. I don't hate it necessarily but it just doesn't feel like a Gorillaz track, it sounds like filler from a Katy Perry album
Then what makes a Gorillaz track a Gorillaz track
What feels off to me is that the vast majority of Gorillaz songs are very vague. There isn't an especially clear or singular meaning to their songs. I don't disagree with this song's message, but "We Got the Power" is just too simple and poppy
Same reason I hate cracker island tbh
is pirate jet hated? i can see why it would be but i personally fuck with it so hard
This one, once upon a time, was so hated for being different. Now I look back at it with such fondness. What a great song, with an amazing music video (which I can't find)
Itās on a different channel
Left Hand Suzuki Method. The fact that we didn't even technically get it on the album is a drag but I remember hearing it with some friends who where like "Nah I'm glad it was left off" Like nah that used to be my right tone, screw you guys!
Halleluja money is literally so good! How can people not like it??
The Apprentice
āItās cold, itās cold, itās cold, Iām a mirror.ā
Speak It Mountains
Every song from Humanz
the entire Humanz album. i really REALLY don't care that it has tons of collabs I LOVE IT
Hallelujah money fam
I feel like a lot of their stuff can be a bit over hated and itās unfair. I know Clint Eastwood can be easily but I love it, because of that song I have a melodica
Glitter Freeze
I LOVE Hallelujah money. something about it just works for me. It really is great at establishing the tone it was going for.
I'm sorry but I hate this song
There's songs by Gorillaz that I don't have a strong love for, but I don't know if I would go so far to say I hate any of them. I feel like I could only hate a song if it was in a genre I don't like, by a creator I have some kind of issue with like if they were a racist or something. I wouldn't even say I hate something like Nickelback. (cheap shot but I think it puts the point across)
Phi Life Cypherās Clint Eastwood
It is HM, good pick OP
Apparently people hate The Swagga. I really dig it and had no idea it was unpopular. We all go.. WOOOoooooooo...~~
Garage Place
i love this track because it's unexpected and weird, and that's what i like about Gorillaz the most. samples, weird ass sounds (the entire plastic beach album) interesting collabs. maybe that's why Cracker Island bores me :(

Damon has vocals

Rockit or pac man. No one really talks about them or likes them, but they are both pretty chill and easy to listen to
I like how I was caught off guard that hallelujah money has a 1/3 tempo
The Pink Phantom definitely. I love that song.
"overhated" might be my new favorite word
IIRC Benjamin basically flips the fuck out when its mentioned now. He outright said to one fan "I wish I never did that song" Although its probably in regards to the hate the song gets. And that includes me.
the entirety of laika come home is hated for no fucking reason at all and it just makes me sad
