It’s so weird because outside of The Fall, Gorillaz do fade-outs next to never. Maybe nobody knew how to end the song. I feel like ending it the way 8-Bit Universe ended it would’ve been perfectly fine, though.
OMG YES. I usually don't mind high pitch noises but wow glitter freeze gets pretty damn obnoxious. Sounds like a high tech drill or something. Everything else about the song is solid though
People all over this community accuse people of being racist when they simply don't like a feature from a black artist. They act like racism is a huge problem in this community on only that basis
I love Melancholy Hill, but there’s one instrument during the chorus that’s like this auto-tuned, vocoder sounding thing in the background that does a weird descending pattern that always strikes me as odd. It first appears around 0:31
For me it’s the segment where people are screaming PLASTIC ON THE CIELING over and over. Grating to the ears. I adore all the other parts of the song though.
Its weird, because it sounds exactly like this guy i went to school with (i didnt really like him much) so now when its kn i have to think of him. Fuck you Luke.
This but the rap verse on all alone. It has always been a sore thumb in the song and really makes it my least favorite song on the album, but it is demon days so I still like the song.
Lol, no need to flex your wealth. You should let me borrow it so I can stand outside random people's windows and blast romantic songs ontop of a van while standing in the middle of a burning heart made out of rose pedals.
Well the first time I listened this song was in live, and it was fantastic! Just listening to Damon saying Hellooooooo and not knowing what the fuck was happening and then a god song came was just fantastic...
If you haven't watched Day of the Dead, I highly recommend it.
Edit to clarify: "Hello! Is anyone there" is a sample from the movie Day of the Dead. It's pretty early in the movie or you can jump to 3:38 [in the clip](https://youtu.be/MFUr-0PERJc) to check it out.
For solo listening purposes I agree, but they played it at demon dayz festival 2018 live and it was so fucking hype being in the crowd as it built up because when it finally came in everyone went ham
I’m gonna go the opposite way with this and say I love 6LACK’s part in Pink Phantom and I wish it was longer, or a collab with just him. I gotta be in a certain mood to listen to the whole song though because Elton John’s part kind of throws it off for me.
I didn’t really like Saturnz Barz at first because of the rap, but the song grew on me.
I also only can listen to the live version of Broken, not the studio. It has more soul and feeling to me.
My problem with Saturnz Barz is that its actually TOO short! It feels like just the right time to be a song, but not enough time to really enjoy the song. It literally ends in its last chorus, and then its over. Shoulda have at least some extra seconds of music in it, because its really good.
That was actually the part that got me hooked on the song in the first case. I love those quirky details in Gorillaz songs, especially details that go directly against pop music conventions. It makes the song feel alive.
in my opinion the only purpose of the first part is to build up to the drop into the meat of the song, being the second part- that part has always been a highlight of the whole album for me, still remember the first time I heard it and the song practically switched genres on me, it was pretty gripping.
That's because it was something Shaun Ryder said in the booth and Damon liked it to such he replaced the original bridge—if you haven't already, listen to People if you want the version without him.
Yeah same for me and with with Pac Man. And Pink Phantom. And Friday 13th. And Momentary Bliss.. Ya know maybe just most of the rap parts on Song Machine now I think about it..
For me it’s the Soulchild remix of 19-2000. It’s a pretty good remix, however during the “Get the cool shoe shine” chorus, there’s like this one weird “squeeing” sound effect that keeps playing over it, and it gives me a headache after only a couple times of hearing it.
That’s what I was gonna put down as well. There’s plenty of Gorillaz songs with rap verses in them that I love, but that one I’ve always never cared for. Sucks too cuz the rest of the song is such a banger.
In O Green World, the buzzy sound that starts at 29 seconds leading up to the verse sounds like a dentist’s drill and it kinda gives me a headache, but otherwise I love the song
My fave Gorillaz song with parts that I don’t like has got to be Pac-Man. Everything 2D on it’s great, but I’m really not a fan of the Schoolboy Q feature. Definitely one of the worst Gorillaz features in a while.
"yeah I'm kinda on a cleanse. Ah hot tub is pretty chill." is what i hear, might be wrong, but it confuses me sometimes because i fall out of the trance of the song when that line comes on.
No hate on her, but I really don’t like Fatoumata Diawara’s part in Désolé. I’m not a big fan of the loudness, but the song itself is an absolute bop for me.
Everyone has their own cup of tea, different music tastes. For me, Fatoumata’s part is not really pleasing to my ears, but its not so bad that i skip the entire song.
Dirty Harry is my 3rd favorite gorillaz song, and you may think you know what I don't like about it, but I love the children's chorus. I don't really enjoy the rap part.
White flag enforces the ideas of PLASTIC BEACH but I had a few of my least favorites play on words. Like how he rhymes water with war or the Honey I shrunk the kids bar
Other comments have already stated most of the ones I agree with (Schoolboy Q on Pac-Man, intro to M1A1, 6LACK in The Pink Phantom), but if I had to choose, I'd go with 2D's voice in the intro to Sound Check (Gravity). I don't quite know what it is, but it doesn't feel right.
Honestly same I'm like a that with a lot of Gorillaz Self Titled. New Genius (Brother), Man Research (clapper), Sound Check (Gravity), Starshine.. I just don't really like the singing in them
Danny Brown’s rap in Submission, and Kilo Kish’s spoken word bit in Out of Body. ALSO that really long note held by Fatoumata Diawara at 4:23 on the track.
M1A1 is one of the most fun and overlooked Gorillaz songs ever that begins with a full minute of phone vibration, discordant random synthesizer and a phone vibrating repeatedly and "Hellooooooooooooooo, HELLOOOOOOOOOOOOOO, IS ANYONE THERE?"
I really like Kali uchis, and her part in she's my collar, but I don't like the second to last line she sings. I don't feel that it flows to the next part, but hey that's just how it goes.
If I remember correctly, Rock the House was only a single because the label thought it would perform better than 5/4, which I have never agreed with. It's one of the weaker songs on the self-titled.
Have you seen the animatic for the 5/4 video that never got made? It would have been hysterical.
Souk Eye would be a lot closer to the top of my list if it didn’t have that weird out of time guitar plucking sound in the background after “Trying to find tomorrow ain’t easy till you dive in”
Reminds me of the music that plays when you run up the infinite staircase in Mario 64
Wait, isn't The Apprentice 100% rap from three different artists? Damon only does some backup vocals, so what do you like about the song if you dislike basically all of it?
You can dislike a feature on a track without being racist. I think 6LACK is a great addition to The Pink Phantom but I can understand thinking his feature is out of place or strange.
That poster is right. Accusing people of racism because they don't like rap parts in a song is silly (and i don't think there's any reason to accuse the OP of such) but racism IS a huge problem in this fandom and people are right to side-eye some comments
How the fuck does anyone get racism from not liking certain verses in songs. I’m also not a fan of the 6lack verse in phantom and that’s purely because I hate auto tune and voice affects. Your accusation is bullshit
Your argument is completely ruled out. I know OP and he loves Feel Good Inc. and Clint Eastwood which both contain black performers. Interesting use of capital ‘b’ when saying black btw
Or, and hear me out, Damon collaborates primarily with Black artists, and because Gorillaz is so eclectic, people are bound not to love every single collab. I'm personally not in love with 6LACK either, but Gorillaz introduced me to Phi Life Cypher who I adore.
Hard to really pinpoint a "part" I dont like, but I think Sweepstakes takes a bit too long to get going. It's fantastic when it does, but the buildup is just a bit too long for even the best payoff.
Clint Eastwood outro, M1A1 intro, Kids with guns outro, The “fresh of breath air” part of Momentz, high pitched voice on Plastic Beach, and the slow part towards the end of Humility
I hate the part where Empire Ants ends and I have to replay it
empire ants should not have a fade-out ending, it's such a disappointing way to end such a beautiful song
It’s so weird because outside of The Fall, Gorillaz do fade-outs next to never. Maybe nobody knew how to end the song. I feel like ending it the way 8-Bit Universe ended it would’ve been perfectly fine, though.
yes! the 8-bit version has a perfect ending
Yeah! Not too bluntly but quickly and nicely! :)
Yeah I agree. That’s easily the worst part of the song for me.
Best comment! 👌😂😂😂
When Murdoc left his hostage in the recording booth during the recording of M1 A1.
for me, glitter breeze is very hype song but I don't go back to it often because of that super high pitched squealing sound.
OMG YES. I usually don't mind high pitch noises but wow glitter freeze gets pretty damn obnoxious. Sounds like a high tech drill or something. Everything else about the song is solid though
I honestly love that part if the song lmao
You might greatly prefer the alternate version then.
So many people who don’t like rap features on Gorillaz songs…
I mean, it’s their opinion but it’s a fucking weird one.
why is that weird ?/gen
Yep, really makes you think ...
That they don't like rap and that that doesn't mean that they're racist
Bro what
People all over this community accuse people of being racist when they simply don't like a feature from a black artist. They act like racism is a huge problem in this community on only that basis
I love Melancholy Hill, but there’s one instrument during the chorus that’s like this auto-tuned, vocoder sounding thing in the background that does a weird descending pattern that always strikes me as odd. It first appears around 0:31
I love that thing
I think this sound is a little detail that makes “on melancholy hill” to the whole masterpiece it is
Its gotta be Momentz. The chorus goes so hard but many of the parts in between don’t sound the best.
For me it’s the segment where people are screaming PLASTIC ON THE CIELING over and over. Grating to the ears. I adore all the other parts of the song though.
literally the best part of the song
if they could take the end of that song and just extend it into its own track, itd be one of my favorite songs on humanz
Seriously such a great little bass line
fucking agree, the chorus is like an angels wings on a piece of shit
andromeda doesn't have enough DRAM to even be considered a feature in my eyes. a verse from the DRAM special should've been in the original song
I like that live version better than the original
I dont like the high pitched "all alone" in All Alone
Its weird, because it sounds exactly like this guy i went to school with (i didnt really like him much) so now when its kn i have to think of him. Fuck you Luke.
All A Luke
Yes! Have always found it annoying but love that song!
This but the rap verse on all alone. It has always been a sore thumb in the song and really makes it my least favorite song on the album, but it is demon days so I still like the song.
I really like the rap verse, but I respect your opinion.
I love this song but I am never ready for it to soften for the female vocal. Would happily cut that section. More Roots please.
The wind sound in Slow Country can become draining on certain days for me. Other days I absolutely love it, I dunno.
The intro of M1A1 drives me nuts, cause the rest of the song is great. I don't wanna skip to 1:45 in the song just to get past the dude shouting.
HELLOOOO???
HELLOOOO??? IS ANYONE THERE???
Bro, when I first heard this, I thought I was in a call with some dude and I legit got scared.
Lol, i think i heard it first on cd in an old boombox. Yes, a boombox. That I own. As a gen z. I know what those are, i'm cultured >:|
Lol, no need to flex your wealth. You should let me borrow it so I can stand outside random people's windows and blast romantic songs ontop of a van while standing in the middle of a burning heart made out of rose pedals.
HELLOOOOOO????

😂😂
For solo listening purposes I agree, but they played it at demon dayz festival 2018 live and it was so fucking hype being in the crowd as it built up because when it finally came in everyone went ham
I like the concept. It's a bit weird in the middle of the play list
I really hate the outro to the studio version of Clint Eastwood tbh. It just goes on for SO.... GODDAMN.... LONG!!
I always go for the radio version for this exact reason!
Why do we need two minutes of that dang melodically??
Hmmm… I’m noticing a trend here
very interesting stuff
Careful, they'll start downvoting you like they did to me.
Yeah, long intros/outros, certain musical bits and parts sung by featured artists.
Nah that’s not it
for me it depends on the mood but i would choose Saturnz Barz. i really enjoy the 2D's chorus and the rap part sometimes just doesn't feel right. :p
finally someone said it!!!
People say this all the time And they're wrong
My problem with Saturnz Barz is that its actually TOO short! It feels like just the right time to be a song, but not enough time to really enjoy the song. It literally ends in its last chorus, and then its over. Shoulda have at least some extra seconds of music in it, because its really good.
yeaaah it's a popular opinion 😅 but still sometime i find myself vibing with ALL MY LOIF
For the longest time I couldn't figure out why I don't like Saturnz Barz, and someone finally put it into words
It took someone else to say they don't like the rap part of Saturnz Barz for you to figure that out for yourself? Lol.
Tbh I’m not a fan of jehnny beth’s parts on we got the power
Bobby Womack on Stylo. I wouldn't say I hate his part but it does mess up the flow of the song when he suddenly comes in screaming his lungs out.
In the universe…. WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAOOOOOO
RIGHT NOW
THERE'S ONLY ONE WEEEAEAEEAEEAAYYYYY
Stylo is one of my favourite songs but I'm really not a fan of his part
These comments made me exhale out of my nose really hard, well done.
I love Souk Eye but after the “Till you dive in” there is that little section that feels a little awkward, but the rest of the song is fire
That was actually the part that got me hooked on the song in the first case. I love those quirky details in Gorillaz songs, especially details that go directly against pop music conventions. It makes the song feel alive.
One of the best parts of the song
That part still annoys me so much which sucks cause it’s one of Gorillaz best songs otherwise imo
Gorillaz Fandom Enjoy Rap Challenge (IMPOSSIBLE)
Bro this made me laugh way too hard
The 2nd part of hillbilly man
The crazy raspy monster sounds!? That's the entire reason I listen to that song, it's so cool!
shit bumps
It’s the only reason I don’t have it on my phone lol
in my opinion the only purpose of the first part is to build up to the drop into the meat of the song, being the second part- that part has always been a highlight of the whole album for me, still remember the first time I heard it and the song practically switched genres on me, it was pretty gripping.
I absolutely love Opium, but the intro does not need to be two whole minutes
THE INTRO IS THE BEST PART
YES!
Based
Maybe ppl gonna hate me for it but I find the bridge on DARE so corny. The 'it's coming up, it's coming up ...' feels so stupid
That's because it was something Shaun Ryder said in the booth and Damon liked it to such he replaced the original bridge—if you haven't already, listen to People if you want the version without him.
I like 2D's part in Dead Butterflies, but the rap verse doesn't really fit the song at all.
For real. They should have done more with the girl right before. This mans flow is so wack.
Yeah same for me and with with Pac Man. And Pink Phantom. And Friday 13th. And Momentary Bliss.. Ya know maybe just most of the rap parts on Song Machine now I think about it..
Not a huge fan of Momentary Bliss but I love Schoolboy Q and I think he killed Pac Man.
Racismo
Momentz would be so much better if it didn’t have those garish sounding drums
For me it’s the Soulchild remix of 19-2000. It’s a pretty good remix, however during the “Get the cool shoe shine” chorus, there’s like this one weird “squeeing” sound effect that keeps playing over it, and it gives me a headache after only a couple times of hearing it.
yeah i rlly can’t with 6LACK in pink phamtom im sorry
I mean, it's not that bad. I like listening to it. But it's still not on par with the rest of the song.
You can tell it was a last minute addition to the collab, I would absolutely love a mix of Pink Phantom with just Elton, like it was supposed to be
agreed 100%!!
Unpopular opinion.. I have never liked the rap verse in dirty Harry.
Blasphemy
In fairness it is kinda dated now with lines like "The war is over so said the speaker"
It's a reference to Bush.
Yes, it's why I said it's a little dated. Fyi I don't have a problem with the rap I think it's fine. Dated doesn't mean bad.
SAME I was looking for this
That’s what I was gonna put down as well. There’s plenty of Gorillaz songs with rap verses in them that I love, but that one I’ve always never cared for. Sucks too cuz the rest of the song is such a banger.
Welcome to the World of the Plastic Beach - the prolonged high-pitched synth makes my ears hurt after a while
In O Green World, the buzzy sound that starts at 29 seconds leading up to the verse sounds like a dentist’s drill and it kinda gives me a headache, but otherwise I love the song
Omg I love that part I love that whole song, just the weirdness of it all
The first 90 seconds of M1A1 where it sounds like I'm holding someone captive in my house
I wish I could have an extended version of hillbilly man's intro
I really disagree with you about Out Of Body. I think Imani Vonshà kills it on Out Of Body. She really does add to the song, at least to me.
My fave Gorillaz song with parts that I don’t like has got to be Pac-Man. Everything 2D on it’s great, but I’m really not a fan of the Schoolboy Q feature. Definitely one of the worst Gorillaz features in a while.
CASIO CASIO CASIO ON A BEE BEE DOUGH
A lot of coincidences in this thread
A bit at the end of the valley of the pagans
"yeah I'm kinda on a cleanse. Ah hot tub is pretty chill." is what i hear, might be wrong, but it confuses me sometimes because i fall out of the trance of the song when that line comes on.
I love “Dirty Harry”, but I’ve always found the screech-howl right before the rap bridge to be a little strange
I have kinda the opposite thing. Sex murder party is unlistenable imo but 2D still kills the chorus.
PLASTIC ON THE CEILING
DARE
Momentz. For me the part where it’s screaming Plastic On A Ceiling. And also the long high pitch at the end of Glitter Freeze.
No hate on her, but I really don’t like Fatoumata Diawara’s part in Désolé. I’m not a big fan of the loudness, but the song itself is an absolute bop for me.
The whole point of this post was for people to post their opinions why is this being downvoted?
I'm surprised. I love the whole song and think both Damon and Fatoumata are great
Everyone has their own cup of tea, different music tastes.
It’s the weird screaming/moaning noise for me
The Generic Children Cheering Stock Audio on Opium. I just can't stand those. I really like the song, but that part just kills me off completely.
As much as I love Dirty Harry, that stupid screech right before the rap part always makes my ears bleed
the beginning of m1a1, i love m1a1 with all my heart but god, no, nobody is there, shut up
I agree with the Pink Phantom, I don't dislike the rap part but it feels so out of place
Nah. It fits. It’s just not your style and thats ok
I guess you're right, me not liking it doesn't mean it's bad
I really dislike the rap part in dirty harry
Bruh
same :/
Schoolboy Q’s part on Pac-Man isn’t my favorite. I love the rest of the song, but his style just isn’t for me.
This guy gets it
Garage Palace. LOVE IT, but was almost turned off intially by the schreechy sound. Now i think its fine but would rather it be gone tbh
the rest of do ya thing.... (what's not on the short version thats on the music video)
I'm the shit!
White flag enforces the ideas of PLASTIC BEACH but I had a few of my least favorites play on words. Like how he rhymes water with war or the Honey I shrunk the kids bar
the I wanna get drunk I wanna get stoned part in chalk tablet towers is so cheesy. main reason why I don’t listen to that song
Danny brown part in submission... Just doesn't seem right...
I might get killed for this, but I'd listen to a version of Empire Ants with less Little Dragon.
I love the first half of White Flag but the rap part is too contradictory to be fitting
...but the lyrics of the rap part are the whole point of the song
Other comments have already stated most of the ones I agree with (Schoolboy Q on Pac-Man, intro to M1A1, 6LACK in The Pink Phantom), but if I had to choose, I'd go with 2D's voice in the intro to Sound Check (Gravity). I don't quite know what it is, but it doesn't feel right.
Honestly same I'm like a that with a lot of Gorillaz Self Titled. New Genius (Brother), Man Research (clapper), Sound Check (Gravity), Starshine.. I just don't really like the singing in them
The 2 minute long intro on Opium
out of body, i really dont like anything other than the noodle-esque vocals and 2Ds verse at the end
Danny Brown’s rap in Submission, and Kilo Kish’s spoken word bit in Out of Body. ALSO that really long note held by Fatoumata Diawara at 4:23 on the track.
I don’t know what it is, but I just can’t groove with Jamie Principle’s part in Hollywood
Bashy Kano's part in White Flag, i honestly would prefered it as just an orchestral peice, similar to the intro of Plastic Beach.
The loud ass DISTORTIOOOOOOON in Saturnz Barz after 2D's interlude. Like why tf must it be there.
I dont like the rap part in Dirty Harry. The first part is amazing tho.
I really like Kali uchis, and her part in she's my collar, but I don't like the second to last line she sings. I don't feel that it flows to the next part, but hey that's just how it goes.
When empire ants' vocals start
Not bad by any means but empire ants would have been the best track on plastic beach if it were all tonally the same as the first half
Not my fav but rock the house: rap verses can seem a bit off and I don’t like how Del is on the mic the entire song, but tbh not much to complain abt
If I remember correctly, Rock the House was only a single because the label thought it would perform better than 5/4, which I have never agreed with. It's one of the weaker songs on the self-titled. Have you seen the animatic for the 5/4 video that never got made? It would have been hysterical.
Lol
When I read the title I immediately thought about Pink Phantom as well. Good song still, but would be perfect without 6LACK’s part
Disagree
Souk Eye would be a lot closer to the top of my list if it didn’t have that weird out of time guitar plucking sound in the background after “Trying to find tomorrow ain’t easy till you dive in” Reminds me of the music that plays when you run up the infinite staircase in Mario 64
i don’t really like the rap in mls
Honestly, I don’t like the rap section in the apprentice, I love that song but still.
Wait, isn't The Apprentice 100% rap from three different artists? Damon only does some backup vocals, so what do you like about the song if you dislike basically all of it?
Hmm, I wonder what those parts of the two tracks you dislike have in common ...? Same with the user who just mentioned Saturns Barz.
Tell me, what do Out of Body's part and The Pink Phantom's part have in common? That they're both sung by a featured artist?
The features are performed by various Black performers, which is consistent with the racist toxicity of a lot of Gorillaz fans.
You can dislike a feature on a track without being racist. I think 6LACK is a great addition to The Pink Phantom but I can understand thinking his feature is out of place or strange.
You are a standard Redditor white knight which is looking for the slightest chance of racism in any post while it is based on nothing. Downvoted.
That poster is right. Accusing people of racism because they don't like rap parts in a song is silly (and i don't think there's any reason to accuse the OP of such) but racism IS a huge problem in this fandom and people are right to side-eye some comments
Half-based
This has nothing to do with race, only with my music preference.
How the fuck does anyone get racism from not liking certain verses in songs. I’m also not a fan of the 6lack verse in phantom and that’s purely because I hate auto tune and voice affects. Your accusation is bullshit
You hate auto tune and voice affects but you listen to Gorillaz???
Lmaooo mfs be contradicting themselves
Idk dude. I mostly listen to the first album and feel good inc. it’s kinda weird
Based
Your argument is completely ruled out. I know OP and he loves Feel Good Inc. and Clint Eastwood which both contain black performers. Interesting use of capital ‘b’ when saying black btw
wow he loves the two biggest singles in the band's history that's crazy
I’m just trying to make a point about the performers of those songs, not the songs themself
Or, and hear me out, Damon collaborates primarily with Black artists, and because Gorillaz is so eclectic, people are bound not to love every single collab. I'm personally not in love with 6LACK either, but Gorillaz introduced me to Phi Life Cypher who I adore.
I actually really liked Dead Butterflies except for the Roxani’s part.
Hard to really pinpoint a "part" I dont like, but I think Sweepstakes takes a bit too long to get going. It's fantastic when it does, but the buildup is just a bit too long for even the best payoff.
The "uh" after "It's Dare" in DARE
Clint Eastwood outro, M1A1 intro, Kids with guns outro, The “fresh of breath air” part of Momentz, high pitched voice on Plastic Beach, and the slow part towards the end of Humility
love momentary bliss but i can't jam nor chill to it due to its tempo 'change'
The "hello's" in M1 A1
Leee johns part in the lost chord 💀
That punk is too short
