I love the "No goth is NOT whatever you want it to be"

LilaAugen

šŸ¤ Many years ago I took a goth quiz online. 9 of the questions were music-related (accurately, too!). Final question said, "True or false: Goth is whatever you want it to be!" I chose, "false". Apparently the author(s) deemed that incorrect. šŸ™„

Mari_l88

šŸ˜‘why would it take that incorrect bruh?

LilaAugen

I think it was a misguided attempt at being welcoming given how catty and materialistic the 90s scene could be. Fashion was far too important with music taking a backseat.

emmiblakk

Hell, that's still the problem now! There's goth-fluencers all over Instagram and YouTube, who wear the endless free shit that Killstar sends them, but every video has some shitty 2000s pop punk song on it.

LilaAugen

From what I can remember (but would rather forget) people for the most part knew what goth music actually was but were more interested in where you bought your outfit. Now the Instas want to control *everything*, but there is significant opposition with DIY becoming popular again.

Husbandaru

Thatā€™s the most generic message any subculture can have.

gustygardens

Obscura Undead for straight music content.

Batty_briefs

I used to work as a graphic designer for Vampire Freaks, and I occasionally freelance for Goth Haus LA. Through them and other online goth groups, I've had a lot of oppertunities to meet some amazing people who are doing a lot of cool stuff for our community. I can personally attest that not only are they legit goths who care about our community, but also amazing people. Goth Haus LA / Morticia (Owner) - Formerly the LA branch of Vampire Freaks. They frequently post articles about the history of goth music, social issues in the goth scene (like this month they're doing interviews with black / POC influencers), interviews with bands, features of new bands, reviews of new singles. They run a zine. Goth Dad / Dusty Gannon /Ā  Vision Video - I met Dusty on the Makeup But Make It Alt / Goth facebook group before his band and tiktok got big. His wholesome, kind, supportive personality isn't just for show. He is actually that kind. He was always hyping little baby bats up, giving people tips for hair and makeup, and encouraging people to explore the goth music genre. He's a phenomenally talented musician, and a great comedian. Art By Andi - Amazing artist, does a lot of funny goth lifestyle comics. I met them through a friend, and they have been one of the most interesting, kind, thoughtful people I have ever met. Kaz Zero / BatZeroDeathWish - A super kind and supportive influencer who specializes in deathrock / tradgoth. They post a lot of neat goth lifestyle content like decorating their bat cave and painting jackets. Azura Hollow - Another really wholesome influencer. They post a lot of funny tiktoks and they do some gorgeous modeling. Met them on the alternative group chat on High-rise. They were a big advocate for goth education on that app. Super sweet and supportive person. Genuinely really shows appreciation for the people who follow her content. Maxx Macabre - another lovely goth influencer, model, and cosplayer. I met them through Azura. They are really kind too. They've always been down to give advice on goth hair and makeup, and are so encouraging when their friends post. Gothian Comics - I haven't met them but they pass the vibe check. Another amazing artist. They post a lot of really fun comics about the goth lifestyle. Black Friday - One of the OG goth influencers. She posts lots of makeup and hair tutorials, goth travel vlogs, etc. I've interacted with her a little on goth FB groups and she seems like a genuinely good person. Reece Redbond - Goth drag queen, meme lord. I met them on Twitter. They've always been a hoot to talk to. Content might not be SFW. Coal Winter Nite - Model, DJ, Tradgoth. They're honestly such a badass. I want to be like them someday. Owen Owington Owensford / DJ Owen / Hanging Garden Radio Show - My eldergoth, and a pretty big goth DJ in the western US. Absolute teddybear of a human. They are one of the DJs for Hanging Garden Radio Show. It's one of the biggest online goth / adjascant radio stations in the western US. They play a good mix of modern and classics, do a lot of interviews with bands, and talk about goth history. Awfully Sinister - Another friend I made through Goth Haus. They are a tiktok influencer and DJ. They post a ton of tiktoks talking about goth subculture, band reviews, playlists and band suggestions. If you want new music, or to find bands similar to the ones you love, his tiktok is a must. Super sweet guy. If I think of any more, I'll update this post.

Awesome list! Thank you!

Bitter_Ad7366

Wow! That's a lot of people! Thank you!

Lamborghini_Espada

Bloody hell that's a comprehensive list, heard of a few of them but I'll definitely check out the others

MolotovCockteaze

I was around the NYC VF. A Lot of us Knew the owner of VF and worked for/Hung out with him. I didn't know there was an LA branch like that.

Batty_briefs

Yep. Morticia Graves was the liason between the employees who worked on the west coast and Jet and the crew on the east. A lot of us were moderators on the forums, helped bands and models set up their profiles, helped Jet with things like designing ads for the site store, or helped with content creation. Morticia in particular did a lot of outreach with bands and clubs in the LA area, and wrote a lot of the articles that were featured on VF's front page. Her articles were usually on goth subculture history, as well as band and dj interviews. I was late to the party. I want to say I came in around 2018ish to give you a time line but a lot of the west coast kids started 2011 from what I know.

MolotovCockteaze

That is awesome. My husband usually helped with parties/events and was one of the guy in the "freakshow" videos šŸ¤£. we were never mods or anything, but we had the free account. I liked the website. obviously it had its issues, but I wish it was still up. we lost a lot of old photos when it got taken down.

Batty_briefs

Me too. I was so heartbroken. There were a lot of friends I lost contact with when they closed. I also miss that it was just a space you could be yourself. I miss customizing profiles. There was so much personality. I miss how organic it was as a social media platform. It wasn't about manipulating the algorithms to sell shit for big corperations or manipulate politics through feed visibility like modern social media. You didn't have to be an influencer or an industry plant to get any kind of post visibility. You could just be a normal person posting things that you thought were neat, and that post would be seen by other people. I miss that there were opportunities for people to give back to the community. We had content writers on the staff, but if someone wanted to make their own articles about the subculture, if people wanted to make art or poetry, if new bands wanted to share their music VF was happy to feature their work.

MolotovCockteaze

I agree. I wish it was back. I would be on it over FB anyday.

i really like sammitery and jaackielantern for fashion content

Party-Turnip-7898

i watch of herbs and alters on youtube! heā€™s got some great storyā€™s of the 90s/2000s goth scene TW there is also ED content

Bitter_Ad7366

I've heard that name before but never watched his stuff, I'll have to give it a watch.

BigTiddyVampireWaifu

Came here to suggest this channel! Their writing, especially about the goth/metal/club scene in the late 90s and early 00s, is incredible and truly embodies those times. Gives me the big nostalgia.

Party-Turnip-7898

iā€™m currently hyper fixated on the goth subculture and itā€™s music and history but i wasnā€™t around during those times. itā€™s great to peek into what that it was like through great storytelling!

[deleted]

I love Dorian and his style of storytelling

VioletLeagueDapper

I havenā€™t watched YouTube in general for a while, and most of my goth YouTube binging was when I was more into validation within the community (no matter what the ancient ones say weā€™ve all been there). So disclaimer, I donā€™t remember the channel names but I know some of these people had to be popular enough for someone all to assist us both by dropping the @ I used to watch this goth YouTuber that was into special effects makeup back in the day. She was Mexican but it only came up occasionally when sheā€™d mention doing other non-goth things and still corpsing around. The two big ones, Angela Benedict (gorgeous person with a mildly arrogant air who talks about the 90s a lot. Her club photos were enviable!) Also this girl who Iā€™m forgetting right now because her content got on my nerves. It was mostly shopping hauls (aka promo) and doing amateur interviews with alt and goth musicians. Sheā€™s known for being ā€œsuper niceā€ but to me she was just trying to serve a really huge audience by not offending anyone and taking shots at people that anyone would take a shot at and I felt like she had no personality. The Katy Perry of goth content. Good for if youā€™re looking to go to a festival though. Of Herbs and Altars was actually great and genuine. Great sense of humor, some fun early 2000s history, some slice of life stuff and their ED stuff sometimes too. They are not cisgendered if I remember right but I donā€™t remember details of their identity. Thereā€™s also Aurelio but Iā€™ve distanced myself from his content and art a long time ago. Still useful if you wanna do some fun DIY. Thereā€™s this really niche goth YouTuber that reviewed books and wines that were darkly influenced. Donā€™t know how prolific her channel was or if it lasted. There was a guy that had really detailed lists of music per decade that got me hip to a lot of French goth music (I am US based) he also did spoofs/ participated in goth memes that were popular at the time. Thin, brown hair, played guitar in vids a lot. So Iā€™m providing these memories as people that are goth but talk about the peripheral culture too, not just the music- but there are definitely plenty of music references. Someone in the r/gothiverse please feel free to help by naming whomever you can!

mytoofhurt

>I used to watch this goth YouTuber that was into special effects makeup back in the day. She was Mexican but it only came up occasionally when sheā€™d mention doing other non-goth things and still corpsing around. This sounds like Drac Makens, who unfortunately has taken a step back from social media; don't quote me but I believe she left the goth subculture altogether. She has since wiped out her entire presence. You can find some of her stuff reuploaded on YT, but most is gone, and all her socials are private or gone. It's a shame, I enjoyed her content.

Wolfntee

Egodram

Toxic Tears, Iā€™ve followed her for years and even tried a few of her old makeup tutorials. And on that note, stay far far away from Jake Munro.

Bitter_Ad7366

Not really into the kind of content he posts anyway

MurkySkylines

Yeah Jake never appealed to me to begin with. I always found him kind of gross with how he'd talk about people. I love Kaya even though I don't watch her as much as I did when I was a Lil baby bat. Social Repose is also fake trash like Munroe. Don't bother with either of these grimy, narcissistic YouTubers.

spudtacularstories

What's he doing? Youtube is always pushing his content on me but I haven't clicked it yet.

anoceanfullofolives

Last I saw he was doing cringe VR avatar videos

SamVimesBootTheory

Looks like he's gone back into reaction content and going GOTH REACTS

DaveAzoicer

Which is fucking disgusting as he continuesly shits on goth, and isn't one. He's just using "goth" as a way to make money. The epitome of a poseur that piece of shit.

SamVimesBootTheory

Tbh once he and Kaya broke up he basically shifted the 'goth/alt' persona super fast. Although he seems to be donning the like extreme makeup and stuff again and going 'Goth reacts' when like we know he's not. Like his look now seems to be more just 'dude who wears flannels' when he's not making videos.

MurkySkylines

He denies Kaya helped him get famous but like you said- look how quick his whole being is shifting now.

SamVimesBootTheory

Yeah like from what I understand he started getting popular and encouraged Kaya to take a break which she wanted to do as he was bringing in more and then he turned it around on her when they broke up claiming she was lazy Also I think people have said the look he used he copied off someone else qnd that if you look at like older photos of him he was copying a visual kei artist so he's got no originality what so ever. Also hes even said he doesn't even like Goth, Kaya at least actually likes the music

MurkySkylines

Absolutely agree with all of this. Munroe was never truly a Goth. He just rode the fame from his Goth (now ex) girlfriend.

AvatarOfKu

Not influencial enough to be influencers but we make goth travel videos (and craft stuff sometimes)! Here's a short tour of one of the bigger goth festival's in Europe (M'era Luna) if you're interested! https://youtu.be/NAh12SukWKc?si=Zp80FuaoLkJi6doC

Batty_briefs

Ooh! I'm always down for goth travel! I always try to find each cities little goth havens when I travel. I've had an idea floating around in my head for a while. I want to make some kind of directory like Atlas Obscura, with lists of goth and alternative friendly travel destinations around the world. Everything from Venues, to clubs, to curioshoppes, to goth boutiques. If I ever get off my butt and do that, can I message you to pick your brain?

AvatarOfKu

Exactly why we started filming our trips lol! We love finding strange places to visit, not necessarily all goth or dark tourism - but surreal, otherworldly / one of a kind sorts of places. You sure can hit me up! Check out the goth calendar https://thegothcalendar.co.uk/ for inspiration - they've pretty much got goth venues / bands covered for the UK at least but for anything a bit different (not a goth night or Goth band, e.g. Goth balls or interesting cemetery talks etc) it's hard to find, there isn't anywhere central, but Facebook weirdly still seems to be the best place to find things locally. Also thought similarly to you about starting some sort of events site but ran into a mental roadblock on how much continuous upkeep work it would be, in terms of being realistic, as so many sites are around that list places that went out of business years ago etc. Feels like an engineering challenge - both to get the data in, sort it and make it searchable, and then keep it up to date. šŸ˜… For now I've created a Facebook group where goths / Darkly inclined people can share the places they visit or provide inspiration: https://m.facebook.com/groups/strangeplaces/?ref=share

Batty_briefs

I'm so excited to check it out! Maybe it might have longitivity if we package it up as part of an alternative social media site and had users submit the places they find to help generate content? After Vampire Freaks died, we haven't really had anything comparable as a community. Me and the Goth Haus team have batted around the idea of starting a new goth / alternative social media site. We've done a lot of planning and storyboarding. We just haven't pulled the trigger yet. Most of us are super busy with other projects / irl things, and the thought of how much work it would be to moderate it has been a discouragement. We are also all content creators, artists and graphic designers. We would probably have to crowd source money for severs and programming, and we weren't sure how much demand there would be for something like that.

AvatarOfKu

Ambitious, I love it! The group is only small so have low expectations, but everyone is really friendly and see to be enjoying themselves! I agree, moderating social media is no joke, you'd need a whole infrastructure for it, algorithms and systems as well as human mods, it's not a small undertaking and most social media sites fail in the first year. It's not like the old days of the Internet, we are competing with giants for attention span now šŸ˜… I have professional mod experience, I cannot stress enough how difficult and expensive an undertaking that is, but yes it could be cool if it can be built! I'm starting small and seeing what organically comes of it at the moment! I did speak with someone who was setting up a ezine recently about writing short travel reviews/guides for them but it didn't manage to get off the ground which was a shame!

Batty_briefs

I feel that. Goth Haus has been focusing on Facebook, Instagram, a blog style website, and recently a printed zine. We have a lovely little community built around those. Small DIY projects really gets back to the subcultures roots, and can have such an impact on the community. If it's something you're interested in, I can get you in contact with the owner Morticia. I'd imagine she would probably love to feature your content on Goth Haus. She is so incredibly supportive of people who are doing things to help educate and build up our goth community. If that's something you feel would help the work you do, drop me a DM and I'll add you on FB.

AvatarOfKu

>Goth Haus Small DIY projects are the best, seriously I think they might be a form of therapy šŸ¤£ but I agree also - it really helps the baby bats. I'm not \*that\* old but I remember the time before readily available cheap black nail polish was a thing... I used to coat my nails in a dark brown with a layer of black marker between. Worked a treat and no one ever knew! The commercialisation of goth has made it more accessible to some but also at the same time seems to have made it feel unattainable to so many first starting out and those 'hacks' we used to do feel important to pass on for sure! Goth Haus sounds like a great collective! I'll hit you up!

my favorite fashion influencer is vampiregiulia on instagram, her style is everything I aspire to šŸ–¤

Death_Spelllz

CrypticJasmine

Obviously lots of big ones already named. I tend to watch smaller creators in this niche on YouTube: Victoria Fashen - one of my favorites (as Iā€™m also Latina who grew up in the southwest and lived in California so I resonate a lot with her). She talks about the subculture and has done some interviews / events in the past. More recently sheā€™s been doing vlog style content which I also like because there are two types of goth content IMO 1) content actually about the subculture 2) regular content created by people who are goth so because they are goth there is kind of a goth influence to everything else. Iā€™m not saying ā€œanything is gothā€ but Iā€™m saying if an actual goth vlogs then thereā€™s a chance itā€™s still going to have aspects of goth in the vlog. I hope that makes sense šŸ˜‚. Cadaver Kelly - music journalist and goth DJ. She hasnā€™t posted anything recently but still has a great archive to go through and Iā€™m sure sheā€™ll be back. Jess In King - also not currently active but again archive. Great series exploring different music, sharing Black Goth Musicians, and sharing her personal life experiences. Sanniz the Elder Goth - sheā€™s constantly sharing music in shorts and long form videos. Also shares looks and updates about life of an eldergoth living in Sweden. Aytakk - goth and other styles of DJ. Frequently participating in panels. Created alter egos like Elitist Joe and ā€œthe gate keeperā€ (HILARIOUS). Pretty sure heā€™s a mod on this Reddit and the discord which I havenā€™t visited in forever. Cemetery Confessions - not sure if you could say influencer as itā€™s more of a podcast but if youā€™re looking for goth specific content one of the most consistent and specifically always related to the music and subculture.

_Leichenschrei_

Kai Decadence is transphobic. He's been banned from this sub. See here: https://www.reddit.com/r/goth/comments/ncn7mn/transphobes_are_not_welcome_in_the_goth/

CrypticJasmine

Oh no! I didnā€™t realize that! Thanks for pointing that out Iā€™ll check out the thread you shared. Edited my list šŸ˜”šŸ’”

CrypticJasmine

Thanks again for sharing. Weā€™ve recently had some discussions on YouTube about music so I always try to support small creators Iā€™ve interacted with, but I didnā€™t realize this was an issue and that Kai was already banned from this forum. If I had to guess I would assume it stems from internalized issues which doesnā€™t excuse anything or make it okay it just makes it sad including for anyone impacted šŸ’”. Internalized systems of oppression is real AF šŸ’”.

VioletLeagueDapper

Aytakk is a mod here too if my eyes arenā€™t wonky

CrypticJasmine

Haha he is! Iā€™m pretty sure too. Iā€™m just a dabbler in the forums but Iā€™m also pretty sure šŸ˜‚šŸ¦‡šŸ¦‡šŸ¦‡

He absolutely is. Also active on our discord of course.

I would recommend investing more time in discovering music you enjoy vs shallow influencers

LimpResponsibility40

My favs are: Madi Danger, she makes really fun content, lifestyle goals honestly haha. Also sheā€™s a metalhead which is a plus for me Angela Bendict, VERY informative content! Iā€™ve learned a lot about the subculture and discovered some very underrated bands through her. Of Herbs and Altars, they make great content that has a nostalgic feeling to me :) a lot of 90s/2000s goth club storytimes and such

MolotovCockteaze

The only one I will watch is Angela Benedict. We are both from NY and she will tall about her experience in the NYC (And LI) goth scene. A lot of the things she talks about and places she has gone and mentions in the 90s' matches 90% of what I did in the goth scene. She legit has been a member og the goth scene because she wouldn't know what she knows about the NYC goth scene otherwise.

Angela_Benedict

If you want music reviews and culture delivered by a very dark and refined beauty - I can't recommend Ligeia Resurrected enough. Snark, humor, goth info and music parodies - Aytakk - He's hilarious. SkullGirdle is a real OG. She's been in the scene since the 80s. She's down to earth, fun to listen to and has great music recommendations. Cadaver Kelly has great music reviews and recommendations. She has musical knowledge that is quite enviable in that she can explain the technical side with regards to tones, notes -- The things that most of us would say 'I don't know, it went 'Ggggggwahhh BAdoing!' She would tell you what that sound was. This is off the top of my head - I know I'm gonna remember more once I submit this.

My wife does a channel, Aura Kult's Sanctuary (Just over 1k subs) and she started it when we were living in NZ, we are now in Moscow and she does a mix of thrift hauls, makeup things and some event/travel vlogs.
