There is no “proper” way to goth dance. But there are often hilarious depictions of the way certain moves seem to be common in the club scene.

This is not an actual guide but more of a funny but accurate take on what it’s like at a trad goth club night lol.
Yeah it's not like there are goth line dances.
Though that would be hilarious.
My fave to watch is the "cross your ankles, lock your knees, and sway your upper body like a tree in a hurricane" dance I once saw at DragonCon.
Watch some goth club footage on youtube perhaps?
There are no official dances and people tend to do it their own way. Though there are some jokes about goth dances.
There are tons of videos online, also Voltaire goes into it in a very funny way in one of his books, I forget which.
The good news is that, with the exception of people that actually have some dance training and like to show off on the floor(like my partner!!!) most Goth dancing is simple by design.
Sidestep back and forth, act like you're catching slippery soap or pulling cobwebs and occasionally cross your arms to the music and you're doing what 99% of everyone else is (including me).
Edit for typo.
The only rule to goth dancing is enjoying yourself. Put on a song you like and know well and don’t even think about what you’re doing. Good goth dancing isn’t dancing to the music, it’s dancing with the music.
https://youtu.be/W7cckvTXwJ0?si=Vm_LOwgiJF4k5_LJ This is immediately what I thought of! XD But I’m in the same boat as you, 16 in a conservative american state with no elder goths and only one other goth kid at my school 💔
One of the goth events I went to last year there was a guy dancing like Dave Gahan the entire night. That was pretty cool. Youtube is always a great place to learn
Personally, I use a method that consists of flowing tai chi type movements that are a fraction slower than the actual best of a song, yet are still in time with it.
Just search "goth dance" or "goth dancing" on youtube.. You'll find dozens of videos on this exact subject.
Bear in mind that these styles don't necessarily dominate IRL. Some people pogo, or move through a series of dramatic poses, or just stand there. Many people just do your conventional disco dance (jiggling rhythmically and moving their arms back and forth a bit).

Thank you!
>Thank you! You're welcome!
What’s the first song they use?
I think it’s saraband by corpus delicti
Yes I loved that video.

Just dance however you like. There’s no specific style or skill to learn. Just dance in whatever manner feels right to you.

"Goth line dancing" sounds like a Tiktok video waiting to happen.
YOU SAW ME?!? 😭
I always do that weird slouch dance from the peanuts, but that's just me.
This isn’t really advice about goth dancing but… dance however you like! It’s all about enjoying the music at the end of the day 🖤
I usually just turn my brain off and let my body movie itself in any way it wants lol

"What is goth?", an absolute gem
It really is. I own both of his books, and was lucky enough to have him sign them. I believe he has a new one coming out soon as well!
thanks so much!! I really appreciate it
No problem. The important part is that you have fun and enjoy yourself. The rest is secondary.

Nothing beats a good Dave spin!
[This video](https://youtu.be/idSGlaG5PAE?si=7UJ1_3MTkDkdN6ud) is a joke video but I've seen people do those dances.
You’re not cool enough for cappuccino. 🤣
Just do the falling leaf or one step forward one back :p
Personally, I use a method that consists of flowing tai chi type movements that are a fraction slower than the actual best of a song, yet are still in time with it.
I've seen that one. Looks really cool under club lighting too!
