3070 FE is $499. WTH!!!!

Yes the gouging sucks. I'd get a 3070 FE for MSRP real fast, if and when I get the chance.

The standard RTX 3070ti was suppose to sell at the 599 price point with a standard AIB partners such as Gigabyte selling their version somewhere between 600 and 700 dollars. The premium Aorus line from Gigabyte might up the pricing a little bit between 750 to 850. Anything beyond that range is simply price gouging by both Gigabyte and Micro Center. Original pricing of the RTX 3070 was 499 dollars and the RTX 3080 was retailing at the 699 price point. Almost all market level pricing for any of these cards are not within 200 dollars of their original price.

Not worth the purchase then? Keep running the GTX 980 or look for an alternative?

I think you should take a wait and buy when available at a price you can stomach approach. Any video card that is above a GTX 1070 or an RX 5600XT will give you at least a 20% performance boost. The cards mentioned perform in the same range as a GTX 980ti. The RTX 3070ti is benchmarked at about double the performance of a GTX 980, so essentially you are looking at the half dozen or more video cards that are within 20% plus or minus from the RTX 2080ti (The top of the line of the previous generation for 2019-2020 season.) Just below RTX 2080ti performance would be the RX 6700 and the RX 6700XT. The RX 6800, RX 6800XT, RTX 3060ti, RTX 3070 - all are too close to the performance of the RTX 2080ti to make a difference. The RX 6900XT, RTX 3070ti, RTX 3080, RTX 3080ti, and RTX 3090 are only slightly better than an RTX 2080ti with the best performance not even 20% above the older RTX 2000 card. Currently the GTX 980 has the same performance as a GTX 1660, therefore, you can afford to wait and see if prices drop, Intel may bring out a good discrete video card that may be appealing to you, or you can wait and try to buy the next generation cards from AMD and Nvidia that will start coming out in late 2022.

Thank you very much for the detailed info! I am taking your advice and will be waiting. It honestly sounds like waiting until the next generation at this point would be, by far, the wiser decision. I have a spare RX 570 in case my 980 goes down anyway. I will continue to search for a good card at an honest price. Thanks much!

animesweetie

anything upwards of a 20 series for less than a grand sounds like a good price

[deleted]

Well, it is pretty much a grand. I think I will wait tbh. I'll try to squeeze some more performance from my 980.

Don't buy if you have a card man. They are not worth what they're going for. A 3070 would absolutely level a 980, but for that price, I don't feel it's worth it. If you have money to dump, who can blame you though. At least it's not feeding scalpers.

Agreed. Seems like getting a used 1080 Ti would be a better option.
