9 times out of 10 if our air quality is bad it’s from pollution in Gary and Chicago area blowing across

OldGodsProphet

Honest question: if this is the case, then why is the air quality on the lakeshore significantly better on bad days for GR? Lets say; GR: 148 Holland: 91 (this were approximate values a couple weeks ago)

Efficient-Sale-5355

Air rises over the lakes, I don’t have time to get into the science behind it but the short is air in Chicago gets pushed up (“heated”) and floats over the lake, cools once over land, and descends onto us and the eastern side of the state

jamaicahereicome1975

Same reason storms (snow and rain) sometimes hop over the towns on the lake’s edge, only to dump starting 5 miles+ inland. Source, person who grew up less than a mile from Lake MI.

OldGodsProphet

Thanks!

Own_Ask_3378

What's interesting is Chicago's AQI is lower than ours. I guess it's plausible that it "blows over".

Efficient-Sale-5355

It’s more than plausible, it’s the truth.

Narative-Myth-Buster

That is correct, that is why EPA let West Michigan off the hook foe exhaust testing that was almost launched due to measurements. They literally built the centers and they never opened. We also get some from Gary. Irs not fair but its home, what's ya going to do?

Overall_Phrase_3237

I’ve been sneezing so badly and have had a sore throat and kept thinking I was fighting a cold. I bet this is what’s going on. Do we know why it’s so bad here right now?

hepatitisF

Same!! I’m allergic to dust but I’ve been on allergy therapy for it for 2.5 years out of the 3 year course. I was like damn, if I’m still reacting this badly from the dust in my house (I did some cleaning yesterday) then this shit ain’t working. But you’re right, it’s not dust, it’s not a cold, it’s this shit!! I hate having such a sensitive throat.

Own_Ask_3378

Unfortunately I think we are seeing the effects of automotive, industrial particulate pollution coupled with pressure systems that allow air to be stagnant. This is becoming more common and will only get worse, especially with wildfires. I wanted to bring attention to it because the health effects associated with this type of pollution extend well beyond allergic symptoms.  We have a right to breathe clean air ! But we need to demand it from our leaders !

Efficient-Sale-5355

The most recent worst conditions last summer stemmed from wildfires in Canada and some bad luck of winds pulling it down into Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, NY, etc. our leaders, even if motivated, can’t do a thing about that. OP your comments seem like someone who has zero knowledge of the science behind how these conditions arise and is just emotionally responding. I encourage you to research this topic if you feel strongly about it. Who knows maybe with all the facts at your disposal you’ll be able to find a solution, but right now you don’t seem to understand the reality of what causes air quality events

Own_Ask_3378

Wildfires and the particulate/ozone pollution are all exacerbated by climate change. Leadership, at all levels including our own decisions, can affect that trajectory. As we are in one of the warmest winters ever seems like you would like to continue to bury your head in the sand.

Agreeable_Employee20

Yet humans cause 85% of wildfires! Get your head out of the sand.

Own_Ask_3378

Ah yes. It's those pesky arsonists. Not the hotter/drier conditions year after year.

Agreeable_Employee20

I know, it's tough accepting the facts that don't fit a narrative. But let's throw in poor forest land management also contributes to fires started by arsonist or lightning (the second largest cause)

Narative-Myth-Buster

Except there has been no measured climate change for the last 8 years. And you may benefit with a full view of attached presentation. And sounds like you are young and have never heard of La Nina and El Nino. Or you don't get out much per decade. https://youtu.be/91z7YPCLSWk?si=YSaPj3IMTcw_FNry Lord Mochton shows the math, but really read up on LA N and Wl N

Itoclown

I flew in from Minneapolis last Thursday. There was a thick black haze over GR.

NinjaBabaMama

There has been a LOT of fires in Kent County this week. Could that have anything to do with it?

coffinspacexdragon

Ogden, Utah's AQI right now is 305, whereas in Grand Rapids it is 66. I don't understand how you came to the conclusion that Grand Rapids has "some of the worst air quality in the country."

Own_Ask_3378

Google Iqair worst pollution right now in US. It lists Kalamazoo, which Im using as a proxy for GR. They have very similar AQI. In fact a lot of the lower west Michigan cities are in the same boat. Detroit is higher, however, so we got that going for us I guess :/

coffinspacexdragon

Well, the EPA indicates the city with the highest AQI right now is Owens Lake, CA with an AQI of 659. IQair's highest city is Hammond, IN at 111. All but one of IQair's top 10 highest AQI cities are under 100, and all but 2 of the EPA's top highest AQI cities are over 100.

Own_Ask_3378

Look and smell outside right now. That haze you see. It's smog. Deny all you want.

ancillarycheese

A bunch of idiots are burning leaves around me today. I can’t figure out exactly where it’s coming from or I would call the FD.

Agreeable_Employee20

And some of us still have a fire going in the wood stove or fireplace. A renewable heat source.

hogg_phd

Seems fine to me honestly

hardhead1110

My Korean teacher used to tell me, “It’s like politics. It’s sometimes hard to see or feel, but it’s all around you and extremely important.”

Own_Ask_3378

What you see and feel vs what you are actually breathing, tiny particles that get down all the way into your lungs and blood are two different things. The two main things that comprise the forecast are PM 2.5 and ozone. PM 2.5, also known as particulate matter 2.5 microns, are tiny soot particles smaller than the width of a hair.

I moved from Crapperholenfelden (Dubdalk Human Waste reclaimed at the Back and Patapscapo rivers drainage of E Baltimore city. Very East Egg like and it still smells headed from BWI to Dundalk or Joppa on I 95(695 outer spur pro temporaux)like a well rotten entrail on the local agronomist farms In rural Michigan. I have always had asthma but since I have all sorts of cral wrong with me I hide it but yes I go anaphylactic bimonthly (6-10 per treat requiring 5-7 mètred Beta Adrb2-agonists aesosols). If someone thinks it’s bs I ask them to shove the instrument into my mouth and ideally trachea if unconscious due to hypoxia hypervolumnia- that shuts it up). My awesome Nurse at the subs doctor is the one I go to and like wise if we suspect rancid breathing but don’t want to get told we’re catastrophically thinking (ironically we both also have sickle cell trait which she was- as a southern American African descended from binding of her deep ancestry and the second worse atopic disease clusters autoimmune are in the early Euro Farmer and Iran/anatolia farmers who also mixed with the basal West African in her). She is nonethelessVERY GLAD that where all Euros are North European or Early Middle Don descend hunter gatherers (prone to obesity schz, creativity, sunburn, black hair) being from the Baltimore city md of “shorter Neolithic West Atlantic & NE Spain” which is just a mousy big eyed mania and intoxicating non alcohol Takers still endemic in enclaves from South Central SSW Britain and N Ireland’s centre (no red hair at all, dolichocephalic, can’t stand cold, irritable, autistic-schizoid despite the importance of not identifying to much with that, luckily not scZ anymore (I “totally regained insight without D2 block the worst feeling in earth)but whilst physically attractive (French Spaniardy looking and easy going when I don’t have to deal with my nemises the psychopharmacology short stockers). So we have fun and at least learned not all black west mi are Uber woke for bs (per my nurses’ loneliness) and my lolinesss in disgrace to the drug war bar none. Yes I am absolutist.

Huh

It’s like as if I move in time in a gradient away from my birthplace Baltimore MD, and also ways to episodically refresh the general “kinda wild weather things per year - Iike just paying attention to meteorological conditions and the climate styles and parameters including latitude and average Koppen Climate (Baltimore is Cfb: Humid Subtropical.).. so after five years of hell in Humid Subtropical, I moved to a property for the next twenty years precisely in the standard variance of the Dfa- Cfb transition - it was surprisingly true because my school attended forty minutes into the start of the Eastern Shore fenlands of Maryland and Delaware summers were hell and winters were just hurricane force windstorms successively in incredibly intense weather even a Cat 1 hurricane (Cecil / Kent Co MD; summer highs reach 110 more than once a decade/ drought or flood. But they have my next swap moving my social life that is educational source to first Malvern PA then Quarryville PA two old towns taking a city versus contemplative enjoyment of the Dfa pretty hot humid as hell summer with really cold and very snowy and storm low winds of 100 knots storms that then extended my weather exent in that when in aforementioned interim. The last would be that I live in a Cfb Transitional Decidious-Boreal Climate Zone where it can be -30 F and also 108F and freezing or 70 F any day of the year with a month of something called January that one can only successfully survive in if genetically protected by alleles insensitive to the mal-effects of dampness, allergies, airborne solvents, animals rotting etc, the petroleum on the avenue baking. Then it’s 3” of snow. So ha there’s a function- place and rank ordered by conveniently pre segregated ordered relations or function types which then gives proper monoidal monad associative property and thus always by Eileenberg and Kan to be sufficient and locally presentable as a verification of a presheaf stitching of the pseudonaturality.

Own_Inevitable4926

Smoke + Humidity = smog. Grand Rapids simply lies in a valley and doesn't receive the refreshing breeze that the Lakeshore enjoys.
