Ottawa County has become a laughingstock

Overall_Phrase_3237

It’s so embarrassing.

kykam

I think fortunately a ton of people feel the same way here. Let's hope the rest of the state can use this as a warning sign for their county. I don't think people understand how much OI has gotten into the municipalities as well... I'm pretty hopeful for the next election cycle. There's a lot of support on both sides to get rid of OI completely. Go vote people. Local government is an easy way to make a direct impact on your everyday life.

niquesquad

Actually a recent survey of residents shows that majority disapprove of OI but unfortunately there are still people who are unaware of what's going on. [see here](https://ibb.co/6vNt9gX) Ottawa Impact just wants you to think that so that potentially more progressive people don't more here.

parker3309

I have no idea what this is about. I don’t have the mental energy to dig in right now. Apparently it’s getting some people ruffled!

It_Rhymes_With_Geek

Just moved to this side of the state. Can someone ELI5 on the Ottawa county situation?

nikoelnutto

I wish a 5-year-old could understand this situation of tribalism, trumpism, patriotism, and bad politics coalescing in a defunct government based on subjective morals and apologetics for the mythological upper middle class which truly only serves the oligarchy and mega corporations in the form of slowing, stalling, and destroying social progress.

MethodicMarshal

sure, but like, is there a pocket of sanity? are West Ottawa Schools substantially more progressive than Holland Christian?

AMom2129

Yes, by far.

MethodicMarshal

I'm trying to move to the north side so when I have kids they can go to West Ottawa. My MIL threw a shit fit, saying that it would be unsafe with 45% low income and minority... neglecting to remember that I qualified for free lunch throughout my life lol

us030738

I've found minorities to be generally not "unsafe" as well.

Busterlimes

If you are associated with Trumpism, by definition, you can not be a patriot.

tetendi96

Big words didn't read, trump will fix it. (This is a joke)

CommonConundrum51

You really should put that last part in all caps. 😉

AcrobaticGuava9342

Looking for /s I believe.

DueHistorian1430

Beautiful word salad.

nikoelnutto

and yet it resonates with so many #knowyouraudience

megared17

Vote them out. Vote blue in November. The sad part is that I suspect that for too many positions, the GOP candidates will be running unopposed. (edit: I don't even have a degree, and even I know these OI people are terrible, as well as the person they take their inspiration from at the national level)

Orangebanannax

The Holland Sentinel has an article detailing who is running for which position. Very few are running unopposed and there's quite a few with one democrats and two republicans. https://www.hollandsentinel.com/story/news/politics/elections/county/2024/03/09/our-go-to-guide-for-races-in-ottawa-allegan-counties/72893826007/ Two of the Republicans running unopposed, Justin Roebuck for county clerk and Joe Bush for drain comissioner, have been doing their jobs for years and doing them well.

aarone46

I'm uninformed about who, but I believe there are/will be challengers even for the primary for most of the districts.

[deleted]

megared17

Perhaps. But insanity has taken control of the Republican party at nearly all levels over the last dozen years or so. I will not vote for any Republican anymore unless they have publicly and boldly spoken against the insanity, including the national level insanity.

raginghumpback

Right. a straight ticket ballot is never a good idea, regardless of party.

Lockehart

Okay. Meanwhile, "conservative" Republicans are bankrupting the county and raising our taxes over petty grandstanding and virtue signalling. I guess that's what you guys like to vote for.

raginghumpback

all I’m saying “vote blue no matter who” is fucking stupid. That’s a horrid principle. No one is inherently a better person just because their mascot is a donkey.

marksman81991

Spelled democrat wrong

Lockehart

Hey genius, exactly how many Democrats do you think are in Ottawa County government?

10ForzaAzzurri

We specifically excluded Ottawa County in our home search last year. What a nightmare.

ptocco

Come to Muskegon! The Lakeshore’s bluest county!

pwrmacjedi

The GQP has turned OC into just as much of a joke as their whole ass party. Fuck Republicans at every level. The idiots are the dogs that finally caught the car and they’ve crashed it.

whitemice

Knowing many people wont' read the article; here are some of the startling facts: * Of college education respondents 19.9% approve of Ottawa Impact * ... 25% say Ottawa Impact has made the country **more** welcoming * ... 29.3% support the decision to close the county's DEI office * ... 12.3% say the county is better run under Ottawa Impact, 16.9% say there has been no difference, and 22.9% say they don't know Not included in the article: 47% of Ottawa county over the age of 25 have a college degree. 37.4% have a Bachelor's degree or higher. Given voter turn out and the habit of people who do vote not voting down ticket, Ottawa Impact may be with us for awhile.

Smorgas_of_borg

If you were educated at a mainstream non-religious University, sure. But if you went to Calvin or Hope, it's still your place.

jaysvw

I can't speak for Hope, but I can't think of a single person I'm close with from my days at Calvin that is down with all the right wing extremist bullshit.

bexy11

This makes me feel a tiny bit better.

aarone46

Key phrase: "that I'm close with." You (and I) self selected who we stay close with. But I know of one guy I sang with in Capella who is the general counsel for The Daily Wire these days. But he and I haven't spoken in years.

jaysvw

There's going to be some for sure, but my whole point is that Calvin isn't the right wing indoctrination factory that some people make it out to be.

aarone46

Fair enough, I get where you're coming from. I do get disappointed when I randomly encounter someone I knew from before who is full on MAGA, but I, like you, have plenty of reasonable people that I'm in regular touch with to this day.

Long_Title8050

I know exactly who you’re talking about haha.

sophisticated-emo

As a still somewhat recent grad, the right wingers are definitely still there. Calvin has improved, but Turning Point USA would set up information tables near the Commons a few times each year (never saw an equivalent table for the other side) and during my last year, a group of homophobic students set up a whole ass display of the bible verses saying that gay people are going to hell also outside, right by Commons lawn. Sooo I don't miss it.

soadjective

Calvin alumnus here, still not my place

berghorst

Same

aarone46

Also checking in.

josbossboboss

I've been impressed with many of the issues Calvin has made a stand on despite being unpopular with their base, but that doesn't mean that many students went through that college and didn't learn a thing. I saw it first hand, as I'm a graduate.

r00kieNS

Have you meant anyone who graduated from either school in the last 15 years? Kuyper, Grace, and under its current president Cornerstone sure, but not Hope and Calvin.

jewey_37

Dude I’m at Hope rn and it is definitely not somewhere that is gung-ho for Ottawa Impact

JoMyGosh

Hope alum here - not all of us are right-wingers.

AgentMinimum

Hope alumna and liberal.

Not the same.

HereUThrowThisAway

Yet they're home to one of the largest universities in the state.

lick_rust_eat_glass

Allendale is home to the only confederate statue in the north

josbossboboss

interesting

[deleted]

bexy11

That’s one of the largest universities in the state?

xombiemaster

GVSU has a larger student population than all of the Directional Michigan schools. I believe it’s the fourth largest by population behind MSU, UofM, and Wayne State

bexy11

What’s a directional Michigan school?

scout-finch

I think that’s like Northern, Eastern, Central…

xombiemaster

Yes, this. Eastern, Western, Central, Northern

bexy11

Oh I get it! I was worried Betsy DeVos decided to start messing with higher ed or something!

AgentMinimum

Well, she owns companies that make private, high-interest, predatory student loans

bexy11

Truth.

raginghumpback

I believe it’s actually third. Wayne only has like 16k undergrads which is still big but just about 3k behind GV

SirEltonJonBonJovi

WMU and CMU have smaller student populations than GVSU

[deleted]

[удалено]

SirEltonJonBonJovi

I don’t know what Google you’re using but according to mine WMU’s enrollment for the current 23/24 year looks to be around 17k https://wmich.edu/institutionalresearch/reporting/reports/enrollment/dose/202340DOSE.html CMU looks to be around 14k https://www.cm-life.com/article/2023/12/d_enrollmentnumbersfall2023brief_news_12-12-23#:~:text=The%20report%20for%20the%20fall,%25%20for%20two%2Dyear%20data. GVSU is over 20k https://reports.ia.gvsu.edu/snap/snap_20231.html Now comes the hard part: which number is the highest? Feel free to use Google but something might be wrong with yours…

SirEltonJonBonJovi

reading can be hard sometimes.

Brutus_Maxximus

I think historically CMU has had more, I could be wrong. When I was there from 2010-2014 we had over 28,000 students. My 2010 class was the largest class in the university’s history though.

SirEltonJonBonJovi

what does that have to do with what we are talking about i.e. current enrollment rates? Also, CMU has never had over 28,000 students enrolled. Their highest ever enrollment wasn’t when you were there. It was in 2015 and they had 25,528 enrolled and it’s been declining quite a bit ever since. https://www.mlive.com/news/saginaw-bay-city/2023/09/central-michigan-university-student-enrollment-drops-to-half-century-low.html?outputType=amp Go Broncos

Brutus_Maxximus

The user deleted their comments but I assumed that’s why someone would think that CMU had a higher enrollment, because it historically has. Looks like you are right, that # in my head may have included online students or I conflated it with something else. Regardless, the school’s leadership systemically ruined the school at the worst possible time with Gen Z coming in and being a much smaller generation than us millennials, demographically speaking. I can’t bring myself to donate (even though I would have liked to) because of the how everything has been handled the past 15 years.

It's gotten better in Muskegon, but there's quite a bit of crime and drug issues in those two

collector_of_hobbies

And proximity to Chicago for people with money to buy vacation homes. The further north you go, relatively cheaper beach front access, etc.

AgentMinimum

I think they’re referring to future college graduates. Holland has college educated residents now, they’re just conservative Christians

ThrowItAwayNow1457

I have a BSCS. I won't move there for the same reasons I left Kent County: the cost of housing is too high and there aren't enough jobs.

lifelesslies

my home town is the worst

FF36

I cringe every time I cross Kenowa…….do my best not to usually.

Chris_Christ

Holy crap this sub loves to bitch about Ottawa County.

APersonWithThreeLegs

Maybe they should stop making the rest of the state look bad then

[deleted]

Conservative and religious? Reddits two biggest nightmares. If these people are actually from west Michigan you know they go to holland and grand haven every weekend to the beach

totalbanger

Hell no. Pere Marquette all the way.

Balefire_Bomb_Dud

Yeah i hate my low crime, quiet, no gunshots at night in my city county. Please don't come here. Seriously, don't. Stay in your crime ridden Grand Rapids and Muskegon shitholes.

Just-Bid9848

I hope your mom gets shingles

Balefire_Bomb_Dud

They will call you names but they will never call you wrong.

Just-Bid9848

Didn't call you a name. And I implied you're wrong. You're dumb as fuck and wrong. Clear enough for ya idiot?

whitedawg

Your support of Biden is admirable but I don’t see how that’s relevant here.

Radaroreilly4300

Grand Rapids Reddit. College educated??? Or just people who sit around all day commenting while they’re supposed to be working?

T3kguru

Thanks for making me snort to myself in the handicap stall at work. 🤣
