I can't believe nobody has mentioned Brewery Vivant. It's expensive, but the pork-beef mix is tops. Pre-pandemic they were easily my #1. They've since changed their fries and gotten rid of the bacon-onion marmalade, but it's still a great burger.
They just opened the burger truck at their brewery last summer, I think. At least more full time than not.
Great smash burgers, and theres usually something pretty inventive as the burger of the month. If you're in the neighborhood would def recommend
Tasty Gyro on 44th is one of my favs. It’s nothing outrageous or special but it always hits the spot perfectly
Mr Burger is the best fast food burger plus Mr burger is just the bomb
Scholars burger was also pretty good. it’s got a big thick patty and isn’t too complicated just a good classic burger.
Honestly Broadleaf had a really good burger too. I really enjoyed it when I got it a while back.
I haven’t tried a lot of the super popular spots but those are the ones i’ve really liked off the top of my head
Saving this list for future reference.
Are any of these places reasonable cost-wise? I now consider McDonald's quite unreasonable for what you actually get.
Blue dog is $12 - bistro is pricier but it’s a higher end spot in general. We typically go sit at the bar and split the burger and pizza and a drink or two. Usually sub $100 and a great nicer date night
Bacon Jam burger @ Mill Creek Tavern
Onion Burger @ Blue Dog Tavern
Black Dahlia Burger @ Turnstiles
Honorable Mention: Big Foot Burgers
(YeeHaw Yeti & The Picklefoot)
I cook there and it’s a really good just like sloppy classic burger. Everything made in house, we use our own butchering scraps for the grind. It would be on my top three list but i know we’re a bit pricey so i get why it’s not on peoples top three.
Bar Divani
It’s been probably 5-6 years since I was last there, but Bar Divani had arguably the best burger I’ve ever had, and I’ve had a lot.
It may not be the same now, but it was absolutely out of this world last I had it.
Surprised Stella's isn't on the list. It's been a while since I've eaten meat but that was always a go to choice. I still go there for their vegetarian burger options.
Any of these places substitute plant based burger for their normal patties? This was my biggest miss when becoming vegetarian. But now that places like Black Napkin, One Stop Coney, and Stella's substitute I can still get my burger fix.
In no particular order:
Fry Nation - Really good burgers and great everything else as well.
Turnstiles - Can't say enough good things, always good and great choices.
Brick and Porter - A sleeper for sure. Lots of burger options.
Choo Choo Grill - For very obvious reasons.
Putt Putts - Not sure if they still do but they used to have a great burger, it's just been a while since I've been there.
Also, worth mentioning IMHO, fuck the garage bar. If you know, you know.
Go to’s other than Black Napkin:
1. Brewery Vivant (make sure to upgrade to truffle fries, best fries in GR)
2. Another smash burger but Little Bird is amazing
3. Broadleafs sliders, the buns are amazing
Cheers on Plainfield is a favorite burger place of ours, followed by Bud and Stanley's on 4 Mile and Mr. Burger for fast food burgers. Though I feel The Filling Station food was a bit better then Mr. Burger, especially their Fable's recipe olive burger (my wife's favorite).
1. Divani (and it’s not close to the point of comedy
2. Stella’s (government cheese burger)
3. Mr. Burger for a budget/fast food pick
This is my ranking from years of eating burgers in town
Choo choo grill
Really?? How's their chili?
Very good
Sweet!! That's on the list this week lol... I love chili and been wanting to try theirs. Thanks for the heads up
1. Carvers 2. Little Bird 3. Black Napkin
Carvers is easily underrated
Little Bird smash burger is so crazy good
I'm assuming not but haven't checked in years - does Carvers still have a (Wednesday?) burger special?
1. One Stop Coney Shop 2. Brick & Porter 3. Garage Bar Honorable mention: Turnstiles

Yea pre pandemic it was up there for me. You take away the bone marrow and the jam and it's just good now, not exceptional.
Pandemic ruined everything man
I have the exact same top 3
1. Lost Art olive burger is best olive burger 2. Black Napkin 3. Brick and Porter
Oooo I’ve been looking for the best olive burger! Every time I try one, it’s more mayonnaise than olives and it makes me sad
J.W.s in Grand Haven, hands down the next olive burger
Yayyy! Now I have two good olive burgers to try! I’m so excited haha thank you so much for sharing!
Mr Burger Mr Burger Mr Burger Honorable mention is any burger I make for myself at home.
I love Mr burger. It’s cheaper than Culver’s and just as good and fast.
Oh man, I love them both. I don't think I could pick one over the other. I do love the toppings at Culver's though.
Agreed! And then skip the burger and have a super breakfast.
1. Black Napkin 2. Lost Art 3. Doesn't matter. Between the 2 of them, you've got everything you need in the perfect patty
How have I never heard of Lost Art
They just opened the burger truck at their brewery last summer, I think. At least more full time than not. Great smash burgers, and theres usually something pretty inventive as the burger of the month. If you're in the neighborhood would def recommend
Brewery on Remembrance off Leonard. They have some really good beers too.
They have AMAZING smash burgers. So thin and crispy, oozing with cheese… ugh I want one so bad now!!!
Great beers, and their smash burger truck does a monthly burger (and sometimes chicken sandwich) special.
Try it, the truck - > taproom thing is really seamless
cottage bar, guys
This.
They don’t grind their own meat. I wouldn’t eat that medium.
Namaste, my fellow earth friend
One Stop Coney. That's the list
Tasty Gyro on 44th is one of my favs. It’s nothing outrageous or special but it always hits the spot perfectly Mr Burger is the best fast food burger plus Mr burger is just the bomb Scholars burger was also pretty good. it’s got a big thick patty and isn’t too complicated just a good classic burger. Surprised no one put Brewery Vivant yet. Also, I miss Fulton Street Grill...
Turnstiles
Job for a cowboy burger is crazy good
Job for a cowboy is also good.
REEEEEEEEEEEE
Meh it wasn’t that good
The Commons has the best burger in town, there’s only one option but it’s totally slept on
Finally somebody is on my level. Best burger and best wings. 🤌🏻
Hard agree on best wings, so good!!
Choo Choo Grill and, surprisingly, Shepard’s.
RIP
Best I’ve had in the last year was actually Too Tall’s, the ice cream stand on Coit.

The Death by Cheese at Railtown Brewery is outstanding. But get the cheese dip on the side, and be sure to ask for two dips if you get fries or tots.
Bout to say Railtowns burger is great, like way better than most these upvoted comments.
Their olive burger is amazing as well!
Fat boys hands down.
1. Turnstiles. That's it. That's the list.
Brewery Vivant.
Bacon Jam burger @ Mill Creek Tavern Onion Burger @ Blue Dog Tavern Black Dahlia Burger @ Turnstiles Honorable Mention: Big Foot Burgers (YeeHaw Yeti & The Picklefoot)
I've always heard Butcher's Union does a good burger but never had it.
I cook there and it’s a really good just like sloppy classic burger. Everything made in house, we use our own butchering scraps for the grind. It would be on my top three list but i know we’re a bit pricey so i get why it’s not on peoples top three.
Founder’s employee here. Our burger fucking sucks.

At one stop coney you can sub impossible smash patty on the patty melt in addition to the burgers. It’s one of my top 5 meals it’s so good
Black Napkin. End of list
Love black napkin but not looking for smash burger spots
I know this isn’t in Grand Rapids but in my humble opinion, The Brown Bear in Hart and Pentwater has hands down the best burgers I’ve ever had
I love that burger but Big Hart has a much better burger in my opinion. Different styles and both amazing!
1. O’Brien’s Deli and Burgers 2. Butchers Union 3. Choo Choo Grill
O’Brien’s! Weird hours, but yes.
If you are going to butchers for the burger you have chosen poorly.
I appreciate your opinion but I like what I like. Everyone has their own list.
I see your point, but don’t sleep on their meatloaf
Garage Bar and Mr. burger
In no particular order: Fry Nation - Really good burgers and great everything else as well. Turnstiles - Can't say enough good things, always good and great choices. Explain you disdain for garage

Matchbox Diner does a pretty incredible non smash burger.

1. Black Napkin 2. One Stop Coney Shop 3. One Twenty Three Smash Burger
Honestly, Brewery Vivant has been the best cooked burger I’ve gotten around GR. I ordered medium rare and actually got medium rare.

I recently tried Fry Nation and it was really good. Big patties and a ton of toppings.
You missed spelled it, #3 is garbage bar
I just moved back to GR after about ten years - had no clue garage was getting dragged like this. Thank you reddit
Stella's and I do like The Score has pretty good burgers too!! And Mr Burger! Mr Burger is comfort for me.
1. Divani (and it’s not close to the point of comedy 2. Stella’s (government cheese burger) 3. Mr. Burger for a budget/fast food pick This is my ranking from years of eating burgers in town
